State Mottos 1 Minute

Iowa’s state motto is Our Liberties We Prize And Our Rights We Will Maintain. The first Iowa General Assembly adopted it in 1847, just 58 days after Iowa achieved statehood. At 53 characters, it is the longest state motto in the United States.

The motto appears on the Great Seal of Iowa, carried on a scroll by the bald eagle at the top of the seal’s design. It also appears on the Iowa state flag, designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt in 1921. Iowa is one of the few states whose motto is clearly visible on both the seal and the flag.

The motto divides into two parallel statements joined by And. The first half — Our Liberties We Prize — is a declaration of value: Iowa’s citizens hold their civil liberties dear. The second half — Our Rights We Will Maintain — is a declaration of commitment: those rights will be defended. Prize and Maintain are carefully chosen words. To prize something is to hold it in high regard; to maintain it is to actively keep it intact.

The phrase is written in the first person plural. It is not a statement about abstract ideals or distant government. It is a statement from the people of Iowa about what they themselves value and intend to protect. For a state founded on the frontier in 1846, that directness was deliberate.

The word rights carried specific weight in 1847. Iowa entered the Union as a free state, and the question of what rights citizens could claim and defend was central to American political life in the years leading to the Civil War. The motto’s language is assertive rather than decorative.

      August 2nd is Day of the Angels, and coincidently my son’s birthday 🎂! And his middle name is Angel, following the Mexican naming tradition. He’s 35 today (born in Mexico, a month before I turned 40! 😎)

        1. Son’s father is Mexican, and son was born in Mexico= Mexican birth certificate. I later went to American embassy and got the American birth certificate, and a SS# for Son.

          I’m pretty jaded, may be hitting your level of cynical, though 😁

        we had very few orioles any more when i took in the jelly feeder. it took the finches and others 2 days before they left to find suitable food elsewhere. I got the glass jelly cups for the feeder hubby will make over winter. they have lips, so all he has to do is drill holes in the wooden part. They can be removed to refill or clean.

    Just The News: “Massachusetts lawmakers are considering legislation that would establish a permanent state commission focused on issues affecting American Muslims, with responsibilities ranging from advising policymakers to recommending candidates for government appointments. The proposal, titled, “An Act promoting the civil rights and inclusion of American Muslims in the commonwealth,” is supported by state Sen. Jamie Eldridge and state Rep. Vanna Howard.

    According to the bill’s fact sheet, the measure would establish “a Massachusetts state commission aimed at studying issues affecting American Muslim communities in the Commonwealth.”

    The commission would be tasked with several responsibilities, including identifying and recommending “qualified American Muslims for appointive positions at all levels of government.” It would also “assess how programs and practices in all state agencies impact American Muslims” and “advise executive and legislative bodies on how various policies impact American Muslims.”

    According to the fact sheet, the commission would additionally “promote activities that will enable the state of Massachusetts to realize the full benefit of the skills, talents and cultural heritage of American Muslims.”

    Supporters argue the legislation is needed because “the American Muslim perspective and experiences are often absent in policy conversations on issues that directly impact the community.”

      1. no, we planned for that. that’s what the 2 outfall pipes are in pond. if the water ever exceeds their height, the water drains into them and thru the horizontal pipes that flow into the runoff ditch that was there when we came. It’s really a great job by the guy who out the pond in. the runoff eventually flows into the stream at the bottom of the driveway, but far enough past the driveway that it doesn’t flood the driveway itself.

          1. the guy was an excellent listener too. He never did a pond as big as ours–only small koi ponds, but he was eager to give it go. we told him about the runoff from the mountain and the heavy rains we get sometimes and how that area would always be wet. so he planned and thought and came out a bunch of times and brought a plumber with him to discuss it all. we were happy with him.

            but in the years after, he never responds to our calls or emails even though his ad remains in the dollar saver every week. We gave him a great review on his website too.

            the waterfall he put in needs to be repaired and the water redirected to it…sigh. oh well. the waterfall was my favorite part (except for the flowers).

    During an appearance on the Sean Hannity show, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, who had an amazing exchange with Fauci during the hearing, suggested that Fauci actually had no right to invoke the Fifth Amendment because he received immunity from the Biden administration.   28. “A section of Roman road has been found at the site of planned autobahn construction near Drackenstein in southern Germany.

    It dates to the 1st century, likely built during the reign of Emperor Vespasian (r. 69-79 A.D.).

    Those Romans, building stuff everywhere.  Did they call it the Autobahnius? Was there no speed limit? In video captured by Cameron Malstrom, the men are seen swinging and kicking each other for only a few seconds before a Pit Bull belonging to one of the men attacks the other’s German Shepherd.
