Today, in 1984, the first episode of Jeopardy aired and I found an article detailing some interesting Jeopardy facts.

It’s Older Than You Think

The first episode of the original “Jeopardy!” aired in 1964 and ran until 1975. Then, “The All-New ‘Jeopardy!’” ran from 1978 to 1979. Today’s version of the show didn’t appear until 1984, and it has been running continuously ever since. 

You Can Review Almost Every Clue 

There’s a fan-run archive of transcripts from almost every “Jeopardy!” episode. In some ways, the site has changed the way the game is played. Now, would-be contestants can review over 412,000 clues before attempting to get on the show. Having a study guide can really give you an edge if you make it to the stage. 

Talking Over Trebek 

In the first episode of “Jeopardy!,” contestants didn’t have to wait for host Alex Trebek to stop speaking before they hit the buzzer. This practice was confusing to viewers, rude to the host, and it gave an advantage to fast readers. The show’s producers quickly changed the rules. Now, the host must read the question in full before the contestant’s buzzers activate. 

What’s The Question? 

Originally, the show creators wanted to call “Jeopardy!” “What’s The Question?” The almost-title was a nod to the show’s unique formatting. However, when a network executive said there weren’t enough “jeopardies” in the show, they changed the name. Honestly, “Jeopardy!” is a much catchier title. 

Show Hosts Work 46 Days a Year

According to the “Jeopardy!” website, Alex Trebek had a pretty sweet work schedule. They filmed five episodes a day but only for 46 days a year.  Presumably, there were media appearances and other work-related duties on other days, but it certainly seems like “Jeopardy!” hosts have a relatively relaxed life. No wonder Trebek continued with the job for more than 35 years. 

Pancreatic Cancer

“Jeopardy!” has had five official hosts: Art Fleming, Alex Trebek, Mike Richards, Mayim Bialik, and the current host, Ken Jennings. Trebek hosted the majority of the shows and appeared in over 8,000 episodes. In a bizarre twist of fate, both Alex Trebek and the original “Jeopardy!” host, Art Fleming, lost their lives to pancreatic cancer. Fleming passed away in 1995, and Trebek passed away in 2020. 

Record Number of Emmys 

“Jeopardy!” has received more Emmy awards than any other game show. Over the years, the show has accumulated more than 43 Emmys!  It also won a Peabody Award in 2011. Peabody Awards are considered the most prestigious award in broadcasting. 

“Jeopardy!’s” Theme Was a Lullaby

The show creator, Merv Griffin, made up “Jeopardy!’s” theme song, titled “Think,” in under a minute. It was originally a lullaby to help his son fall asleep. Griffin later told the New York Times he made somewhere between $70 and $80 million for the tune.  That’s one profitable lullaby! 

There’s Not Always a Winner

According to the “Jeopardy!” fan site, there are eight episodes with no winner. In other words, all of the players either finished with zero dollars or were ineligible to play Final Jeopardy!  Per “Jeopardy!’s” rules, to play in the final round, players must have a positive account balance. And, to win, they must have more than $0. 

Contestants Don’t Know What Personal Anecdote They’ll Share 

Before appearing on the show, contestants provide producers with a few personal anecdotes they’re okay with sharing on air. However, they don’t know which anecdote will come up during filming. The host reviews the anecdotes of each contestant and decides which one they like best. So, the contestant is always surprised. 

April Fools 

In 1997, Alex Trebek and “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak played a little April Fools’ joke. They switched jobs for the day so that Sajak hosted “Jeopardy!” while Trebek hosted “Wheel of Fortune.” The two shows are related in other ways. They have the same creator, were filmed on the same lot, and are often referred to as “sister shows.” 

The Man Behind the Voice

If you’ve ever watched “Jeopardy!,” you’re familiar with the phrase, “This is ‘Jeopardy!’” The famous opening line is voiced by Johnny Gilbert. According to the official “Jeopardy!” website, Gilbert has been in the announcer’s booth since the show’s start in 1984. He even won a Guinness World Record for his work on the show. 

Certain Wages Aren’t Allowed

“Jeopardy!” rules require contestants to earn wages before playing a Daily Double and Final Jeopardy! However, according to tweets from former winners, certain wages aren’t allowed. Contestants are forbidden from betting $69 because it’s a sexual innuendo. They also can’t bet $14, $666, $88, or $1,488 because of their ties to white supremacist groups. 

No Final Jeopardy!

There’s yet to be an episode without a Final Jeopardy! round, but technically, there could be. According to the official “Jeopardy!” website, the rulebook states, “In the event all three contestants have $0 (zero) or minus amounts at the end of ‘Double Jeopardy!’, no Final Jeopardy! round would be played.” If that scenario played out, no one’s really sure what would happen. Producers give three minutes to the Final Jeopardy! round that would need to be filled, but no one’s sure how they would fill it. 

It’s Easier To Get Into an Ivy League School

According to Ken Jenning’s website, it’s easier to get into an Ivy League School than it is to get on “Jeopardy!” He notes the show only accepts 400 contestants each year, but tens of thousands apply.  To get on the show, would-be contestants take a 50-question test. Those who pass move on to a mock game and interview round. Then, they often wait years to find out whether they made it or not. 

Ken Jennings Holds the Record 

Ken Jennings has more “Jeopardy!” wins than any other contestant. He won 74 consecutive games and earned $2,520,700.  Jennings made his epic winning streak in 2004 while working as a software engineer in Utah. Today, he’s the host of “Jeopardy!”

Writers Come Up with a Lot of Clues 

“Jeopardy!” writers have a tough job. They create clues for 230 games each year, which is 14,030 clues per season.  Every day, they each have to write clues for two to three categories. Researchers then review and approve the clues for the show. 

The Hometown Howdy

If someone from your neighborhood has been on “Jeopardy!” you might have watched a “Hometown Howdy.” The “Hometown Howdy” is a short clip in which a contestant says hi to their hometown. They only air on local affiliate networks. So, unless you live in the same area as one of the contestants, you won’t see it. 

The Clue Crew’s Traveled Over 1 Million Miles

The Jeopardy! Clue Crew travels around the world to film unique clues for the show. Over the years, they’ve racked up over a million miles and seen some incredible places. In a piece for the “Jeopardy!” website, founding Clue Crew member Sarah Whitcomb Foss fondly remembered filming in the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. She said they were able to film in one of the passages Anne Frank hid in. 

Game Boards Are Random 

In a piece for Better Magazine, a former “Jeopardy!” contestant discussed how show producers picked a game board to ensure there was no cheating. According to her, there are six game boards for each day’s filming. A compliance officer for the show chooses five of the six to run with. Their picks are entirely random to ensure no one knows what the questions are in advance. 

There are Multiple Techniques 

Winning a game of “Jeopardy!” takes more than trivia knowledge and fast recall. There are multiple proven strategies for winning the show. Some rely on Daily Double hunting, in which they seemingly pick random clues across the board, searching for a high-value Daily Double. Others, like Ken Jennings, work their way through one category at a time.  

The Lowest Score

The lowest score ever earned on “Jeopardy!” was by contestant Patrick Pearce. He played in 2021 and earned -$7,400. Before that, contestant Stephanie Hull held the low score record for several years. She earned -$6,500 in 2015.  

Every Player Walks Away with Some Money 

If you make it on “Jeopardy!” you won’t go home empty-handed. All of the contestants receive some sort of prize package. 

With the exception of tournament games (in which players usually take home more), the third-place finisher always gets $1,000. The second-place finisher always gets $2,000, and the first-place winner takes home their winnings. Sometimes, that means the first-place winner takes home less than the players they beat!

    waiting for it to get light enough to see the pond. It POURED last evening–kicked off the internet and sounded like stones hitting the metal roof!

    it’s getting lighter, but there’s still ominous dark clouds in the sky.

        I was never a fan–I liked Wheel of Fortune better. But we have an antenna now and only get stations broadcast in HD. so hubby gets some Sunday football games but not all…lol. the the rest of the time we watch dvds of series we liked or movies–no commercials!

    2. Morning, Pat! Bummer! Stay safe!!! We’re jumping right into fall, apparently! Only 54 this morning with bright sun and the dew is heavy on the grass. Guess it will be this afternoon before I can mow the back. But I could do some spraying and/or weed eating…..we’ll see. I loved watching Jeopardy but only with Alex Trebek. I can’t stand Jennings – he was cocky and arrogant when he was on the show initially.

      1. not really. there’s a history of the gov’t creating the fund and saying the wealth belongs to the citizens–not the government–and it’s because of the land and the assets in the land–natural resources and such and the money that generates. The country owns a lot of oil/gas producing land–mines too–and all that belongs to the citizens.

        why shouldn’t it be distributed to the citizens from time to time?

  13. Just The News: “D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Wednesday announced a large-scale bust linked to an illegal marketplace for scam services that resulted in the seizure of $52 million in laundered funds.

    The operation targeted Xinbi Guarantee and included a strike force deployed to Madagascar to storm 13 Chinese-run compounds, according to the Justice Departmen. Xinbi is a Chinese-language marketplace for illegal services run through social media platform Telegram.

    “If Chinese organized crime can buy a custom website and a money laundering service the way you order takeout, then every American with a retirement account is in the blast radius,” Pirro said. “My Strike Force will continue to dismantle Chinese organized crime, those who facilitate it, and protect Main Street America.” 

    The operation was part of an effort by the DOJ’s Scam Center Strike Force that aims to identify and shut down scam centers across the globe.”

    Just The News: “Three Anthropic researchers are claiming that out-of-control AI could destroy humans this decade, and the trio aired their concerns on X.  Jacob Coxen was an AI researcher with Anthropic before he resigned from the company on Tuesday, citing unacceptable risks that weren’t being considered in the race to develop AI. 

    In a series of posts on X, Coxon claimed that there will soon be “superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.” 

    “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt,” he warned. He said while the fears are not aired publicly, the same people promoting AI express these concerns privately. He said the development of AI continues because at OpenAI, one of Anthropic’s competitors, “many have not internalized the civilization stakes.” 

    Anthropic alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger backed up Coxen’s claims and added, “I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.”

    Samuel Marks, Anthropic scalable-oversight lead, chimed in with: “AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction (or similarly bad outcomes). This could happen in the next few years. In general, the more senior the employee, the more concerned they are.” 

    Marks said AI development continues despite the risks as a result of a “mixture of commercial incentives and a belief that they are in a race with each other.” 

    None of the researchers provided specifics on how this extinction event would occur.”

        1. i keep thinking about wikipedia. there was an episode of Big Band Theory when they ask the one guy what he’s been doing with his extra time…and his response was messing up wikipedia pages. then i realized some people are relying on that stuff for papers and knowledge and anyone on the internet (at that time) could change that info.

          will never trust the internet fully after that. garbage in, garbage out.

          but if you think about it, were encyclopedias any better? who guaranteed the info in them?

    Just The News: “The Arlington, Va., County Board has approved the creation of a $50,000 fund to provide the families of deported illegal aliens with taxpayer dollars to cover costs.

    The 4-0 vote permitted Arlington Thrive, a local non-profit, to distribute up to $2,000 to eligible families, ARLNow reported. The move followed a sweeping series of immigration enforcement raids in the area.

    Exact eligibility criteria remain unclear, but Arlington Thrive has the flexibility to issue the funds through checks or debit card, depending on the needs of the individual families.

    Arlington sits directly opposite Washington, D.C., on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. The County is one of several commuter communities that feed into the nation’s capital.”

    Just The News: “The wife of one of the victims killed when an Amazon-branded plane failed to stop on the runway and crashed filed a wrongful death lawsuit. 

    Yaraisi Santiso Morejon, the wife of Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, filed the lawsuit Wednesday, NBC News reported. 

    The lawsuit names Amazon, Amazon Air Cargo, 21 Air, and the two pilots, who survived the crash, as defendants. The suit alleges that they attempted a “high-speed, tailwind-affected landing” and cites pilot error and inadequate training.

    The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, was on its third trip on Sunday when it landed and overran the runway, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy. She said that the aircraft, after leaving the runway, struck navigational aids and equipment before hitting a Ford van on airport property. The van was owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a contract cleaning service for airline companies.

    Morejon’s attorneys said that Rodriguez Naranjo, 53, who was driving the van, died on impact. His four co-workers, who were also killed in the accident, were leaving their last job and heading home when the crash occurred, according to attorney Mike Morgan. 

    An Amazon spokesperson previously said that the flight was operated by 21 Air.”

  17. Just The News: “President Donald Trump gave holiday gifts valued as much as $45,000 to four White House aides, according to new financial disclosures. 

    Trump gave gifts valued at $45,000 each to executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications advisor Margo Martin, and deputy director of Oval Office operations Chamberlain Harris, NBC News reported. The president also gave a $20,000 gift to director of Oval Office operations Walt Nauta. 

    The gifts were listed in the staffers’ annual financial disclosure forms that were published by the Trump administration this week. Harp, Martin and Harris have a salary of $150,000 annually, and Nauta is paid $175,000 a year, according to the White House’s salary disclosure report to Congress.

    An unnamed White House official told NBC that the gifts are part of Trump’s longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to “people in his orbit,” which includes employees and aides. 

    The gifts, the official said, were not related to the aides’ duties and therefore entirely permissible under legal and ethical standards.”

    The Gateway Pundit also previously reported that Bartiromo’s departure followed Fox’s alleged rejection of her proposed election-integrity segment.

    Bartiromo was dumped for sharing internal Fox guidance with the White House after President Trump’s July 16 primetime address on Chinese Communist Party capabilities to interfere in U.S. elections, including alleged access to more than 200 million voter files.

    Navarro now confirms the core of that sequence. He says Bartiromo booked him for the next morning, Fox killed the coverage, and she forwarded him the producer text that made the kill official.

    The message, which Navarro published in a Washington Times column and on his Substack, came from Fox Business programming chief Ralph Giordano: “Hi – We don’t want to promote it or push to the speech at all. We don’t want to do 2020 election segments at all Thurs or Friday.”

    Navarro’s position is simple: a sitting president delivered a rare Oval Office address about a hostile communist power targeting the American vote, and Fox’s “mothership” did not want the follow-up.

    “Greg, this is like unbelievable,” Navarro said. “You got a primetime address by the president of the United States. Those are very rare. And it’s about the Chinese Communist Party basically hacking into more than 200 million voter files and doing other things to interfere in our election. … And Suzanne Scott over at the mothership at Fox didn’t want to have anything to do with that.”

    Then he went after the brand.

    “The bigger story here, Greg, is forget about anybody thinking that Fox is a conservative network that’s friendly to MAGA, that’s friendly to Trump. Suzanne Scott is the enforcer. They’ll feed you some red meat over there. You know, the easy stuff, you know, the trans stuff, stuff like that. But when it comes down to MAGA things, Suzanne Scott gets rid of everybody over there who wants to talk about MAGA issues.”

    He named the bodies.

    Lou Dobbs — highest-rated show on Fox Business — gone.
    Tucker Carlson — highest-rated show on Fox News — gone.
    Maria Bartiromo — now gone.

    “You fire people like Tucker Carlson, Lou Dobbs, now Maria Bartiromo. That throws fear into all these other anchors and keep them in line. It’s like, don’t talk about kind of Trump stuff.”

    Kelly asked the question every MAGA viewer has been asking since Thursday: who did Navarro show the text to?

  24. Ah, my big lope dropped overnight!!! It smells sooooo good! I put it in the fridge to cool off and firm up a bit. I still have 4 to go altho one is so small it really can’t be counted as a full lope. Next year, I’m planting earlier and I’m putting one seed per fence panel, so they won’t be so crowded. It’s all an experiment! LOL

    Finally a breeze has come up to dry up the grass in back. I can still see the dew in the sun but hopefully by evening, it will be dry enough.

  30. Just The News: “Thousands are expected to attend memorials across the country on Thursday, honoring Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was murdered one year ago. 

    “Our founder, our leader, and our friend, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated while doing what he had devoted his life to: standing before young Americans and challenging them to think, to speak, and to have the courage to stand for what they believe. There are no words that can adequately describe what this past year has been like,” TPUSA said in a statement ahead of the events. 

    The organization unveiled an 8-foot-tall statue in honor of Kirk at their headquarters in Phoenix, FOX10 reported. Another statue will be unveiled in New York City this week. The artist, Sergio Furnari, spent $100,000 of his own money on the 6-foot, 5-inch-tall tribute, Fox News reported.  

    The Utah Valley University in Orem, where Kirk was assassinated, closed the campus on Thursday, and no classes are being held while a memorial to Kirk is held. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox declared Sept. 10 “Charlie Kirk Day” in the state. 

    “One year ago today, Charlie Kirk came to Utah to take part in a fundamental American tradition: speak openly, debate ideas, and persuade others. Today, we honor Charlie’s memory by choosing a politics worthy of our country, one where we stand firmly for what we believe and reject violence,” Cox posted on X, which included an image of the governor’s declaration. 

    Supporters of Kirk will also attend memorial events in Georgia, Florida and Nevada, and Turning Point is also organizing an event in Sydney, Australia, the New York Post reported. 

    The local GOP in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Kirk’s hometown, will simulcast TP-USA’s Orem memorial, while holding its own vigil on Saturday.

    “It’s a real loss to us because he had kind of gotten his start through our organization. He went to high school here, and he had been part of our organization. I don’t think he was 18 yet. He was looking to volunteer and help,” Wheeling Township Republican Committee member John S. Saletta told the Post. 

    The New York Young Republican Club is also planning a memorial event for Kirk in Manhattan. Stefano Forte, president of the club, told the Post that the group’s membership base grew “exponentially” following Kirk’s assassination. 

    Tyler Robinson, 23, is accused of carrying out the assassination. He has pleaded not guilty. Following a week-long preliminary hearing, a Utah judge ruled earlier this month that the trial against Robinson can move forward.”

    Just The News: “The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday declined for the second time to intervene in a dispute over redistricting maps in Missouri. 

    The high court ruling follows a federal judge in Missouri on Tuesday temporarily blocked the state from using its 2022 congressional districts in the midterms. That ruling came just moments after the Supreme Court let stand a decision from the Missouri Supreme Court ordering Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to use the 2022 map. 

    An anti-gerrymandering group, People Not Politicians, on Wednesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s order from Tuesday night, mandating Missouri use a GOP redistricting map. 

    The Supreme Court’s decision Thursday appears to be the end of the push to use the 2025 redistricting map,  according to the Associated Press.”

    Perhaps the best way to commemorate the impact of the 9/11 attacks is to remember that the death toll from the most destructive attacks on the U.S. homeland did not end that day, but rather continues to mount.

    On the day of the attacks, 2,753 people were killed in New York, including the passengers and crews of the two hijacked planes, as well as those in the towers and on the ground, and the first responders who lost their lives trying to save others. But many more lives would be lost, by the thousands, in the years that followed.

    Recent reports show that since 9/11, nearly 10,000 more, including firefighters, police, other first responders, and survivors of the attack, have died of illnesses tied to 9/11 – 5,892 from various cancers. The smell that hung in the lower Manhattan air for months after the towers collapsed was evidence of the toxins that would continue to take lives long after that sorrowful day, even after this twenty-fifth anniversary.

    And there are more of our dead to be mourned.

    Many thousands died in the several campaigns of the Global War on Terror waged in response to 9/11. In Iraq, 4,418 servicemen were killed serving their nation, and 2,459 more in Afghanistan. American diplomats, contractors, and NGO workers also gave their lives when our country called on them. Behind every one of those numbers was a family, a friend, a community, and a life given in service. It’s nearly impossible to count the number of sacrifices made over the last two and a half decades in the service of our nation, and all those still carrying the sadness of 9/11.

    More than 100 million Americans have been born since that day. For them, 9/11 is history rather than lived memory. Will they know the truth and the tragedy when Americans weep for those killed at the World Trade Center, or the 184 people killed at the Pentagon and the 40 who died aboard Flight 93, while fighting back? This is the history they must know.

    Those of us who were alive at the time will never forget the images as they unfolded on our television screens, or the fear that seemed to engulf the country like a dark cloud until Americans rallied as one under our flag.

    In the intervening years, hostile foreign powers and terrorist sympathizers have sought to demoralize us by sowing distrust and corrupting our children and grandchildren with lies and vicious attempts to rationalize the slaughter. But these are the talking points of Osama Bin Laden, the architect of 9/11, justifying killing Americans.

    It’s our duty now and forever to defend our legacy and keep telling the future generation the truth – that terrorists sought to bring us to our knees. They failed in their ultimate objective. They meant to demoralize us, but we rose – famously and furiously – to defend our nation and to seek justice for those we lost. We’re rising still, as Americans, united by the memory of the souls we lost and determined to defend the freedoms we cherish. Never surrender. Never forget.

    Under the current rule, workers in these classifications can receive up to 60 days after their employment ends to find another employer, change status, adjust status, or pursue certain other immigration options.

    DHS is proposing to ELIMINATE that grace period entirely.

    Not reduce it to 30 days.

    Not 15 days.

    ZERO.

    DHS says the worker would generally be required to “depart from the United States immediately” when the employment or activity underlying their status ends, unless otherwise authorized to lawfully remain.

    And here’s where this gets really interesting.

    DHS estimates 3,795 workers per year currently have a new employer petition submitted during that 60-day window.

    3,765 are H-1Bs.

    99.2%.

    DHS then says approximately 2,886 employers could lose the opportunity to file petitions for workers in this situation.

    And what does DHS say those employers could do instead?

    “offer the same jobs to equally qualified U.S. workers”

    DHS is explicitly putting American workers into the equation.

    This is only a proposed rule, not final.

    But if finalized, this would fundamentally change what happens when workers across multiple employment visa categories lose their jobs in America.
