Most people aren’t big fans of a national income tax, but it was on this day back in 1861 that the first one was levied by the new President, Abraham Lincoln. It only lasted 10 years, and many people thought it would never return.

But after years of arguing and a few court battles, the federal income tax we all know returned for good in 1913, with the ratification of the 16th Amendment.

Lincoln’s national income tax was a direct reaction to the military needs of the Civil War, and he could only tax the northern states. He was also able to impose the tax without passing a constitutional amendment.

After asking his cabinet if the income tax was constitutional, Lincoln met with Congress in a special joint session on July 4, 1861, to hammer out the details of the tax law.

Lincoln’s cabinet and fellow Republicans had determined that since it did not tax property directly, the income tax was an indirect tax, and it was not subject to Article I of the Constitution, which said that direct taxes must be apportioned according to the population of each state.

Lincoln signed The Revenue Act of 1861 on August 5, 1861, and it taxed imports, provided for a direct land tax, and imposed a tax of 3 percent on individual incomes over $800 (which, in current dollars, is about $18,000). The bill fell far short of its goals. There wasn’t an effective way to collect the taxes, and the 3 percent income tax only applied, ironically, to 3 percent of the population in the north.

The laws were overhauled in the more-extensive Revenue Act of 1862, which created the agency that later became known as the Internal Revenue Service and levied the first progressive income tax on Americans. The new act also had hefty taxes on alcohol and tobacco products. More income taxes brackets and higher tax rates were added in 1864, with the tax law expiring during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.

The Revenue Act of 1864 did survive a Supreme Court challenge when in Springer v. United States a unanimous Courtsaid that the Civil War income tax was constitutional. But when Congress passed a national income tax in 1894, it was ruled unconstitutional the following year by the Supreme Court in Pollock v. Farmers’ Loan & Trust Company.

A divided court in Pollock said it was a direct tax not apportioned according to the population of each state, in violation of Article I, Section 9, of the Constitution. After the Pollock decision, it took Congress and at least 36 states to make the income tax legal via the 16th Amendment. By 1913, when the amendment was ratified, the average income had risen to $800, which was the taxable rate back in 1861.

And for the record, the Confederacy also had a version of an income tax, which wasn’t as effective as the Union tax system. Its lawmakers approved an income tax measure in 1863 as a graduated income tax. It exempted wages up to $1,000, levied a 1 percent tax on the first $1,500 over the exemption, and 2 percent on all additional income. But the Confederacy didn’t have an established system to collect taxes.

    2. Good morning, Pat! Thunder, lightning and rain here this morning @ 68. Since a storm was predicted, I took all of the feeders down last evening except the jelly feeder. The Orioles don’t care – they’re still feeding, rain or not. Forgot to flip my calendar and here I was thinking June had 31 days. SMH – oops!

    The world’s third-richest man dumped his entire stake in a NYC rent-stabilized apartment fund for six cents on the dollar. Not a typo. Six cents.

    That is what Mamdani’s socialist utopia looks like in practice. A $268 billion man taking a bath just to get as far away from New York City housing policy as humanly possible.

    And Brin is not alone. The fund he fled is sitting on $84 million in unpaid rent and facing foreclosure on a half-billion dollar loan. The University of California already wrote down its own $115 million investment by 50%.

    Meanwhile Brin took his pennies and quietly bought a $51 million waterfront estate in Miami.

    That is the market giving Mamdani a one-finger salute on the way out of town.

    An A&E Real Estate spokesperson put it plainly: “Institutional capital – both equity investors and lenders – are fleeing New York City’s rent-stabilized apartment sector. They understand New York is in a doom loop.”

    A doom loop. Built by design. Celebrated as compassion.

    Margaret Thatcher said it best: “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

    New York is not running out. It is chasing the money out. There is a difference, and it is worse.

    When the capital is gone, the maintenance stops. When the maintenance stops, the buildings rot. And the same tenants Mamdani claims to be protecting will be the ones living in the wreckage.

    This is not a rent freeze. It is a slow-motion demolition of the housing stock, dressed up in the language of justice.

    Congratulations, New York. You got the mayor you voted for.

    Peters, 𝟕𝟐, was sentenced to nine years for her role in copying Mesa County’s voting system data — an effort she and her allies said was meant to preserve evidence of irregularities.

    She uses the word 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 because that’s exactly what it is. She entered the country illegally. She is not working. She is not assimilating. She is sustained entirely by federal benefits unlocked by her U.S.-born daughter. The child is an American citizen—so the family qualifies for food assistance, Medicaid, and housing support.

    The illegal mother gets to 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐭. This is not an edge case. In 2023, nine percent of all U.S. births—320,000 babies—went to illegal alien mothers. Each anchor baby unlocks federal welfare eligibility for an otherwise ineligible household. The Supreme Court just ruled the executive branch cannot end it. Only Congress can.

    The woman in this video is not embarrassed. She is teaching others 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 and calling it a gold mine. Because for her, it is. And six Supreme Court justices just made sure it stays that way.

      The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Tuesday that children born in the U.S. to parents here illegally are still citizens at birth, with Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion joined by Justice Barrett and the Court’s three liberals to strike down President Trump’s executive order.

      Homan didn’t stop there, vowing the administration would 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 on birth tourism investigations specifically. Homan called the practice “𝘢 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘦”, arguing foreign nationals — he named China and Russia — travel to the U.S. specifically to give birth before returning home with an American citizen in tow. “𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴?” he asked.

      He’s not freelancing. DOJ’s Colin McDonald has already directed U.S. attorneys nationwide to 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 — visa fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, the works — and pushed Congress to close the loophole legislatively since the Court just made clear it won’t.

Just The News: “The House on Tuesday evening canceled votes for the remainder of the week amid tensions over the SAVE America Act, which means lawmakers can go home for the Fourth of July holiday and a week-long recess next week. The House was initially expected to have votes on Wednesday and Thursday, but House Republican leaders canceled those votes and have now sent lawmakers home after final votes took place at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

    The move comes after GOP rebels sank a procedural vote that would have advanced the annual defense authorization bill earlier in the day, according to The Hill. They also blocked plans to advance a bill funding the State Department and national security.

    “It makes no sense for us to stop our very important progress forward from House Republicans, because some Senate Democrats are refusing to do their job,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the procedural vote on the defense bill. The move also comes after Johnson warned Republican lawmakers on Monday not to hold up the chamber’s agenda in hopes of getting the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, saying that doing so would be “self-defeating.”

    Johnson said he plans to include aspects of the SAVE America Act in the massive budget reconciliation bill later this year, which would help dodge the 60-vote threshold that Republicans need in the Senate. 

    Some Republicans have warned Johnson not to use the reconciliation process because it would not pass the Byrd Rule, which requires anything included in a reconciliation bill to be a budgetary matter. “This cannot be done. It is impossible,” Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna insisted on X. “It will not pass the Byrd bath. I have amendments that should be made in order.”

    The decision to send lawmakers home early also comes after House leadership made the same decision last week because some Republicans blocked action on two funding bills.”

    Under the U.S. Code, the president has broad authority over who may enter our country. Specifically, 8 U.S.C. § 1182(f) (INA Section 212(f)) says:

    Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

    My AI research assistant tells me that “This gives the President wide latitude to define a ‘class’ of aliens and suspend or restrict their entry if he determines it serves U.S. interests (e.g., public health, welfare, preventing ‘birth tourism,’ or resource strain).”

    Why, yes, I’d say birth tourism and resource strain are substantial concerns of the U.S. in this instance. Trump would absolutely be within his rights to pen-and-phone an end to the pregnant invasion — perhaps even the child-bearing-age invasion.

    Will leftists stamp their feet and sue to stop it? Of course they will. But Trump has issued other travel bans in the past — and won in court.

    During Trump’s first term, through EO 13780 and Proclamation 9645, he took action to ban entry from terrorist-sponsoring nations, including Iran, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, and Venezuela. Leftists whined and sued, labeling the actions as Trump’s “Muslim Ban” in their petty way. But in Trump v. Hawaii (2018), the Supreme Court affirmed the president’s right to control harmful foreign travel into the U.S.

    And in 2020, Trump’s administration created rules that consular officers must deny B-1/B-2 tourist visas to pregnant applicants if they believed the woman’s primary purpose in traveling to the U.S is to birth an American baby.

    “A broader executive order could expand this by declaring pregnant non-citizens (or those reasonably believed to be pregnant) as a class whose entry is detrimental, potentially covering visa issuance, admission at ports of entry, and exceptions (e.g., for diplomats, certain humanitarian cases, or lawful permanent residents),” notes my AI research assistant.

    Seriously, the president could do this as fast as White House counsel can write it up.

    Futurism reports that the false claim that Trump and Vance both died from rabies in early June represents yet another instance of AI systems amplifying misinformation without critical verification. According to the AI feature’s fabricated narrative, Trump had been deliberately bitten by Vance following advice from Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who supposedly claimed the deadly infection could confer “superpowers.”

    Theo Wold was just interviewed about the “immigration” situation. Apparently the birth tourism is a huge thing at the universities, these young women are 7-8 months when they come, have their babies here, then immediately quit their master’s program or whatever they’re in and go home.

    He explains that the argument commonly used, that America needs workers, only applies if you think the work which needs doing is producing subversive “citizens.”

    People keep talking about reevaluating visas; I’d stop all – yes, ALL – visas to female students. And if that’s unconstitutional then stop all visas to all foreign students.

    Really have to be brutal and thorough to stop or minimize the demographic replacement that supposedly isn’t happening.
