Happy National Sewing Machine Day!

I LOVE my sewing machine and have been an avid sewer since I was 10.  I watched my mom make dresses for us girls and little suits for my brother.  But Mom also made slipcovers and curtains!  It’s because of her that I love sewing and fabrics and crafts of all sorts!  This article details 23 facts about sewing machined, but I have only posted a few.  More may be found at the link at the bottom.

From: HASTYREADER.COM:

The sewing machine’s journey from a controversial industrial tool to a high-tech domestic staple is a fascinating tale of innovation and rivalry. From the riot-sparking factory of Barthélemy Thimonnier to the fierce patent wars between Isaac Singer and Elias Howe, the industry’s roots are surprisingly dramatic. Today, that evolution continues as ornate Victorian cast-iron frames are replaced by AI-driven devices featuring Wi-Fi, fabric sensors, and laser projectors. This article explores the rich history, unexpected brand origins—ranging from weapon foundries to “snake eyes”—and the cutting-edge technology that defines the world of modern stitching today.

Fact

In 1831, French tailor Barthélemy Thimonnier opened the world’s first machine-based clothing factory. However, a mob of nearly 200 angry tailors, fearing for their livelihoods, stormed the workshop and destroyed all eighty wooden sewing machines, forcing Thimonnier to flee for his life.

Fact

Although we associate sewing machines with clothing, the first patented design by Thomas Saint in 1790 was intended for leather and canvas. His blueprints were so ahead of their time that a working chain-stitch model wasn’t successfully built until eighty-four years later.

Fact

Today’s high-tech sewing machines use sophisticated sensors to detect fabric thickness in real-time, instantly communicating with an internal microprocessor to auto-adjust thread tension and pressure. This digital precision eliminates manual guesswork, allowing the machine to maintain perfect stitches across varying materials.

Fact

Elias Howe revolutionized garment construction by placing the needle’s eye at its point, a radical departure from traditional hand-stitching needles. This innovation allowed the thread to pass through fabric without needing to go all the way through, enabling the first practical lockstitch mechanism.

Fact

Victorian-era sewing machines were often adorned with deep ‘Japanning’ finishes and real 14-karat gold leaf decals. Manufacturers designed these ornate cast-iron tools to resemble high-end furniture, ensuring they were viewed as prestigious domestic collectibles rather than mere industrial equipment within middle-class homes.

Fact

In 1856, fierce rivals including Isaac Singer and Elias Howe ended years of legal conflict by forming the Sewing Machine Combination. As the first patent pool in American history, it allowed competitors to share essential technologies through a single licensing fee.

Fact

To navigate the high legal costs of the mid-nineteenth century patent wars, Isaac Singer pioneered the installment payment plan. This novel strategy allowed him to outsell his rivals by making machines affordable, despite being legally forced to pay Elias Howe royalties.

Fact

Before becoming a renowned sewing machine brand, Husqvarna was a Swedish weapons foundry established in 1689. In 1872, needing new products, the company adapted its precision engineering used for rifle production to manufacture high-quality sewing machines, ultimately pivoting away from firearms.

Fact

In 1928, brothers Masayoshi and Jitsuichi Yasui developed a chain-stitch machine for straw hats. They initially wanted to name their brand “Sister” as a nod to seamstresses, but finding the name already trademarked, they chose “Brother” to celebrate their sibling cooperation instead.

  1. Morning All…a little chilly when i put the feeders out–50* but sunny. I nearly dropped the jelly feeder–the grosbeaks are back and extremely hungry–a male flew at my head when i was tying the feeder to the railing.

    see what today brings…

    1. Good morning, Pat.

My grandma taught me to use the treadle machine when I was 4-5 yrs old. Also taught me to darn socks! lol I have a Singer and Husqvarna upstairs in the attic. Only sewing I do now is mending.

Partly cloudy (though there was a nice sunrise) Nice breeze out of the SW, dew point below 60*. Looks to be a good day.

Have a great Saturday. 😊 God Bless 🙏

      1. Good Morning Gina!

I have made everything from a man’s 3 piece suit to seat covers for my cousin’s first car. I made my wedding gown too and I make useful things as well–pot holders, oven mitts, bowl cozies, goat coats…and tons of crafty things. I love to sew.

Maye God Bless you as well!!!

    2. Morning, Pat! A definite chill in the air here – only 64 this morning, cloudy, with faint thunder. Another Robin was trying to hover next to the jelly feeder so I put the open feeder back out for them, now that I have my air pistol to keep the squirrels away from it.

My grandma had a treadle machine that she gave to my a-Mom. I took a Singer sewing class and HomeEc and made a few dresses for myself, as well as baby clothes for my son & daughter. And, of course, my birth Mom still sews some, altho not nearly as much as she used to. She made a LOT of Western shirts for men on the racetrack. She could whip up 2 or 3 a day!

Trump Admin Shuts Down Mamdani’s Attempt to Meet with Foreign Leader

President Donald Trump’s administration has thwarted a planned meeting between two prominent democratic socialists.
According to the WaPo, U.S. diplomats in the Colombian capital of Bogotá told Colombian officials that a planned meeting between Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City and leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro in New York this week would violate U.S.-imposed visa restrictions against Petro.

Colombian officials took that to mean that the U.S. might arrest Petro if he went ahead with the Mamdani meeting.
Petro’s visa restrictions stem from comments he made outside United Nations headquarters in September 2025.

  4. this immigration fraud scam occurred in Louisiana. It involved police officers and Indians. the police filed tons of false reports of crimes against people (indians) who then applied for U-visas.
    FTA

Prosecutors said the defendants fabricated police reports to document crimes that never occurred, allowing foreign nationals to apply for protected immigration status, known as a U-Visa.

According to Special Agent Austin Witmer with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), about 300 direct petitioners were given U-Visas as part of the scheme and applications for over 650 U-Visas were filed.

This is why Americans don’t trust the immigration system and why everybody is getting sick-n-tired of the usual suspects telling us how perfect our system is, how wonderful immigrants are, and how safe and secure our elections are. None of this is true, and this story is just another piece of this huge, messy puzzle.

It’s pretty scary to think that the people who are supposed to be guarding the gate are actually standing there, letting criminals pass through.

  6. Just The News: “Crews started removing signage bearing President Donald Trump’s name at the Kennedy Center early Saturday with tarps covering the area. A court-imposed deadline required references to Trump to be removed from the building by Friday.

Workers first installed scaffolding around the section displaying Trump’s name on Friday. After midnight, the Kennedy Center asked the court to extend the deadline until noon Saturday, citing weather issues.

Overnight, workers had covered portions of the scaffolding with tarps and began the removal work. Around 3:30 a.m., crews had left the site, but the tarps remained in place, making it unclear whether Trump’s name was fully removed.”

  7. Just The News: “The Pentagon released the third batch of its declassified UFO files Friday, which showed the federal government investigated UFO sightings that were reported around the world. The 72 latest unearthed files consist of 29 reports from the FBI, 18 from the CIA, 12 from the Department of Defense, 11 from NASA, one from the intelligence community and one document from an unspecified U.S. government agency.

The batch included a July 2008 sighting of a suspected UFO at Harare International Airport in Zimbabwe, where spectators debated whether the object was from a foreign government, according to NBC News. It did not include the verdict.

“Individuals debated if the sighting was an advanced reconnaissance device of a foreign government or of extraterrestrial origins,” the file on the incident reads. “At one point during observation, ‘beams’ were observed emanating from object.”

A Defense Department file from 1946 detailed an “Evaluation Study of the Phenomenon (Flying Saucers).”

“Of some 210 incidents, 20 percent have been explained,” it says. “No tangible evidence which would support a theory that any incidents are attributable to activity of a foreign nation.”

Some of the reported sightings in the files were speculated to be military or scientific experiments, including in a 1949 file about an explosion in the Cascade Mountains, which officials said could be from the Atomic Energy Commission.

All declassified UFO files can be viewed on a special portal on the War Department’s website and can be found here. “The materials archived here are unresolved cases, meaning the government is unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena,” the department said.”

  8. EXCERPT: “After surviving a lawsuit by two Virginia residents — who claimed hosting a cage match on the South Lawn of the White House would cause them to personally suffer “aesthetic, dignitary, and procedural harms” — the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Freedom 250 event will proceed as planned on Sunday. (One plaintiff claimed, in a real legal brief filed in federal district court, that the planned fight night was literally “causing her to suffer physical pain.” But I digress.)

The aesthetics of the fight have been the subject of left-wing ire, with the loudest objections coming from people like Hillary Clinton, who knows a thing or two about improprieties on White House grounds. But nothing offended leftists more than the outfits UFC revealed for the “ring girls,” the women who walk around the octagon with signs announcing each successive match. Because U.S. flag code prohibits wearing an actual American flag like a beach towel, media concluded, the star-spangled getups must be against the law.

Created by costume designer Marina Toybina, the outfits feature everything from typical cheerleader hot pants to dramatic trains. The best ones are reminiscent of the classic American tradition of high school drill teams, which is to say, they’re fabulous.

  9. “At my direction, the United States Southern Command delivered a swift and lethal kinetic strike to successfully execute Niño Guerrero, the infamous leader of Tren De Aragua, one of the most bloodthirsty Terrorist Organizations on Planet Earth.

Before I returned to office, Joe Biden opened our Southern Border to millions of Illegal Criminals, and allowed this foreign army to rape, maim, and murder American Citizens with total impunity. During my Campaign, I pledged to expel these monsters from our Country, and bring Justice to the families of those they slaughtered, including the precious 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, 22-year-old Laken Reilly, and countless other beautiful souls. With this action, the United States Military has brought retribution for them, their families, and their loved ones.

Early in my Administration, I delivered on my promise to designate Tren de Aragua as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, deport thousands of evil criminals, and wage war against the Cartels, who have long been waging war against our Citizens, while weak leaders left America helpless and defensive.

This action was coordinated closely with our friends in Venezuela, with whom we are working very well. As a result, Tren de Aragua terrorists no longer have safe haven in Venezuela or anywhere else and, under my leadership, we will find these vicious murderers and drugs lords anytime, anyplace, and send them to the depths of hell where they belong.” GOD BLESS AMERICA! 11. “The AI They Don’t Want You to Have: Biological Intelligence, Government Power, and the New Biosecurity State”

    Dr. Robert W. Malone, Jun 13, 2026

EXCERPT: “Anthropic is a U.S.-based artificial intelligence company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives and researchers, including Dario Amodei, that develops the Claude family of AI models and focuses heavily on AI safety, alignment, and national security applications.

Anthropic’s recent restrictions on public access to its most advanced AI systems for biological research reveal something far more significant than a debate about artificial intelligence.

    • They reveal the emergence of a new doctrine.
    • Powerful capabilities for the public will be restricted.
    • Powerful capabilities for governments and approved institutions will continue.
    • The justification is biosecurity.

According to Anthropic, its most advanced models demonstrate capabilities for sophisticated biological research. The company has cited concerns that these systems may assist with advanced experimental design, biological reasoning, and other activities that could be misused.Powerful technologies create risks.

The argument being made is simple. These capabilities are supposedly far too dangerous for independent scientists, small laboratories, entrepreneurs, citizen researchers, and the general public. Yet they are somehow safe in the hands of governments and the institutions governments choose to trust. What evidence supports that conclusion?

Before we hand control of these technologies to governments and their preferred partners, perhaps we should examine the track record of the institutions demanding that trust.

The same federal apparatus now positioning itself as the guardian of biological AI spent years funding, overseeing, defending, and, in many cases, obscuring controversial gain-of-function research programs.

For years, Senator Rand Paul pursued questions regarding NIH funding streams, EcoHealth Alliance, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and the bureaucratic shell game that often allows agencies to distance themselves from responsibility while retaining control over funding and policy. It is now difficult to deny that federal funds flowed through a complex network of grants, subcontracts, foreign laboratories, and research partners engaged in increasingly risky virology research. Strong evidence has emerged that U.S.-supported research contributed to work relevant to the development of SARS-CoV-2, and some of that work occurred in laboratories here in the United States.

A revealing aspect of this history is not the research itself, but the effort required to uncover basic facts about it.

Obtaining answers required years of congressional inquiries, subpoenas, hearings, document requests, whistleblowers, litigation, and relentless public pressure. Emails were withheld. Records were slow-walked. Definitions shifted. Agencies repeatedly appeared more interested in protecting programs and reputations than in providing transparency.

That is not evidence of a system characterized by openness and accountability. It is evidence of a system resistant to oversight.

    Which brings us to Congress.

What has Congress actually done with the information it has uncovered?

There have been hearings. There have been reports. There have been sharply worded letters, subpoenas, referrals, and public confrontations. Yet the fundamental architecture remains largely intact. The same agencies continue to fund research (with the notable exception of USAID, some of whose “dual function” research activities have been moved to other agencies). The same biodefense bureaucracy continues to operate. The same grant-making mechanisms continue to function. The same oversight failures that generated concern in the first place remain virtually unchanged. Anyone who challenges the system isn’t just shut down; they are ostracized by the government. Their services no longer needed. Their opinions should not be considered.

Congress has demonstrated its ability to investigate. It has not demonstrated its ability to govern. That failure matters because the debate over biological AI assumes the existence of competent and accountable oversight. Yet the recent history of gain-of-function research suggests precisely the opposite. If Congress has struggled to exercise meaningful oversight over traditional biological research programs, why should anyone assume it will be more successful overseeing AI systems capable of dramatically accelerating biological research?

    The question looms large.…..”

  12. “Trump is Setting Up the End of the War”

    Clandestine, Jun 13, 2026

    IT’S TIME!!! 👀

Trump says the deal is “scheduled to get signed tomorrow”, meaning by Iran, then he will head to Europe to finalize the deal.

Most importantly, Iran will have no nuclear weapon, and the “nuclear dust” will be taken and destroyed by the US, and Trump leaves the door open to taking the uranium back to the US first to “downblend and destroy it”. Whether it is destroyed in Iran or the US, I can assure you that the DoE and IAEA will be testing all of it to see where it originated from.

It appears Trump’s plan is for Iran to have the deal signed tomorrow, then Trump will be on the UFC broadcast later that night, to officially announce the war is over, and then he will depart from the White House lawn on Marine One, on his way to Europe to finalize the deal.

Trump is setting up an optics masterclass. THE WORLD IS WATCHING!!!
