Alabama State Tree: Southern Long Leaf Pine

With needles 8 to 17 inches long, longleaf pine is the southern pine with the longest needles. The bright green, flexible needles grow in clusters of three at the end of the branches, giving the tree an almost weeping appearance. The spiny, grayish-brown cones are equally large (5 to 12 inches long) and attractive. Both the needles and the cones are used in crafts. The reddish-brown bark has paper-like scales.

Due to their size, longleaf pine is not commonly grown in residential landscapes but it makes an attractive specimen if you have the space. The tree grows slowly and for the first five to seven years, it looks more like a clump of grass than a tree. Various mammals and birds use this native evergreen for food and shelter.

The best time to plant container-grown seedlings is between November and February when there is no frost and the temperature is below 75 degrees F.

Longleaf Pine Care

Here are the main care requirements for growing a longleaf pine:

Plant it in a location with full sun and deep, well-drained, loamy soil.

Water the tree regularly during the first couple of years until it is fully established.

Do not fertilize the tree but keep the areas around it clear so the tree does not have to compete with other plants for water and nutrients.

Pruning off the lower limbs of mature trees is optional.

Light

Longleaf pine is a tree that needs to be planted in full sun to thrive.

Soil

Because of its long taproot, longleaf pine needs deep soil. Sandy loam with good drainage and a pH between 5.0 and 5.5 is ideal.

Water

Young trees need regular watering until they are established. Make sure to keep the area weed-free to avoid competition for water and nutrients. Mature longleaf pine trees are fairly drought-resistant but benefit from occasional watering in periods of dry weather.

Temperature and Humidity

Longleaf pine is not winter-hardy below USDA Zone 7. It does well in any climate that is similar to its native habitat with hot, humid summers and mild winters.

Fertilizer

The tree does not require fertilizer and does better without. Instead, scatter a layer of compost around the tree every spring and make sure to keep it free from weeds to avoid competition for nutrients.

Types of Longleaf Pine

No cultivars, varieties, or subspecies of longleaf pine are available. However, longleaf pine tree does sometimes produce natural hybrids with loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii).

Pruning

Some homeowners do not like the look of the lower limbs on the trunk of a longleaf pine and prefer to prune them off. If you choose to do this, make your pruning cuts flush with the trunk. You can prune in summer, fall, or winter; avoid pruning in spring, because this is when the sap is flowing. It’s best to remove, at most, a few branches each year, so that you don’t slow down the growth of the plant excessively.

  1. Good Morning All!

Despite it being warmer than yesterday morning…we’re currently at 0… the water in the kitchen froze overnight. It’s been a problem from the beginning. The plumber ran the pipes to the kitchen sink along the top of the concrete foundation not considering how cold it gets here in the winter. Normally hubby lets the water drip ever so slightly so it doesn’t freeze, but it didn’t work last night.

We have to do a walmart run today and gonna leave earlier in the afternoon than normal, so we can see better transferring the groceries.

    1. Bummer! Are the pipes accessible to wrap them? Well, duh, Filly! Obviously not or they would have done it by now! SMH – brain fart!

No sign of Wheezer overnight. The bitter cold hasn’t hit here yet. It’s 24 at the moment with bright sunshine. We’ve got a few days of truly bitter cold coming (negative #’s) but then it bounces right back up to above freezing, at least during the day. Drive carefully and be safe!

Ice Agents Lewiston Maine – This Is Getting Wild 🔥

It appears the Trump administration has orchestrated a mass blitz into Maine – surprising the Leftists/Democrats in the state. Janet Mills has frantically ordered an emergency enactment of “Sanctuary State” demanding local & state PD immediately HALT all ICE assistance.

We’ve gotten reports that local PD & state PD have jointly helped in many of these raids today in some form or manner. We are trying to confirm – there appears to be some level of open rebellion against Maine Democrats within the police & sheriff forces in our state.

    • Golder explains her business model, taking a cut of migrants’ earnings: “I take one-third of what they make.” If they get $10,000, 1/3 is mine.”!Concerning as it suggests exploitation or a form of indentured labor tied to immigration help.
    • Coaching on fabricating asylum claims: “You have to make the story… to meet the legal threshold.” Golder discusses tailoring narratives (e.g., persecution claims) to increase approval chances, which could involve fraud.
    • she says she has access to judges, she goes out where they hang out and drink Golder brags about direct access to immigration judges who are willing to bend rules without fear
    • Explicit bribery of Judges: “Okay, $50,000 I send everybody to you… 50,000 going split between people.” Golder describes approaching a judge, offering $50k (split among parties) to route cases for guaranteed approvals.

  5. Just The News: “President Donald Trump summarized Tuesday what he believes to be the three top accomplishments of his first year back in the Oval Office, which included securing major business investments for the United States.

The observation occurred on the first anniversary of his second term, which has already seen a significant drop in gas prices, aggressive deportation operations and the brokering of eight peace deals between warring nations. But none of these were what the president believed to be his most significant achievements.

Trump told reporters during a nearly 2-hour press briefing that he felt his biggest accomplishments were rebuilding the United States’ military, securing major investments and attaining most-favored-nation pricing for prescription drugs.

“I think the building of a really powerful military has been a great achievement, and that would include the Venezuela thing,” Trump said. “That would include the attack on Iran and the wiping out of the nuclear threat. I think that’s been really amazing what we’ve done militarily.”

The White House also released its own list of Trump’s and his administration’s 365 greatest achievements.

“One year ago today, President Donald J. Trump returned to office with a resounding mandate to restore prosperity, secure the border, rebuild American strength, and put the American people first,” the White House said. “In just 365 days, President Trump has delivered truly transformative results with the most accomplished first year of any presidential term in modern history.”

  6. “Biden’s FBI paid anti-Trump ‘Sedition Hunters’ as informants in J6, Arctic Frost probes, memos show — FBI Director Kash Patel tells Just the News that “paying openly anti-Trump activists to identify Americans using questionable technology is a stunning abuse of bureau authorities.”

By John Solomon and Jerry Dunleavy, January 20, 2026

EXCERPT: “The Biden-era FBI made more than $100,000 in payments to informants who were members of an anonymous group of tech sleuths known as the “Sedition Hunters” to gather and analyze video evidence in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and Arctic Frost probes despite the group’s significant anti-Trump fervor and known ties to foreigners, according to memos reviewed by Just the News.

The payments are due to be disclosed by FBI Director Kash Patel to Congress along with acknowledged concerns that the Christopher Wray-run bureau’s approval of certain members of the Sedition Hunters as confidential human sources may have violated bureau policies in the Domestic Investigation and Operations Guide (DIOG) concerning informant bias, informant secrecy, foreign influence, and contracting transparency, officials said.

Government officials said group members were first engaged in January 2021, just days after the Capitol riot, to assist making arrests in the January 6 case by identifying potential defendants using facial recognition software. The group members received at least $150,000 in payments for that work and other work related to the Arctic Frost probe into whether Trump supporters violated the law by promoting alternate electors to be considered for the certification of the 2020 election.

Biden-era FBI knew paid foreigners were using spyware to identify J6 arrestees

One of the earliest emails from the FBI’s Washington field office that oversaw that work showed the FBI was clearly aware the group had foreign connections and may actually be using software from overseas to identify American citizens for arrest, according to a copy of the email reviewed by Just the News.

The late January 2021 email from the FBI’s Washington field office stated that “we have a sedition hunter from the United Kingdom running facial recognition software” with the tipster telling the bureau that this UK-based so-called sedition hunter “just found this possible match” to an alleged January 6 suspect a few minutes prior, sharing the picture with the FBI.

FBI Director Kash Patel told Just the News on Tuesday night he is concerned that the paid informant relationship with Sedition Hunters members was inappropriate, and he was committed to working with Congress to develop rules to avoid such entanglements in the future.

“The American people deserve the truth about how the FBI was weaponized against them. Paying openly anti-Trump activists to identify Americans using questionable technology is a stunning abuse of bureau authorities and a clear violation of longstanding informant rules,” Patel said in a statement to Just the News.

“Under my leadership, the FBI will fully disclose these actions to Congress and ensure the bureau never again serves partisan or political ends instead of the Constitution,” he added…..”

  7. EXCERPT: “As the Supreme Court considers a challenge to President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship, new findings from award-winning investigative journalist Peter Schweizer about how China abuses the U.S. law could have major implications for the case.

In his new book, “The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon”, which was released to the public on Tuesday, Schweizer examines the role of both China and Mexico in encouraging illegal immigration to the United States as well as how the Chinese government has apparently abused U.S. birthright citizenship.

Citing data from the Chinese government and independent assessments, Schweizer and his research team estimated between 750,000 and 1.5 million Chinese received U.S. citizenship in the last 13 years by exploiting the birthright citizenship laws–a loophole that has been called “birth tourism.”

Chinese birth tourism has been a longstanding concern, but the new estimates of the scale, Schweizer believes, are relevant to the Supreme Court’s current deliberations on whether President Trump has the authority to narrow the definition of birthright citizenship under U.S. law.

Chinese birth tourism “on industrial scale”

“What I think people don’t get right about birthright citizenship is how and why it’s happening. The assumption is, you know, people are kind of sneaking across the border, and then they get pregnant, they happen to have a child, and it’s sort of something that just happens,” Schweizer told Just the News…..

  9. EXCERPT: “Federal prosecutors on Tuesday served subpoenas to at least five top Minnesota Democrats — including Gov. Tim Walz — as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into the obstruction of ICE and of the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown in the state, U.S. officials confirmed to Just the News.

Beyond the subpoena issued to Walz for allegedly obstructing law enforcement activities, the DOJ also subpoenaed Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and Hennepin County attorney Mary Moriarty over their alleged anti-ICE actions and obstruction activities, the U.S. officials said.

Just the News had reported on Friday that the DOJ had opened an investigation into Walz and Frey. The officials had said it was likely that Walz and Frey would get grand jury subpoenas in an investigation that is looking at obstruction, as well as scrutinizing whether Walz turned a blind eye to a massive fraud scheme in his state…..”

  13. Holy shit! Not only is VA going to get a LOT more expensive to live in, but far more dangerous! This is insane!!!!

EXCEROT: “…..But one proposal, championed by Democrat Delegate Rae Cousins, would eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for rape, manslaughter, assaulting law enforcement, the possession and distribution of child pornography, and repeat violent felonies. Democrat support for rapists, murderers, pedophiles, and those who assault law enforcement is nothing new, but it is usually reserved for states like California, Washington, and Oregon.

Cousins’ bill would remove the 5-year mandatory minimum prison sentence for those caught producing, publishing, selling, financing, and otherwise creating or helping to create child pornography of those under the age of 15, as well as the 15-year mandatory minimum for a second offense. It also eliminates language that would require that sentence to be served consecutively, as opposed to concurrently, with sentences for other offenses.

Cousins would also remove the mandatory minimum of 25 years for rape, as well as the requirement that those years be served consecutively with other offenses.

Anyone who brandishes or uses a firearm in the commission of murder, rape, forcible sodomy, inanimate or animate object sexual penetration, robbery, carjacking, burglary, malicious wounding, malicious bodily injury to a law-enforcement officer, aggravated malicious wounding, malicious wounding by mob, or abduction will not only have the mandatory minimum of three years in prison given for his crime, but actually have the offense reduced to between one and three years or a combination of jail time of a year or less and a fine.

Coupled with gun restrictions — which Cousins also apparently supports — these legislative changes seemingly indicate Democrats would prefer to make it easier for a citizen to get raped or murdered and have the rapist or murderer be handed a light sentence for his crime…..”

  14. EXCERPT: “The N.C. Court of Appeals ruled on Jan. 7 that UNC does not have to release documents related to a professor’s research concerning COVID-19 and its possible origin from his on-campus laboratory.

Ralph Baric is a William R. Kenan Jr. distinguished professor in the Department of Epidemiology at UNC and has been a world leader in coronavirus research for more than 30 years. However, after SARS-related coronavirus genomes harvested in the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China were sent to his UNC lab, rumors began to circulate that Baric had a hand in the creation of COVID-19.

Dr. Robert Redfield, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said on a podcast in November 2024 that Baric was the “scientific mastermind”  behind COVID-19 and that it was intentionally engineered as part of a biodefense program.

Baric did not respond to The Daily Tar Heel’s request for comment by the time of publication.

U.S. Right to Know, a nonprofit public health research group, initially requested documents about Baric’s research in July 2020, filing subsequent public records requests through 2021. In April 2022, the Orange County Superior Court ruled that the information requested was exempt from the Public Records Act under the N.C. General Statute 116-43.17 university research exemption.

USRTK took the case to the N.C. Court of Appeals in October 2024, which, on Jan. 7, upheld the lower court’s ruling that university research data and records do not have to be “of a proprietary nature” to be exempt from public records requests…..”

  16. Yada, yada, yada – she talks a good game but has NO follow-thru!!!!

Just The News: “Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday threatened legal sanctions against Minnesota officials for challenging the deployment of federal immigration officers to the state. In the letter, obtained exclusively by Just the News, the top Justice Department official accused state Attorney General Keith Ellison of filing “legally groundless motions” that Bondi says violate the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

“If you do not withdraw that motion, the United States reserves the right to take appropriate action, including sanctions or other disciplinary action,” Bondi wrote.

The State of Minnesota sued the Trump administration earlier this month, attempting to block the deployment of immigration officers, including ICE and Border Patrol agents, likening their operations there to an unconstitutional “federal invasion.” The lawsuit requests that the court issue a temporary restraining order declaring the deployment illegal.

Bondi argues that the lawsuit is both legally unsupported and violates Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which requires that attorneys certify that motions in court are well-grounded in both facts and law and not frivolous.

“You are…free-in the political arena-to offer the American people whatever excuses you can muster for your decision to shelter criminal illegal aliens while interfering with federal officers who are bravely and lawfully protecting citizens from the worst-of-the-worst fraudsters and violent criminals,” Bondi wrote. “What you cannot do, however, is file legally groundless motions, wasting taxpayer funds and the resources of both the Department of Justice and the federal courts.”

She continued, “The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and state bar disciplinary rules forbid that abuse of process.”

In the attorney general’s view, Minnesota’s lawsuit rests “entirely on” incorrect interpretations of “the Tenth Amendment and related notions of state sovereignty.” But, in reality, Bondi says legal history shows that “federal law is supreme” and “no State has the right to block or obstruct it.”

“It really is that simple. In the past, state officials armed with angry mobs have failed in their attempts to subvert federal law. President Trump and I will ensure that federal law is enforced in Minnesota, just as it is and will be enforced in every other state,” Bondi added.

You can read the U.S. Attorney General’s letter below: AG_Bondi-Ellison_Letter_01.21.26.pdf

Since the start of this year, Minnesota has become a flashpoint in the Trump administration’s effort to remove illegal migrants living in the U.S. Earlier this month, an ICE agent fatally shot a Minneapolis motorist, Renee Good, who, federal authorities say, tried to disrupt operations and hit an agent with her vehicle.

Additionally, the administration is also investigating alleged fraud in the state’s federally-backed benefits programs. Several individuals charged and convicted in the scheme belong to the Minneapolis Somali community, prompting the Trump administration to review the immigration statuses of those residents in particular.”

    “The Secret is Saudi Arabia”

    Clandestine, Jan 21, 2026

“The secret to understanding the war between Trump and the Deep State, is understanding Saudi Arabia. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and the Nayef faction of the Saudi Royal Family, controlled Obama and Hillary, and many other Western politicians. The Saudis were the puppet masters, and Western politicians are the puppets.

That’s why the first trip Trump made as POTUS in 2017 was to Saudi Arabia, and why shortly after Trump left Saudi Arabia, they had a change in leadership and the biggest corruption purge in history. King Salman rescinded the crown from Nayef, awarded the crown to Trump’s ally MBS, and a few months later, Nayef and Prince Alwaleed bin Talal were hanging upside down in the Ritz Carlton in Riyadh and charged with treason.

Contrary to the official public story, Trump and the US MIL were responsible for the corruption purge and arrests of high-profile Saudis in November 2017. No one else could have done it. The same thing they did to Maduro, they did to the Saudi puppet masters, only this operation was done covertly and with the cooperation of King Salman and Crown Prince MBS.

Trump and the US MIL already neutralized the Deep State puppet masters in 2017, and they have been purging the Deep State network ever since.

Now Trump and the US MIL are preparing the US for a corruption purge like the one in Saudi Arabia, only this time, to clean up the puppets. That’s why the Dems desperately don’t want the Insurrection Act invoked, because they don’t want the US MIL free to engage in law enforcement on US soil, and doing a massive corruption purge here in the US like they did in Saudi Arabia.

That’s the secret to the entire game. The US was conquered from within by foreign interests who bought our politicians, and Trump is cleaning up the mess, while the corrupt establishment try to stop him by any means necessary.

What happened in Saudi Arabia will happen here, and the enemy knows it.”

“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations.”

Trump previously stated that he would sanction countries that sent troops to Greenland at the invitation of Denmark for military exercises, though he indicated he would not take such action in light of the framework.

“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland,” he went on. “Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

As of press time, Denmark has not publicly committed to a sale of the island or any transfer of sovereignty.”

    1. “Storax Sedan was a shallow underground nuclear test conducted on July 6, 1962, at the Nevada National Security Site (formerly Nevada Test Site), as part of Operation Plowshare—a U.S. program to explore peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, such as cratering for mining or construction.

      • Yield: 104 kilotons of TNT (435 terajoules), making it a thermonuclear device with approximately 70% fusion yield.
      • Crater Dimensions: The explosion created the largest human-made crater in the United States, measuring 390 meters (1,280 feet) in diameter and 100 meters (330 feet) deep.
      • Purpose: Designed to test the feasibility of using nuclear devices to excavate large craters—potentially for canals, harbors, or mines.
      • Radioactive Fallout: Despite being underground, the test released more radioactive fallout across the U.S. than any other nuclear test, contaminating areas as far as Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Illinois.  It released significant amounts of iodine-131, a radioactive isotope harmful to the thyroid.
      • Current Status: The Sedan Crater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public.  While residual radioactivity is present, levels are low enough that visiting is considered safe without protective gear, though the site is monitored.

The test is also notable for its optimal depth placement (635 feet underground), which maximized cratering efficiency but still allowed substantial fallout due to the nature of the alluvial soil and the test’s shallow depth.  It remains one of the most infamous examples of the unintended consequences of “peaceful” nuclear testing.”

  24. Just The News: “The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday voted to advance resolutions to hold former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress after the pair defied a subpoena to testify before the panel.

The chamber voted separately on resolutions for Bill and Hillary Clinton. The Bill Clinton vote was 34-8 while the Hillary Clinton vote was 28-15. The votes send the resolutions to the entire chamber. Should the House approve the resolutions, the legislature would refer the pair to the Department of Justice to face criminal charges.

During the Biden administration, the House made similar moves against Trump loyalists Peter Navarro and Steven Bannon, both of whom refused to comply with a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 Committee. The pair each received a prison sentence.

The Oversight Panel had summoned the Clintons to testify about their connections to the late Jeffrey Epstein amid deep frustrations with the DOJ’s handling of the case. Neither appeared before the panel.”
