They flew under the cover of darkness in bare-bones plywood biplanes. They braved bullets and frostbite in the air, while battling skepticism and sexual harassment on the ground. They were feared and hated so much by the Nazis that any German airman who downed one was automatically awarded the prestigious Iron Cross medal.

All told, the pioneering all-female 588th Night Bomber Regiment dropped more than 23,000 tons of bombs on Nazi targets. And in doing so, they became a crucial Soviet asset in winning World War II.

The Germans nicknamed them the Nachthexen, or “night witches,” because the whooshing noise their wooden planes made resembled that of a sweeping broom. “This sound was the only warning the Germans had. The planes were too small to show up on radar… [or] on infrared locators,” said Steve Prowse, author of the screenplay The Night Witches, a nonfiction account of the little-known female squadron. “They never used radios, so radio locators couldn’t pick them up either. They were basically ghosts.”

Using female bombardiers wasn’t a first choice. While women had been previously barred from combat, the pressure of an encroaching enemy gave Soviet leaders a reason to rethink the policy. Adolf Hitler had launched Operation Barbarossa, his massive invasion of the Soviet Union, in June 1941. By the fall the Germans were pressing on Moscow, Leningrad was under siege and the Red Army was struggling. The Soviets were desperate.

The 588th’s first mission, on June 28, 1942, took aim—successfully—at the headquarters of the invading Nazi forces.

A Woman Leads the Charge

The squadron was the brainchild of Marina Raskova, known as the “Soviet Amelia Earhart”—famous not only as the first female navigator in the Soviet Air Force but also for her many long-distance flight records. She had been receiving letters from women all across the Soviet Union wanting to join the World War II war effort. While they had been allowed to participate in support roles, there were many who wanted to be gunners and pilots, flying on their own. Many had lost brothers or sweethearts, or had seen their homes and villages ravaged. Seeing an opportunity, Raskova petitioned Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to let her form an all-female fighting squadron.

On October 8, 1941, Stalin gave orders to deploy three all-female air force units. The women would not only fly missions and drop bombs, they would return fire—making the Soviet Union the first nation to officially allow women to engage in combat. Previously, women could help transfer planes and ammunition, after which the men took over.

Raskova quickly started to fill out her teams. From more than 2,000 applications, she selected around 400 women for each of the three units. Most were students, ranging in age from 17 to 26. Those selected moved to Engels, a small town north of Stalingrad, to begin training at the Engels School of Aviation. They underwent a highly compressed education—expected to learn in a few months what it took most soldiers several years to grasp. Each recruit had to train and perform as pilots, navigators, maintenance and ground crew.

Beyond their steep learning curve, the women faced skepticism from some of the male military personnel who believed they added no value to the combat effort. Raskova did her best to prepare her women for these attitudes, but they still faced sexual harassment, long nights and grueling conditions. “The men didn’t like the ‘little girls’ going to the front line. It was a man’s thing.” Prowse told HISTORY.

Making Do With Hand-Me-Downs and Relics

The military, unprepared for women pilots, offered them meager resources. Flyers received hand-me-down uniforms (from male soldiers), including oversized boots. “They had to tear up their bedding and stuff them in their boots to get them to fit,” said Prowse.

Their equipment wasn’t much better. The military provided them with outdated Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes, 1920s crop-dusters that had been used as training vehicles. These light two-seater, open-cockpit planes were never meant for combat. “It was like a coffin with wings,” said Prowse. Made out of plywood with canvas pulled over, the aircraft offered virtually no protection from the elements. Flying at night, pilots endured freezing temperatures, wind and frostbite. In the harsh Soviet winters, the planes became so cold, just touching them would rip off bare skin.

Due to both the planes’ limited weight capacity and the military’s limited funds, the pilots also lacked other “luxury” items their male counterparts enjoyed. Instead of parachutes (which were too heavy to carry), radar, guns and radios, they were forced to use more rudimentary tools such as rulers, stopwatches, flashlights, pencils, maps and compasses.

There was some upside to the older aircraft. Their maximum speed was slower than the stall speed of the Nazi planes, which meant these wooden planes, ironically, could maneuver faster than the enemy, making them hard to target. They also could easily take off and land from most locations. The downside? When coming under enemy fire, pilots had to duck by sending their planes into dives (almost none of the planes carried defense ammunition). If they happened to be hit by tracer bullets, which carry a pyrotechnic charge, their wooden planes would burst into flames.

Long Nights, Stealth Tactics

The Polikarpovs could only carry two bombs at a time, one under each wing. In order to make meaningful dents in the German front lines, the regiment sent out up to 40 two-person crews a night. Each would execute between eight and 18 missions a night, flying back to re-arm between runs. The weight of the bombs forced them to fly at lower altitudes, making them a much easier target—hence their night-only missions.

The planes, each with a pilot upfront and a navigator in back, traveled in packs: The first planes would go in as bait, attracting German spotlights, which provided much needed illumination. These planes, which rarely had ammunition to defend themselves, would release a flare to light up the intended target. The last plane would idle its engines and glide in darkness to the bombing area. It was this “stealth mode” that created their signature witch’s broom sound.

There were 12 commandments the Night Witches followed. The first was “be proud you are a woman.” Killing Germans was their job, but in their downtime the heroic flyers still did needlework, patchwork, decorated their planes and danced. They even put the pencils they used for navigation into double duty as eyeliner.

Disbanded and Overlooked

Their last flight took place on May 4, 1945—when the Night Witches flew within 60 kilometers (approximately 37 miles) of Berlin. Three days later, Germany officially surrendered.

According to Prowse, the Germans had two theories about why these women were so successful: They were all criminals who were masters at stealing and had been sent to the front line as punishment—or they had been given special injections that allowed them to see in the night.

Altogether these daredevil heroines flew more than 30,000 missions in total, or about 800 per pilot and navigator. They lost a total of 30 pilots, and 24 of the flyers were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Raskova, the mother of the movement, died on January 4, 1943, when she was finally sent to the front line—her plane never made it. She was given the very first state funeral of World War II and her ashes were buried in the Kremlin.

Despite being the most highly decorated unit in the Soviet Air Force during the war, the Night Witches regiment was disbanded six months after the end of World War II. And when it came to the big victory-day parade in Moscow, they weren’t included—because, it was decided, their planes were too slow.

  13. IMO, Chip is, once again, going about this the wrong way – he needs to base the banning of Sharia on the fact that Islam overall is not in any way compatible or in compliance with our Constitution, not just the Sharia aspect!

    Texas Rep. Chip Roy says the Islamic ideology that underpins these calls for violence is “incompatible” with American society. Roy introduced legislation on Wednesday entitled: “Preserving A Sharia-Free America Act,” according to a copy of the legislation obtained exclusively by The Federalist.

    EXCERPT: “It’s been five years since the nation was terrorized by Antifa militants rioting, attacking cops, throwing Molotov cocktails, setting streets ablaze, breaking shop windows, vandalizing cars, targeting journalists and hurting innocent people.     Noem paid tribute to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent who has been quietly investigating Antifa’s shadowy funding networks, alongside the FBI, Homeland Security Task Force and the intelligence community. Bessent is “getting to the bottom of these funding mechanisms and individuals who are perpetuating this violence on our American cities,” said Noem.

    Bessent’s office on Wednesday refused to comment on what he has discovered but Trump promised that all would be revealed in due course. It will be a relief to find out who has been funding these violent groups that appear for all the world to be the Dem street militia. How else to explain years of Democrats gaslighting us and Democrat governors and mayors covering for Antifa…..”

  15. Just The News: “Senate Republicans on Wednesday night successfully blocked Democrats in the upper chamber from forcing a vote on legislation that would bar President Donald Trump from using military force “against non-state organizations until formally authorized by Congress.”

    The resolution was introduced in response to the Trump administration’s recent strikes on drug boats in the Caribbean they believe are primarily coming from Venezuela. It also comes after Trump notified Congress last week that it is engaged in “non-international armed conflict” with Latin American drug cartels deemed “designated terrorist organizations.”

    Senate Republicans largely blocked the effort in a 51-48 split that was primarily along party lines. Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted against the resolution while Republican Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted with Democrats in supporting the resolution. Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz did not vote.

    Paul said he opposed the administration’s actions because he was not satisfied with the administration’s justification, and that destroying them went too far without proof of who was on board and whether they were actually transporting drugs.

    “If anyone gave a you-know-what about justice, perhaps those in charge of deciding whom to kill might let us know their names, present proof of their guilt and show evidence of their crimes,” Paul told the New York Times.

    Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Jim Risch, R-Idaho, last week supported Trump’s actions to stop drug smuggling, stating the president had the authority to take the actions without further congressional approval under “his general powers under the Constitution as the commander in chief.”

    “What could be a bigger defense of this country than keeping out this poison that’s killing thousands of Americans every year?” Risch told reporters.”

    “We’re deploying the full might of the federal law enforcement to crack down on Antifa and other domestic terrorist organizations led by Stephen Miller and Steven thank you for everything you’re doing,” Bondi said in her opening statements. “Last week, I issued a memo ordering our federal law enforcement agents, DEA FBI, US Marshals and ATF to protect ICE officers from Antifa and other radical left wing violence.”

    “[FBI] Director Patel has been going non stop. He and Deputy Attorney General Blanche were in Chicago yesterday, yesterday, while Secretary Noam was in Portland,” she added. “We are around this country fighting against this domestic terrorism… Fighting crime is more than just getting the bad guy off the streets. It’s breaking down the organization brick by brick, just like we did with cartels. We’re going to take the same approach President Trump with Antifa, destroy the entire organization from top to bottom.”

    Trump declared Antifa a terrorist organization in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk last month.”

    “At least one more lawsuit is expected to be filed by another school district that claims it did not know it hired an illegal foreign national with a criminal record as its superintendent.

    The Millcreek Township School District Board of School Directors near Erie, Pennsylvania, held a special board meeting Oct. 6 to discuss next steps in response to its former superintendent, Guyanan national Ian Andre Roberts, being arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement late last month.

    The district, which serves 6,500 students, hired Roberts as its superintendent August 2020 while he was living in the country illegally, did not have federal authorization to work in the U.S. and had racked up an extensive criminal record. He served in the role until June 2023.

    After working for MTSD, Roberts was hired by the Des Moines Public School system as its superintendent. ICE arrested him after he fled in a school vehicle inside which authorities found a loaded gun, $3,000 in cash and a hunting knife. The weapons possession would have violated the terms of his immigration status if he were in the country legally…….

    …….Prior to being hired by MTSD, Roberts was hired by D.C. Public Schools as a principal at Anacostia High School from 2010 to 2014, DCPS confirmed. Roberts remained employed there while he was arrested and convicted of reckless driving, unsafe operation and speeding in Maryland in 2012, according to ICE records.

    Prior to being hired by DCPS, Roberts was employed with Baltimore City Public Schools from August 2001 to June 2010, as a teacher, resident principal and principal. BCPS said its hiring process included “comprehensive background checks and credential verification in accordance with state and federal requirements …. designed to identify and prevent false claims of qualifications, including academic degrees, before an individual is employed.”

    It also claims it follows “strict employment eligibility requirements for all job candidates, including verification of authorization to work in the United States and disclosure of whether a visa sponsorship is needed … consistent with federal law” and part of its “standard hiring process.” Because it hired Roberts more than 15 years ago, the district wouldn’t have retained his records, it said.

    BCPS has been sued multiple times over the years for fraud, abuse, mismanagement of taxpayer money, altering student grades and attendance records, among other allegations. A 2022 Maryland Inspector General report found that between 2016 and 2020, at least more than 12,500 failing grades were changed to passing throughout BCPS.

    Prior to the investigation, in 2009, while Roberts was the principal of Friendship Academy of Science and Technology, a teacher accused him of pressuring him and others to pass failing students, including for classes they didn’t attend, Fox 45 News reported.”

    “THE HISTORY

    Serbia in 2000. Georgia in 2003. Ukraine in 2004. Kyrgyzstan in 2005. All these uprisings and movements were textbook “color revolutions.” In each, a color or a symbol unified protestors and gave the movement a brand that could be recognized around the world.

    In Serbia, the symbol was the bulldozer. On October 5, 2000, Jubisav Djokic drove his bulldozer into downtown Belgrade during mass protests against Siloban Milošević that became known as the Bulldozer Revolution. In a moment broadcast worldwide, he smashed through the front window of the state television building, helping to bring down the regime’s last stronghold.

    In Ukraine, it was the color orange. In November 2004, crowds wearing orange gathered in Kyiv to protest alleged election fraud favoring Viktor Yanukovych. The demonstrations that became known as the Orange Revolution shut down parts of the capital and led to a court-ordered re-vote, overturning the original election result.

    But hear me loud and clear: color revolutions are never spontaneous or grassroots uprisings. In the same way, protests and resistance movements in the US are never spontaneous or grassroots uprisings—just take a look at the No Kings protests.

    THE PLAYBOOK

    Abroad, color revolutions hope to install governments aligned with U.S. and NATO interests, particularly in former USSR countries or in regions key to global energy and security.

    Manuals like “The Methods of Non-Violent Action” and groups like CANVAS or Crimethinc circulate tactics for the mass mobilization of “non-violent resistance,” “color branding,” and media framing. Protests often ignite after elections are labeled as fraudulent by Western monitors, and Western media outlets amplify the narratives by framing governments as authoritarian.

    Western NGOs and think tanks like the Brookings Institution, creators of The Democracy Playbook, have long supported citizens in international color revolutions and protests. It comes as no surprise that they would also be equipping protesters inside America.

    In the United States, we see attempts at a color revolution in protests and organized actions that aim to support globalist leaders and weaken our national sovereignty. Today, the actors claim to be a part of the “nonviolent resistance” and throw around terms like “authoritarianism” and “fascism”– all clues that demonstrate a color revolution is underway.

    THE PURPLE REVOLUTION

    Inside America, members of the terrorist organization ANTIFA are notorious for dressing in all black. But the revolution we are facing in the United States is without a doubt the Purple Revolution.

    Remember when Hillary and Bill Clinton came out in purple for her concession speech in 2016? They might have said that they wore purple to symbolize unity, but Russiagate and the lawfare that followed tell us that purple was a front. Forget unity—the Clintons were representing a globalist resistance to President Trump.

    In fact, we now know that the Transition Integrity Project was set up and ready to operate if President Trump had not left office in 2021. And yet, the same purple theme was echoed at the 2021 inauguration when Kamala Harris, Jill Biden, and Michelle Obama all wore purple.

    This psyop—projecting unity when they really are working to undermine the democratic process and silence certain Americans—is a key part of their playbook.

    Leading up to President Trump’s reelection in 2024, Norm Eisen established State Democracy Defenders Action, “a bipartisan all-star team of experts in safeguarding democracy” that would push back against the Trump Administration.

    They want you to believe that purple represents unity. But purple is their attempt to replace patriotism and the tradition of our constitutional republic, even our faith.

    This summer’s No Kings protests were a failure, but it is still important to study their points. The ANTIFA, No Kings, and Purple Revolution ideologies reject not only political rulers, but also any form of hierarchical authority. The anti-God agenda is central to the Purple Revolution. It is a broader challenge to spiritual and religious order.

    PURPLE AS AN LGBTQ SYMBOL

    The Purple Revolution has another undertone. In their own words, purple or lavender represents LGBTQ resistance:

    “In fact, lavender,” writes CNN, “has had […] its own historical significance in representing resistance and power.” In 1969, “lavender sashes and armbands were distributed to a crowd of hundreds in a ‘gay power’ march from Washington Square Park to Stonewall Inn in New York.”

    We can connect the dots easily: the LGBTQ movement is essential to the Purple Revolution because it will facilitate the destruction of our children and the nuclear family. Look closely, and you’ll begin to see clues that they’re attempting a Purple Revolution all around us. Don’t believe the “grassroots” or “bipartisan” lie. The globalists are looking for any way to infiltrate the US, divide our nation, and destroy the nuclear family and the church.

    Stay alert. Don’t be deceived.“

    “Saving and protecting Jewish people is what Hitler is all about,” said one historian following the announcement of the ceasefire. “We all hoped there would someday be peace between Israel and all of its neighboring Arab countries, but I’ve got to admit, I never would have predicted that it would be Hitler who pulled it off. Well done, Hitler. You really came through for the Jews on this one.”

    Members of the media and the public at large could hardly believe that Hitler had pulled off such a surprising peace treaty to safeguard the Jewish people. “It just goes to show that sometimes it’s the guys you’d least expect,” said one reporter following Hitler’s announcement in the White House. “For the last decade, all we’ve heard about this guy is that he’s ‘literally Hitler’ and how he was going to plunge the world into war and destruction like the first Hitler did almost a century ago. But, you know what? I’ve got to hand it to Hitler on this one.”

    At publishing time, the Jewish people issued a statement of gratitude to Hitler for playing a key role in their survival.

  29. Jerry brought my mower back and it ran long enough at least that I could finish the alley. I have to get more hi-test gas before I can try to do the back yard. Crossing my fingers…..he also changed the filters and put the preservative in for the winter. Hopefully, that solves the problem…..

  30. i just tried calling Mom…today is the third time this week she’s had company! Her cousin Mike and his daughter came, then one of her old neighbors and now my 2 cousins. So happy!! Now that everyone knows where she is and she has her own room, they are coming to visit again.

A grand jury reportedly approved the charges, according to The Guardian. The indictment followed Federal Housing and Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte making a criminal referral to the Department of Justice, alleging that James falsified bank documents.

    “Based on media reports, Ms. Letitia James has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government-backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms,” he wrote.

    James pursued a civil fraud against against Trump in the lead up to the presidential election that he called part of a political witch hunt. The bench trial saw the president quarrel with Judge Arthur Engoron throughout the proceedings.”
