Surprising Coffee Ground Uses

Wondering if you can give all those used coffee grounds another purpose after making a fresh pot? If so, you’re smart to care about sustainable living. “Reusing, repurposing or finding any alternate applications for a product is always a better choice for the environment than throwing it in the trash,” says Natalie Lennick, environmental activist and founder of zero-waste hair-care brand Green Ablutions. Giving coffee grounds another life not only benefits you, it’s also a small act that’s beneficial for the planet.

You may have already heard about using coffee grounds for plants, but they’re way more versatile than that. Used coffee grounds can be used for kitchen hacks and in various other ways, so you can take advantage of this organic material more than once. You’ll likely be surprised at all the uses for coffee grounds, and they’re cost-effective too.

Adding them to your compost pile

This may not come as a total surprise, but you may not know exactly how to use coffee grounds in the garden—or even how to make compost. “Used coffee grounds are an excellent addition to compost because they are high in nitrogen, which is a key component of a healthy compost pile,” explains Chia-Ming Ro, garden consultant and owner of Coastal Homestead in Los Angeles. “They help to balance out the carbon-rich materials in compost, such as leaves and paper.”

Pro tip: Coffee grounds and their paper filters can be added directly to a compost pile with other organic matter like eggshells, leaves, grass clippings, cardboard or paper to produce a well-balanced soil amendment that feeds trees, plants and flowers, says Lennick.

Using them as insect repellent

Want to repel unwelcome bugs in the garden? Coffee grounds can give you an assist. “There is some evidence to suggest that coffee grounds can repel certain insects, such as slugs, ants and mosquitoes,” says Ro. “The exact mechanism by which coffee grounds repel insects is not well understood, but it may have to do with the strong scent of the coffee, which can mask the scent of the plant and make it less attractive to insects.”

Sprinkle coffee grounds at the base of plants or where you’re having an infestation problem in the garden. If you’re wondering how to save money on your gardening habit, now you know you may be able to skip buying the bug spray.

Pro tip: Before you start sprinkling used coffee grounds in your garden, make sure your pets don’t have access to this area. Lennick says the caffeine in coffee is toxic to cats and dogs. “Never use them in an area where your pets might accidentally ingest them,” she says.

“Coffee grounds can be beneficial for flowers because they provide a source of nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient for plant growth,” says Ro. But before you start adding spent coffee granules to your garden bed, you’ll want to look into which flowers may benefit, since it’s possible that used coffee grounds may change the soil composition.

Pro tip: Want to use coffee grounds in some flower beds? Ro suggests sprinkling them around the base of the plant and mixing them into soil.

Creating blue hydrangeas

Love hydrangeas and want to have the blue flowers? Coffee grounds may be the key to that beautiful blue hue you’re after. “The flower color of many hydrangea species is dictated by the pH of the soil,” says Lennick. Coffee is considered acidic—but coffee grounds are often considered to have a neutral pH. There is a debate among gardeners about whether coffee grounds are the answer for modifying the soil composition to get the sought-after blue color. Now, if your hydrangeas have a powdery mildew on the leaves, it may be because the plant has a fungus.

Pro tip: You may want to do a test in your garden before adding coffee grounds to all your hydrangeas. “It’s important to note that the effect of coffee grounds on the color of hydrangeas can vary, depending on the soil composition and other factors,” shares Ro.

Providing food for beneficial worms

If you have a compost bin, you may also be interested in investing in a worm bin for vermicomposting. This is where you feed your produce scraps to your “pet” worms, who eat and break down different leftover veggies and fruit. This leaves you with rich, natural fertilizer. “Worms can benefit from coffee grounds because they provide a source of nitrogen and can help to increase the nutrient content of the vermicompost,” says Ro. Plus, coffee grounds can help increase the moisture-holding capacity of the vermicompost, she adds.

Pro tip: Before you start tossing your coffee grounds into your worm bin each morning, opt for moderation. Ro says it’s important to maintain a balance in there. Too much of one ingredient can affect the composition of the compost and the health of the worms.

Deodorizing the microwave

If these appliances have taken on an odor, used coffee grounds can help. “Coffee grounds can be used to clean and deodorize stinky microwaves,” says Lennick. “It’s a safe, effective and free way to clean.”

Pro tip: Cleaning with used coffee grounds is simple and straightforward. “Apply a small amount of coffee grounds with a damp cloth and then wipe clean a few minutes later,” says Lennick.

Scrubbing pots and pans

If you have tough, hard-to-remove stains caked on your pots or pans, this is one of the handiest uses for used coffee grounds. “The abrasive nature of coffee grounds makes them useful for scrubbing stuck food from pots, pans, grills and griddles,” says Lennick.

Pro tip: Sprinkle the coffee grounds directly onto the stain and then start scrubbing. Certain types of material or surfaces should be avoided. “Do not use it on porous surfaces, as it may cause stains,” Lennick says

Cleaning the kitchen sink

If you notice that your kitchen sink needs a good scrub, and you want to avoid harsh chemicals, used coffee grounds may just be your answer. “Spent grounds can also be used to clean your kitchen sink instead of chalky products that may leave behind a white film,” explains Stacy Savage, founder & CEO of Zero Waste Strategies. “This also reduces the levels of toxicity in your home or office kitchenette areas, as your cleaning habits start to shift away from industrial-grade products.”

Pro tip: Sprinkle coffee grounds in the sink, and then scrub just as you would using another cleaner. Your sink should be shining in no time.

Flavoring baked goods

One wonderful use for coffee grounds that you may not have considered is baking. “Coffee grounds can be used as an ingredient in baked goods like cookies, muffins, scones or even granola to add a delicious coffee flavor,” says Lennick. “They are especially good in brownies, as they complement chocolate and deepen the rich cocoa flavor.”

Pro tip: Use that morning’s coffee grounds the same day you bake. “Fresher is better,” says Lennick. You may need to modify the recipe to account for more liquid. “If your grounds are very wet, you may need to slightly reduce the liquid content of the recipe to accommodate the additional moisture.”

Freshening your garbage disposal

Want to neutralize odors coming from the kitchen drain and want another option aside from your old go-to baking soda? Yup, grab those used coffee grounds. “Coffee grounds naturally trap odors,” says Lennick.

Pro tip: “Put some used coffee grounds down the drain and run the grinder for about 30 seconds to clean the inside of the mechanism,” says Savage.

Dyeing clothes

Ever spilled coffee on your favorite white shirt and then spent a ton of time trying to get the spot out? Coffee stains easily, but it also makes a wonderful natural dye for cotton, linen, silk—and even paper. The process is easy and simple too.

Pro tip: “Just take old coffee grounds, steep them in hot water and place lighter-colored fabrics and fibers into the solution for dyeing,” says Savage. “Hang-dry to allow the dye to set.”

Minimizing cellulite

If you’re looking for a natural approach to minimizing cellulite, used coffee grounds could be worth a shot. Coffee grounds contain caffeine, which has been shown to help with cellulite. “Some people believe that the caffeine in coffee grounds may help reduce the appearance of cellulite when applied topically,” says Savage.

Pro tip: Combine coffee grounds either with water or an oil, such as coconut oil, and rub onto an area affected by cellulite, for 10 minutes, two times a week.

Exfoliating your skin

The gritty and coarse texture of coffee granules makes them wonderful as a skin scrubber. Exfoliating keeps skin glowing and healthy, because it’s beneficial to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the skin. Plus, the caffeine in coffee grounds can help stimulate blood flow, which adds a natural glow to the skin.

Pro tip: “Coffee grounds can be mixed with coconut oil or honey to create an exfoliating scrub that may help remove dead skin cells and improve circulation,” says Savage.

Making a face mask or hair scrub

Shampoo can leave buildup and residue in your hair after continued use. Giving your scalp a massage while exfoliating with coffee grounds can help remove that and help stimulate hair growth—thanks to caffeine, which is known to help with hair growth as well as stimulate blood flow. According to Savage, “Coffee grounds can be used as a hair mask to potentially stimulate hair growth and add shine.”

Pro tip: Here’s the formula you need: “A tablespoon of coffee grounds mixed with an equal amount of olive oil or coconut oil creates a moisturizing face mask or stimulating scalp scrub,” says Lennick.

Minimizing under-eye circles

Coffee grounds are high in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and are also beneficial for the skin. Caffeine not only has anti-inflammatory properties; it also can stimulate blood circulation when applied below the eyes to minimize dark circles and puffiness. “Some people use coffee grounds as an eye mask to potentially reduce puffiness and dark circles,” shares Savage.

Pro tip: Mix coconut oil or water with used coffee grounds, gently rub below your eyes for around 10 minutes and then rinse. Consider making this part of your daily beauty-care routine.

  2. SOVEREIGN BRAH 🇺🇸🏛️⚡️
    @sovereignbrah
    K.

I’ve kept an eye on this Israel situation for the past few days.

Here’s what I’ve learned, & here are my blunt & honest thoughts:

    1. Israel chose to ignore intelligence from Egyptian officials about a major attack coming from Hamas.

    2. Multiple former IDF soldiers & Israeli intelligence personnel have come forward online and said there’s a zero percent chance Israel was unaware of this attack beforehand or couldn’t have prevented it.

    3. We just watched unsophisticated terrorists on hang gliders soar into one of the most heavily-defended & surveilled countries on the planet.

    4. Within 48 hours of the attack, we’re now suddenly seeing enormous support for an American war with Iran and the genocide of the Palestinian people.

I’m witnessing American pastors and formerly level-headed influencers in our world completely lose their minds and call for genocide.

It’s unsurprising, but insane to watch.

If the events of the past three years have taught me anything, it’s that when people get whipped into an emotional frenzy, critical thinking completely goes out the window.

People become highly suggestible and will rush to extremely dangerous conclusions without thinking about the consequences.

I think this is what we’re all witnessing with this situation in Israel.

I’m reminded of Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

In both scenarios, the American government received intelligence in advance of the attacks, but chose not to prevent the attacks.

    Why?

The American government was willing to sacrifice the lives of American citizens in order to advance its geopolitical goals.

Pearl Harbor gave the justification to enter WWII.

9/11 gave justification to invade the Middle East & drastically expand the American military industrial complex & our surveillance apparatus.

They were brutal & extremely traumatic events for the American public to witness. The emotional trauma caused people to get whipped into an emotional frenzy.

America wanted ONE THING in response to these attacks:

    The blood of our enemies.

I see the same psyop playing out now.

People are whipped into a frenzied bloodlust.

In their frenzied bloodlust, people are overlooking some SERIOUSLY important facts here, notably:

    1. The fact that none of this adds up,

    2. innocent civilians are being threatened with genocide, and

    3. Escalated violence in the Middle East and a war with Iran both risk ***the rest of the planet getting dragged into WWIII.***

What happened in Israel this weekend was obviously gut-wrenching and awful to witness, but I do not trust Israel’s so-called “intelligence failure”, nor do I trust the snakes in Washington calling for war with Iran, & I sure as hell no longer trust any of the emotionally-frenzied influencers calling for explicit genocide of innocent civilians.

This was a defining moment in history, similar to Pearl Harbor, 9/11, COVID, the beginning of the Ukraine war, etc, and a lot of people just got played.

    Hard.

People responded by going full mask-off, exposing themselves as reckless & incapable of exercising sound judgment in moments of chaos and heightened emotion.

And we’re now at the brink of WWIII because of it.

    This is all worth noting.

There’s a high likelihood there will be more chaos throughout the rest of this decade.

There will be more psychological operations.

There will be more moments in time in which cooler heads ought to prevail, but people will get whipped into an emotional frenzy instead.

Keep your wits about you, & be cautious in whom you allow yourself to be influenced by.

Recognize that governments & intelligence agencies spend enormous resources waging psychological operations on social media nonstop when stuff like this goes down.

Remember that when chaos is at its peak, history shows there is ALMOST ALWAYS a hidden agenda being played out, & that hidden agenda is ALWAYS designed to prey on our base emotions to facilitate a desired end-result.

    Pray for world peace tonight.

    Thanks. 🤙

But this HAS to be acknowledged going forward and the realization must sink in that they CANNOT be trusted!

  7. See, this is just stupid! Why would anyone ever consider settling near the Gaza border?? They are asking for trouble by doing so, IMO. Am I saying they “deserved” this? Of course not!!! Not to mention – I’ll say it again – the sheer stupidity of putting on a rave with thousands of half-naked people near that same border! Duh!!! Just some plain old common sense might come in handy now and then!!!

“Israeli volunteer rescue organization ZAKA said Monday night that it had discovered more than 100 bodies in Kibbutz Be’eri near the Gaza border: “Large teams cleared bodies all day from kibbutz Be’eri,” the organization said. “There were weapons everywhere, grenades, and RPGs. We cleared 108 bodies and we are not done yet.”

The New York Times has also begun to piece together eyewitness accounts of the Saturday invasion into southern Israel, as more identifies of the kidnapped have come to light:

“The hostages were seized from homes in towns along Israel’s border with Gaza — including the Kalderons’ small village of Kibbutz Nahal Oz — as well as from military bases and an enormous outdoor dance party.”

  8. NF: RFKJr. is a big threat to FJB, no doubt, but the biggest danger for us is that he will draw a LOT of
the soft middle GOP – even right here where I live, I can easily see a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth over Trump voting for RFK. Then again, that would require officially changing their voter registration to Independent vs. Republican since we have closed primaries.

From Badlands Media “Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announces independent run for president, ending Democratic primary challenge to Biden” — CNN

Our Take: “RFK, Jr. is wrong on guns, climate, foreign policy, the size of government, and probably a whole basket of other positions, and I don’t vote for Democrats because that wing of the uniparty is fully communist. Trump 2024. Nothing less.

Still, Kennedy going Independent is useful, and it changes the electoral math. Kennedy claims that he will take a greater number of votes from Trump than from Biden. I don’t see it, but I am interested in seeing how the pollsters capture public sentiment. I don’t trust polls, but I do find them to be important data points.

Leaving the party also means that, if Kennedy is allowed to poll at his actual levels of support, the media will be forced to cover his candidacy. And he may finally be awarded Secret Service protections. This move also puts Biden in the unfortunate position of having to politically persecute two opponents instead of one. I am bummed that we aren’t going to see the democrats steal a primary again, but the third party play elevates Kennedy’s position and extends him to the general.

Biden having to take on both Kennedy and Trump — while already deep in a hole from his record on the economy, starting WW3, and too many scandals to recount here — is going to be fun to watch. I really hope they have debates.

Buckle up, it’s gonna get weird.” — Ashe in America

  9. teachers union in Fresno, CA are going to go on strike if the school district doesn’t allow homeless “families” to park in the school parking lot–and oh yeah, they want free yoga.
    FTA
The Fresno Teachers Association laid out the policy in a contract proposal, which calls to ‘open high school parking lots to homeless families to park their car.’ The union acknowledges the move would require ‘paid security’ at a cost of at least $500,000, one of many expensive proposals union president Manuel Bonilla is pursuing in an attempt to address what he calls ‘societal things.’

“Families” huh? Are these the same people who called the thousands of military-aged men pouring across our border “families” too?

Oh, they also want “free” yoga too:

A California Teachers’ Union is moving toward a strike as the Fresno school district refuses to meet their demands, which include free yoga and letting the homeless live on school property. I’m staying neutral until “the Big Guy” joins the line.

        1. Then there’s the persistent suggestion that FDR knew prior to December 6, that Japan was planning an attack.
          We know that:
“U.S. cryptanalysts had partially broken the Japanese Navy’s JN-25b code. Since early 1942, the U.S. had been decoding messages stating that there would soon be an operation” (wiki)
That decoding enabled the decisive US win at Midway atoll, in June; 6 mos. after Pearl Harbor.
If this code was broken a few months earlier than stated…U.S. would have certainly known something of Japan’s attack plans…but FDR needed to overcome a strong resistance to involvement in another offshore war. This could represent the necessary false flag to impel us into war.

Biden has been importing MILLIONS of fit, angry, military age young men from all over the world including the middle east via the wide open Mexican border, and direct daily flights from African muslim nations, with known radicals.’

The entire main watch list of terrorists collected since 9/11 has been scrubbed by Jobama. They have not vetted any of these fighting fit illegals and they are free to got straight from the border to any location (or sleeper cell) in the US, ON YOUR DIME!!! Military Weapons from Ukraine are showing up all over Europe and the US now. This includes street gangs using rocket launchers, and reportedly man-pads.

You only have to watch the video’s of the Israeli music festival where 260 teens were massacred, shot in the back in just minutes, to see what a handful of these unvetted terrorists could do. Think it can’t happen here? You’re delusional. (and that’s before even looking at the mounting evidence that a dark force is actively working to destroy American life, security, stability as we’ve known it)

When Israel invades Gaza, it’s not a great time to attend mass public events, or to visit a synogogue or church without protection. Talk to your board about their carry policies and rules for CCW. This is not to demonize one people or the other. Innocents on both sides are being slaughtered. This is realpolitik. Don’t be naive. America is locked and loaded, and totally vulnerable to similar events, thanks to our traitor in chief. (Is 10% enough for you to sell out your country?)

Practice situational awareness. Assume nothing. Avoid mass events. I hope I’m wrong….”

    Two things about the speakership:

It has never been more obvious that Sundance is right and the government goons hate us; they are threatening to put McCarthy back in the chair. In fact, I’ve begun wondering whether this is a fait accompli and that is why he has just been given the Speaker’s office – after he has been forcibly vacated from the Speakership.

Secondly, why should it mean anything that the Speakership is vacant, isn’t that what the Speaker Pro Tem is for?

That is my question! What is the purpose of having a Speaker Pro Tem if they do not have any authority to act as the Speaker while the chair is vacant? This all feels like a push to get Kevie-boy back into the office or even worse, to come up with some kind of “Bi-Partisan Co-Speaker” as I have heard floated, where McCarthy and Jeffries would have equal power and could “work together” like Schumer and McConnell do in the Senate, albeit not officially, in order to shove through legislation to benefit themselves, their families, and their lobbyist overlords!

    Hmmmmm. Good question.

Something odd happened with the music festival in Israel. The event was planned for another location. It was moved with 48 hours notice, and moved to an area with poor security, in a zone that wasn’t fit for that level of an event. Why would an entire international music festival location be moved with 48 hours notice and moved to an unsecured location?

This was a set up, and a sacrifice.

  21. EXCERPT: “The Taliban has reportedly asked Iran, Iraq and Jordan to grant them passage to Israel so that they can “conquer Jerusalem”. Hamas terrorists launched a surprise assault on Israel today, launching thousands of missiles into the country and crossing the border with armed militants. Israel has retaliated with a series of airstrikes that have killed just under 200 Palestinians, according to latest estimates.

A statement widely circulated online suggests Taliban’s foreign office has contacted Middle Eastern governments requesting passage, seemingly to aid Hamas terrorists and promising to take control of Jerusalem. The statement could not immediately be confirmed. Belarusian news agency NEXTA tweeted: “Russia’s allies, the Taliban terrorist organization supported Hamas: ‘If the Muslim countries neighboring Israel grant us the right of passage, we will conquer Jerusalem.’”

The Taliban government is currently not recognised by any country after the terrorist group seized Afghanistan following 20 years of insurgency. The announcement also comes just days after Ahmed Massoud, the leader of the National Resistance Front in Afghanistan – the primary group fighting the Taliban in the country – said that he would be willing to work with Israel as part of a peace initiative….”

        1. Egyptian trucks bringing fuel, food to Gaza make U-turn after Rafah crossing bombed
By Gianluca Pacchiani Today, 4:58 pm 61

Following the IAF’s afternoon strike at the Rafah crossing, the only active land crossing out of Gaza with the border to Israel sealed, Egyptian trucks that were on the way to the Strip with fuel and goods are forced to turn back.

The bombing came in spite of the fact that an Israeli military official this morning advised Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip for Egypt through Rafah amid the ongoing war with the Hamas terror group. The IDF has since walked back that statement.

Channel 12 claims the crossing was hit to prevent Egypt from providing a lifeline to the besieged Strip.
