Etymology of Words and Phrases

Someone posted something about etymology and it caught my interest – IIRC, I have Duchess to thank!

I decided to do an open about the subject since I have a book about it. But there is so much more in the book than I can put in one open, I expect I’ll be doing more in the future. If anyone has specific words or phrases they are curious about, let me know and I’ll include it in a future open.

First, the definition of etymology:

– The origin and historical development of a linguistic form as shown by determining its basic elements, earliest known use, and changes in form and meaning, tracing its transmission from one language to another, identifying its cognates in other languages, and reconstructing its ancestral form where possible.

– The branch of linguistics that deals with etymologies.

– That part of philology which treats of the history of words in respect both to form and to meanings, tracing them back toward their origin, and setting forth and explaining the changes they have undergone.

CURSOR

It is a Latin term for “flowing” or “running” that gave rise to the word “cursive” to describe handwriting produced in flowing style. The flow of letters that is produced when a pen is guided by skilled fingers is an impressive art. The name for this efficient and effortless writing style, in this computer age, soon was adapted and bestowed upon the small marker that moves quickly and gracefully across a computer screen. The cursor blinks until it is stimulated into action.

TO BOOT

Early computer programmers faced an obstacle: the memories of their computers were wiped clean each time the machines were turned off. To address this problem, the programmers needed to enter a short program called a “bootstrap loader” each time the machine was turned on. When the first desktops first came out, there was a “boot” disc that resided in one drive, while a data disk was in the second drive, where the work was saved. This is the portable laptop I used to take with me on business trips – note the 2 drives side-by-side.

COMPAQ Portable PC

Once this program was read, the computer could then perform more complex functions. The short program gave the machine a “bootstrap” it could then use to perform tasks; without it, the computer was useless. Over time, programmers figured out ways to design software so computers could perform this function automatically, and bootstrap loaders are now part of the basic make-up of any operating system. Pulling oneself up by the “bootstraps” is a means of restarting one’s situation. The expression lives on in the phrase to boot, which today simply means to turn it on, but reflects decades of efforts of computer programmers to make computers easier to use.

CD-ROM

As an abbreviation, this cluster of letters has come to function as a word naming a compact disc crammed with an immense amount of data, graphic material, music, or other sounds. The disc can be read and viewed and printed out, but can’t be altered, making deletion of selected portions impossible. Once the basic nature of this disc is understood, it makes complete sense that the abbreviation stands for “Compact Disc [with] Read-Only Memory.

HANDS DOWN

Plantation owners and merchant princes of colonial America took great interest in horse racing. For many generations major contests were supported largely by the wealthy. After the Civil War, promoters began bidding for attendance by the general public and racing then surged to new popularity and prominence.

Skilled jockeys made an art of timing the final spurt toward the ribbon; sometimes a fellow would be so far ahead of the field that he didn’t have to lift his hands in order to urge his mount forward. Expecting an easy victory, the backer of a horse would boast that his jockey would win hands down. Erupting from racetrack lingo about the turn of the last century, the phrase came to indicate any effortless triumph.

RAISE THE HACKLES

Medieval householders made wide use of flax, whose fibers are so tough they had to be carefully worked with a tool called the hackle. Farmers noticed that angry fowls have a way of raising the feathers on their necks. Disturbed in such a fashion, a bird looked as though someone had rumpled his feathers with a hackle. Hence by 1450, such feathers had taken the name of the combing tool.

Medieval Hackle

Since visible hackles indicated anger, it was natural to say that anything causing an outburst of rage raised the hackles of the offended person.

DERBY

England has few families whose blood is a deeper shade of blue than that of the Stanleys. Descended from an aide of William the Conqueror, this family came into possession of the earldom of Derby in the 15th century. Their name entered common speech because the 12th Earl of a lover of fast horses. With no specific desire for fame, Derby established an annual race for 3 year old horses; first run in 1780, it quickly became the most noted race in England.

American sportsmen who took in the races after the Civil War were impressed by the odd hats some of the English spectators wore. They brought a few of the “Derby hats” back to the US, where a new model was developed. Made of stiff felt with a dome-shaped crown and narrow brim, the derby won the heart of the American male. By the time the first Kentucky Derby was run in 1875, the derby was standard wear for the man of parts. It is merely incidental that the hat also brought a kind of immortality to the distinguished house of Derby.

English Bowler Derby

As a side note…..how did the Kentucky Derby get that name?

“The Kentucky Derby is America’s most celebrated horse race, but its inspiration comes from England.

Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, founder of Churchill Downs, wanted to model the track’s major races after the English classics. The gold standard for Europe’s three-year-olds is the Derby at Epsom, which also stages the corresponding race for three-year-old fillies, called the Oaks.

Both the Epsom Derby and Oaks are contested at about 1 1/2 miles. And originally so were the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, in the early years since their inception in 1875. Both were eventually shortened, with the Kentucky Derby firmly established at its traditional 1 1/4-mile distance in 1896. The Oaks was subsequently held at distances ranging from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/4 miles, finally settling at its current trip of 1 1/8 miles in 1982.

But why were the Epsom classics named the Derby and Oaks at their creation in the late 18th century? An aristocratic connection, of course!

The 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Stanley, was instrumental in the development of both. The fillies’ race was established first in 1779, and named after Stanley’s Surrey estate. Fittingly, he won that inaugural Oaks with Bridget.

That prompted the idea to create another classic, open to both colts and fillies, the following year. According to the oft-told tale, the new race’s name hung on the outcome of a coin flip. Was it to be named after the Earl of Derby, or after his friend, Sir Charles Bunbury? Luckily, the toss came up in favor of the Earl, and the first “Derby” was held at Epsom in 1780. Bunbury didn’t go home empty-handed: his Diomed triumphed in that first running.

With the Epsom Derby giving rise to so many spin-offs around the world, racing fans can be grateful for that toss of the coin. The “Kentucky Bunbury” just wouldn’t have the same ring to it.”

STEALING MY THUNDER

For more than two centuries, the English-speaking world has used the expression “stealing thunder” to mean the appropriation of any effective device or plan that was originated by someone else.

An obscure English dramatis was the father of the phrase. For the production of a play, John Dennis invented a new and more effective way of simulating thunder onstage. His play soon folded but shortly afterward he discovered that his thunder machine was in use for a performance of Macbeth at the same theater.

Dennis was furious!!! “See how the rascals use me?!?” he cried. “They will not let my play run, and yet they steal my thunder.

Democrat blows whistle on alleged ballot harvesting scheme, Florida opens criminal probe
    https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/elections/florida-opens-criminal-probe-democrat-whistleblowers-evidence-ballot

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new election crimes unit has recommended state police open a full criminal investigation into a Democrat whistleblower’s detailed complaint of a long-running, widespread ballot harvesting operation in the African-American communities in politically important central Florida.

Former Orange County Commissioner candidate Cynthia Harris filed a sworn affidavit in late August with the Secretary of State’s office alleging that illegal operations to collect third-party ballots have been going on for years in the Orlando area where voting activists are paid $10 for each ballot they collect.

She described an intricate system funded by liberal leaning organizations that dispatch ballot brokers into black communities to pressure voters to turn over their ballots. The $10 fee per ballot is divvied up among the parties who help complete the harvesting.

The collection and delivery of ballots by third parties is illegal in Florida.

The newly created Office of Election Crimes and Security did a preliminary inquiry on Harris’ allegations and concluded there was sufficient evidence to warrant a full criminal probe by the state police, the Florida State Department told Just the News on Wednesday…

Harris, who narrowly lost her election for county commissioner in August, described to Just the News her years-long knowledge of ballot harvesting in the black communities in central Florida. She even recorded a ballot broker coming to her home in 2017 to collect her ballot, and obtained the script that harvester was given by her bosses to make the pitch for a voter to turn over their ballot.

“So what happens is in our community when absentee ballots are mailed, you the candidate or any political party can find out when the absentee ballots are mailed and to whom what happens is these ballot harvesters, they know which batch has gone out, they go to the door and they ask you for your absentee ballot,” Harris told the “Just the News, No Noise” television show on Wednesday night.

“Well, in communities that don’t look like me, no one does this,” she said, referring to white neighborhoods. “But in our community it’s kind of like an accepted practice that the man is coming by to pick up my absentee ballot or the lady is coming to pick up my absentee ballot.”

In her sworn affidavit, Harris identifies specific individuals who direct and act as ballot brokers and were paid to collect ballots and provides intricate details on how the system allegedly works, along with emails, receipts, video footage and other evidence.

“Ballot brokers typically work up to a year in advance,” she stated. “Ballot brokers visit individuals in their residences and assists the individual with filling out a request for a mail-in ballot. After the mail-in ballot arrives, the voter is instructed to wait for the ballot broker returns to the individuals residence. They are asked to not seal the certificate envelope.”

“In rare circumstances, if the voter has filled out the ballot and sealed the envelope certificate, the ballot broker will take the ballot and then steam open the sealed envelope,” the affidavit added. “The ballot broker will either correct any votes, if necessary, that were not voted according to their wishes or just throw them out.”

Harris described how, much as in Wisconsin, vulnerable patients in rehabilitation centers and nursing homes in Florida were targeted for ballot trafficking.

“For nursing homes … ballot brokers get the list of residents by cross referencing the address with the voter registration list,” she explained. “The ballot broker figures out the best way to make contact, usually thru friends and family that may or may not know they are even part of a scheme. They help the resident fill out the mail-in-ballot or just take the mail-in-ballot from the nursing home and deliver it to the ballot broker.”

Harris, who has worked as an election poll worker in the past, said her biggest concern in coming forward is that ballots collected by third parties have no chain of custody, making it easier to commit fraud such as destroying a ballot or altering it.

“You know, it’s just utterly ridiculous that people don’t understand that once that ballot leaves your hand and it’s not placed in the mailbox, or it’s not directly given to the supervisor of elections, you don’t know where it goes,” she said. “It’s possible that they throw them away. We’ve seen evidence of that.

“You see them steam open the ballots and then they mismark them so that if it’s not for their candidate, then that ballot is spoiled. So when people think that the numbers are low, it’s really not low, it’s just that someone has intercepted before it gets to the proper authorities.”

Harris alleged that the Orange County supervisor of elections, who has held the office for 26 years, has turned a blind eye to ballot harvesting in her community.

“[T]his has been going on for so long, you have to look at the supervisor of elections himself. He’s been there since 1996. That’s 26 years that this has been a blind eye turned on our community, the people that we entrust in the fair elections and the democratic process.

Senator Ted Cruz had the courage and wisdom to write a new and very telling book, “Justice Corrupted, How the Left Weaponized Our Legal System.” It is great, as it spells out in detail things that others, including Republicans, are afraid to discuss – but shouldn’t be. It is a must read for those interested in the new hot subject of Election Fraud, of which our Country has PLENTY. Congratulations Ted! The book is available NOW!

Pa.’s acting Secretary of State warns of possible delays in election results
    October 25, 2022

…it will likely take several days until results are complete and certified.

The state is working with the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security following reports of threats on Pennsylvania’s elections
Voters are encouraged to return mail-in ballots as soon as possible.

“It’s really important for us to get accurate information about the election process in Pennsylvania,” Chapman said.
“So voters and the public know that when there are delays in counting, it doesn’t mean that there’s anything nefarious happening. It’s just what the law is in Pennsylvania.”

When asked about a recent push of Republican messaging that urges voters to hold onto their mail-in ballots instead of mailing them or placing them in an election drop box, and to turn them into their local board of elections on election day, Chapman said the practice could cause voters to become disenfranchised.

“As part of our voter education campaign, we encourage voters to request that mail-in ballot now and return it as soon as possible. We don’t want voters to delay.”

  8. “Judge Blocks New York’s Ban on Guns in Church—for Now”
    October 26, 2022 — News / US News

EXCERPT: “A federal judge last week stopped New York state officials from enforcing the part of a new gun law that bans firearms from places of worship, at least temporarily. The Oct. 20 ruling is a small but important Second Amendment victory for New Yorkers and advocates of self-defense in a state that largely has been hostile to guns under Democrat lawmakers’ policies.

Two church leaders, the Rev. Dr. Jimmie Hardaway Jr. and Bishop Larry A. Boyd, sued the state Oct. 13, arguing that it’s unconstitutional to prohibit guns in churches and other houses of worship. In their lawsuit, Hardaway and Boyd say they “wish to exercise their fundamental, individual right to bear arms in public for self-defense by carrying concealed firearms on church property in case of confrontation to both themselves and their congregants.”

Hardaway is senior pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Niagara Falls. Boyd is the founding pastor of Open Praise Full Gospel Baptist Church in Buffalo. The men claim that, as “leaders of their churches,” they “would be authorized to carry [a firearm] on church premises to keep the peace, and would do so, but for [state officials’] enforcement of the unconstitutional laws, regulations, policies, practices, and customs at issue in this case.”

U.S. District Judge John Sinatra agreed in a 40-page ruling, issuing a temporary restraining order preventing the state of New York from enforcing the law while litigation continues.”

Young upstarts like Ron DeSantis, Glen Youngkin, and Marjorie Taylor Greene are poised to propel the GOP into the stratosphere while the left sucks their binkies and rages at the climate.

Speaking of upstarts, we all know the poster child for GOP upstarts, Donald Trump is almost certainly going to run again in 2024. 11. Pennsylvania GOP Moves To Impeach Philly DA Larry Krasner

Entire Article @ FreeBeacon: “Pennsylvania state House Republicans are moving to impeach Philadelphia district attorney Larry Krasner for his soft-on-crime policies, which they say have fueled the city’s record levels of violent crime.

Republican representatives, led by Rep. Martina White, filed articles of impeachment against the progressive prosecutor Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported. A bipartisan majority of the state House tasked the House Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order to investigate the causes of and solutions to Philadelphia’s historic crime surge. State representative Torren Ecker (R.), a member of the committee, argued impeaching Krasner was a necessary step.

“From the beginning of this process, we have heard devastating stories from victims of crime, businesses who are closing because they do not feel safe, and victims who have been revictimized by a district attorney’s office unwilling to help them when they would rather help criminals,” Ecker said. “That is misbehavior in office, for which [Krasner] should be impeached.”

Philadelphia saw a record 562 homicides last year, and police have reported 438 in 2022 so far, causing many to criticize Krasner’s handling of criminals. Just last week, a murderer whom Krasner freed from a life sentence last year returned to custody for his connection with a second murder, the Washington Free Beacon reported. In April 2021, Krasner downplayed the city’s historic crime surge at a swanky fundraiser just hours after eight people were shot outside a Philadelphia train station.

“The city of Philadelphia cannot afford to wait any longer for us to take action on what we already know to be true: that Krasner is responsible for the rise in crime across our city due to his dereliction of duty to prosecute the guilty and to protect the innocent,” White, whose district includes part of Philadelphia, said in a news conference Wednesday morning.

The GOP-controlled House will need a simple majority to impeach Krasner. The bill would move to the state Senate, which is also controlled by Republicans, for a possible trial. It would need a two-thirds vote to remove Krasner from office.

Krasner called the investigation a “political stunt.” On Twitter, he decried the move as “devastating to democracy” and said “it shows how far toward fascism the Republican party is creeping.”

“We must do something to free the people of Philadelphia from the crime and violence crisis that has destroyed lives and property and made Philadelphians prisoners of fear,” said Pennsylvania House majority leader Kerry Benninghoff (R).”

  12. “Biden Admin Drops $1 Billion on Electric School Buses”

Entire Article @ FB: “(Reuters)—The Biden administration on Wednesday unveiled nearly $1 billion in awards to U.S. school districts to replace aging, gas-fueled school buses with cleaner, mainly electric models.

The funding is the first tranche of $5 billion that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hand out over five years through a clean school bus program created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021. The awards will support the purchase of 2,463 buses, 95% of which will be electric, the White House said. The nearly 400 rebates will go to school districts in all 50 states.

The EPA’s clean school bus program is part of a broader push by the administration to upgrade public school infrastructure and reduce pollution from old buses. It also helps deliver on U.S. President Joe Biden’s pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and funnel federal investments to underserved communities.

Transitioning to an electric school bus fleet nationwide would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5.3 million tons per year, according to a study by the non-profit Public Interest Research Group. That’s about the same as taking one and a half coal plants offline for a year, according to an EPA calculator.

Last month, EPA said it would nearly double its planned $500 million in clean bus awards for this year due to overwhelming demand from school districts. It plans to disburse another $1 billion under the program next year.”

  13. Entire Article @ FB:
“MSNBC Invites Prominent Anti-Semite To Discuss Why Anti-Semites Should Be Canceled — Host Joe Scarborough sponsored congressional resolution condemning Al Sharpton’s ‘racist and anti-Semitic views’

What happened? MSNBC’s Morning Joe invited Al Sharpton to discuss his thoughts on Adidas cutting ties with Kanye West in response to the rapper’s blatantly anti-Semitic comments. “‘Do you have a moral compass?’ every company ought to ask,” Sharpton said after slamming Kanye’s “intentional” anti-Semitism.

    Seriously? Yes.

Al Sharpton? The prominent anti-Semite? Yes. That’s the one. The racist provocateur and tracksuit icon who inflamed the Crown Heights riots of August 1991, one of the worst outbursts of anti-Semitic violence in modern American history.

Sharpton delivered a eulogy for Gavin Cato, the seven-year-old whose accidental death intimated the violence that followed, during which he ranted against Jews. “Talk about how Oppenheimer in South Africa sends diamonds straight to Tel Aviv and deals with the diamond merchants right here in Crown Heights. The issue is not anti-Semitism; the issue is apartheid,” he said. One funeral attendee held a sign that read, “Hitler didn’t finish the job.”

Weeks earlier, Sharpton had publicly defended Leonard Jeffries Jr., a professor of black studies at City College of New York who accused Jews of financing the slave trade and creating “a system of destruction for black people.” Sharpton held a rally and blasted the professor’s critics. “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house,” he fumed.

What the hell? Indeed. Speaking of which, that’s how Sharpton described the Jewish state of Israel during a brief visit while attempting to make a citizen’s arrest. Like being “in hell.”

Sounds like Al Sharpton’s anti-Semitism was “intentional,” right? It definitely was. During his interview on Morning Joe to discuss the Kanye West situation, however, Sharpton alluded to his past anti-Semitism by suggesting he had accidentally said some “things that are harmful and could be interpreted wrong.” He didn’t really “mean it,” unlike Kanye.

And the people at MSNBC really buy that? They don’t care. It’s been more than four years since MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed a hacker planted homophobic, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic comments on her old blog. She hired a cybersecurity expert and notified the FBI, but we’re still awaiting the results of that so-called investigation. Reid was promoted in 2020.

Has Sharpton ever apologized? Not really. In a 2020 article commemorating the Crown Heights riots, Tablet magazine editor at large Liel Leibovitz wrote: “As the years went by, Sharpton was given ample opportunity to apologize for his prominent role in this modern day anti-Semitic bloodletting. He never did.”

When MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was a congressman, did he ever sponsor a resolution condemning Sharpton for his “racist and anti-Semitic views”? He did! In March 2000, then-Rep. Scarborough (R., Fla.) introduced a concurrent resolution blasting Sharpton’s “vicious verbal anti-Semitic attacks directed at members of the Jewish faith,” as well as his “fierce demagoguery [that] incited violence, riots, and murder in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York.”

  14. my goodness…the atrocities…and we remain freaking clueless to “refugee’s and asylum seeker’s” pasts…they drop their passports before they sneak across the border so we don’t have a clue to their pasts…
    FTA
President Joe Biden’s government has just granted the latest “temporary” stay-of-deportation to thousands of African emigres, this time to Ethiopians inside the United States and including those who recently crossed over the southern border. This comes on the heels of a similar “deferred enforced departure” grant to Liberians living in the United States since two 1990s-era civil wars as well as to Cameroonians and Sudanese. Human rights groups who gained those objectives are also pressuring the administration to protect Mauritanians and Congolese.

These immigration moves should not pass without a remark about America’s sometimes naïve penchant for admitting large populations of people from foreign lands of utter barbarity, with little public assurance that background vetting can prevent the importation of human rights violators and war criminals. Some 40 percent of those reaching the southern border are coming from 150 countries other than Mexico and Central America, a record percentage that includes representation from throughout Africa.

Stepping through the ruins of America’s collapsing southern border and other legal admittance processes are thousands of people from African nations teaming with tribal warlords and vicious armed militias that rape, pillage, plunder, and murder. Perhaps many are actually persecuted victims of these militias.

But “Jungle Jabbah” of Liberia was certainly not one of them. He is on a long and lengthening list of vicious African war criminals that Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center (HRVWCC) has rousted from U.S. hiding in just the past couple of years, including an Ethiopian living in Georgia who tortured his victims to unconsciousness and was convicted of gross human rights abuses in absentia.

  15. this is a loophole and cannot be allowed to stand! paperwork not filed on time is allowing currently 65,000 illegals to not have to appear for a hearing and they are free to APPLY for citizenship…this is backdoor AMNESTY!!!!
    entire frustrating article
The Biden administration has come up with a stealthy new tack for granting amnesty to the two million illegal aliens who’ve crossed into the states in the last two years: By “forgetting” to file the paperwork on time.

    According to Fox News:

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants had their cases thrown out by immigration judges after documents were not filed in time by Department of Homeland Security officials, according to newly released data.

Data obtained and analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University, found that 63,586 cases were dismissed in FY 2022 as of the end of September because officials, mainly Border Patrol agents, are not filing the Notice to Appear (NTA) in time.

That may not seem like much of anything on the surface, but for illegal immigrants, that’s winning the jackpot.

According to Fox, it begins like this:

TRAC, which obtained the numbers via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, found that numbers spiked from less than 1,000 incidents of no NTAs being filed in February and March 2021 to more than 5,000 a month in late 2021 and 2022. In April 2022, more than 7,000 cases were thrown out.

Now it’s 63,586 cases, as the earlier part of the Fox report, cited above, indicated. What a coincidence. Suddenly, the paperwork is not being filed on time. Suddenly, someone who used to do his job right is … not doing his job right. Suddenly, someone … forgot. Don’t tell us that’s not some kind of amnesty-through-incompetence passive-aggressive policy. It’s just amazing how Biden’s policy always seems to go one way — benefitting the illegally present foreigner.

Fox continues into how it gets good for the illegal aliens:

The research center says that the amount of cases being thrown out is not only wasteful of the court’s time, but also problematic for the immigrants involved — who may turn up for a court date only to have the case dismissed, and be left in limbo as to their status and what to do next.

With no court case against them, they are free to move about the country, and more specifically, file for green cards and U.S. citizenship. The absence of any court case to resolve regarding their immigration status leaves them free to apply, and with Joe Biden’s yes-men at the ready, free to get those green cards.

The precedent for that was from an incident earlier this year, similar, but not the same, to this curious approach to what is effectively amnesty.

Back in June, the Washington Examiner reported that federal prosecutors were simply dropping a million cases for no reason whatsoever:

Federal prosecutors are quietly dismissing stacks of cases against illegal immigrants [sic] under a Biden administration mandate that could be on pace to effectively pardon 1 million people by 2024, according to leaked information reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

Attorneys for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have begun to throw out tens of thousands of the 2 million backlogged cases in immigration court following a political appointee’s order not to go after illegal border crossers from before the November 2020 election.
“This is a de facto amnesty,” said an ICE federal prosecutor who spoke with the Washington Examiner on the condition of anonymity.

The impact? According to the Examiner:

The tens of thousands of noncitizens who have been cleared from the immigration court dockets over the past eight weeks may now apply to become permanent legal residents, the prerequisite to becoming a U.S. citizen. An illegal border crosser is barred from applying for legal permanent residency as long as his or her case is pending in court. With no case pending, they may apply. Once approved, they may apply for adjustment of status to citizenship after five years.

“All those removable aliens will be able to live and work in the United States indefinitely — which, in this context, means forever or at least until they themselves decide to leave. That is the definition of an amnesty,” Arthur wrote.

The illegals whose fed minders are “forgetting” to file the paperwork may get a new date, as the Fox report notes, but the report suggested that that was discretionary. More likely, they won’t get a new date, and the dockets will clear for them to remain in the country without any lawmen looking for them as they vote, collect welfare, clog emergency rooms, and take American jobs, while being free to apply for green cards and U.S. citizenship well ahead of all the legal applicants for entry to the U.S. who are doing it the right way.

The news of this “forgetfulness” on the part of the Biden administration officials is bound to filter back to the human smuggling rackets, who use this kind of news to recruit migrant caravans on social media and among would-be illegal migrants themselves, who follow this kind of news from the U.S. closely.

Already, the numbers of illegal aliens rolling in is hitting record highs.

Here are the human waves in Colombia who are heading to the states, just from Venezuela alone, their human traffickers at the sidelines, herding them like sheep. Many of the migrants in these rivers of humanity are Venezuelans who had already fled to other Latin American countries in years past and are now responding to the U.S.’s open door:

Colombia alerta sobre grave crisis en la frontera con Panamá: TRES MIL migrantes llegan cada día para cruzar el #Darién 90.000 AL MES.😱💀😡

¡GRAN CRISIS HUMANITARIA QUE VIVIMOS EN VENEZUELA, Y HAY RATAS CHAVISTAS QUE DICEN: “VENEZUELA SE ARREGLÓ”!😡💀🥴pic.twitter.com/6cGZKNajsF
    — Resistencia Venezuela🇺🇦🇻🇪200K🛡💥⚔💪🔥 (@NEORAM27) October 9, 2022

The tweet says it’s 90,000 migrants a month making that passage, and Colombia is calling it a grave crisis. Venezuela is just one country. Migrants are rolling in from more than 100 countries, according to Border Patrol data.

Now they’re “forgetting” to file paperwork, and migrants are finding it easier than ever to gain free admission to the U.S. whether the locals want it or not. Other than inflation, is there any greater Biden failure?

    1. I was thinking about that and trying to gauge how many opens I could get out of it. Probably a bunch, tbh. I can probably do one a month – I’ll shoot for that. But if you could do me a favor and let me know which days you don’t have anything scheduled. I don’t want to tie myself down to a specific number or a regular day.

  17. they find klain guilty of violating the hatch act–but no disciplinary action and case closed
    entire article
White House chief of staff and serial Twitter user Ron Klain violated the Hatch Act, a federal law that forbids government employees from engaging in campaign-related activity, according to an Office of Special Counsel letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The violation occurred earlier this year when Klain retweeted the left-wing political action committee Strike PAC on May 22, the Office of Special Counsel said in its letter to the America First Legal. The tweet thanked President Joe Biden for delivering infant formula to the United States amid a national shortage, and linked to the commitee’s online store.

Such conduct is illegal. The Hatch Act forbids federal “employees from, among other things, using their official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with or affecting the result of an election and knowingly soliciting, accepting, or receiving political contributions from any person.”

The Hatch Act violation is one in a series of White House controversies that stem from Klain’s habitual use of Twitter. As the Free Beacon previously reported, Klain’s Twitter feed often provides a window into the inner workings of the White House.

Klain’s Twitter feed has revealed, among many other things, his preference for a $23 minimum wage and how the Washington Post‘s Jennifer Rubin holds tremendous influence over the Biden administration’s policy decisions. In the midst of the United States’ disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, Klain was on Twitter liking tweets by a left-wing pundit who said “we know war is messy.”

Despite the violation of federal law, the chief of the office’s Hatch Act Unit concluded it would not charge Klain with a crime. Instead, the agency’s vice president and general counsel sent Klain a warning letter.

“Although OSC has concluded that Mr. Klain violated the Hatch Act, we understand that he promptly removed the retweet upon being notified of this complaint,” the letter states. “Accordingly, we have decided not to pursue disciplinary action and will close this matter.”

      1. No, I forgot I had already posted it…..ooopsie! LOL – doing too many things at once, as usual! When I went out to the PO earlier, I also stopped to get some name-brand beets – don’t ask me why but I have a craving for ’em – I picked up some generic and they just don’t taste that good. If these don’t either, I’ll buy some beets and get Mom to pickle them for me – she makes AWESOME pickled beets!

Anyway, I was just wandering around Family Dollar – still not happy with my kitchen window situation – I decided I wanted to go back to one of the accordion blinds. I want one I can just push up and pull down but I found one that is chocolate covered that doesn’t have any interior strings – you just move it up and down with your hand and put the 2 clips on it that are provided – $6! And it works perfectly for my bathroom since I don’t open that blind much! Sun-blocking, too!

I’m going to go back and get 3 more: kitchen and the 2 south windows in my bedroom. The more expensive kind I put in almost 10 years ago have almost doubled in price so I refuse to pay for ’em but they are wearing out now. I did spring for the $$$ to replace the ones on my patio doors last year, when I had my visitors from WA.

  18. “Germany: Kids forced to eat vegetarian school lunches in Freiburg after meat gets canceled, move sparks fury among parents who have to pay even more for meals — “We want to keep the cost increases under control,” claims education head Christine Buchheit (Greens)”

Entire Article @ ReMIX: “Starting next school year, children in municipal daycare centers and elementary schools in the German city of Freiburg will only be able to eat vegetarian food and also have to pay more for school meals, but not everyone is happy about the change.

The decision to enforce a strictly vegetarian diet on schoolchildren came after a vote by the municipal council of the southern Baden city on Tuesday evening. Instead of two menus, there will only be one in the future and it will be vegetarian, despite a price increase of 90 cents, prompting clashes between parents and politicians. In addition, the prices for school meals will gradually increase from the 2023/24 school year, reports Germany’s Tagesspiegel newspaper. The proposal received some heavy criticism, including from parents’ councils. Nevertheless, it was approved with 27 votes in favor to 14 against.

So far, there have been two meal options with meat and fish also being included in the mix. The city is restricting the choice of warm lunches, mainly for cost reasons. The proportion of organic products in school and daycare catering is to rise to 30 percent, up from 20 percent.

The Freiburg initiative is unusual in the southwest: The Stuttgart Ministry of Agriculture and Food said it was not aware of any other city or municipality offering completely meat-free food in daycare centers and schools. More than 500,000 lunches are served in the canteens of Freiburg schools every year. The Stuttgart Ministry of Agriculture and Food distanced itself from the decision, saying that meat is also part of a balanced diet. The ministry, led by department head Peter Hauk of the Christian Democrats (CDU), therefore, does not support an exclusively vegetarian diet as a requirement.

“Children should have the opportunity during their development to develop their taste and try things out. This also includes eating meat,” said the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Agriculture and Food. While it accepted that reduced quantities may be appropriate, the ministry argued that no other German city or municipality was insisting on a completely meat-free diet in its educational facilities.

“The students are told what they have to eat,” criticized Gerlinde Schrempp from the Free Voters at the debate in the Freiburg municipal council. City councilor Franco Orlando from the parliamentary group of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and Citizens for Freiburg (BFF) had previously stated that the city leaders under the non-party mayor Martin Horn saw “meat consumption as a thorn in their side.” The Green-Red coalition has a majority in the municipal council.

As inflation wreaks havoc on German pocketbooks, Freiburg is not only dropping meat, but also increasing the costs of school meals by 90 cents. Freiburg education head, Christine Buchheit (Greens), said: “We want to keep the cost increases under control,” adding that good meat is a price driver.

The Baden-Württemberg State Parents’ Advisory Council also raised clear objections. Parents would already have to pay for the children’s transport to school, said its chairman, Michael Mittelstaedt, to the German Press Agency, arguing there should not be any new costs for parents. “What justification is there for vegetarian food to cost more than meat-based food? Organic seal? Ridiculous,” said Mittelstaedt. He added that it is the task of society to change eating habits, “so, subsidies would be more than appropriate here.”

Vice-chairman of the Freiburg Parents’ Council, Sebastian Kölsch, criticized the idea that parents’ contribution for school lunch, currently €3.90, should rise to €4.80 by next September. “According to our research, Freiburg is already at the top with its prices for large cities in the southwest,” he told the German Press Agency.”

  19. Enough is enough!!! The French had better wake the fuck up!!!!

Entire Article @ ReMIX: “The father of the 6-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 16-year-old “unaccompanied” Guinean migrant in the French city of Roanne is now under investigation for violence against the alleged assailant. If charged, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

The 16-year-old migrant is suspected of entering the family home on Friday and proceeding to sexually assault a six-year-old child. The mother was alerted to the migrant teenager’s presence due to moaning and other noises the mother heard coming from their 6-year-old daughter’s room. The mother, who was feeding the family’s baby at the time, opened the door and saw the teenager molesting their daughter, at which point the mother began screaming. The migrant then fled the house. It is unclear how he entered the room, whether through a window or by other means.

The next night, the father apparently went looking for the suspect along with other individuals involved in a neighborhood patrol. The mother was with them and identified the suspect from the previous night. The father reportedly kicked and punched the migrant with the help of three other men, according to a report from French news outlet BFMTV, which cited judicial sources. The father is also accused whipping the suspect with an electrical cord and then beating him with an iron bar.

“I beat him up,” admitted the father on BFMTV, saying he was “in an altered state of mind” at the time of the events. “I should not have done it, but I do not regret it in any case. (…) Fortunately, there were my friends (to stop me), and I was lucid enough to call the police; otherwise it is possible that I would have gone further. Once my wife formally recognized him (…) I couldn’t see anything anymore, I wasn’t even listening to my wife. (…) I said ‘it’s him’, he tried to run away, I caught him.”

The teenager is in custody and being charged for the sexual assault, but police are also investigating “aggravated violence committed with a purposeful weapon” against the father. For this alleged crime, the father faces three to 10 years in prison depending on the number of charges and how the judge might decide the case. At the moment, no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

The migrant was reportedly in France for only two weeks before he tried to rape the little girl. He was housed in a migrant center that was installed close to the house where the incident occurred. The father says that others would have done what he did. “Anybody would have done the same thing I did. Of course, I shouldn’t have done it, but I don’t regret having done it,” says the man who is now considered a suspect. “My wife and daughter do not sleep anymore.”

The father says he doubted the ability of the police to find the attacker after filing a complaint: “The same evening, there were no rounds, and no police patrols passed, there was nothing. I could feel that the person was not very far away, he disappeared too quickly. In fact, he lived not very far from me: opposite, 100 meters, not even that.”

The father in the case is not the only one who said he would have reacted with violence. “I don’t know what I would have done; maybe I would have reacted exactly the same way,” said Aurélien Pradié, who serves as a deputy for The Republicans (LR) in Lot on the CNews television program. However, Pradié said he is a politician and must also urge restraint despite the challenges faced by the French citizenry. “I can’t give in to the ease of saying to my fellow citizens: Tomorrow, the Republic fades away, justice fades away, the police fade away, and it’s each of you who will exact justice yourselves,” he stated.

As crime skyrockets in France in tandem with mass migration, French citizens are increasingly taking the law into their own hands, and sometimes suffering the consequences. For example, it was just last month when a French man in his 60s tried to intervene when he spotted two men robbing his neighbor’s house in the French town of Pornic. One of the men, a 20-year-old illegal migrant from Brazil, then stabbed the elderly man to death when he tried to stop them from robbing the house; the second suspect remains on the run.

Other crimes targeting young people have made international headlines as of late, with the case of 12-year-old Lola, who was raped, tortured, and murdered by an Algerian illegal migrant, sparking a national debate around migration and the left-wing French government’s failure to deport criminals.

“I don’t regret it” — The father in the case says he realizes he faces serious consequences due to the ongoing investigation, but he is not backing down out of love for his family. “It is now me who finds himself accused; the world is upside down,” he reacted. “But I don’t regret it, I could get 30 years; it’s not serious, it’s for my daughter.”

He said that his wife and daughter “do not sleep anymore” and that he has moved to his brother’s house. He is now waiting to move into an apartment that a friend is lending to him, all in an effort to get away from another potential attack. The man is also getting support from his neighborhood. “Anyone would have done the same thing, it’s legitimate what he did. With some of the reactions of other fathers, it could have been worse,” a neighbor told BFMTV.”

  20. Meanwhile…..Entire Article @ ReMIX:

“Macron says half the crimes in Paris are committed by foreigners” — Macron is still pushing for more mass immigration despite data showing the tremendous crime rate of foreign nationals

French President Emmanuel Macron delivers his speech at “Cry for peace,” an international conference for peace organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)

French President Emmanuel Macron admits that half the crimes committed in Paris are the work of foreigners during an interview yesterday on the France 2 television channel. “Yes, when we look at delinquency in Paris, we can see that half of the delinquent acts come from foreigners in an irregular situation or awaiting asylum approval,” said Macron. However, Macron also said that despite the issue with immigration and insecurity, he sees no “existential” link between the two.

“I will never make an existential link between immigration and insecurity,” said Macron just 10 days after the murder of 12-year-old Lola, who was raped, had her throat slashed, and was stuffed in a suitcase by an Algerian migrant who was in the country illegally.

Macron is under severe pressure after the murder, with a number of leading opposition politicians laying the blame for the murder at his feet and pointing to his abysmal record on deportations. Macron previously promised in 2020 that he was aiming for a 100 percent deportation rate. That rate currently hovers under 6 percent, and in the case of Algerians, it is 0.2 percent.

Despite growing anger, Macron is pushing a plan to send more migrants to the countryside, a move that is overwhelming rejected by the French public there. He also said in February of this year that migration from Africa and the Middle East “can make France greater.”

On top of inflation and growing unrest, the issue of immigration is turning political opinion against the French leader. As in the past, such as following the beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty by a Chechen Islamist teen, Macron has put forward a number of “reforms” to assuage public anger, but many of the proposals were never enforced or have done little to disrupt France’s issues with insecurity, including a 91 percent increase in murders since 2000.

This time around, Macron claims he wants “in-depth reform” and a “debate in parliament on immigration.” “We must reform our laws in depth to be able to better welcome those we want to welcome,” he said during the Europe 2 interview. He offered little in terms of how he plans to address problems with integration and the country’s inability to deport cirminal migrants.

However, Macron’s admission that illegal migrants or migrants awaiting asylum are responsible for half the crime in Paris is supported by data. The recently retired Paris chief of police, Didier Lallement, made assertions just this month, writing in his new book that “one out of every two crimes is committed by a foreigner, who are often in the country illegally… It is clear that some of the newcomers are integrating through delinquency.”

It is also unclear what the racial and ethnic breakdown of crime statistics is in France, as there are many French citizens of “foreign origin” who are not counted as foreigners since they have obtained citizenship. France does not keep data on the ethnic or racial identity of suspects. However, in other cities, such as Marseilles, 55 percent of all crimes are committed by foreigners, a rate even higher than Paris, illustrating that it is a countrywide issue.”

  21. EXCERPTS: “Orbán slams Germany’s left-wing parties, praises Hungarian ideology, and insists country is open and welcoming to Western refugees sick of multiculturalism — the Hungarian prime minister discussed a range of topics with the German-language Hungarian newspaper Budapester Zeitung”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently sat down for an interview with Budapester Zeitung, a German-language Hungarian newspaper. In the wide-ranging talk, Orbán discussed among other topics his recent work visit to Berlin, the state of ongoing German-Hungarian relations, and the future of Western Europe’s identity.

German-Hungarian relations — The Hungarian prime minister said German-Hungarian relations are strong in almost all areas, but insisted that politically there was work to be done, as the ideologies of the two countries’ current administrations are “worlds apart.”

“Germans living in Hungary are doing well. From kindergarten to university, you can learn German with us. In Hungary, there is no resentment towards the Germans. A country in which there are more positive than negative feelings towards Germans is rare in Central Europe. The Germans are still held in high esteem in Hungary. Last but not least, the Hungarian Germans living in Hungary have contributed a lot to this. You are valued citizens of Hungary.”
    —————–
Germany is moving “more and more to the left” — The Hungarian prime minister elaborated on this point when asked how his recent work visit to Berlin was received. He said he travels to Germany every two years for a work visit and therefore sees the progressive change in the country, which he now confirms has become a “multicultural society… This is no longer a question of a political program, but a fact.”
    —————–
He does, however, have a few choice words on the point, telling the newspaper:

“Compared to Germany, Hungary is now an island of peace and freedom. A liberal hegemony now prevails in Germany. Only one narrative has space in public. Anyone who deviates from this no longer exists for this public. In Hungary, on the other hand, we have a pluralistic structure in public dialogue. There are liberals and conservatives. Through the media, they are almost equally represented in public discourse. Hungarian society is significantly more pluralistic, freer, and more peaceful than German society.”
    ——————
More Europeans will move to safe Hungary in the next 20 years, predicts Orbán
The Hungarian prime minister agreed with the interviewer that more and more Germans are seeing their future in Hungary, and Orbán encourages “Germans and other Western Europeans to come to us.”

“In the next 10 to 20 years, more and more western Europeans will come to us who would rather live with us because Hungary is a safe, Christian, and tradition-conscious country.”

He insisted that emigration to Hungary from Western Europe is “extremely good and welcome,” and believes that Europeans “who want to live freely and in a different environment than at home should move on to us.” Orbán said they will be welcomed with “open arms.”

“Hungary is a country where many more people could live than currently live here. We are happy when foreigners who like our way of thinking come to us,” the Hungarian leader said. He added that while Hungarian isn’t that easy to learn, it is a “fantastic language” that newcomers will be happy to use when they have learned it.

In short, Hungary remains open to citizens “who treat us and our traditions with respect,” Orbán said, concluding with the phrase: “Western refugees welcome!”
