DIY 1 Minute

I found this idea on The Pioneer Woman’s website, and it’s simple, easy to do and great for your drawers, your car, or anywhere you’d like a nice scent. And YOU control the density of the fragrance.

I’m thinking about making some in Christmas fabrics and maybe using cinnamon or pine scent!

You’ll need:

fabric scraps

needle

thread

rice

your favorite dried flowers or spices

essential oil

ribbons

scissors

pinking shears

clear nail polish

Step one: Choose your fabric and start by making a pouch. Fold over a rectangular piece of fabric so the pattern is on the inside. Sew the two outer sides together. Use whatever stitch you want as long as it’s going to hold! If you’re not a strong sewer, fabric repair adhesive works well too. Just go light on the application; the adhesive spreads as you smooth the edges.

(Note that if you don’t want to worry about seams at all, you can just make a circle and gather it and tie it to make it easy!)

Step two: Turn the pouches pattern-side out and set aside. Mix together your rice and dried flowers or herbs. We used lavender and it was nice and potent, but try eucalyptus, rose, vanilla—just follow your nose. If you’re looking for a scent you might not be able to find in a dried plant, use a drop or two of essential oils mixed in with the rice until you reach your desired level of scent.

Step three: Fill your pouches with the scented rice concoction and be extra careful! Those tiny pieces of rice spill easily and get everywhere.

Step four: Once the pouch is at your desired level of plumpness, tie the top with a colorful ribbon. Finish the fabric at the top with the pinking shears. To prevent the top from fraying, gently coat the edge with a thin layer of clear nail polish. And you’re done! The beauty of not sewing the top closed is that you can refresh the inside as needed if it’s starting to lose its scent.

    chilly out there again this morning!
    we made our banana run yesterday…here’s my ground report. I have been watching turkey breast prices for the last 4 months. They have held steady for that at $2.28/pound. yesterday, the selection was significantly lower –they were only 6 available and none were 6 pounds or more, and the price had climbed to $2.48/pound.
    cool whip had jumped again to $1.98!
    and they removed all the gum from the candy aisle…???
    I asked a stock person where they moved it to…he got out his electronic doohicky to check and said “hunh…dunno”

    1. It might be well to remember that corporate interests were not in favor of racial segregation in the US. Woolworth’s didn’t want two lunch counters, buses didn’t want to have fronts and backs, nobody wanted to plumb two sets of water fountains (and bathrooms) so they could be segregated.

      These issues, and more, were imposed by governments to generate strife.

    General Motors Co. did an about-face on its own return-to-office plan Tuesday after causing an uproar among employees.

    The original plan, released last Friday, required all GM corporate employees to come into physical locations for three days a week before the end of the year.

    A weekend of employee backlash prompted a revised plan to be released Tuesday, which said that the decision to return to the office in a hybrid fashion would for now be left up to individual teams.

    “We acknowledge that the timing of the [first] message, late on a Friday afternoon, was unfortunate. It was also unintentional,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in the Tuesday follow-up statement that was obtained by multiple outlets.

    That said, the automotive giant hasn’t changed its goal of getting people back in the office three days a week by the start of the new year.

    GM had been operating off what it called its “Work Appropriately” model since April 2021, where employees had the flexibility to work remotely full-time or hybridly depending on the demands of a current project.

    The policy provided a boost to GM‘s recruiting efforts last year, according to the Detroit Free Press. The company hired 10,000 people globally in 2021 and another 7,000 this year, most of whom work remotely.

    But Ms. Barra said in her Tuesday statement that “the intangible benefits of in person collaboration are going to be a critical success factor as we move into a period of rapid launches.”

    GM intends to listen to employee feedback and incorporate it in its updated plan to be released next month.

For a guy who likes to rail on Davos, passing Davos-inspired legislation and hiring their people raises some eyebrows.

    DeSantis is not a foreigner to the good old boys’ club either, having come up through the Ivy Leagues at Yale and Harvard. He was a standout baseball player at Yale, as was our forty-first President George H.W. Bush, whom their field is named after. DeSantis was also a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Yale, just as notable members George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh were. For a fraternal organization, that’s an impressive list of notable Republican membership.

    In a conversation about MAGA politics, DeSantis is the lone heir apparent of the MAGA movement in rhetoric and airtime. While his good looks, charisma, and forthright temperament make him an attractive choice for the lead role as President of the United States, his résumé takes a backseat to the publicity. A deeper dive into the casting crew raises eyebrows as well. To date, DeSantis has raised more than $142 million for a statewide race, largely from a small but wealthy national insider audience. Speaking of a national audience, it cannot be discounted that every time Trump endorsed a Republican primary candidate around the country, DeSantis has shown up to speak on their behalf and co-opt the MAGA brand while remaining at arms-length from Trump himself.

The initiative was conducted by Moms Across America – mothers, fathers and students who gathered school lunch samples. The testing was funded by Moms Across America supporters and Children’s Health Defense.

    Moms Across America Director Zen Honeycutt stated: “These test results of the school lunches show us that we have a national crisis on our hands. Our government is allowing our children to be poisoned with a shocking number of toxins that contribute to various health, behavioral and learning issues. In addition, the nutrient density of the food is almost completely deficient, leaving our children’s bodies starving for nutrients, unable to develop properly and lacking nutrients that their brains need to learn and make sound decisions. If our government cares about America remaining a superpower and a prosperous nation, it must immediately take action to supply organically grown, nutrient-dense food to our nation’s children.”

    The results show that the food America’s children eat at school is unsafe, toxic and low in nutrients:

    – Of the 43 school items tested, 41, or 95.3%, had detectable levels of glyphosate weed killer, the most widely used herbicide in the world, a known carcinogen.

    – The highest level of glyphosate and AMPA (AMPA is glyphosate’s breakdown and can be even more toxic) were found in a beef taco with soft tortilla at 286.77 ng/g and in pizza at 156.14 ng/g.
    28 of the 43 school meal samples, or 65.1%, contained wheat ingredients.

    – 100% of the wheat products were positive with glyphosate, averaging 42.09 ng/g.

    – The average level of glyphosate in pizza was 154.51 ng/g.

    Several items had very high glyphosate levels, well above 25 ng/g, which, according to animal studies, would be expected to be harmful when consumed consistently, along with other items containing glyphosate. Glyphosate has been shown to be carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, damaging to sperm and reproductive organs, causing nervous system damage and causing liver and kidney disease.

    We also tested for 220 of the most egregious pesticides:

    – 4 Veterinary drugs and hormones were found in 9 school lunch samples at levels up to 130.76 ng/g.

    – 100% of the school lunch samples contained heavy metals at levels up to 6,293 X higher than the EPA’s maximum levels allowed in drinking water.

    – The majority of the samples were abysmally low in nutrients.

    Without proper nutrients in food, children will not develop properly and be able to think, learn and act to their fullest potential. Proper nutrition can be instrumental in reducing and preventing learning disorders and violent behavior. Safe, non-toxic, nutrient-dense food is essential for the health of our children and the future of our nation. America should invest in healthy, safe nutrition for every child in our public schools.”

      1. I always had to bring my lunch. I remember wishing I could be like everyone else and eat cafeteria food…….back then, tho, it was REAL food! When I went to P’s school for Grandparents Day, the food just flat-out sucked – the meat didn’t even look like meat!

    Hundreds of Homeland Security employees were paid unemployment benefits during the pandemic despite being on the job, the department’s inspector general revealed Thursday.

    Even worse, some of the unemployment money was actually paid by Homeland Security itself under an emergency unemployment program the Trump administration “hastily” created in 2020, investigators said. That meant the department was making bogus payments to its employees.

    The audit identified nearly 2,400 claims from Homeland Security employees and found about 600 of them were clearly eligible. Roughly 900 others were deemed “potentially” ineligible, and the remaining 900 or so were definitely ineligible, the inspector general said.

    Some may have been cases of identity fraud, with someone filing a bogus claim in the name of an unsuspecting employee. But other cases appear to be old-fashioned double-dipping.

    Nearly three dozen employees even filed unemployment claims from Homeland Security computer systems, suggesting they were on the job at the exact time they were claiming unemployment.

    In 366 cases, pay records showed that employees received unemployment benefits even though they were not just working, but also putting in overtime or extra shifts. One employee averaged 147 hours of work per two-week pay period while the department was also paying unemployment.

    Sen. Rob Portman, the top Republican on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said he was “alarmed” by the findings.

    “If these allegations are correct, those in charge of protecting our homeland were exploiting it for personal gain,” he said.

    He asked the Justice Department to pursue action against any employees who were double-dipping.

    The inspector general’s report focused on an emergency unemployment program that the Trump administration created at the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the summer of 2020.

    While Congress had created an initial $600-a-week additional unemployment benefit at the start of the pandemic, lawmakers couldn’t agree on an extension, so the administration used disaster money at FEMA to add six more weeks of benefits, at either $300 or $400.

    Like the main unemployment program, the federal money went to states’ workforce agencies (SWA), which actually made the payments.

    And like the main pandemic unemployment program, the FEMA program was rife with fraud, the inspector general concluded. In a report earlier this month, investigators identified roughly 10% of the FEMA unemployment money showed signs of improper payments.

    Thursday’s report put a fine point on the matter, with investigators finding problems inside Homeland Security — which oversees FEMA.

    The audit said “FEMA overly relied” on the existing unemployment system, which had serious weaknesses. And FEMA didn’t require states to impose critical fraud checks before spending the money.

    Roughly 770 employees at the Transportation Security Administration were paid unemployment, with only about 150 of those being deemed clearly eligible.

    At FEMA itself, more than 1,100 employees were paid, and just 400 of those claims were deemed clearly eligible — and 111 of those were still probably fraudulent.

    All told, the department paid $2.6 million in disaster unemployment benefits to employees who weren’t clearly eligible.

    Jim H. Crumpacker, Homeland Security’s liaison to the inspector general, said in an official reply to the report that FEMA had to rush to create the emergency unemployment program in August 2020, and made its first payment just six days after then-President Trump established the program.

    But he complained that the inspector general ignored anti-fraud efforts the department did undertake.

    The inspector general said those came too late.

    “FEMA’s policies did not require SWAs to implement controls to prevent fraud from occurring; instead, they focused on detecting fraud after the fraudulent activity already occurred,” the audit said.

    Today, we post more of the financial disclosures that Dr. Fauci didn’t want you to see. Here’s a summary of our findings from the latest document release:

    · Net Worth: The Fauci household disclosed net worth increased from $7.6 million (January 1, 2019) to over $12.6 million (December 31, 2021).

    · Top Paid: Fauci continued to be the most highly compensated federal employee earning $456,000 in 2021 and $480,000 in 2022. Fauci out-earned the president, four-star generals, and roughly 4.3 million other federal bureaucrats.

    · Big Awards: In 2021, Fauci augmented his government income with nearly $1 million in prizes from non-profit organizations across the world. For example, the Dan David Foundation, based in Israel, awarded $901,400 for “speaking truth to power” and “defending science” during the Trump administration.

    During the ongoing pandemic year of 2021, the Fauci’s household income, perks and benefits, and unrealized investment gains totaled $2,832,876 — including federal income and benefits of $903,497; outside royalties and travel perks totaling $919,205; and $910,174 in investment gains.

    After 9/11, for instance, FBI employees, including the management of the New York Field Office, sounded the alarm over the abuse of national security surveillance powers, warning then-Director Robert Mueller that the bureau “should not be opening counterterrorism investigations based solely and exclusively on National Security Agency intercepts of conversations of US citizens,” says Turchie.

    “Mueller rejected that advice.”

    In 2013, when Mueller retired, hundreds of FBI employees signed a letter to incoming Director James Comey, warning him about “political bias and political compromise of the FBI,” and saying that Mueller had led the bureau in the “wrong direction … as a result of its transformation from a law enforcement to an intelligence organization.”

    Comey did not even acknowledge that he had received the letter and the FBI has continued down the same ill-fated path to this day, with current Director Christopher Wray “doubling down on that course.”

    “The FBI has been collapsed into nothing more than a police agency for the Democratic Party,” says Turchie. “Many of us feel that over the decades [we have seen] the complete compromise of the bureau.”

    More than 20 FBI whistleblowers have come forward to Republican members of Congress in recent months, and Turchie says those numbers will grow.

    According to the indictment, Gabrielian an instructor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Hopkins, told the undercover agent that ‘she was motivated by patriotism toward Russia to provide any assistance she could to Russia, even if it meant being fired or going to jail.’

    She allegedly told the agent that Henry had not only access to medical information at the military base, but also insight on how America was training the military to provide assistance to Ukraine.

    By August 31, Gabrielian met a the agent in a hotel in Gaithersburg, Maryland, offering medical records of a spouse from a service member in the Office of Naval Intelligence and of a relative from an Air Force veteran.

    ‘Gabrielian highlighted to the [undercover agent] a medical issue reflected in the records of [the military member’s spouse] that Russia could exploit,’ the indictment reads.

    During that meeting, Henry also handed over medical information on five patients at Fort Bragg, including that of a retired Army officer, a Department of Defense employee and spouses of active and deceased veterans.

    The pair were ultimately charged with conspiracy and wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information.

    1. It depends on how dark green they are and whether they are big enough to be worth picking. But, yes, they will ripen. I frequently picked tomatoes still fairly green, and some totally green, and set them on the windowsills. Some will ripen better than others. During the heat of summer, it was too hot on the sills so I piled them on the table on my patio and they ripened there, out of the sun.

  36. judge orders the production of seth rich’s laptop

    Today, a federal judge ordered the FBI to “produce the information it possesses related to Seth Rich’s laptop.”

    This case involves a multi-year fight by attorney Ty Clevenger to obtain records relating to the FBI/DOJ investigation of Seth Rich, particularly whether Rich was involved in the hack of the DNC or had communicated with Wikileaks.

    This fight dates back to 2017 and includes two FOIA lawsuit. In the first lawsuit, the FBI produced no responsive documents. The parties knew the FBI had something, and so this sparked a second lawsuit – where the FBI somehow found 20,000 pages of potentially responsive documents. The court explains:

    Of those 20,000 pages, the government found 1,596 pages of responsive documents, of which the government withheld 1,469 pages under various FOIA exemptions (privacy, law enforcement exemption, etc.).

    The FBI also withheld the contents of Seth Rich’s personal laptop, which it possesses, in its entirety, alleging the privacy of Rich’s family in “preventing the public release of this information” outweighs the public interest in disclosure.

    The court rejected that argument, stating “the FBI has not satisfied its burden of showing more than a de minimis privacy interest that would justify withholding information from Seth Rich’s laptop.”

    It concluded:

    What will the laptop reveal? Time will tell. (Time is especially relevant becausethe DOJ will appeal and drag this out.)

    What might be more interesting is the FBI’s complete records on Seth Rich. The FBI has fought production of those records – first by failing to “find” its own documents, and now by alleging documents must be withheld due to “national security grounds” and the “basis that disclosure of the information would threaten intelligence-gathering efforts.”

    The information in the FBI’s possession includes that which was “provided by foreign government agency authorities under an implied assurance of confidentiality.” It also may – or may not – include whether the FBI used a “code name” associated with Seth Rich. And, if FBI representations are to be believed, it also includes “details of intelligence activities, sources, and methods related to national security.”

    Unfortunately, the court won’t require the production of this information. Some questions will remain unanswered. Read the full order here.

    FORT MYERS, FL — As emergency crews worked tirelessly to rescue Floridians with the sense to stay out of Georgia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was seen on a rescue boat, paddling door to door and asking for donations to support the war effort against Russia.

    North Korea fired two ballistic missiles Thursday just hours after Vice President Kamala Harris left South Korea, where she had toured the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone which divides the peninsula.

    The Thursday launch is Pyongyang’s third in five days, continuing the nuclear-armed country’s record-breaking blitz of weapons tests this year.

    Speaking at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) earlier Thursday, Harris decried North Korea’s “brutal dictatorship, rampant human rights violations and an unlawful weapons programme that threatens peace and stability”.

    She said that the US commitment to South Korea’s defence was “ironclad”, adding the allies were “aligned” in their response to the growing threat posed by the North’s weapons programmes.

    Seoul and Washington want “a complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula” — but in the interim they are “ready to address any contingency”, she said.

    At an observation post atop a steep hill overlooking North Korea, Harris peered through bulky binoculars as US and South Korean soldiers pointed out features, including defences, in the area.

    Otherwise you get powdered rice, dust, and foreign bits inside.
