Filly brought a picture of a tanuki in a comment and since I never heard of it, I went searching. This information is from TREEHUGGER.COM.
The tanuki is a wild canid species native to Japan that is related to wolves, foxes, and domestic dogs. It’s also known as the Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) and is a subspecies of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) that’s found in mainland Asia.
With its thick fur, masked face, and curious nature, the tanuki has served as a cultural icon in Japanese folklore for centuries. The bushy-tailed animal is known as a mischievous trickster that’s shown up in legends and myths as a shapeshifter with supernatural abilities. In popular culture, tanuki can be spotted in Nintendo video games and Studio Ghibli films.
Here are eight little-known facts about this fascinating canid species.
Tanuki Are Not Related to Raccoons
Despite their masked appearance, tanuki are not close relatives of the common raccoon, the famous species native to the United States. Tanuki belong to the Canidae family, alongside wolves and foxes. In contrast, the common raccoon shares more in common with mustelids, a family that includes weasels, badgers, and otters. Their similar appearance could be a case of convergent evolution, where different species evolve to occupy the same ecological niche.
They Can Climb Trees
Tree-climbing isn’t a skill often associated with dogs, and in fact, tanuki and the North American gray fox are the only canid species that exhibit this trait. They are accomplished climbers thanks to their curved claws and can be found foraging for berries and fruit among the branches. In addition, their natural habitat is woodlands and marshes, and tanuki are skilled swimmers that will dive underwater to hunt and forage.
They Are Bred and Killed in the Fur Trade
Both the tanuki and its mainland raccoon dog cousin are bred in captivity for the global fur trade. In some instances, their fur has been found in garments that were advertised as containing faux fur. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 70% of the faux fur garments they analyzed contained raccoon dog fur. Most of the animals killed and sold for their fur are bred in captivity and spend their entire lives in cages. Even when clothing is advertised as animal-free faux fur, it could be a false statement, and it’s worth knowing how to check for yourself.
They’re Considered an Invasive Species in Europe
Originally introduced into Russia to bolster the trapping trade in the early 20th century, the tanuki has spread into all of Europe, where it’s considered an invasive species that is threatening biodiversity.1 With few natural predators and an affinity for scavenging near humans, the tanuki population has exploded. Many European nations have started programs to hunt and trap the animal and banned its trade as an exotic pet.
They Are Highly Social Creatures
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/__opt__aboutcom__coeus__resources__content_migration__mnn__images__2016__01__tanukifamily-4ec424557e9349fcaa411c10ee3c5e6d.jpg)
Companionship and family are important for these critters, which usually live in monogamous pairs or small, close-knit groups. In winter, a mating pair will share a den and raise a litter of pups together. Male tanuki have been observed taking part in family life in ways that other species seem like poor parents. They bring food to their pregnant mates and help to raise their pups, who live alongside them for four to five months after birth.
They Are the Only Canines That Hibernate
While wolves, foxes, and other canines have no trouble braving the snowy, barren winter months, tanuki prefer to wait them out and hunker down. In early winter, they will gain weight, decrease their metabolism by 25% to 50%, and settle inside their burrows until warmer weather arrives. They don’t go it alone either. These sociable animals are communal hibernators that prefer to spend the long winter in close proximity to their mating partner, though by definition they actually enter a state of torpor rather than hibernation because they remain semi-conscious and will emerge to forage on especially warm days.
They Hold an Important Position in Japanese Folklore
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/__opt__aboutcom__coeus__resources__content_migration__mnn__images__2016__01__tanukiinsnow-503c9cf48fd64409889fb84ee6b4cb5f.jpg)
The version of tanuki often referred to in Japanese folklore is a mystical creature known as bake-danuki, which can be translated as “monster raccoon dog.” The creature was first referenced in a text published in 720 A.D. called “Nihon Shoki,” which is one of the oldest Japanese history books, weaving important historical events with mythology and creation stories. Tanuki have since been a recurring figure in folk tales throughout Japanese history, usually appearing as a trickster, shapeshifter, or a sign of good luck. The mythical version of the animal is often depicted with an oversized scrotum, which has been the source of both comedy and confusion. One theory is that this depiction dates to the 19th century when metal workers wrapped gold in tanuki skin before hammering it into gold leaf. The strength of the tanuki’s skin was so great that, according to legend, a tiny piece of gold could be hammered thin enough to stretch across an entire room.
They Are One of the Most Ancient Canine Species
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/what-the-heck-is-a-tanuki-things-you-didnt-know-about-raccoon-dogs-4864262-ADD-FINAL-V2-4ce7ef419dae4d81bc4d7f357d89c29c.png)
The tanuki is considered a basal species, or one of the species most similar to its ancestors. Thousands of years ago, most dogs probably looked more like the tanuki than your modern domestic pet. Since tanuki do not bark—instead whining, growling, and mewling—and are more omnivorous than most other wild dogs, its ancient lineage provides insight into the diverse origins of canine species. Fossil found in the Tochigi Prefecture of Japan suggests the first tanuki appeared between 2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago during the Pleistocene era.

Good Morning All!
bad news about the truck yesterday–it needs ball joints. Hubby’s being stubborn about getting a new, or at least newer, one for more than a year, but this may open his eyes.
Temp is about 34* and it’s gray and cloudy out there.
see what today brings…

Good morning! Ouch! Kind of an expensive proposition but, then, buying a new or even used truck is probably expensive, too. My truck is making some weird noises, too, but I haven’t checked the oil recently. I plan on doing that today. Sunny but chilly this morning @ only 45. But it will warm up quickly – forecast calls for mid-to-high 80’s for a few days, then back down into the 70’s.

we use the truck mostly instead of the Jeep for going home to visit mom (more comfortable for hubby) so we put a lot of miles on it. we expected something like this eventually.

Biden FBI secretly set up Trump to be indicted after he leaves office, Arctic Frost memos suggest
This is a very long article, with lots more information.
They wanted to prosecute Trump for contesting the 2020 election. I don’t believe for a second that they thought there was any real criminality or law-breaking on Trump’s part. They just wanted to take him down. It’s appalling that they planned to pursue it even after he would no longer be in office.

BREAKING:
The US State Department just said something that no government has ever said out loud before.
They called it what it is:
Replacement migration.
The UN built migration corridors into the US and Europe.
Staffed both ends of the Mediterranean route.
Handed out maps to migrants heading to the US border.
Then condemned every country that tried to stop it.
The US just refused to participate in the UNs new plan for migration: Global Compact Migration.
And INSTEAD they will facilitate remigration.
NOT replacement migration.
Now look at Canada.
Carney signed the Global Compact.

4 million temporary residents.

This went smooth under my radar – a long time coming…
May 8th — Poul Thorsen, former CDC scientist and lead author of the foundational 2003 NEJM paper used for two decades to “disprove” the MMR-autism link, was extradited from Germany and arraigned in Atlanta on two counts of wire fraud and nine counts of money laundering; he’s being held without bail as a flight risk.He wrote fraudulent ‘research studies’ and kept a handsome cut of the grant money for his trouble… he should be hung for the research fraud, imo.
{ https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndga/pr/autism-researcher-extradited-germany-face-federal-charges-stealing-cdc-grant-money }
“… According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: From 2000 to 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, awarded over $11 million to two governmental agencies in Denmark to study the relationship between autism and exposure to vaccines, between cerebral palsy and infection during pregnancy, and between childhood development and fetal alcohol exposure.
In 2002, Thorsen, who had worked as a visiting scientist at the CDC when it was soliciting the grant applications, became responsible for administering the research money awarded by the CDC.
Thorsen allegedly stole more than $1 million of the CDC grant money by submitting fraudulent documents to the Danish government, Aarhus University, and a Danish hospital where scientists performed research under the grant.
From February 2004 through June 2008, Thorsen allegedly submitted over a dozen fraudulent invoices, containing the forged signature of a CDC laboratory section chief, that falsely claimed a CDC laboratory had performed work and was owed grant money. Based on these invoices, Aarhus University transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to CDC Federal Credit Union accounts the university believed belonged to the CDC.
In truth, the credit union accounts were personal accounts held by Thorsen. After the money was transferred, Thorsen allegedly withdrew the fraudulent proceeds for his own use, obtaining cashier’s checks and buying a home in Atlanta, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and Audi and Honda vehicles.
A federal magistrate judge issued an arrest warrant after a grand jury in Atlanta indicted Thorsen on April 13, 2011, but Thorsen evaded apprehension for nearly 14 years by remaining in Denmark.
On June 4, 2025, Thorsen, 65, was arrested in Passau, Germany, pursuant to an INTERPOL Red Notice based on the April 2011 arrest warrant.

Just The News: “Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is promising to continue pursuing accountability against Dr. Anthony Fauci, with a hearing scheduled on Wednesday featuring testimony from a “COVID cover-up” whistleblower.
The statute of limitations expired on Monday and former President Joe Biden pardoned Fauci, which shields the former chief medical advisor to Biden from criminal referral for allegedly lying to Congress about gain-of-function research. Paul said he isn’t deterred by the expiration or Biden’s pardon.
“Today is the deadline to charge Fauci, or he walks away from one of the biggest cover-ups in American history without ever facing a jury. I have spent years building this case. I referred him to the DOJ. I forced the hearings. I grilled him under oath. The American people were lied to about the origins of COVID, gain-of-function research, and the Wuhan cover-up,” Paul said in a post on X on Monday.
In another post, he said that even if the DOJ doesn’t pursue charges, he wasn’t going to be “letting up.”
“In fact, later this week I’m holding a hearing with a whistleblower. Maybe the American people will finally get the answers they’ve been looking for,” Paul said. On Wednesday, Paul is chairing a Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs committee hearing with a whistleblower who will testify on the “COVID cover-up.”

Just The News: “FBI Director Kash Patel agreed Tuesday to take an alcohol identification test regarding his alleged use after he participated in a heated exchange with Maryland Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen.
The exchange occurred during a hearing in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where Van Hollen raised concern regarding reports that Patel allegedly engages in excessive drinking to a level that it concerns people in the bureau. Patel has denied the reports.
Van Hollen urged the director to take the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, which is used to detect hazardous or harmful alcohol consumption, but Patel claimed he would only take the test if Van Hollen takes it with him. “I’ll take any test you’re willing to,” Patel told the senator. “Let’s go. Side by side.”
The exchange comes after a story by the Atlantic raised questions about Patel’s sobriety, citing sources who claimed the director has been so intoxicated before that his staff had to force their way into his home.
“I really don’t care about your personal life, so long as you are able to perform your public and official responsibilities, which are awesome responsibilities,” Van Hollen said. “When your private actions make it impossible for you to perform your public duties, we have a big problem. You cannot perform those public duties if you’re incapacitated.”
Patel claimed the reports of his drinking are “unequivocally, categorically false,” and accused the senator of drinking margaritas while on an official trip last year to El Salvador, which Van Hollen has denied. “The only person who was slinging margaritas in El Salvador on the taxpayer dollar with a convicted gang banging rapist was you,” Patel said.
The FBI director has since sued the Atlantic over its reporting.”

“DNI Tulsi Gabbard probes US funding to more than 120 biolabs abroad”
By Josh Christenson, Published May 11, 2026
EXCERPT: “WASHINGTON — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is investigating more than 120 biological laboratories abroad that were funded by US taxpayer dollars for decades, as part of an effort to end potentially risky experiments with viruses pursuant to President Trump’s executive order on so-called “gain-of-function” research.
Gabbard told The Post Monday in a statement that her team is going “to identify where these labs are, what pathogens they contain and what ‘research’ is being conducted to end dangerous gain-of-function research that threatens the health and wellbeing of the American people and the world.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the catastrophic global impact research on dangerous pathogens in biolabs can have,” the spy chief also said.
“Yet despite these obvious dangers, politicians, so-called health professionals, like Dr. Fauci, and entities within the Biden administration’s national security team lied to the American people about the existence of these US-funded and supported biolabs and threatened those who attempted to expose the truth.”
Under new guidance from Gabbard, the US Intelligence Community will review research at all US-funded biolabs, which would include facilities engaged in gain-of-function experiments that could increase the transmissibility of viruses, as well as work for defensive purposes against dangerous pathogens.
Office of the Director of National Intelligence officials noted that the foreign labs extend into more than 30 countries, and several had received funding in the past through a Department of Defense program that sought to dispose of weapons of mass destruction after the end of the Cold War.
More than 40 of the biolabs under review are located in Ukraine — and could “be at risk of compromise” due to Russia’s war, ODNI officials noted.
The research, which is part of the Defense Department’s Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) Program, is aimed at studying pathogens to prevent future outbreaks and enhancing biosecurity for the US…..”

The whistleblower also alleges the CIA “illegally monitored the computer and phone usage” of Gabbard’s investigators during the probe into the COVID-19 origins cover-up.

So I finally called his son and he gave the phone to his Dad. Sheesh! But Jerry got “balled up” with some other work and didn’t write my new # down so…..he said he’ll try to come and get it tomorrow.
It cut ok today but I expect the oil should be changed after sitting all winter, in addition to sharpening/balancing the blade and cleaning off the underside of the deck. Two masked burglars then got out of the van, running to the back room to steal product and then pouring gasoline over the counters. “Massachusetts prosecutors scolded a judge over the sweetheart deal she handed to serial criminal Tyler Brown – who is accused of opening fire on random drivers on Monday – after he was convicted of trying to kill a cop years earlier.
Brown, 46, pleaded guilty to armed assault with intent to murder in 2021, one year after he fired 13 rounds at Boston officers, including firing a .40 Glock semi-automatic at close range at one officer’s chest.
Prosecutors recommended a 12-year prison sentence followed by five years of probation; however, Judge Janet Sanders handed out a five- to six-year sentence with three years of probation – despite the fact that Brown was already on probation for a 2014 assault conviction at the time.

“China Claims the US are Responsible for Covid”
Clandestine, May 13, 2026
“Flashback to 3/24/2022: Chinese MIL agree with Russian MIL assessment, that the US were developing bioweapons at CIA/USAID black site biolabs in Ukraine, including bat coronaviruses. If you think Trump, Putin, and Xi, have not discussed this topic, you are mistaken.
Any peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, or any economic deals with Russia or China, are going to include some sort of resolution on Covid. Russia claimed Covid came from the US/Ukraine, specifically the “Democrat Party”, and Russia made clear at the UN that they will not stop until there is justice for the bioweapon development in Ukraine.
China also alleged that Covid came from the US, and was planted at Wuhan to obscure the true origin, and frankly, I think there might be some truth to that.
Now I’m not saying the CCP are innocent in the matter. I have no idea to which degree they are involved, but we know for absolute certain that Fauci and the Deep State were involved, and they attempted to cover all of it up. There is a possibility that China were the patsies in all this, and they were framed for Covid.
So what’s my point? This topic isn’t going away. All three of Trump, Putin, and Xi, want justice for Covid, and the trail leads back to Obama, Biden, Clinton, Soros, Fauci, and Ukraine.
The world must cross this bridge eventually.”

Just The News: “CIA employee James Erdman testified Wednesday to a Senate panel that Dr. Anthony Fauci improperly influenced intelligence reports on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to downplay findings that it most likely resulted from a lab leak in China.
Erdman’s testimony comes after the statute of limitations for prosecution expired Monday and former President Joe Biden also pardoned Fauci, which shielded the former chief medical advisor to Biden from criminal referral for allegedly lying to Congress about gain-of-function research.
Erdman claimed Fauci intentionally participated in the “cover-up” of the COVID-19 origins, stating that he personally provided “a conflicted list of curated subject matter experts, public health officials and scientists” to the US Intelligence Community, according to the New York Post.
“Analytic managers responsible for examining the origin of COVID made decisions inconsistent with the conclusions of subject matter experts and analytical tradecraft, consistently favoring the theory of zoonosis or natural origin,” Erdman said.
Erdman also testified that Fauci, who served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, directly inserted himself into IC deliberations about the outbreak of COVID-19 twice. The first time was on Feb. 3, 2020, and again on June 4, 2021, in order to push the “natural origin” narrative.
Erdman’s testimony comes after he was subpoenaed by the Senate Homeland Security Committee.”

“People think it’s weird when Floridians keep drinks in a cooler 24/7 like it’s a permanent household appliance. It’s not a party setup. It’s survival. Because by July, opening your car door feels like stepping into a crockpot with seatbelts. The garage is 97°. The driveway is melting flip-flops. And the walk from the house to the mailbox already counts as light cardio.
So you do what Florida does best – you establish cooling stations.
• That cooler by the patio? Emergency hydration unit
• That beach cooler in the garage? Secondary reserve
• That random bag of ice from Publix? Strategic infrastructure
Water. Sweet tea. Sports drinks. Soda. Half the neighborhood’s beverages are floating around in ice somewhere because nobody trusts room temperature in this state. And somehow – someone is STILL outside grilling. Humidity at 98%. Thunderstorm forming three feet away. Mosquitoes operating with military coordination. Flip-flops on. Talking about “Honestly… at least it’s not August yet.”
Real Florida efficiency is sprinting outside during a thunderstorm to grab a drink from the cooler before the rain turns sideways and a palm frond hits your fence. Because in Florida, summer isn’t just a season – it’s a fully operational outdoor sauna with lizards.”
