Today is Kurt Russel’s birthday (born in 1951) and I found this article about interesting facts about Kurt on Mental Floss.

Kurt Russell originally had his sights set on being a professional baseball player.

On March 17, 1951, Kurt Russell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, to parents Bing and Louise Russell, but grew up in Thousand Oaks, California. He took heavy inspiration from his father, himself an actor and later owner of a minor league baseball team, the Portland Mavericks. In addition to acting in family films for The Walt Disney Company like 1969’s The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and 1975’s The Strongest Man in the World, Russell was also pursuing a career in professional baseball. In 1971, he joined the Bend Rainbows and later played for his father’s Mavericks. When a shoulder injury halted his athletic ambitions in 1973, he began focusing on acting full-time. The news was not broken to him so gently. Remembering the doctor who told him his shoulder would end his baseball career, Russell remembered him asking, “Aren’t you also an actor?” When Russell said he was, the doctor said, “Well, you’re an actor all the time now.”

Kurt Russell passed up a chance to be in Star Wars to do a television Western.

When George Lucas was casting Star Wars in 1975, he saw a number of actors, including Russell, who auditioned for both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Russell was interested in the film, but later said that he was also being offered a role on a television Western called The Quest around the same time and asked Lucas if he could make a decision about whether he wanted Russell in the movie—and if so, in which part. “I don’t know which part I prefer you in,” Russell recalled Lucas as saying. “I don’t know if I like you as Han and this guy as Skywalker, or this guy as Han and you as Skywalker. I don’t know.” When Lucas couldn’t give him an answer, Russell opted to do The Quest.

Kurt Russell was nominated for an Emmy for playing Elvis Presley.

Following his string of Disney films, Russell began tackling more mature roles, including the title character in the 1979 television miniseries Elvis directed by Halloween filmmaker John Carpenter. Playing Elvis Presley earned Russell an Emmy Award nomination and also marked the beginning of his working relationship with Carpenter, who cast Russell in 1981’s Escape From New York, 1995’s sequel Escape From L.A., and 1982’s The Thing, among others.

The King has followed Russell around, or vice versa. Russell had a small part in an Elvis film while as a child actor, appearing in 1963’s It Happened at the World’s Fair. In 2001, he appeared as a criminal who was also an Elvis impersonator in 3000 Miles to Graceland. Most notably, he agreed to dub over an actor playing Presley in 1994’s Forrest Gump as a favor to Robert Zemeckis, who directed Russell in 1980’s Used Cars.

Bull Durham was written for Kurt Russell.

If you’ve ever wondered why a former baseball player like Russell never made a baseball movie, he came close. Writer and director Ron Shelton wrote 1988’s Bull Durham, about an aging slugger named Crash Davis, specifically for Russell. The studio, however, insisted that Shelton cast Kevin Costner instead.

Kurt Russell was paid twice his going rate for Stargate because he was considered impossible to dislike.

It’s often been said of Russell that he possesses an inherent likeability. Perhaps audiences won’t like every film he appears in, but they like the actor himself. According to Russell, that was once backed by research. Recalling that the producers of 1994’s science-fiction movie Stargate offered him twice his going rate to secure his services, he cited audience satisfaction as the reason why. “They said, ‘Oh, well, we ran a questionnaire around the world,’” Russell told GQ in 2016. “They wanted to rate actors on their unlikeability. They wanted to find someone who was likeable because the part, as written, was not. And they said, ‘You know the only star out there who has zero unlikeability?’ ‘Kurt Russell.’ Zero unlikeability!” Russell added that the research was done a long time ago and “that number may have changed significantly.”

Kurt Russell may have stealth-directed Tombstone.

In 1993’s Tombstone, Russell plays a world-weary Wyatt Earp attempting to bring order to the lawless town of Tombstone. Directed by George P. Cosmatos, the film has become a classic of the Western genre. According to an interview with Russell in True West magazine in 2006, it was he, not Cosmatos, who did most of the heavy lifting behind the scenes. After screenwriter Kevin Jarre was let go from directing, producers asked Russell if he wanted to direct it. He did, but he didn’t want to put his name on it. Instead, he said, he gave Cosmatos a shot list every night for the following day’s shooting, an arrangement that Cosmatos agreed to and apparently had with Sylvester Stallone on 1985’s Rambo: First Blood Part II. Russell later criticized the True West interview, saying that he preferred not to discuss what went on with Tombstone in a public forum. “I told [George] that if the studio heads talked to me and the producers talked to me about what took place on Tombstone in terms of George’s involvement, in confidence I would tell them the private and real truth,” he told The San Diego Reader in 2016. “Publicly, I have no interest in tainting anything about Tombstone. The credits are what the credits are, and I will leave it at that.”

Kurt Russell once reported a UFO sighting while flying an airplane.

Russell is an aviation buff who has his pilot’s license. While flying his plane with Oliver Hudson (Goldie Hawn’s son, who Russell raised and considers his own son) in 1997, he reported a strange event. “I was flying Oliver to go see his girlfriend, and we were on approach,” Russell told the BBC. “I saw six lights over the airport in absolute uniform in a V shape. Oliver said to me—I was just looking at him, I was coming in, we’re maybe a half-mile out—and Oliver said, ‘Pa, what are those lights?’ Then I kind of came out of my reverie and I said, ‘I don’t know what they are. He said, ‘Are we OK here?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna call in,’ and I reported it.” The lights soon became known as the Phoenix Lights, which were witnessed by several people. Russell didn’t make his sighting public until 2017.

Kurt Russell is not crazy about an Escape From New York remake.

Talks have been ongoing for a remake of Escape From New York, the 1981 film that put Russell on the map as a viable action hero. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2017, Russell was asked how he felt about someone else playing Snake Plissken. “I didn’t play Snake Plissken,” Russell said. “I created him!” Asked if he would do a cameo or play a supporting role, he was more succinct. “F**k that! I am Snake Plissken!”

    well Mother Nature is off her meds again. we got 3 inches of snow overnight. That might be normal for us in March most years, but not after hitting 68* yesterday afternoon…sheesh!

  5. Just The News: “Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday that the Israel Defense Forces killed top Iranian security official Ali Larijani and Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s all-volunteer Basij force, in an overnight strike.

    “Larijani and the Basij commander were eliminated last night and have joined Khamenei, the head of the annihilation program, along with all those eliminated from the axis of evil in the depths of hell,” Katz said in a statement, The Associated Press reported.

    Iranian state media did not immediately confirm the two deaths, but said that a message from Larijani’s office would be published shortly. Larijani was appointed to advise the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on strategy in nuclear talks with the Trump administration.

    The Treasury Department in January sanctioned Larijani as the Iranian government violently suppressed nationwide protests. The department identified Larijani as being “responsible for coordinating the response to the protests on behalf of the supreme leader of Iran.”

    “Larijani was one of the first Iranian leaders to call for violence in response to the legitimate demands of the Iranian people,” the Treasury Department said at the time. The violent crackdown of the nationwide protests in January saw thousands killed and tens of thousands detained.

    Without acknowledging the Israeli claim of his death, Larijani’s office published a handwritten letter in Farsi that it said he wrote on behalf of the crew killed aboard the IRIS Dena, the Iranian frigate that a U.S. submarine sank in the war.”

    That memo, heavily redacted and quietly declassified by the Biden administration two years after it was written, has escaped most public notice.

    That means six years later that the U.S. intelligence community has yet to fully inform the American people or the Congress on the breadth of evidence it possesses of China’s actions, how Beijing got the data, and what operations it has taken or contemplated. 

    The gap in public knowledge is particularly politically sensitive as the Senate this week debates a new election security bill that is a top priority for President Donald Trump. Officials told Just the News that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe are working to declassify a potentially explosive tranche of documents showing what China did, and who in U.S. government knew and when.

    The secrecy surrounding China’s access to voter registration has been so persistent that even Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters, President Donald Trump’s point man for the 2026 mid-term elections, said he was unaware of the intelligence. “What’s crazy is the fact that China has access to these voter rolls, but we don’t,” Gruters told John Solomon Reports podcast in an episode set to air Tuesday.

    Current and former U.S. officials told Just the News that U.S. intelligence agencies possess several raw reports dating to spring 2020 showing China gained access to American voter registration data spanning several states as well as a few finished intelligence products referring to such breaches, including at least one presidential daily briefing. 

    But the single passage in the DNI document declassified by the Biden administration is the sole piece of evidence in the public sphere…..”

    In a letter this month, Senator Jim Banks, R-Ind., who sits on the Armed Services Committee, asked the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to revise its guidelines to exclude any prospective pilots from “foreign adversary nations” from studying in American flight schools. 

    On 9/11, Mohamed Atta, an Egyptian citizen, was the pilot who flew American Airlines flight number 11 into the Trade Center’s North Tower. Marwan Alshehhi, a citizen of the United Arab Emirates, crashed United Airlines flight number 35 into the South Tower. Both took lessons at Huffman Aviation International, a small flight training school in Venice, Florida.

    Calls to update the Flight Training Security Program

    “While TSA currently assesses risk based on immigration records, terror watchlists, and criminal history, the scale of the threat posed by the CCP and other foreign adversaries clearly warrants consideration as an additional factor,” Banks wrote. 

    “Therefore, I respectfully request that TSA update the Flight Training Security Program to preclude individuals from foreign adversary nations, such as China, from attending flight training schools in the United States,” he added.

    The exact number of Chinese flight students, called cadets, currently enrolled in U.S. flight schools is not known. However, Aeroguard, one such flight school in Phoenix, Arizona, reportedly hosts 360 Chinese students out of the school’s total capacity of 500, according to China Daily……”

Just The News: “President Donald Trump said Monday that he has asked China to delay his official trip to the country by a month amid an ongoing conflict in the Middle East that he feels requires him to stay in the United States. Israel and the United States waged a conflict against Iran last month in an effort to stop the country from developing a nuclear weapon. Approximately 200 American servicemembers have been wounded in the conflict and 13 have died.

    Trump reiterated during a White House event that he would “love to” go to China, “but because of the war, I want to be here. I have to be here, I feel.”

    “We’ve requested that we delay it a month or so,” he continued. “And I’m looking forward to being with [Chinese President Xi Jinping].”

    The request means that the trip would likely take place at the end of April or in early May. The push also comes as the president presses China to help the U.S. reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which would hopefully bring down oil prices.

    Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian has confirmed China and the U.S. are “maintaining communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China,” but did not indicate whether the country agreed to push the trip, per CBS News.”

  12. EXCERPT: “Senate Majority Leader John Thune is determined to continue missing opportunities, but wants you to know that it’s not his fault. In the latest scene of this farce, last week Thune swore that he would bring the SAVE Act to the Senate floor for a vote (like he already promised to do at the end of February) … but, since he doesn’t have 60 votes, he would be “very, very surprised” if it passed.

    The word “saboteur” comes to mind.

    The Republicans could easily end the “zombie” filibuster — a piece of Senate paraphernalia of no nostalgic or traditional importance — by lowering cloture (the procedure to end debate and actually vote on a bill) from 60 to a simple 51 majority with Vice President Vance ready to break any ties.

    But it’s even easier than that. Several weeks ago, in Human Events, Connie Hair (Rep. Louie Gohmert’s chief of staff for more than ten years) wrote concerning the Senate misheva over SAVE:

    The Senate’s Standing Rules have been dissected ad nauseam since the House took S.1383, a bill already passed by the Senate, gutted its text, replaced it entirely with the SAVE America Act, and returned it as a privileged message. That procedural posture matters. There is no need to “nuke” the filibuster lowering the cloture threshold from 60 votes to 51 to call up the bill (emphasis mine). Under the Senate’s existing rules, the message can be called up for debate. After the two-speech rule is exhausted or there is no one left wishing to speak, the bill is voted up or down by simple majority.

    In other words, the Senate leadership could bring up and pass the SAVE Act whenever it wanted. Not doing that reveals much more than Thune wants to publicly admit. As Hair says, “If Sen. Thune files for cloture anyway to resurrect a 60-vote hurdle, he is conceding that the Senate doesn’t intend to consider this bill. It’s a facade to cloak killing the bill while claiming they held the promised vote.”

    Why is this important, besides the fact that 84 percent of Americans — Republican, Democrat, white, black, Hispanic — want the same basic election integrity protections already in place in the UK, Mexico and Canada? Because Senate leadership wants us to repeat one of the greatest mistakes of ancient Rome…..”

    The shocking claim was described to The Post by two intelligence community officials and a third person close to the White House. All three sources say the implausible-sounding allegation is viewed as credible by US spy agencies, rather than false information intended to undermine Khamenei, 56, who was selected to replace his dead father as supreme leader on March 8.

    Two of the sources said the intelligence indicated that Mojtaba, who earned the nickname “the power behind the robes” while serving as his aging dad’s gatekeeper, has had a long-term sexual relationship with his childhood tutor. The third source said the intelligence indicated the affair was with a person who formerly worked for the Khamenei family.

    Mojtaba, who is believed to have been wounded in the same Feb. 28 airstrike that killed his father and other members of his family, has made “aggressive” sexual overtures to men caring for him, possibly while under the influence of heavy medication, one of The Post’s sources said.

    US spy agencies do not have photographic evidence of Mojtaba Khamenei’s alleged sexual attraction to men, but the sources insisted the tip is solid, with one saying it was “derived from one of the most protected sources that the government has.”

    “The fact that this was elevated to the highest of high levels shows you there’s some confidence in this,” added a second source.

    Mojtaba’s purported sexual orientation had been whispered about inside Iran since at least the May 2024 helicopter crash that killed then-President Ebrahim Raisi, Ali Khamenei’s presumed favorite to be the next supreme leader, sources said. Within the US government, “it’s been a pretty closely held piece of information,” one insider said.

    Trump previously dismissed Mojtaba Khamenei as a “lightweight” and an “unacceptable” choice to run Iran. The new supreme leader is widely considered to be someone who would not bend to US demands to abandon the nuclear and ballistic missile programs that prompted Operation Epic Fury….”

    The United States has been informed by most of our NATO “Allies” that they don’t want to get involved with our Military Operation against the Terrorist Regime of Iran, in the Middle East, this, despite the fact that almost every Country strongly agreed with what we are doing, and that Iran cannot, in any way, shape, or form, be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon. I am not surprised by their action, however, because I always considered NATO, where we spend Hundreds of Billions of Dollars per year protecting these same Countries, to be a one way street — We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, in particular, in a time of need. Fortunately, we have decimated Iran’s Military — Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti-Aircraft and Radar is gone and perhaps, most importantly, their Leaders, at virtually every level, are gone, never to threaten us, our Middle Eastern Allies, or the World, again! Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer “need,” or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance — WE NEVER DID! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the World, WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.     gonna go out in a little bit to shovel the rest of the snow off the deck while we have some sun. hubby says bitter cold tonight and that will make that snow harder to get tomorrow.

      A senior administration official tells FOX, Joe Kent was:

      -a known leaker and he was cut out of POTUS intelligence briefings months ago.

      -the WH told DNI Tulsi Gabbard he should be fired for suspected leaks but she never did.

      -he has not been part of any Iran planning discussions or briefings at all.

      People are saying that Kent was clearly one of Tucker Carlson’s sources in the government, given his multiple appearances on Tucker’s show. Good riddance scumbag.
