Meet The Donut Dollies, The Unsung Women Who Gave Out Sweet Treats On The Front Lines

Inspired by a simple idea from female volunteers in 1917, the work of the Donut Dollies spanned decades and helped boost the morale of American soldiers during World War II and beyond.
Throughout history, the roles that American women have played during times of war have often been overlooked and misunderstood. The Donut Dollies are no different. As a group of female Red Cross volunteers, the Donut Dollies officially began traveling with American soldiers during World War II. On a surface level, their roles seemed simple: provide wholesome entertainment and a “taste” of home to the young men fighting for their country.
But the Donut Dollies had so much more to offer than just sweet treats.
Who Were The Donut Dollies?

After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Red Cross quickly mobilized to supply aid to wounded soldiers as needed. One aspect of this aid was maintaining troop morale. Enter the Donut Dollies. Though the history of female wartime volunteers “who fried donuts and dodged bombs” actually dates back as far back as 1917, this practice was far more casual and relaxed during World War I.
By World War II, the American Red Cross sought out a very exclusive group of women to be Donut Dollies. Experts say the standards for these female volunteers were even higher than the standards of the actual military. These women were required to be at least 25 years old, college-educated, and able to provide recommendation letters and pass physical exams. Oh, and they also needed to have an “outstanding personality.”
Only one out of six applicants made the final cut.
Once a new Donut Dollie was officially accepted, she would receive immunizations, get fitted for Red Cross uniforms, and undergo several weeks of basic training in the history, policies, and procedures of both the Red Cross and the U.S. Army. She also received a very specific dress code on how to wear her uniform — no earrings, hair ornaments, “brilliant nail polish” or “excessive use of cosmetics.”
After a Donut Dollie completed her training, she was sent overseas, where she would often operate a “Clubmobile,” which was basically a mobile army clubhouse that was able to travel directly to soldiers stationed at faraway bases or camps in the field. These single-decker green buses were outfitted with the equipment Donut Dollies needed to make fresh donuts right on the spot for hungry troops.
The Donut Dollies Of World War II

During World War II, the Doughnut Corporation of America loaned 468 donut machines to the Red Cross. Each machine could yield about 48 dozen donuts per hour. Yet as the war raged on, the machines proved to be inefficient at keeping up with the high demand for the fried treats. One volunteer, Clara Schannep Jensen, wrote in a letter to her family back home: “The day before yesterday we spent the whole day making doughnuts. They were pretty good, too.”
Eventually, the Red Cross was forced to open up a handful of centralized bakeries in order to keep the Clubmobiles stocked. According to one report from late 1944, a total of 205 women had served well over 4.6 million donuts to soldiers in Great Britain. As Jensen noted in another letter to her family: “[I] have quite a responsible job and am quite thrilled that they felt I could handle it.”
In addition to donuts, the Clubmobiles were also stocked with cigarettes, magazines, chewing gum, and newspapers that provided an additional sense of normalcy for all of the homesick soldiers. To make up for the fact that those in the field were unable to visit more permanent recreation clubs in cities such as London, the buses were also equipped with speakers in order to play music out loud. The back portions of the Clubmobiles could also open up into makeshift lounges, fitted with seats where soldiers could sit and talk amongst themselves and perhaps even flirt with the beautiful young women who made the donuts.
The Donut Dollies Of Vietnam And Korea

After World War II, Donut Dollies offered their services during the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well. A total of 899 Donut Dollies served in South Korea from 1953 to 1973. “Everywhere we went, we took donuts, fresh baked daily by Korean bakers, for the troops,” said volunteer Patricia Lorge. “This was, no doubt, meant to bring a little bit of home to the troops.” She added, “We went to the troops; we visited small, isolated locations, where they didn’t have a chance to go anywhere or relax.” Meanwhile, 627 women served as Donut Dollies in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973. During the Vietnam War, however, the focus began to shift from donuts to recreational activities.
“We really did not make donuts and deliver them to the field in Vietnam,” volunteer Debby MacSwain said. “In fact, I only saw one donut during my year-long deployment. It was given to me by an Army Sergeant and I ate it!” But even though the Donut Dollies stopped making their namesake pastries, they were certainly no less busy than they were before. They provided a wide range of entertainment, including sing-a-longs, ping pong, and pool tournaments. They were ready to serve up smiles — even when they didn’t feel like smiling themselves.
The Challenges And Dangers

“As ‘Donut Dollies’ our job was to lift the guys’ spirits,” said Jeanne Christie, who volunteered during the Vietnam War. “That was easier said than done. We brought a little bit of home with us, we’d listen to them. We’d play games and records at the base rec centers.” However, she acknowledges that the experience was far from perfect. “It wasn’t easy being a Donut Dollie,” Christie admitted. “Some people thought we were just there to tease men. We were wrong, or bad, because we were over there. If you got pregnant, it was your fault, you asked for it.”
That was certainly a lot of pressure, especially since according to the book Beyond Combat: Women and Gender in the Vietnam War Era, the Donut Dollies were expected to be “nonsexual symbols of purity and goodness.” Add that to the pressure of trying to help fearful soldiers while feeling fearful of their own safety. After all, three young women had their lives cut short during their time serving the war effort overseas in Vietnam.
Hannah E. Crews died in a Jeep accident, Virginia E. Kirsch was killed by a U.S. soldier who was high on drugs, and Lucinda Richter died from a degenerative nerve disease known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
While Vietnam volunteer Linda Sullivan Schulte was lucky enough to avoid any serious issues overseas, she explained, “We all had incidents like getting gassed, watching occasional rockets come into the base, and sniper fire.” While the number of men who lost their lives on the battlefront far outnumbered the women, the Donut Dollies also showed tremendous courage and selflessness during times of vast national uncertainty.
Their Legacy Today
While donuts are a quintessential American culinary experience, the Donut Dollies are also an American phenomenon — full of phenomenal women. Inspired by a simple idea from female volunteers during World War I, the work of the Donut Dollies spanned decades thanks to the tenacity and kindness of American women. So they surely deserve recognition for their work in the same way that troops do. While nurses treated the physical injuries, Donut Dollies tended to psychological wounds. Long before the vocabulary surrounding PTSD came to be widely accepted, the Donut Dollies were there to listen, there to support, and there to try to understand. While they may not have brandished guns or crawled through the trenches, these women held the line on the emotional battlefield.

50* and no rain in sight again. the deer were IN the pond yesterday trying to get some water–it’s that bad. the fish and the frogs had them jumping about in there–it was comical. No letter back from Mom yet–but it was a postal holiday Monday so I’m hoping that’s the reason and NOT that my brother moved her again.

Good morning, Pat! SMH – with a brother like that, who needs enemies??!!?? I wouldn’t mind sending you some rain, if I could. It’s predicted again today but supposedly not until later. I’m planning on getting my lawn mowed as soon as it warms up a bit from the current 49. If UPS doesn’t get here before I mow, I’ll leave a note on the front door so he doesn’t leave w/o the batteries I’m returning to Amazon.

We still have about a dozen hummers…still lining up on the railing in the morning.
I couldn’t find any lap desks at walmarts last night but i did see a clipboard. we have those at home, and maybe that might work for her. it’s light, she can clip her paper to it and write her cards or letters on that.

Well, a real desk she could actually sit at would be preferable, I’m guessing, but with limited room…..I’m sure you could find a suitable lap desk on-line.

a real desk is out of the question in her tiny half room space. plus, with her walker is would be cumbersome. I see them on amazon, but i wanted to actually lift one to see if she could handle it–i’m thinking it could rest beside her chair when she wasn’t using it and then she could just pull it on her lap when she wanted to use it But her arms aren’t as strong as they once were so i really need to feel the weight and see the size myself.

You could make one – with handles so she could pick it up. Even make it washable, so she could take the board and pillow out. Make pockets with velcro flap closures for pen, pencil, cards, stamps, etc. :8->

Just The News: “The Trump administration on Wednesday night formally asked the United States Supreme Court to take up President Donald Trump’s tariffs case and make an expedited ruling on the matter.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit last week determined that Trump lacked the authority to impose tariffs, but placed the decision on hold to give the administration time to appeal.
Trump teased the request on Tuesday, stating he was asking the high court to allow an “early admittance” and fast ruling on the case, which centers on whether tariffs he imposed on U.S. trading partners were legal. The Appeals Court ruled that Congress had the power to impose tariffs and not the president.
“We’re going to be going to the Supreme [Court], … we think tomorrow, because we need an early decision,” Trump said Tuesday. “I mean, look [at] the financial fabric of our country. We’re a rich, incredible country right now, and we’re able to, you know, other countries use tariffs on us for years, and we never did.”
Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked the Supreme Court to decide whether it will review the case by Sept. 10, and then schedule oral arguments for the first week of November if it does decide to get involved, the New York Times reported. The Appeals Court has stayed its ruling and will allow the tariffs to remain in effect until Oct. 14, to give the Supreme Court time to review the case.”

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “In recent days, you might have experienced a sensation while reading the political internet or watching cable news that makes you ask yourself, “Are Democrats really into this, or is it fake?” That feeling was likely caused by coming across or directly consuming copium.
Copium is any narrative or event that Democrats seize on to help numb their sore parts and cope with their sad reality. Over the course of the past two weeks, copium came in the form of Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desperate social media activity and was then followed by a dose of hopeful rumors that President Trump had either died or was otherwise severely ill.
Both storylines were hyped up by the dying news media, which are just as dependent on copium as the average sad Democrat who can’t get over the 2024 election. After all, they’re effectively one and the same.
With the Newsom copium, the media were hard at work convincing their audiences at CNN and the New York Times that the governor’s corny tweets imitating the president’s voice were comedic gold knocking Trump back on his heels. Newsom was, according to CNN, “owning the MAGAs.”
Anyone not addicted to copium knew that something was off. The tweets weren’t funny or incisive so much as just another exhausted Trump impersonation intending to signal a Democrat’s opposition. But when you depend on such a substance, you have to convince yourself that it’s great.
The death rumor copium was much darker, but just as dumb — online influencers and professional conspiratorialists looked at a sparse White House holiday weekend public schedule and, paired with photos of a bruise, determined the president had died or fallen deathly sick. To understand how potent this particular variant of the sedative was, consider that Stephen Colbert had to quiet his own audience after it booed his acknowledgement that Trump was, in fact, still alive.
The entire affair was driven by internet obsessives who juice social media algorithms with hysterical conspiracy talk, publishing dozens of posts raising suspicions and rumors, usually because they can make money from it. But just as in Trump’s first term, the gross speculation didn’t stay in the world wide web’s sewers; it made its way into the New York Times, where author Katie Rogers on Tuesday both legitimized and trivialized the subject under the headline, “President Trump Is Alive. The Internet Was Convinced Otherwise.”
“Mr. Trump’s critics have speculated about his health for as long as he has been in national politics,” wrote Rogers. “And for his part, he has long declined to explain when and why he has sought out medical care, whether he was suffering from Covid or undergoing routine procedures. But there had never been a conspiracy wave as feverish as this one.” Then she consulted medical professionals and Trump’s public medical history to give the copium a veneer of journalistic integrity.
This wasn’t a matter of curiosity in the public interest. If a president’s barren schedule on a weekend — a holiday weekend, no less — were a national security imperative, Joe Biden would have been dogged for public health updates by the minute for all four years of his term. That didn’t happen, and not because he didn’t deserve it.
Copium isn’t necessarily a partisan drug. But the supply Democrats are using of late is something very stupid and highly toxic.”

“And I just couldn’t believe they would do something like that. I mean, I knew they were pretty ruthless, but this seemed even bad for them.”
Rich said what motivated him to take action was seeing videos of local citizens being approached by armed agents trying to perform “destructive” testing on their properties to determine if it should be condemned and then seized for the power plant project.
“They come rolling up on [an] old lady’s farm about 10 cars deep, and out of the cars come out men wearing bullet-proof vests, loaded weapons, demanding access to her property because they want to come on her land, do destructive testing, then, no doubt, condemn her land and give her 10 cents on the dollar and tell her to take a hike,” Rich said.
“When I saw that video, I could, first of all as just as an American, I could not believe things like this were actually taking place in modern-day America, stepping all over her Fourth Amendment rights, total disregard for her autonomy, or her or her land that had been in her family,” the country singer added.
As public pressure mounted, and Rich’s campaign to highlight the plight of the locals through a series of interviews he posted to social media, TVA officials wanted to meet with the country singer to work out an arrangement, Rich said.
Singer-songwriter Rich gave them an ultimatum
When they showed up at his Nashville home, he delivered an ultimatum—“You got two weeks to get out of Cheatham County. And if you don’t, I’m going to write a song that compares you guys to the devil himself, and I’m going to have millions of Americans singing along,” he said……”

Hell’s bells! I wanted to mow today and expected to have enough time before the clouds & rain moved in. I was just getting prepared when I looked out and saw the cloud cover had already gotten here….SMH. Well, at least I don’t have to leave a note for the UPS pick-up person now…..and it’s still chilly at 60 so….I’ll wait for one of the upcoming 80 degree days, I guess, and the grass isn’t that long yet anyway.

Tunisian officials said they would “take all measures to preserve the rights of the deceased, his family, and their justice,” while also working to repatriate Dhibi’s body.
Speaking of his family, Marseille’s public prosecutor revealed on Wednesday that Dhibi had a long history of violence, addiction, and psychiatric troubles. As reported by Le Parisien, prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said Dhibi had been addicted to cocaine and alcohol, suffered from psychiatric disorders, and had been convicted in May for stabbing his nephew but remained free pending an appeal.
Accounts from his ex-wife, published by Le Figaro, painted an even grimmer picture. Sophie, 51, described Dhibi as “kind and pleasant” when they first met in 2019, but said he soon became paranoid, violent, and consumed by drug addiction. She detailed episodes of physical abuse, harassment, and threats. “I was so scared of him that I didn’t file a complaint. I thought, ‘It’s going to be worse, he’s going to kill me,’” she recalled.
She said his behavior worsened with cocaine use, paranoia, and psychiatric breakdowns. In 2023, she took him to the hospital during a crisis when he claimed to hear voices, but he left without following medical treatment. That same year, he stabbed his nephew multiple times because he suspected him of being homosexual. Sophie divorced him in 2024.
His marriage to Sophie had allowed him to remain in the country despite arriving illegally in 2018 via Italy. While initially held in multiple detention centers, he was released during the pandemic in 2020.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed that Dhibi held a French residence permit, valid until 2032, and was known to police for prior offenses, including anti-Semitic remarks made near a mosque in Sète. He was flagged for psychiatric monitoring, but had not been considered a radical Islamist threat and was not listed on any terrorism watch files.
While Tunisia insists on an investigation into what it calls an unjustified killing, French authorities emphasize that police responded to an immediate threat from a violent, unstable individual.”

Just The News: “The since-convicted FBI official who led counterintelligence efforts in New York leaked information to an affiliate of a Chinese company that was linked to Hunter Biden’s business efforts, according to a report released Thursday by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz.
Charles McGonigal, the former special-agent-in-charge of the FBI Counterintelligence Division in New York, leaked information to “Person B” – an unnamed businessman who worked for the Chinese energy conglomerate CEFC – even as the FBI was secretly investigating the Chinese company, according to the new report,
McGonigal, who was sentenced in December 2023 for money laundering related to a Russian oligarch, met with prosecutors in November 2023 and “acknowledged during the proffer interview that he shared information with Person B about the CEFC investigation and anticipated arrests arising from it.”
The DOJ watchdog said that “Person B was a consultant to foreign governments and businesses on international investments, and, in addition to his work for CEFC China, Person B was a non-governmental advisor to the Prime Minister of Albania.”
Horowitz assessed that “although the full extent of the harm from McGonigal’s leaks of sensitive investigative information to foreign subjects and targets will likely never be fully known, we determined that the impact of McGonigal’s conduct on the CEFC investigation, a significant FBI criminal investigation, was substantial.”
Hunter Biden and his associated businesses are also believed to have received $5 million or more in payments from CEFC in 2017 and 2018, and CEFC Chairman Ye Jianming’s deputy, Patrick Ho, also agreed to pay Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, a $1 million legal retainer after Ho was eventually arrested. Hunter referred to him as “the f***ing spy chief of China” in a May 11, 2018, voice recording.
Ho was sentenced to three years in prison in March 2019 for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He was deported to Hong Kong in June 2021 after serving his sentence.
“McGonigal admitted making it perfectly clear to Person B that ‘these people would be arrested’ and that Person B would be arrested, too, if he was involved. McGonigal said that he did not recall disclosing to Person B who specifically would be arrested but that he remembered discussing Ho and the CEFC China Chairman with Person B,” the DOJ watchdog wrote.
“Eventually during his proffer, McGonigal acknowledged that he told Person B and Person A that the FBI was going to arrest individuals associated with CEFC (not just that they ‘would’ arrest people who were breaking the law.)
McGonigal said that Person B told him that Ho was expected to travel (to the United States) and that McGonigal at some point told Person B that Ho would be arrested if Ho did so. McGonigal further acknowledged that Person B asked whether the chairman was going to be charged, and McGonigal told Person B that ‘there was a chance.’
According to McGonigal, he was motivated by ‘bravado’ in disclosing information to Person B about the CEFC investigation and anticipated arrests.”
McGonigal himself had been charged in January 2023 for illegally receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from an individual who had business interests in Europe and who had been an employee of a foreign intelligence service.
The disgraced FBI official was sentenced to 50 months in prison in December 2023 for conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and to commit money laundering in connection with his 2021 agreement to provide illicit services to sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.”

Still sunny, breezy and 77 now! Got the back yard mowed and also the weed eating on the inside of the east fence line….I could have switched to my bigger weed eater (since I was able to re-charge one of those batteries; the other one won’t charge) and done the outside but I’m pooped and my shoulders hurt! The 2 batteries I ordered for that one also won’t fit so I’ll have to return those, too!!! SMDH – no more trying to order stuff like this on-line – I’ll just have to go into Menards or Bomgaars!
