What Shall We Bake Today?

Today’s offering is Cinnamon Raisin Bread and this recipe makes 3 loaves!

Ingredients

1 12 cups milk

1 cup warm water (must be between 110-115 degrees)

2 (1/4 ounce) packages active dry yeast

3 eggs

12 cup white sugar

1 teaspoon salt

12 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup raisins

8 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons milk

1 cup white sugar

3 tablespoons ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions

Warm the milk in a small sauce pan on the stove until it just starts to bubble, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat.

Let cool until lukewarm, about 120-125 degrees.

Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside until yeast is frothy, about 10 minutes or so (make sure your water is at the correct temperature or the yeast won’t activate.) Then mix in eggs, sugar, butter salt and raisins (stir in the cooled milk slowly so you don’t cook the eggs.) Add the flour gradually to make a stiff dough.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes until smooth.

Place in a large, buttered, mixing bowl and turn to grease the surface of the dough.

Cover with a warm, damp cloth and let rise (I like to let my bread rise in the oven with the light on. It has just the right amount of heat and keeps the bread out of drafts.) Allow to rise until doubled, usually about 1 1/2 hours.

Roll out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle 1/2 inch thick.

Moisten the dough with 2 tablespoons milk and rub all over the dough with your hands.

Mix together 1 cup of sugar and 3 tablespoons cinnamon and sprinkle mixture evenly on top of the moistened dough.

Roll up tightly (the long way).

The roll should be about 3 inches in diameter.

Cut into thirds, and tuck under ends and pinch bottom together.

Place loaves into well greased (you can use Crisco or butter for this) 9 x 5 inch pans and lightly grease tops of loaves.

Let rise in warm place, uncovered, again for about an hour.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until loaves are lightly browned and sound hollow when tapped.

Remove from oven and let cool on rack.

Take melted butter and spread over tops of loaves.

After about 20 minutes, lay loaves on their sides and remove from pans.

Allow to cool before slicing.

    cold here this morning!

    the bird feeder will be coming in soon for good. we have a flock of red headed house wrens and other wrens that would sit at the feeder all day if we let them blocking every other bird from getting to the seeds. the other types of birds take their seed and leave…these wrens just sitting there taking up all the space. sigh…

    1. Morning, Pat! Cold here this morning @ 36 but clear skies at least, and not windy. You need more feeders! If you put one up with a cage to keep the big birds out, that will keep the smaller wrens/finches/sparrows, etc. busy. I have just the 2 seed feeders – the caged one (similar to the one below) and the WP block. Soon, I’ll be putting out the jelly feeder.

    I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful.

    My daughter and her family visited for Easter and my granddaughter just turned 16. I recruited her to help me.
    I finally found a distance he could not overcome between the table with the feeder and the arm of the chair. However, he found that he could climb the wire from under the deck to the satellite dish to access the deck railing on the side of the deck to eat the peanuts i leave for the bluejays. (the bluejays chased him several times.)
    But my daughter thought “Chippy” was adorable and wanted to take him home with them–BECAUSE every year they have to fish 3-4 dead chipmunks that fall into their in ground pool and this guy could replace one of those. SIGH
    (It’s a 4 hour ride home, but she sincerely tried to catch it.)
    Fortunately they were planning a trip to the Finger Lakes for the day and we were taking my granddaughter out shopping for her birthday. So once they left, we gave it a good chipmunk hockey try to scare it off for good. I had the broom, she took the shovel and we trapped it under the loveseat. it was frantic and we thought we were teaching it a lesson.
    In a bold move to escape, it ran right towards my granddaughter (who btw plays GOALIE on her high school team) and she freaked out and it ran thru her legs.
    Sigh
    However, nature helped us out. out in the yard where he was scrambling to get away? a hawk was waiting. swooped down from the pine tree and flew off with it. We didn’t tell my daughter when they got back from the Lakes. Just marveled that it hadn’t been back since.

  6. Just the News: “A federal judge has denied the Associated Press’s request for the courts to further direct the White House to restore the news outlet’s access to President Donald Trump and certain spaces. The decision was made Friday by U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden.

    The judge issued an injunction earlier this month stating the White House was not allowed to limit access to the president over disagreements regarding the outlet’s refusal to comply with Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Washington Examiner.

    Although that injunction went into effect on April 14, the White House announced changes to the presidential press pool the following day that effectively continued to limit the AP’s access by eliminating the wire service’s spot altogether. 

    However, after hearing arguments from the outlet and the Justice Department on Friday, McFadden disagreed with the AP’s position that the administration’s latest policy, which eliminates a permanent slot for all wire services but makes them eligible for selection as part of the pool’s daily print journalist rotation, violated the terms of his injunction, The Examiner also reported. 

    The judge said the White House reserves the right to set such policies as long as they don’t discriminate against a particular outlet.”

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “After losing the election in November, the Democrats devised a game plan to stop the implementation of President Donald Trump’s agenda. Since Democrats no longer controlled Congress or the White House, they decided to focus on the judiciary.

    Consequently, 23 Democrat Attorney Generals decided to meet daily for “a  thirty-minute confidential video chat to coordinate their plans for pushing back against the Trump administration.” The coordinated resistance was joined by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and other left-wing organizations. The result has been unprecedented success in the federal courts.

    For Democratic Party resistance, it helps that President Joe Biden appointed 228 judges to the federal courts, the most for a four-year period since the administration of President Jimmy Carter. Overall, 60% of active federal district court judges have been appointed by Democrat Presidents. Thus, it has been easy for opponents of  Trump’s agenda to find sympathetic judges. Of the 30 judges who have either partially or fully blocked Trump executive actions, 26 have been appointed by a Democrat President.

    The most infamous case involved Judge James Boasberg, a federal district court judge appointed by President Barack Obama, who “issued a temporary restraining order halting the Trump administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans that the White House insists are part of a gang.”

    Sadly, President Trump was given another judicial setback last weekend at the Supreme Court level. His administration’s plan to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan gang members was “paused” by the Supreme Court, which had previously issued a “narrow and focused” decision lifting the order from Judge Boasberg blocking the deportations.

    In its latest decision, the Supreme Court directed the Trump administration “not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court.” The “putative class” refers to individuals the Trump administration claims are members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

    The ruling was issued late at night in response to a hurried appeal filed by the ACLU on behalf of the suspected Venezuelan gang members. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas strongly opposed the 7-2 decision.

    Along with battling Trump in the courts, Democrats are continuing to count on their friends in the media to provide sympathetic coverage of their activities. On Sunday, multiple networks featured the ridiculous U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) who travelled to El Salvador to have a highly publicized lunch, including margaritas, with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a suspected MS-13 gang member who previously was living in his state.

    Other Democrats want to visit Abrego Garcia and advocate for his release. This strategy is part of the Democratic Party’s plan to oppose the Trump administration on every issue, including popular ones like deporting illegal aliens.

    CNN Data Analyst Harry Enten recently delivered the unwelcome news for Democrats. He noted that 56% of Americans are in favor of deporting “every” illegal immigrant in the country.  What is significant about this finding is that Americans want all illegal immigrants removed from the country, not just foreign gang members.

    This is a substantial change from previous polls. In 2016, Enten noted that only 38% of Americans wanted to deport all illegal immigrants. He said, “The American people have come a long way on this issue, much closer to Donald Trump, and I think that’s a big part of the reason why Americans are increasingly saying the country is on the right track when it comes to immigration policy.”

    As Democrats continue to advocate for suspected foreign gang members, claiming that their “rights” are being denied, most Americans are not supporting this radical agenda. Enten showed that in December of 2024, the last month of Biden’s disastrous presidency, only 14% of Americans said the country was on the “right track.” Today, 45% of Americans feel the country is on the “right track” under President Trump.

    While there is plenty for this administration to address in the months ahead to undo the horrendous policies of Joe Biden, the President has already made tremendous progress on the crucial issue of border security. Illegal crossings at the United States/Mexican border dropped to only 7,000 in March, a decrease of 94% from the previous year. According to the New York Post, this is the lowest level in at least “25 years” and if illegal crossings continue to stay at “these levels,” the country will “hit a low not seen since 1968.”

    Despite this stunning success, the Democrats continue to hysterically oppose President Trump across the board. Unfortunately for Democrats, their protests last weekend did not reach the levels of participation that was anticipated. In addition, the party is fractured with some elements supporting a more radical agenda, while others hope for some moderation.

    In the meantime, President Trump and his administration continue to move forward, dealing with the strident and multifaceted opposition, but knowing that their agenda has the backing of most Americans.”

    “Israel Considering ‘Limited Strike’ on Iran”

    Israel is considering a “limited strike” on Iran’s nuclear facilities in the coming months, despite Washington’s refusal to support military action, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The deliberations come as the second round of US-Iran negotiations have concluded in Rome, with expert-level talks expected to continue on April 26 in Oman.

    According to Reuters, Israeli officials are weighing a “limited strike” that would require minimal US support – unlike the larger and prolonged bombing campaign previously under consideration.

    West Jerusalem reportedly presented Washington with several strike options, “including some with late spring and summer timelines.” A senior Israeli official told the outlet that no final decision had been made.

    On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that US President Donald Trump had rejected an Israeli proposal for “extensive” strikes, opting instead to pursue diplomacy.

    “I’m not in a rush to do it, because I think that Iran has a chance to have a great country and to live happily without death, and I’d like to see that. That’s my first option,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. – RT

    Our Take: Well, it appears to be happening: The rift forming inside the Trump administration between the private sector businessmen and the Establishment Republicans is fueling uncertainty regarding the Iran situation, with the group of business businessmen seeking peace while Establishment Republicans are seeking war – and potentially subverting President Trump in the process.

    Another Barak Ravid article from last week details who falls on which side, crediting Vice President Vance as the leader of the businessman group which includes Steve Witkoff, Pete Hegseth, and Tucker Carlson (but also Adam Boehler). The group of NeoCons lives up to its name, including Mike Waltz, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, and Tom Cotton, and they have thrown their full weight behind Netanyahu.

    More interesting signal from Ravid’s article is the tension spun out from Netanyahu’s troubled meeting with Trump at the White House.

    As I said last week, the Israeli government will not tolerate Iran running any sort of a nuclear program, including a civil power plant. Not only is this position asinine, but it would require a true moral degenerate to carry it out.

    So now that Trump and Witkoff have sued for peace with Iran, we are suddenly hit with a new narrative that Bibi is considering a strike on Iran, independent of Trump and the West.

    If only Trump had an upcoming opportunity to meet publicly with the other most powerful man in the world (Vladimir Putin,) in a setting where the host country had considerable influence, and was well-positioned in the region to help mitigate a potentially larger war – somebody like Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

    Trump and Putin together, standing side-by-side on stage is a political reckoning that I doubt we’ve ever witnessed before. Will it be enough to stop Netanyahu? – GhostofBasedPatrickHenry

  11. “El Salvador’s President Offers Maduro US-Deported Venezuelans for Prisoner Swap”

    Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has proposed a prisoner exchange with Venezuela, offering to repatriate hundreds of Venezuelans who were deported from the United States in exchange for “political prisoners.”

    In a post on X, Bukele offered to exchange 252 Venezuelans currently detained in El Salvador’s mega prison for “an identical number (252) of the thousands of political prisoners” he says Venezuela holds, including family members of opposition leaders.

    “Unlike our detainees, many of whom have committed murder, others have committed rape, and some have even been arrested multiple times before being deported, your political prisoners have committed no crime,” Bukele said in the post, which was directed at Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro. “The only reason they are imprisoned is because they opposed you and your electoral fraud.”

    The US and El Salvador say most of the deportees locked up in El Salvador’s Cecot prison are members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and some are members of the MS-13 Salvadoran gang. – CNN

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Earlier this month, 17-year-old high school student Austin Metcalf was stabbed to death at a track meet in Frisco, Texas. Metcalf died in his twin brother’s arms. As an educator who lives just down the road, I know too well how our system failed to keep Metcalf out of harm’s way.

    Karmelo Anthony, also 17, has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing. They had never met before the track meet, according to a witness. Anthony brought a knife to the track meet and sat under another team’s tent. When asked to move, he reportedly refused and became aggressive. Metcalf stepped in to ask him to move again, to which Anthony responded, “Make me move,” according to Metcalf’s twin, who watched the events. Then Austin Metcalf grabbed Anthony’s backpack and Anthony stabbed him in the chest, his brother said.

    Some have tried to make this about race — Metcalf was white, Anthony was black. But let’s not make this about race. This is about human decency and the culture that has eroded it.

    A dangerous mindset has won over many young men today. It tells them that nothing really matters — burn it all down and take what you can. It demands respect while offering none in return. It scoffs at authority, mocks standards, and justifies any action that serves one’s immediate desires. I have seen this mindset spread in my years working at a relatively well-off suburban high school down the road from Metcalf’s school. Countless examples come to mind.

    No Consequences

    Students today know they can get away with almost anything. Last year, a 16-year-old student-athlete pushed me, cursed me out, and walked out of class. A few days later, I sat across from him in the assistant principal’s office. The assistant principal gave him candy and spoke to him like he was an upset eight-year-old. His father tried to blame me for the altercation. After a half-hearted apology, the young man was allowed to return to class without a disciplinary referral.

    This has been standard protocol in education for more than a decade. Play on your phone all class and teachers will just keep pleading with you to put it away. Get caught cheating on a test and the teacher will just make you take a new one. And if a teacher asks you to stop in the hall because you are violating a policy, you can just keep walking while shouting profanities. 

    Education is full of good people who try to hold the line but, overwhelmingly, this culture of excuse making and second chances reigns. Dangerous students remain in classrooms. Administrators hope for the best, while enforcing no real standards for the rest. Those who want to cause chaos will, and their peers will celebrate them for it.

    For every dangerous student who should be kicked off campus, there are hundreds of misguided students who just need to know where the line is. The student who pushed me and cursed me out would have never done so in a world where he knew he wouldn’t get away with it. Likewise, millions of students might pay attention and do their work if they truly believed they could fail.

    But the prevailing educational paradigm would rather perpetuate the delusion that you can reach every student with a bit of understanding, support, and a good conversation.

    Alternatives to a Failing Approach

    I have recently passed the administrator certification test for my state. The practice test in the preparation manual asks a question about how a new principal should handle the high number of suspensions on his campus. Of the responses offered, the correct answer is:

    B. Shifting the focus of discipline from punishment and exclusion to practices that build students’ ability to reflect, accept accountability, and take action to change.

    This sort of answer sounds great and even mentions accountability, but in reality, it promotes the exact opposite. The manual goes on to explain:

    Option B is correct because the positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) method, which is described, places a high value on the engagement of the student and is shown to be effective in reducing disciplinary referrals among all students, especially African American and Hispanic males.

    Note that the explanation justifies the superiority of PBIS by claiming this approach reduces referrals. It most certainly does. Any campus that embraces such an approach will also go out of their way not to make referrals. Because consequences don’t work, right?

    But they do. My district had seen an increase in violent fights going viral, with students performing for the camera. Finally, they instituted a no-tolerance policy: if you fight, you are automatically sent to the District Alternative Education Program. Your sports season is over, and you are removed from campus. Overnight, the fights virtually ceased. This is the answer. Schools cannot continue prioritizing convenience and optics over discipline and order.

    Yet, more often, schools refuse to enforce discipline. Instead, we invest in weapon detection technology and turn teachers into Transportation Security Administration agents at the doors each morning while allowing blatant disrespect and disorder to flourish inside. We lower expectations, excuse bad behavior, and pretend that endless second chances build character. But they don’t. They breed entitlement and, in the worst cases, violence.

    A culture that refuses to enforce consequences is a culture that enables tragedy. Austin Metcalf did not die because of a lack of security protocols. He died because adults failed to hold the line long before he met Karmelo Anthony.”

DACA, painted by Obama and his fellow leftists as “a pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants transported to the United States as children, was in fact a sweeping and deliberate act by the Democrat-led executive branch to circumvent existing immigration laws. Obama’s “Dreamers” policies were ultimately followed by an invasion of millions of illegal aliens that poured into the United States in the border-crushing Biden years.

The Democrats and federal courts considered those moves a matter of executive discretion.

Why can’t the next president use his discretion to take those people and remove them,” O’Connor, author of Postgate: How The Washington Post Betrayed Deep Throat, Covered Up Watergate, and Began Today’s Partisan Advocacy Journalism. The activist courts, O’Connor asserts, have created rights for illegal immigrants that don’t necessarily exist — often based on the duration of their illegal stay. 

    Federal courts ruling against Trump effectively are saying an executive can’t undo those rights through the same executive process his predecessors used.  “There’s something wrong with that,” O’Connor said. “That’s a tremendous bias in favor of what I would say is rogue action by an executive.”

    “So the executive, in this case Trump, that is really trying to enforce the law and make sure we have an orderly immigration process, he’s now hamstrung because the courts are now sort of expanding the whole notion of due process and what rights (are granted to illegal aliens),” the former assistant U.S. attorney for Northern California, added. ‘Enough is Enough’

    The Republican-controlled House is trying to check what members like Onder believe to be a constitutional crisis created by an overreaching judiciary. Earlier this month, the House on a party-line vote passed the No Rogue Rulings Act of 2025 (NORRA) aimed at limiting the use of national injunctions. The bill, now before the Senate Judiciary Committee, basically bars U.S. district courts from issuing injunctive relief orders unless they apply to specific parties bringing a complaint. 

    Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., the bill’s author, said activist federal judges on a daily basis are abusing their Article III powers, defying the Constitution and blocking Trump’s “executive authority to deport criminal illegal immigrants, reduce wasteful government spending, and strengthen our military.” 

    “Today, a majority of the House of Representatives declared that enough is enough,” Issa said in a press release following the vote. Not a single Democrat voted for the bill. 

    “If you don’t like the injunctions, don’t do illegal, unconstitutional stuff. That is simple,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said in voting against the No Rogue Rulings Act. The far-left congresswoman has an interesting take on “unconstitutional stuff.” She, of course, cheered on Biden’s frequent skirting of congressional authority and the Constitution.

    ‘Injunctions as a Weapon’

    Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who introduced the Republican-led Senate’s version of the bill seeking to restrain nationwide injunctions, recently noted that both sides of the aisle have had trouble with consistency on the judicial issue. 

    “Most of us in this room have at various times supported or opposed universal injunctions. My fellow Republicans and I sometimes like them when there’s a Democratic president, and my Democratic colleagues probably like them right now, even though they criticized them a few months ago under President Biden,” Grassley said. “We all have to agree to give up universal injunctions as a weapon against policies we disagree with,” Grassley added. 

    But the left’s resistance movement against its duly elected political nemesis has infected the federal courts, undercutting the majority of voters who voted for Trump and his agenda. A majority of Americans remain with Trump on immigration, according to the latest Echelon Insights poll…..”

  18. Alrighty then….I won’t have to worry about running out of inhalers any time soon! I got 3 inhalers each of 2 different types in the mail from the VA. Also some nasal sprays for the polyps in my sinuses. I’m good to go for a while now. Those should last me for many months since I don’t need to use them often. TBH, it is a relief to be back on-track with the VA.

      In an appalling security breach, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was robbed by a masked man in a DC restaurant.
      Kristi Noem has Secret Service protection but a masked man was able to snatch her purse while she dined at a restaurant on Sunday night.
      The thief took off with Noem’s purse which included $3,000 in cash, her passport, DHS badge and other valuables.

      The Secret Service is investigating the incident.

      “The Secret Service, which provides security for Noem, reviewed security camera footage at the restaurant and saw an unknown white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant, a law enforcement source said,” CNN reported.
      “The thief got away with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash,” CNN reported.

    The record-breaking total, disclosed by Trump’s presidential inaugural committee in a filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Sunday, surpassed the record sum of nearly $107 million Trump raised for his 2017 inauguration. The massive amount raised by Trump’s presidential inaugural committee is more than double the amount former President Joe Biden raised when he raked in nearly $62 million for his inauguration in 2021, which was scaled back due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The largest contribution to the inaugural committee was a $5 million donation from American food and poultry company Pilgrim’s Pride, according to the FEC filing. Several major technology companies contributed to the president’s inauguration fund, including California-based chipmaker Nvidia, which donated $1 million, the FEC filing shows. Nvidia refers to itself as a “World Leader in Artificial Intelligence Computing.”

    Other technology giants, including Amazon and Meta, previously announced that they were planning to donate $1 million to Trump’s 2025 inauguration fund.

    An anonymous source close to Trump’s fundraising previously told CNN that excess donations from Trump’s inaugural fund are expected to be directed toward his future presidential library. Notably, a variety of major businesses alongside foreign countries have pledged to invest more in the U.S. over the next several years following Trump’s 2024 election victory.

    The Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee could not immediately be reached for comment.”

    The Supreme Court temporarily halted the Trump administration’s efforts to use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport members of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) early Saturday morning, saying detainees needed to have a chance to challenge their deportations. Turley said the high court was being forced into an “increasingly improvisational” approach by the sheer number of emergency cases.

    “What Justice Alito is objecting to is that this is becoming increasingly improvisational,” Turley told “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream. “You have covered the Supreme Court for years, as I have, and we rarely see this level of number of emergency cases going in front of the Supreme Court. And a lot of them are half-baked in the sense that they simply don’t have the normal details, the record that you have. And the justices are expressing their frustration.”

  25. Just The News: “Nadine Menendez, the wife of former New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, was convicted on Monday of accepting bribes as part of a years-long corruption scheme.

    The senator was convicted for his role in the scheme last year, on all 16 felony counts of obstruction of justice, bribery, extortion, wire fraud and acting as a foreign agent. 

    Nadine Menendez was indicted for her role in September 2023, but her trial was delayed because of her breast cancer treatments. The verdict comes after seven hours of jury deliberations, which took place over two days, according to the New York Times.

    The case centered on allegations that the pair accepted bribes in exchange for acting to benefit the governments in Egypt and Qatar when Bob Menendez was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Menendez resigned as the chairman when he was indicted, and later resigned as senator after conviction.”

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “On Friday, the story of an American citizen being held by immigration officials for ten days burst into the political sphere. It was the perfect storm for the press, who were salivating over the opportunity to turn one of the Trump administration’s best polling issues into a liability. 

    As the original reporting went, Jose Hermosillo was wrongfully arrested in Albuquerque, NM, and held for over a week despite telling ICE officials that he was an American. It wasn’t until his family showed up with a birth certificate and a Social Security card that he was released. 

    On its face, this seemed like a pretty big flub by federal officials. After all, no one should want a government that can mistakenly arrest you and hold you for ten days without any evidence that you’re an illegal alien. There’s just one problem, though. Hermosillo not only told immigration officials he crossed the border illegally, but he also signed a statement swearing that as well. 

    That sound you hear is the sound of a thousand narratives burning to the ground.

    This is why it’s always smart to wait for more details before jumping on a story that sounds too good to be true, politically speaking. Democrats and those generally skeptical of Trump’s increased immigration enforcement thought they had the holy grail here. Finally, ICE had rashly and unconstitutionally scooped up a U.S. citizen and violated their rights for over a week. It was the talking point they wanted. 

    Except it turns out that Hermosillo not only told immigration authorities he wasn’t an American citizen, but he even concocted an entire story about crossing the border illegally to find work in the United States. Why did he do that? I have no idea. Maybe he’s got mental issues. Maybe he was doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing and thought posing as an illegal immigrant was the better option. 

    Whatever the reason, given what we’ve learned, it seems patently absurd to continue to blame ICE and the administration for this when this guy left them no choice by lying to them. Were they supposed to ascertain his real history through some sort of telepathy? 

    Look, I’m highly skeptical of federal power, even when a Republican is president. I think that’s healthy, and we should never convince ourselves that overreach is okay as long as it benefits our side in the short term. There’s enough evidence of how badly that goes when your opposition retakes power to maintain some boundaries. That was not the issue with Hermosillo being detained, though. If I go up to the cops and tell them I murdered someone and then sign a statement to that effect, they are going to detain me until they figure out what’s going on. That’s what happened here, and it is not the fault of ICE or CBP that they were lied to. 

    And that brings us to the obvious question, given how odd this situation is. Was this a setup?”

  28. Just The News: “House Oversight Chairman James Comer on Monday referred former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution, after he allegedly made false statements to Congress.

    The referral accuses Cuomo of purposely lying to Congress about his handling of the COVID-19 nursing home scandal in his state. The former governor, who led the state during the pandemic, issued a mandate in 2020 that required nursing homes in the state to admit untested or possibly contagious patients. It allegedly resulted in the deaths of over 15,000 people. 

    The recommendation also comes after the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic sent a referral to the Justice Department over the same allegations last year. “Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress during the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the COVID-19 nursing home tragedy in New York,” Comer said in a statement on Monday. 

    “This wasn’t a slip-up—it was a calculated cover-up by a man seeking to shield himself from responsibility for the devastating loss of life in New York’s nursing homes,” he continued. “Let’s be clear: lying to Congress is a federal crime. Mr. Cuomo must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

    The recommendation specifically refers to a New York State Department of Health report that Cuomo claimed he had not reviewed. However, the House investigation alleges that the former governor “reviewed, edited, and even drafted portions” of the report. 

    Cuomo has denied the allegations that he intentionally lied to Congress about the nursing home controversy, and the former governor’s spokesperson previously stated that the New Yorker testified that he did not remember having a role in the report.

    Criminal referrals do not carry any legal weight, and it is now up to Attorney General Pam Bondi as to whether the DOJ prosecutes.”
