It’s All About the Benjamins!

Today is Ben Franklin’s birthday ( born in 1706) so I decided to search for things we might not know about the $100 bill on which Franklin appears.  This article from gobankingrates.com does just that!

From gobankingrates.com:

You probably know the $100 bill is the largest note currently produced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. You’re also likely aware of which Founding Father is on the $100 bill — politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin. There’s a lot more history behind this bill, however.

The $100 bill is more than just a way to pay for bigger purchases — it contains a great deal of fascinating American history. Take a few minutes to discover these interesting facts about your money.

It’s the Highest-Circulated Bill

The $100 bill is the most circulated form of U.S. currency. As of Dec. 31, 2022, there were 18.5 billion Benjamins currently in circulation, according to the Federal Reserve Bank. The $1 bill is second with 14.3 billion, followed by the $20 bill with 11.5 billion. In 2017, there were only 12.7 billion $100 notes in circulation.

It’s the Second-Most Printed Currency …

The Federal Reserve gave approval to print up to 8.7 billion currency notes in 2023. Nearly 1.5 billion of them will be $100 bills, second only to the $1 denomination.

… But Most $100 Bills Aren’t in America

Our $100 bills are very popular internationally. In 2018, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago issued a paper that estimated that as many as 80% of the $100s in circulation were being held outside the country. The report attributed that to “economic and political instability” abroad.

The International Popularity Benefits the Economy

Thanks to that, up to 80% of the $100 bills being circulated reside overseas. They act almost like an interest-free loan for the economy since most of that currency won’t return stateside.

It Costs 8.6 Cents to Produce

Every $100 bill comes with a production cost of 8.6 cents, according to the Federal Reserve. Print costs cover essentials such as paper, ink, labor and overhead costs to print. The $100 bill is the most expensive U.S. currency to print because of its security features. Printing cost of a $1 bill is just 2.8 cents each. The $100 bill includes components such as a 3-D security ribbon that changes from bells to 100s when moved, and a bell that seems to appear and disappear within the inkwell.

The First $100 Bill Was Printed in 1914

Even though the first $100 “Interest-Bearing Notes” were issued in 1861, the first $100 Federal Reserve Notes — aka money as it’s currently known — were printed with Benjamin Franklin gracing the front, just like it is today.

Benjamin Franklin Has Been on It for Over 100 Years

Although many people think there is a $100 bill with a president’s face, the truth is that Benjamin Franklin’s face graces this note — and has since 1914. Since then, the currency has gone through several re-issues, but it has remained the Benjamin Franklin $100 bill.

The Franklin Association Is Uncertain

If you’re like many Americans, you might be wondering, “Why is Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill?” After all, he was never president like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. The truth is, there’s a lack of credible information for the reason his portrait graces the currency. It likely has something to do with Franklin being one of the Founding Fathers, alongside Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and James Monroe.

It’s Had Three Major Redesigns

The $100 has featured Benjamin Franklin since its inception over a century ago, and there have been tweaks through the years. The note has had three major redesigns to incorporate updated security features, however, coming in 1990, 1996 and 2013.

“In God We Trust” Started Appearing in 1966

The phase “In God We Trust” was adopted as the official motto of the United States back in 1956 — beating out “E Pluribus Unum” — but it wasn’t always featured prominently on currency. The first record of the phrase appearing on paper currency (the one-dollar silver certificate to be exact) was in 1957, making its debut on the $100 bill nine years later.

The 1996 $100 Bill Was the First to Get a General Seal

Before new release of the $100 in 1996, each bill contained the seal of a specific Federal Reserve Bank. In 1996, individual seals were replaced with a general seal denoting the entire Federal Reserve System.

The 2013 Version Was Two Years Late

The most recent release of the $100 bill was originally planned for 2011 but was delayed two years because of new security features that caused the notes to crease during printing. The end result was that some of the bills were filled with blank spaces.

The Ink in the New $100 Can Change Color

Your mind isn’t playing tricks on you — the newest (2013) redesign of the $100 does, in fact, change color. The lower right corner has the capability to shift between copper tones to traditional green when in the light. According to Esquire, this is thanks to the ink containing microscopic metallic flakes that reflect various wavelengths of light.

The Time on the Clock Was Changed on the New Bill

If you have an eye for detail, you might have noticed that the time on Independence Hall’s bell tower clock on the back of the old $100 bill read 4:10. It was changed to 10:30, however, on the newer ones. No one seems to know why either of these times was chosen, but both images — the north and south views — were engraved by J.C. Benzing in the 1920s. It is assumed that he took pictures of the building at different times of day, which would explain the clock discrepancy.

The Paper Is Unique

Though it might seem like it, our money isn’t printed on paper at all — at least not in the traditional sense. Whereas books and newspaper use wood pulp for their pages, Federal Reserve note paper is composed of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton, which gives it its trademark rich texture. It also has red and blue security fibers built in.

Crane & Co. Has Made the Paper Since 1879

Crane & Co., which got its start in Massachusetts, has been producing the paper for the $100 bill and all other American notes since 1879. In 1844, the company became the first to embed silk threads in banknote paper, according to its website. Crane & Co. has also created several anti-counterfeit measures, including advanced security threads, watermarks, planchettes, security fibers, special additives and fluorescent and phosphorescent elements. Spotting the fakes in distribution is a huge problem, but sometimes keeping your money away from criminals is just as hard.

It Has a Cue for the Visually Impaired

Chances are, you’ve noticed the large gold 100 on the back of the $100 bill, but it’s not a flashy design touch. The 100 was put in place to help people with visual impairments distinguish the bill from other denominations.

Benjamin Franklin’s Shoulder Is Rough to the Touch

If you’ve ever run your finger over Benjamin Franklin’s shoulder on the $100 bill, you might have noticed it’s rough to the touch on the left side. This is not a flaw unique to your particular bill; it’s actually caused by the enhanced intaglio printing process used to produce the portrait.

It Has a Longer Lifespan Than All Other American Bills

The $100 bill has an average lifespan of 15 years, according to the U.S. Currency Education Program. In comparison, the $1 bill lasts an average of 6.6 years, the $5 bill averages 4.7 years of use, the $10 bill gets 5.3 years, the $20 bill lasts 7.8 years and the $50 stays strong for about 12.2 years. The $100 bill is held more by its owners than lower-denomination bills, which pass from one hand to another frequently. Therefore, it will last longer before wearing out, per the program.

The Portrait of Ben Franklin is Off-Center

After the latest redesign of the currency in 2013, Benjamin Franklin was removed from his portrait frame and placed off to the side for the first time in the bill’s history.

There’s Two Ben Franklins (If You Look Hard Enough)

The 2013 redesign of the bill featured a plethora of new security features — one of which was a second portrait of Ben Franklin when held up to the light. The watermark of Franklin looks fuzzy, thanks to the linen content featured in American currency. If money was printed on all cotton, there wouldn’t be a bleed.

Same Building, New View

The $100 bill has long featured a depiction of Independence Hall, which is a huge factor in Franklin’s lore. The newest 2013 redesign also features a new engraving that shows the back of Independence Hall instead of the iconic front.

It Features a Top-Secret Ribbon

To improve security, the U.S. Department of Treasury rolled out new plastic ribbons as part of larger currency to help deter counterfeiting. Even though the most recent $100 bills look as though the plastic ribbon was interwoven into the very fabric of the bill, it wasn’t — according to Esquire, the bill is actually created around the ribbon itself in a top-secret process.

Be Sure to Check the Extremely Fine Print

If you check near Franklin’s collar, you’ll find an engraving present on the latest edition of the bill — and it harkens back to an original portrait painted of the Founding Father by Joseph Siffred Duplessis in the 1780s.

The 2013 Design Uses a Feather to Draw It Together

The newest redesign also features another icon that is integral to Franklin’s tale — a feather quill. The quill, along with its companion the inkwell, were drawn by artist Brian Thompson.

  1. Good morning, Pat and Filly!

I loved this opening about the Benjamins! When I first saw one of those bills, with the shiny blue metallic ribbon and gold ink, I thought it was a fake…it was so different from the usual green and gray US currency. No doubt, they had to go to extremes with the security features to beat the counterfeiters.

I’m back at the Village, and on weekend duty for Sally’s care and feeding. We are learning to cope with the new reality – and are now watching blood pressure as well as blood glucose and pulse ratings too if she is looking like she’s going into afib. So far, just 2 pain pills per 24 hours. She’s had a little bit of blood spotting, but not every day. We are still praying for GOD’s mercy and for her return to Him, to know His love for her.

We are having a cold spell – N FL winters are cycles of rain-wind-cold-warm-repeat. Weather in the 80s and down in the teens is rare, but it can happen. We get snow about once a decade.

      2. Almond Roca is also a favorite – but I never can find it.

These cookies are a great substitute:

        ALMOND ROCA COOKIE BARS

        Ingredients
nonstick cooking spray (i use bakers joy for this recipe)
        1/2 cup brown sugar
        1/2 cup granulated sugar
        1 cup unsalted butter
        1 large egg yolk
        1/2 tsp salt
        1 tsp almond extract
1 cup all-purpose flour (see note in recipe intro)
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (note: a 12oz bag has about 2 cups chips, and i usually use the entire bag for more chocolate flavor, but the original recipe called for 1 1/2 cups of chips)
        1/2 cup finely chopped almonds

        Directions
        1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 11×15-inch baking sheet (or jelly roll pan) with nonstick spray.
        2. Blend brown sugar, white sugar, butter and egg yolk until well combined. Add flour, salt and almond extract, and mix well.
        3. Add dough to baking sheet, and spread into even layer. Bake in oven for 25 minutes.
        4. Immediately after removing baking sheet from oven, spread chips overthe hot cookie base. As the chips melt, use a spatula to spread the meltedchocolate evenly over the cookies base. Sprinkle the almonds on top while chocolate is still warm and melted. Let it cool

    1. Morning, Pat! Hope it cooperates for you. I’ve found a little more info about the $100 bill:

      Benjamin Franklin on $100 bill

Benjamin Franklin is featured on the $100 bill due to his significant contributions to American history and his embodiment of core American ideals such as hard work, innovation, and self-improvement. Franklin was a Founding Father of the United States, known for his roles in science, politics, and philosophy. His portrait has been on the $100 bill since 1914, when the Federal Reserve Note version was first produced. The decision to place Franklin on the bill was made by the United States Treasury and the Federal Reserve, with Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo choosing him when the $100 Federal Reserve Note was first printed. This choice reflects a recognition of Franklin’s multifaceted legacy and his profound impact on the nation’s development.

      Independence Hall Clock Time Change

The time on Independence Hall’s bell tower clock on the back of the old $100 bill was 4:10. This changed to 2:22 on the redesigned $100 bill that came into circulation in 2013. According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, there are no records explaining why either time was chosen.

If anyone wishes to explain to others why wind and solar power are not practical energy “alternatives”, the following article does a great job of summing up the argument clearly and concisely. It’s an American Thinker article from 2017.

Here are two important paragraphs of the article:

“In the conventional electric grid, the manager of the grid instructs the generating plants when to generate electricity and how much to generate. Wind works the opposite way. When the wind is blowing, the grid is expected to accept whatever wind power is available and adjust the other generators to balance supply and demand. Wind is a bully that pushes the other generators around to suit its needs. Wind generators have this power because many states have requirements, like California, that a certain percentage of the power be renewable by certain dates. The politicians enable the wind bully. Green propaganda and the wind turbine manufacturers drive the politicians.

According to Disraeli and Mark Twain, there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. A forth type of lie, green lies, should be added. The best liar is someone who believes his own lies, and that makes green lies particularly believable. Goebbels noted that if you keep repeating a big lie enough, people will come to believe it.”

Just The News: “President Biden announced Friday that he’s commuting the sentences of nearly 2,500 non-violent drug offenders and vowed to “continue to review” additional actions related to pardons and commutations.

“Today, I am commuting the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of non-violent drug offenses who are serving disproportionately long sentences compared to the sentences they would receive today under current law, policy, and practice,” he said in a statement.

“With this action, I have now issued more individual pardons and commutations than any president in U.S. history,” he added.

Biden said this latest  action “provides relief for individuals who received lengthy sentences based on discredited distinctions between crack and powder cocaine, as well as outdated sentencing enhancements for drug crimes.”

Biden cited the Fair Sentencing Act and the First Step Act in his statement about the commutations.”

        1. i agree with this. when the current rules make sentences less for exactly the same crime, it should be almost automatic–but there can be no extenuating circumstances–like a murder or robbery in conjunction with drug charges.

This dance troupe wasn’t the only act. The televised address included 47 minutes of entertainment. Yes, almost an hour. I vacationed in Panama in 2023. Toured the canal, the capital and Bicas Del Toro. The amount of Chinese owned businesses was staggering . The Chinese employees all spoke perfect Spanish with no accent. They were prepared for the mission. China has been playing the long game!

Believe me – I know first hand that most aren’t worth the powder it would take to blow them to hell! Even back in the late ’70’s when I was there, they sucked for the most part! I talked long ago about the civilian secretary I tried to train during my last year there – it was impossible! 2 other civilian secretaries tried, too, and they threw their hands up in despair! But they simply cannot be fired!!! It is a pure waste of taxpayer dollars all around! They eventually transferred her just to get rid of her! She had seniority and could NOT be fired!

  7. Washington Post Cartoonist Arrested Over Child Porn

Darrin Bell, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist known for his work with The Washington Post, has been arrested on child pornography charges, according to an entry on the Sacramento County Jail’s website. In the listing detailing Bell’s inmate information, he is reported to have been booked on January 15, and is said to be charged with felony “possession/control of obscene matter depicting a person under 18.”

The investigation into Bell was conducted by Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children detectives (ICAC) and apparently began after a tip about 18 files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) that were uploaded to an online service, according to the outlet BNO, citing a statement by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators are said to have ultimately found a total of 134 videos linked to the same account, which was allegedly owned and controlled by Bell. A search warrant was reportedly executed at Bell’s residence, resulting in his arrest and booking into the Sacramento County Main Jail. – The Hill

Our Take: This cartoonist won a Pulitzer for his work against people who are against the grooming of children.

His work has a particular concentration that makes this entire story seem like it should have been obvious…

Deflect legitimate criticisms as bigotry… check.
    Create emotionally-charged false equivalencies… check.
Project your own conduct on others… check.

  8. Zelensky Accused of Election Interference in NATO Nation

Politicians from Poland’s opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party have accused Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky of interfering in their country’s upcoming presidential election.

The claim follows comments Zelensky made earlier this week about PiS presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki. The right-wing politician claimed last week that Kiev could have no future in the EU or NATO until it takes responsibility for the WWII Volhynia massacres. Regarded as a genocide in Poland, the mass murder spree saw up to 120,000 Poles, Jews, Roma, Armenians, including women and children killed by the nationalist Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

”If Ukraine is not in the EU and not in NATO, if there are no security guarantees for Ukraine, then Pan Nawrocki should start training, because it may turn out that he will have to take up arms,” Zelensky responded in an interview with local media during his visit to Poland on Wednesday. The remarks sparked outrage in Poland. – RT

  9. Just The News: “House Oversight Chairman James Comer on Friday called on the incoming attorney general to hold presidential brother James Biden accountable after accusing him last year of lying to Congress during his testimony in the impeachment probe into President Joe Biden.

The committee previously referred James Biden to the Justice Department last June, but the agency currently under Democratic control has not pursued any charges. Yet, President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on Monday and has nominated a new, Republican AG who may be more inclined to pursue the case.

“On December 1, 2024, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. issued a written statement announcing ‘A Full and Unconditional Pardon’ for his son, Robert Hunter Biden,” wrote Chairman Comer in a letter to AG nominee Pam Bondi.

“However, I write to remind incoming Department of Justice leadership of Hunter Biden’s main accomplice in his influence peddling schemes (aside from Joe Biden himself), whom the House Committees on Oversight, the Judiciary, and Ways and Means (the Committees) previously identified to Attorney General Merrick Garland as having misled Congress regarding Joe Biden’s participation in his family’s influence peddling and deserving of prosecution under federal law: James Biden, the President’s younger brother.”

You can read the letter below:

    2025-01-16-Letter-to-Pam-Bondi78.pdf

House Republicans referred both Hunter and James Biden to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution last June, accusing the pair of making false statements to Congress during the impeachment inquiry.

Hunter, who received an expansive pardon from his father shortly after Thanksgiving last year, cannot face any prosecution for the alleged lies. But James Biden, who has not been pardoned by his brother, could face penalties for lying to Congress, the committee says.

The committee argued that James Biden lied in his deposition when he claimed he did not meet with Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski while the group pursued a deal with CEFC China Energy, one of the Chinese companies with connections to the Chinese Communist Party at the center of the impeachment inquiry. Hunter Biden contradicted his uncle’s statements in his own testimony, claiming James Biden was present at a meeting with him and Bobulinski.”

President Joe Biden released a statement Friday declaring that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) “has become part of our Constitution.”

Biden asserted that as of 2020, 38 states have ratified the amendment and stated it should now be recognized as “the law of the land,” according to a White House press release. The amendment is meant to ensure equal rights for men and women in the U.S., but some interpretations of the text have implied it would erase gender distinctions and grant abortion protections.

“The American Bar Association (ABA) has recognized that the Equal Rights Amendment has cleared all necessary hurdles to be formally added to the Constitution as the 28th Amendment,” the White House statement reads. “I agree with the ABA and with leading legal constitutional scholars that the Equal Rights Amendment has become part of our Constitution.”

“As Archivist and Deputy Archivist of the United States, it is our responsibility to uphold the integrity of the constitutional amendment process and ensure that changes to the Constitution are carried out in accordance with the law,” Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan and Deputy Archivist William J. Bosanko said in a statement in Dec. 2024. “At this time, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) cannot be certified as part of the Constitution due to established legal, judicial, and procedural decisions.”

The National Archives informed the Daily Caller News Foundation that this remains their position and that “the underlying legal and procedural issues have not changed.”

The amendment was passed by Congress in 1972 but failed to be ratified by the required three-quarters of states within the seven-year deadline

January 20th cannot come fast enough! Everybody, even those that initially opposed a Victory by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Administration, just want it to happen. It is my obligation to protect the People of our Country but, before we even begin, we have to think of the Inauguration itself. The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., with the windchill factor, could take temperatures into severe record lows. There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country. I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way. It is dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of Law Enforcement, First Responders, Police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on the 20th (In any event, if you decide to come, dress warmly!).

Therefore, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather. The various Dignitaries and Guests will be brought into the Capitol. This will be a very beautiful experience for all, and especially for the large TV audience!

We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In.

All other events will remain the same, including the Victory Rally at Capital One Arena, on Sunday at 3 P.M. (Doors open at 1 P.M.—Please arrive early!), and all three Inaugural Balls on Monday evening.

Everyone will be safe, everyone will be happy, and we will, together, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

  16. Just talked to my Sis about William. He has some really influential people stepping up for him. His NG Commander arranged to up his insurance coverage since the hospital charges are considered to be “catastrophic” and his previous policy wouldn’t cover it. He is also really trying to convince William to go full-time with the Guard. The only thing he hasn’t trained on is the deep-water rescue.

His boss at the new job in KS has called him every single day and is still going to pay him part-time rates, as well as assuring him that the job will be there waiting for him. He had only been actually ON the job for one day but had been coming in at night for the previous 3 weeks to learn the job. THAT is the kind of guy William is!!! Two other electric companies have also offered him jobs when he gets out of jail.

And they have an outstanding lawyer lined up for him who has gotten a court date set up next week to get his bail lowered. They gave him THE highest bail available in KS!!! The attorney advised NOT doing a funding site yet since she could take half of it in the divorce. Her Dad also called Wm’s Mom and told her they have until the end of next week to get his stuff out of the house since they’ve already sold it! THIS WAS PLANNED!!! New owners take possession on 2/1.

Something else that came out: his wife lied about being at work that day! She was at home for 3-days from her job because she was COVID positive!!!

  17. “Bernie Sanders Gets SCHOOLED by Trump Nominee in Must-See Exchange: Scott Bessent obliterated Sanders with a single devastating remark.”

The Vigilant Fox, Jan 17, 2025

“Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) attempted to lecture one of Trump’s cabinet nominees about the “oligarchy” but ended up getting schooled instead.

During a tense exchange, Sanders asked Scott Bessent, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of the Treasury, “Are Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg too wealthy and powerful? Do you agree with President Biden about an oligarchy?”

Bessent replied, “Those three billionaires all made their money themselves. Mr. Musk came to this country as an immigrant.”

As his argument began to falter, Sanders interrupted, saying, “Forget how they made their money. Do you believe it’s an oligarchy?”

In a brutal response, Bessent countered with one striking statement:

“Well, I would note that President Biden gave the Presidential Medal of Freedom to two people (George Soros and David Rubenstein) who I think would qualify as his oligarchs.”

    This is a must-watch exchange:”

Remember when some whacko drove a U-Haul truck into the gates at Lafayette in DC? Unfurled a nazi flag?

    https://nypost.com/2025/01/17/us-news/nazi-loving-teen-who-crashed-u-haul-into-white-house-barrier-to-destroy-us-government-is-sentenced-to-8-years-in-prison/

FTA: “The then-teen from St. Louis, Missouri, wanted to “attack and destroy” the US government and acknowledged that the President would be killed in the process, prosecutors said in court papers, calling it a plan “as dangerous as they come.”“He wanted to eliminate the democratic process in America and replace the government with a Nazi-style dictatorship,” they wrote.”

He is actually here on a Green Card from India. He was sentenced to 8 years.

  19. OK, I’m back – quick trip this time. I got the oil-filled heater @ WM for $50 and it is now set up in the back of the house, ready to go. It was around $300 on Amazon but then, it isn’t “eco-friendly!” With the 2 quartz heaters in the front of the house and keeping the water running in the tub & sinks overnight, I should be ok if my furnace does go kaput.

It clouded up earlier but the temp was still @ 41 when I left; the wind has come up – supposed to be up to 40 MPH wind over the week-end – temp now has dropped to 38 and I brought the feeders in. They were already starting to blow around – saw a squirrel try the slinky once earlier – once was all it took and he went about his business elsewhere. Probably at Lois’ across the street – she has 2 feeders hanging near the railings of their ramp so the squirrels just go to town.

    1. sounds like a productive trip!

we will leave our kitchen sink tap run overnight for the next few nights. it’s the only one we have to watch. thankfully we now have a good couple of weeks of wood in the garage!

I put a new corn/apple block out for the deer as well.

I know i will fall asleep in the chair after supper!

      1. Well, I have to worry about the lines freezing in my crawl-space. I’ll leave it trickling in the back bathroom and here in the kitchen – hopefully, doing it at the front and the back will help. I’ve already had the sink cabinet doors standing open.

      2. I also picked up a 64 GB flash drive so I can back-up my computer just in case I have another bad crash that can’t be fixed. I didn’t think my drive had that much memory but now I see that it’s not going to be enough. I’ve got 66 GB being used right now so I’ll have to go to the next size up. Oh, well – I’ll exchange it next week. The entire dairy section was really sparse today – a lot of empty spaces.

  20. Mt. Shasta rangers in California got a gander of an unusual “climber” in distress on Christmas Eve, when they stumbled across a stranded goose that was 10,000 feet up the mountain.

Climbing Rangers Nick Meyers and Eric Falconer of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center were on patrol at the Old Ski Bowl on Dec. 24, 2024, when they spotted the freezing flyer in the snow, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

A cold and lonely spot for a goose.

While Mt. Shasta rescue teams have encounters with plenty of troubled climbers they could tell right away this was no alpine goose. It was especially poorly equipped, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest teased. It “had on only one layer of down and was neither prepared for the temperature nor overnight camping.”

“It was pretty battered. It couldn’t fly, but we still had trouble catching it,” said Meyers, “so I kind of dove on it.” The bird calmed down as Meyers held it, and stayed calm while he drove it down the mountain to the road by snowmobile.

The two men let the animal go in a pond further down the mountain. When he checked on the bird on Christmas Day, it was doing fine, Meyers said.”
