10 Facts About the Mayflower Ship
The Mayflower was the vessel that brought the first English Puritans, who are now commonly referred to as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England to the continent of North America in 1620. The voyage of the Mayflower and the people who boarded it had a crucial part in the early colonization and settlement of the Americas. The Pilgrims were looking for religious freedom and a better living when they made the journey to the New World. The ship had set sail with the intention of docking in northern Virginia; but, adverse weather conditions and mistakes in navigation caused it to instead arrive in what is now the state of Massachusetts, in the region that is now home to the city of Plymouth. The Plymouth Colony was the first successful and long-lasting English settlement in New England, and it was founded by the Pilgrims. Plymouth was in the southeastern part of the state of Massachusetts. The voyage of the Mayflower and the settlement of the New World by the Pilgrims is an important chapter in the annals of United States history, and it is commemorated annually on Thanksgiving.
Mayflower Facts
1 At about 180 tons, she was considered a smaller cargo ship
The Mayflower was considered a smaller freight ship and was not specifically constructed for ocean journeys. It was largely used to transport goods between England and Bordeaux, such as clothing and wine. It was, however, outfitted with the required rations and supplies to complete the journey across the Atlantic and was deemed capable of meeting the voyage’s demands. Despite its small size and lack of ocean crossing experience, the Mayflower successfully brought the Pilgrims to the New World.
2 The Mayflower was a popular name for ships at the time.
During the time of James I (1603-1625), there were 26 vessels carrying the name Mayflower in the Port Books of England; it is unknown why the name was so popular. To minimize confusion with the numerous other Mayflower ships, the identity of Captain Jones’ Mayflower is based on data from her home port, her tonnage (estimated 180-200 tons), and the master’s name in 1620. It is unknown when or where the Mayflower was built, though she was designated as “of London” in later documents. In the Port Books of 1609-11, she was identified as “of Harwich” in the county of Essex, which was also the birthplace of Mayflower master Christopher Jones in 1570.
3 It was intended for two ships to travel to the New World
The Mayflower set sail from London in the middle of July 1620 and proceeded downstream on the Thames to Southampton, where it met up with the Speedwell. It was intended for the two ships to travel to the New World together, with the Mayflower transporting the majority of the pilgrims to their new home and the Speedwell acting as a supply ship along the journey. However, it didn’t take long before it became clear that the Speedwell wasn’t seaworthy, so the two ships were forced to make multiple stops for repairs along the trip. In the end, it was determined that the Mayflower would be the sole vessel upon which the Pilgrims would continue their journey, while the Speedwell would sail back to England. Because of this setback, the voyage of the Pilgrims was prolonged by several weeks, and there were fewer people on the Mayflower as a result. In spite of this, the Pilgrims persisted on their voyage until they finally reached their destination in the New World. Once there, they established the Plymouth Colony and began a new life in the Americas.

4 There are no Admiralty court documents connected to the pilgrim fathers’ voyage of 1620.
There is no subsequent record that directly refers to Jones’ Mayflower after 1616 until 1624. This is remarkable for a ship trading to London because it would not normally vanish from the records for so long. There are no Admiralty court documents connected to the pilgrim fathers’ voyage of 1620, which could be due to the odd way the pilgrims were transferred from Leyden to New England, or some of the period’s records may have been lost. By 1620, Jones, together with Christopher Nichols, Robert Child, and Thomas Short, was one of the ship’s owners. In the summer of 1620, Thomas Weston chartered her from Child and Jones to embark on the Pilgrim journey. Because of his membership in the Company of Merchant Adventurers of London, Weston played an important role in the Mayflower journey, and he finally traveled to the Plymouth Colony personally.
5 A second Mayflower sailed from London in 1629.
In 1629, another ship called the Mayflower set sail from London to the Plymouth Colony. A group of settlers set out on this expedition to establish a new settlement in the New World. Unlike the Pilgrims’ famous voyage on the Mayflower in 1620, which is regarded one of the most renowned episodes in American history, this latter voyage is less well remembered. However, it was a significant event in the history of the Plymouth Colony, contributing to the settlement’s and its existence in the New World. The voyage of the Mayflower in 1629, as well as numerous comparable voyages conducted by other ships and groups of settlers, shaped the history of the United States and its formation as a nation.
6 The Mayflower was square-rigged ship with a beakhead bow.
The Mayflower was square-rigged, which implies that its masts were rigged with square sails. Square-rigged ships were popular because of their stability and capacity to withstand strong winds, making them ideal for long trips across the open ocean. The Mayflower also had a beakhead bow, which was common on many ships of the time. This bow was distinguished by a sharp, curved prow designed to cut through the water more efficiently. The Mayflower also had a high, elevated stern, which allowed the ship to carry more cargo while also protecting the crew and passengers from rough weather. These architectural elements, combined with the ship’s robust build and skilled crew, aided the Mayflower’s memorable trip across the Atlantic and safe arrival in the New World.
7 The number of crew on board was less than 50.
The Mayflower’s commanders and crew included a captain, four mates, four quartermasters, a surgeon, carpenter, cooper, cooks, boatswains, gunners, and roughly 36 men before the mast, for a total of about 50 men. The whole crew remained with the Mayflower in Plymouth during the winter of 1620-1621, and almost half of them died during that time. The surviving crewmen traveled back to England on the Mayflower on April 15, 1621.

8 In 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s landing was celebrated.
The 400th anniversary of the Mayflower arrival occurred in 2020, marking four centuries since the famed ship and its passengers arrived on the shores of what is now Massachusetts, United States. Special displays, historical reenactments, and educational programs, as well as ceremonies and other events honoring the bravery and endurance of the Pilgrims and the crew of the Mayflower, were held to commemorate the event. The Mayflower landing and the creation of the Plymouth Colony are significant events in American history because they signify the commencement of permanent English colonization in the New World as well as the birth of one of the United States’ earliest colonies. The 400th anniversary of the Mayflower landing was an opportunity to reflect on history and remember the Pilgrims and their trip to the New World.
9 The government created a Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar, with the ship depicted on the reverse and passenger William Bradford depicted on the obverse.
The United States government struck a unique commemorative coin, the Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar, to mark the 300th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival. The coin depicts the Mayflower on the reverse and a portrait of William Bradford, one of the Pilgrims’ leaders, on the obverse. The currency was issued in 1920 and extensively disseminated as a symbol of the country’s acknowledgement of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ importance in American history. The Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar is a noteworthy piece of American numismatic history, and coin collectors prize it for its historical significance and rarity. The release of this coin helped to raise attention to the Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ story, and it serves as a lasting homage to their bravery, dedication, and endurance in making the momentous voyage to the New World.
10 A replica of the Mayflower, built in 1956, can be seen at the Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The Mayflower model can be seen in the Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This replica was created in 1956 to honor the ship’s remarkable voyage and importance in early American settlement. The replica is a full-scale wooden sailing ship that was built utilizing traditional shipbuilding processes and materials to the greatest extent possible. It serves as an educational and historical resource for visitors, allowing them to learn about the Pilgrims’ and early settlers’ hardships and experiences in the New World. The replica is a renowned tourist attraction in Plymouth and a significant symbol of American history and tradition.

Morning, Pat! Does your family even know about your blog? It would be cool to “talk” to your GD on-line, like Piper. I sure will miss “seeing” you from Thanksgiving thru the week-end while your family is visiting!
Still kinda dark here, 21 again, and I can see another low line of clouds – thicker today – with clear skies above. Once we get the first measurable snow, I’ll go out and take the downspouts off. I guess Wheezer has found somewhere else to sleep and only shows up around mid-day now.

That’s kinda sad, that you can’t even truly be yourself with your own family! You have to “put on” a different persona & hide certain aspects of yourself….I had to do that thru-out my childhood and once I got free of it, I vowed never to have to do it again. Which is why I’m alone, I guess – funny that – I have to put up with THEIR personalities and accept them but that doesn’t apply to THEM.
Who knows about Wheezer but w/in 15 minutes, who shows up? Yup – showed up for breakfast today and he’s gone again.

I am not the kind of person to NOT defend my beliefs. some can merely engage in a give and take debate and walk away. i am more passionate about what i believe. so to keep the peace because my family doesn’t know when to stop either and to appease hubby whose family NEVER argued the way mine did I tend to avoid subjects we cannot agree upon.

Wow, Filly, that “be yourself” stuff really resonates. I have to hold myself in check a bit because my family can’t take too much info & intensity that I can too readily deliver. I love being with the family but get worn out with all the commotion. Hubby & I are both “space people” & our little house will get jam-packed if all of the kids & families show up simultaneously. Should be a good but tiring day.
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

We’re expecting my parents; daughter, SIL, & GD, & possibly SIL’s widowed dad; son & one of his roommates whose parents died a few years back for the meal & most for the game before hand. Oldest son, DIL, & 2 GDs plan to come later as they start w/ DIL’s widowed mom (her dad was a covid shot kill). Our special needs son, wife, & FIL Might swing by at some point but he hasn’t spent Thanksgiving w/ his wife’s family since their marriage 2 years ago so hopefully he’ll be able to be fully present with them for a change…we’ll see.
Our living room is 12′ X 15′ (but functions like 12 x 12 with a hallway & piano in one section) & it stagger feeds into the dining room that is maybe 10′ X 10′ & we have one of those Amish leaf tables that can expand to seat 10-12 Very Tightly, sardine can style LOL. We might have a card table in the middle of the LR or in the Basement as backup…
Hubby tore out a wall he’d installed to create a separate bedroom for one of our twins many years ago & has been frantically tweaking this basement area for the last couple weeks. It now has about 10′ X 15′ but half of the “walls” are hanging fabric outdoor scenes sort of obscuring the laundry on one side, one of our pantry shelve units on the corner, & the fridge & chest freezer opposite the laundry. He had to saw off the bottom of his workshop door so it could close over the rug he got so with the door closed the wall appears extended. He painted the side of the adjacent fridge (the ugly old one that came with the house) so the granddaughters can play with magnets there (something they’ve really enjoyed at my parents’ cottage). He even got a pretty large TV & hung it from the ceiling so people can watch the game down there or put on some kids’ movies. All of these costs are counting as our Christmas presents to each other LOL
We’ll still be all on top of each other even if spread out between those rooms LOL Lots of chaos AND lots of Love! ❤

Judge rejects 2nd Amendment argument from illegal immigrant living in Ohio charged over possession of 170 guns
A federal judge denied a request to dismiss a gun charge against an illegal immigrant in Ohio who had been in the U.S. for more than 15 years, rejecting the man’s argument that he has a right to bear arms.
Carlos Serrano-Restrepo was charged earlier this year and was subsequently indicted for possession of a firearm by an alien unlawfully in the U.S., according to WSYX.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began investigating and watching Serrano-Restrepo after he purchased at least 22 firearms and claimed to be a U.S. citizen on the firearms forms.
Agents conducted a search of his home and seized roughly 170 firearms, tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and smoke/marine markers.
Serrano-Restrepo said some of the guns were purchased for self-defense.

If Biden pardons someone–like, say, Hunter or Jack Smith–they can no longer invoke the Fifth Amendment’s right against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before Congress or grand juries.
If those pardoned refuse to testify, they can face new charges for criminal contempt.

Lol, I didn’t know Trump threatened to reveal the Mexican government’s cartel connections unless they do what he wants on the border.
And he threatened massive tariffs.
And he threatened to send in Special Forces to get the cartels.
So…it looks like Mexico is planning to be extra helpful on the border. . . and the Sinaloa Cartel is killing fentanyl makers just to stay off of Trump’s bad side.
Was that so hard?

Just The News: “Walmart on Monday confirmed it would roll back its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies, becoming the latest and largest company to succumb to conservative pressure on the issue.
A string of companies have made changes to their respective DEI initiatives this year, amid scrutiny following a Supreme Court ruling that banned affirmative action from being considered in college admissions. Some of the other companies include DoorDash, Harley-Davidson, and Lyft.
Walmart told the Associated Press that it would monitor third-party items they sell to ensure that they do not include sexual or transgender products aimed at minors, and that it would no longer consider race or gender a factor when offering contracts to suppliers.
The family-friendly retailer also claimed that it will be limiting its grants to Pride events, by reviewing the grants to make sure the event does not include sexualized content that targets children, such as featuring a booth next to a drag show.
“We’ve been on a journey and know we aren’t perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers and suppliers and to be a Walmart for everyone,” the company said in a statement.
Walmart said it will also be ending its racial equity training programs for staff, per CNN, and will not extend its Center for Racial Equity, which was slated to last five years and was established in 2020.”

Too bad! Hire legal Americans & pay a living wage! With all of the new automation, they shouldn’t need illegals!!!
Just The News: “U.S. farm industry groups are seeking an exemption from President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans once he takes office. The groups argue that mass deportations could disrupt the nation’s food supply chain.
Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming White House border advisor or “border czar,” has not said that the Trump administration is considering such exemptions.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Agriculture, almost half of the nation’s farm workers do not have a lawful immigration status.
Dave Puglia, president and CEO of Western Growers, which represents produce farmers, said his group supports the Trump administration focusing resources on deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, according to the Associated Press.”

November 20, 2024The Next Day
Paying homage to a fledgling that I found beneath the biggest tree in my parents backyard.
The little guy had few feathers and had been on the ground for at least a day. He was initially healthy looking and I thought we was learning how to fly. When he still was not flying away from me on another day, I thought he may need help. That evening I cuddled him in the hammock beneath the tree, giving him my warmth. After researching how to help him and learning very little, I made a decision.
I thought that I could learn how to care for him better the following day if he made it through the night. Something that I came to regret. He died outside later that evening, alone.
Perhaps things would be different if I brought him indoors for warmth, or found any form of food to feed him. Unfortunately I cannot change what has transpired. Despite my desire to do good my actions were neutral at best. So I wrote this song that this sweet little creature will not be forgotten.
The chipper melody juxtaposes the unfortunate content of the song, perhaps to represent the endless youth of the bird whose life ended before it had barely begun.
Lyrics
I found you on the ground
Making a sweet sound
And so I bent down
A small friend I found
Little bird, I heard you chirp
Your sweet song
Was gone before too long
I wanted you to be okay
But you died the next day
The next day
Your small body
Nestled on me
Over your cemetery
Beneath that maple tree
Little bird, I heard you chirp
Your sweet song
Was gone before too long
I wanted you to be okay
But you died the next day
The next day
You don’t always get second chances
His soul to keep because I fell asleep
Little bird, food for worms
Because he’s gone, I sing his last song
Little bird, I heard you chirp
Your sweet song
Was gone before too long
I wanted you to be okay
But you died the next day
The next day x2
What a precious example of beauty for ashes. Not even a sparrow falls…

NF: All therapy does is give you an excuse for your own poor choices!!!
https://www.newsweek.com/state-department-therapy-sessions-donald-trump-antony-blinken-darrell-issa-1991003
Our Take: To be fair to these State Department employees, they’re coming to terms with the very real likelihood that they’re going to lose their jobs and, for many of them, face prosecution. I can’t dispute their need for therapy, though I do agree with Issa that we shouldn’t be paying for it.
The State Department is considered by many as ground zero for US government criminal activity, both at home and abroad. Foggy Bottom operates without meaningful oversight and, when scandal erupts, coverups ensue.
Readers will recall former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s actions to prevent her communications from being turned over to investigators. As former FBI Director James Comey said at that time, no reasonable prosecutor would pursue that case — because the State Department, for generations, has operated outside the law.
If you were an employee in that ecosystem, running ops for people like Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, or Antony Blinken, and believing the traditional norm that you were above the law, a Trump victory would certainly result in you needing therapy.
All that to say, I’m not terribly surprised or bothered by State staffers requiring therapy — so long as they’re still prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. — Ashe in America

CAIR Defamation Case Against Former Employee Backfires, Organization Will Now Be Forced to Reveal Funding Sources
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2024/11/cair-defamation-case-against-former-employee-backfires-organization/
FTA –
After a former employee of the Hamas-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) alleged that the organization received funding from foreign sources tied to terrorism, the organization tried to sue the ex-employee into silence.
Ultimately, Cair dropped the suit when it became apparent they would need to open their books and reveal the details of who is funding them and by how much, but the former employee filed a lawsuit of her own.
Now, US Magistrate Judge David Schultz has ruled that CAIR’s donors, funding sources, including potentially foreign sources, and any assets owned by the group are within the “scope of permissible discovery.”

“Drill, Baby, Drill and $50 Oil To Curb Inflation: Inflation is Public Enemy #1”
Peter Navarro, Nov 26, 2024
EXCERPT: “Of the many, many reasons Donald Trump trounced Kamala Harris, inflation is at or near the top of list. Today, too many Americans are being forced to choose between food on the table, medicine in the cabinet, and a roof over their head. Today, too many American businesses have been forced into bankruptcy as inflation has squeezed margins; bankruptcy filings have risen by 40% over the past year alone.
There are many, many ways President-elect Trump has promised to curb inflation – and thereby also bring down interest rates and credit costs. Yet none will be more important than “drill, baby, drill.” This is because of the outsized role oil, natural gas, and petroleum derivatives play directly and indirectly in the cost-price structure of the American economy.
In the transportation sector, its jet fuel for airplanes; gasoline for our cars; diesel for our trucks, buses, trains, and ships.
Natural gas fires our power plants, gas turbines run our factories, propane helps cook and heat the food we eat; and petroleum is also the feedstock for our lubricants, plastics, polymers, and fibers as well as for asphalt for road construction and roofing materials, foam for insulation, plastic for pipes.
In our households, there’s personal care products like cosmetics, shampoos and soaps and our plastic wraps, bags, and containers. We even use petroleum products for medical supplies like IV bags, syringes, and surgical instruments as well as ingredients and pills, capsules and medical devices.
Then there is this chicken and the egg problem: American’s agricultural production accounts for a full 20% of energy expenditures. On our farms, it’s not just diesel and gasoline that drives are tractors and combines. Nitrogen based fertilizers are derived from natural gas while the mining of other types of fertilizers like phosphates is highly energy intensive.
Clearly, the road to price stability – and a return to American strategic energy dominance — runs through the oil fields of states like Alaska, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas and the fracking wells of states like Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas. If Donald Trump can get the price of oil back down to $50 a barrel, that alone will shave anywhere from a half to full point off the inflation rate.
Consider here that over the first four years of the Trump administration’s strategic energy dominance, the price of oil averaged a little over $50 a barrel and gasoline about $2.50. This compares to $80 per barrel on average during the first three years of the inflationary Biden regime and over $70 in 2024 while gasoline has been about a dollar higher – a 40% spike.
How will President Trump operationalize “drill, baby, drill?” Based on his campaign promises – he is that rare president who actually keeps them — expect Trump to dramatically increase oil and gas drilling on other public lands and offshore areas, roll back the onerous environmental regulations established by the Biden administration, reverse the Biden administration’s pause on LNG exports, and say “au revoir” to the Paris Climate Accord as he did in 2017…..”

Just The News: “President Joe Biden on Tuesday said Israel and the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire agreement, which aims to permanently end the conflict.
The United States and France helped facilitate the agreement, which is expected to go into effect early Wednesday. The ceasefire gives Israel 60 days to pull its forces out of Lebanon, which will occur gradually to give Lebanese forces time to mobilize and move in to the area.
Hezbollah is expected to pull its forces and heavy weapons to the Litani River, located about 20 miles away from the Israeli border, according to CBS News.
“Under the deal reached today, effective at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow, local time, the fighting across the Lebanese Israeli border will end,” Biden said in the White House Rose Garden. “This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. What is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed, I emphasize, will not be allowed, to threaten the security of Israel again.”
The president also noted that the United States does not have any plans to deploy forces to southern Lebanon.
“This is consistent with my commitment to the American people to not put U.S. troops in combat in this conflict,” Biden said. “Instead, we, along with France and others, will provide the necessary assistance to make sure this deal is implemented fully and effectively.”

EXCERPT: “Meghan Markle has released a statement following her appearance at a Thanksgiving event last week, sans husband Prince Harry.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly in the midst of a professional separation, with reports suggesting that their work relationship is “in a very bad state.”
Indeed, over the last few months both the “Suits” alum, 43, and Harry, 40, have been seen attending various events solo. Markle recently hosted an intimate dinner for the Southern California Welcome Project through the Sussexes’ Archewell Foundation. Her husband, however, did not attend the event.
The former actress has since shared a statement on their Archewell website following the Thanksgiving event, in which she opened up about the “heartfelt dinner” she threw for Afghan women with their partner organization, Mina’s List.
“This initiative has spent the past year building community through storytelling and creating a safe space for women who have resettled in the US from Afghanistan,” the statement read….”
