The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro

On October 10, 1985, the hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro reaches a dramatic climax when U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept an Egyptian airliner attempting to fly the Palestinian hijackers to freedom and force the jet to land at a NATO base in Sigonella, Sicily. American and Italian troops surrounded the plane, and the terrorists were taken into Italian custody.

On October 7, four heavily armed Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt. Some 320 crewmembers and 80 passengers were taken hostage. Hundreds of other passengers had disembarked the cruise ship earlier that day to visit Cairo and tour the Egyptian pyramids. Identifying themselves as members of the Palestine Liberation Front—a Palestinian splinter group—the gunmen demanded the release of 50 Palestinian militants imprisoned in Israel. If their demands were not met, they threatened to blow up the ship and kill the 11 Americans on board. The next morning, they also threatened to kill the British passengers.

How the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Began

The Achille Lauro traveled to the Syrian port of Tartus, where the terrorists demanded negotiations on October 8. Syria refused to permit the ship to anchor in its waters, which prompted more threats from the hijackers. That afternoon, they shot and killed Leon Klinghoffer, a 69-year-old Jewish-American who was confined to a wheelchair as the result of a stroke. His body was then pushed overboard in the wheelchair.

Yasir Arafat’s Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) condemned the hijacking, and PLO officials joined with Egyptian authorities in attempting to resolve the crisis. On the recommendation of the negotiators, the cruise ship traveled to Port Said. On October 9, the hijackers surrendered to Egyptian authorities and freed the hostages in exchange for a pledge of safe passage to an undisclosed destination.

The next day–October 10–the four hijackers boarded an EgyptAir Boeing 737 airliner, along with Mohammed Abbas, a member of the Palestine Liberation Front who had participated in the negotiations; a PLO official; and several Egyptians. The 737 took off from Cairo at 4:15 p.m. EST and headed for Tunisia. President Ronald Reagan gave his final order approving the plan to intercept the aircraft, and at 5:30 p.m. EST, F-14 Tomcat fighters located the airliner 80 miles south of Crete. Without announcing themselves, the F-14s trailed the airliner as it sought and was denied permission to land at Tunis. After a request to land at the Athens airport was likewise refused, the F-14s turned on their lights and flew wing-to-wing with the airliner. The aircraft was ordered to land at a NATO air base in Sicily, and the pilot complied, touching down at 6:45 p.m. The hijackers were arrested soon after. Abbas and the other Palestinian were released, prompting criticism from the United States, which wanted to investigate their possible involvement in the hijacking.

On July 10, 1986, an Italian court later convicted three of the terrorists and sentenced them to prison terms ranging from 15 to 30 years. Three others, including Mohammed Abbas, were convicted in absentia for masterminding the hijacking and sentenced to life in prison. They received harsher penalties because, unlike the hijackers, who the court found were acting for “patriotic motives,” Abbas and the others conceived the hijacking as a “selfish political act” designed “to weaken the leadership of Yasir Arafat.” The fourth hijacker was a minor who was tried and convicted separately.

what a gorgeous star studded sky this morning! it’s so dark here, without lights, a clear sky is breathtaking! so many stars! it’s been a while since i could see them like this!

    1. Morning, Pat! Clear skies here, too, but not seeing a lot of stars. Wheezer has found another hidey-hole on the patio – he climbed inside the top shelf of the shelving unit that the glass top from my Mom’s coffee table is resting on. Got a bit chilly for him I guess. Temp is 39.

320 crew members couldn’t somehow get 4 POS terrorists under control? Yeah, no – what BS!!! I vaguely remember it when it happened but I was focused on trying to keep my daughter fed, clothed and housed w/no support from my POS ex.

    A couple of his comments:

I’m a little peeved I lost my law school scholarship. I think he should have done total amnesty for ALL political incidents of 2020/2021 as an act of “unity”. BLM and Antifa weren’t prosecuted anyways, but it would have saved the lot of us.

But the support was good in there, I always had money to eat (Except the first few weeks). But I don’t see how we can recover from the media slander and precious years of youth we lost and the torture we went through without compensation. How do you wipe the net of the media slander?

But if Trump comes through and pardons us and gives us compensation, I will be golden. Because it was absolutely worth it. Wouldn’t have been able to look myself in the mirror if I hadn’t shown up.

They tried to get us hurt in DC.

They tried as hard as they could to “integrate” us with other “PC’ inmates. So in DC we were on involuntary PC due to our high profile status. I’d have been okay because I’m funny, but many other J6ers would have died in the DC Jail general population part. They were stopped when we all contacted the Marshalls and shit and found out their contract didn’t allow for us to be housed with local inmates, because we were federal.

The jail is woke as fuck. Trannies everywhere. They couldn’t re-educate us because we would “buck” (aka resist not go with it). But they definitely tried to make us suffer needlessly. If we asked them to do something, they would aggressively try to do the opposite. Guards would routinely yell shit to violate HIPAA, sometimes on purpose. But most of the bad shit came from the higher ups. The other inmates for the most part loved us and saw us as celebrities. The night I left I saw a guy I went to court with and he yelled “Trump forever! He gonna win man!” and his friend was saying pro-Trump stuff too! 😂👌

ELECTION INTERFERENCE: It would appear the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) has been violated as the personal cell phone and email address of 150,000 ASU students have been provided to the Kamala Harris campaign. Additionally, Arizona has laws that regulate the use of public resources for political purposes. Under Arizona Revised Statutes § 16-192, it is illegal to use public resources, including university databases, for partisan political purposes. I highly recommend you have Garrett Ziegler (@MarcoPolo501c3), who is currently being sued by Hunter Biden, as a guest on your podcast.

Garrett worked in the White House with Peter Navarro before writing a 644-page Report on the Biden Laptop meticulously documenting 459 crimes committed by the Bidens and their associates.

    •140 business crimes
    •191 sex crimes
    •128 drug crimes

You can read the report for free at http://bidenreport.com.

    @MarcoPolo501c3

: “We reached out to every single pimp, hooker, drug dealer, and business partner on Hunter Biden’s laptop…

We put all of his emails and photos online… You have FARA violations, money laundering, sex trafficking, and conspiracy to commit bribery…

Not one email has proven to be false… We put all of the metadata out there… When you go through the emails, they clearly show how the Bidens were an agent for a foreign principal…

Hunter was on the hook for Joe Biden’s living expenses… There was a joint bank account between Hunter Biden, Eric Schwerin, and Joe Biden… Emails prove it.

Joe isn’t listed on official documents, but Hunter pays his living expenses, house payments, and everything else…

Hunter’s business paid for Joe’s second iPhone. His burner phone… That phone was exclusively for Hunter and Joe…

The Secret Service didn’t harden the phone, which was a clear national security risk. It was probably bugged by multiple Five Eyes countries.

It’s tax fraud because you got money going to Joe every single year without declaring it as a gift… It is FARA violations, and because it’s FARA violations, it’s money laundering.

Again, this is all laid out through emails, text messages, WhatsApp messages, pictures, screenshots, audio recordings, and videos… Joe Biden got the money through house payments and joint bank accounts…

Hunter blew through a million dollars on hookers and blow in 11 months. At the end of 2018, he asked Joe for a $75k wire so he could check into rehab. The very next day, he’s wiring $10,000 to a Russian pimp…

We have 20 separate drug deals of crack cocaine with the U.S. President’s son. We put the name and number of the drug dealer…

In certain cases, the drug dealer was prosecuted, and Hunter wasn’t… This is the epitome of unequal application of the law.”

  6. Good morning, Pat and Filly,

I’m home for a couple of nights, for a dentist appt tomorrow morning. Need to get mail, pick up groceries, do laundry, etc. No yard work this time.

Will go back Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday morning and stay with Sally through the time Milton passes through FL until next Sunday evening.

Looks like the Village and Suwannee County may not have high winds and and power outage this time….but want to be prepared just in case it takes a turn more northward.

Several of the people at the Village have relatives in the storm’s path, so we will be praying for them. The current predictions are that Milton will diminish and not hit Tampa as a Major Hurricane.

  9. “Butler and Juneau Rallies Make Clear: There Are More Trump Supporters In America Than Ever — If the 2016 campaign was the great awakening, 2024 demarcates the great conversion.”

    Paul Ingrassia, Oct 07, 2024

    Image

EXCERPT: “The tides have shifted in MAGA world – and those reverberations are being felt not only in politics, but across all of American society.  Many commentators on X noted in the aftermath of Saturday’s historic rally to Butler, Pennsylvania, the site where Donald Trump was nearly slain some three months ago, how Lazarean the whole event was — with one insightful commentator noting how if one had the ability to time travel back to 2014 and explain to someone back then that “by 2024, Donald Trump, who had been president, was waging his third presidential campaign – and, exactly a month before election day, had made a pilgrimage to the location in which a bullet had nearly struck him down during the campaign – where he was joined by Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) CEO, Elon Musk, on stage, who was jubilantly jumping for joy, onstage, before a crowd size of one hundred thousand people” that person might have looked at you like a lunatic who had escaped the asylum!

But reality, as they say, is stranger than fiction.  The timeline of events this election cycle, not to say the last ten years, has been truly surreal.  Our reality, in 2024 America, is one where the forces of good are seemingly making a comeback against the forces of evil, where the divide between the two sides could not be any clearer (or more stark) – and where the outcome of this race, now less than a month away from November 5th, will truly be the most consequential of any presidential election – certainly in living memory, perhaps in history.

Dovetailing with that reality does appear to be a genuine shift in momentum, particularly in recent weeks – since the debate and second attempt on President Trump’s life. At Butler 2.0, Kamala Harris’ media-manufactured “honeymoon” over the summer is but a distant memory.  Everything about the event – from the optics down to the choice of music (which included stirring live performances from Lee Greenwood, who belted out an emotive “God Bless the U.S.A.” – and beautiful renditions of “Ave Maria” and “How Great Thou Art” (among other melodies) by Tenor Chris Macchio, which added a layer of solemnity – and gravitas, even – to end a most remarkable night…..”

  16. Just The News: “The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reinstated a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, reversing a lower court’s ruling as it reviews an appeal.

The ban will go into effect at 5 p.m. local time, but allows some exceptions, such as to protect the life and health of the mother, and some situations where a fetal anomaly is detected, per NBC News.

The lower court lifted the state ban on abortions after six weeks last month, which made it legal for the first 22 weeks of pregnancy. The initial six-week ban was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp nearly five years ago, but did not go into effect until 2022.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney wrote in his opinion last month that women in Georgia have the right to “control [their] own [bodies], to decide what happens to it and in it, and to reject state interference with [their] healthcare choices.”

“That power is not, however, unlimited,” McBurney wrote. “When a fetus growing inside a woman reaches viability, when society can assume care and responsibility for that separate life, then — and only then — may society intervene.”

Multiple reproductive rights groups slammed Monday’s ruling in statements, claiming that it has sowed uncertainty and “wreaked havoc” on the lives of many voters.

“It is cruel that our patients’ ability to access the reproductive health care they need has been taken away yet again,” Feminist Women’s Health Center executive director Kwajelyn Jackson said in a statement. “This ban has wreaked havoc on Georgians’ lives, and our patients deserve better.”

  17. “Hurricane Helene: “Don’t forget about us.” A quick update from my visit with survivors in Georgia and North Carolina”

    Tulsi Gabbard, Oct 07, 2024

“It’s hard to find the words. The apocalyptic devastation I saw in North Carolina is hard to describe. The resilience of people of who have lost everything is hard is difficult to convey — but I’ve seen it before. It’s what I saw in the residents of West Maui last year in the wake of the tragic fires that completely decimated the historic town of Lahaina, and many homes in the surrounding areas.

In both cases, I stood in awe of their resilience, strength, and what we in Hawaii call the aloha spirit — even those who lost everything, stepping up to do all they can for their neighbors, friends, and those in need.

Unfortunately, much like we saw on Maui, there are still many people who are not getting the assistance they need. Communications are still down in many isolated areas and small towns. The closest thing they have to emergency services is a volunteer fire department. Their limited emergency resources are being quickly overwhelmed, and they have not seen anyone from FEMA come and knock on their door to offer assistance. There are volunteers who are helping out wherever possible.

We delivered a trailer full of chainsaws, shovels, rakes, generators, fuel/oil, and water/electrolytes. They are trying to survive and recover what little is left. The thought of rebuilding is difficult to comprehend at this moment. What does that look like? What will it take? How long will it take? The heartfelt message I heard again and again from those facing the challenge of their lifetime was, “Don’t forget us.”

I truly thank God and all of you for the quick response and thousands of generous donations to my all-volunteer nonprofit We Must Protect. In less than a week, we’ve raised $331,833 and every dollar is going to Hurricane Helene survivors.

With your selfless contributions and a gracious, significant bulk discount from Lowe’s, we were able to distribute emergency supplies, chainsaws, generators, leaf blowers and shovels to help clear roads and remove debris, as well as first aid kits, electrolytes for hydration, toilet paper, and other essentials that survivors desperately need. We are getting requests for more supplies, and working to continue to deliver direct support. We will keep you updated.

Thank you for standing with our fellow Americans in their time of need. We don’t know yet how many lives have been lost, but we do know that there are thousands of people in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia who are struggling and need our help.

Here’s a short video that shares just a snapshot of what I experienced in North Carolina. It’s not just the wreckage, but the voices of our fellow Americans sharing what they are going through, and how we can help. We have to make sure they are not forgotten. It’s going to be a long road ahead. Let’s continue to support them in any way we can.

Thank you for your help, your aloha, and your compassion.

    With gratitude, Tulsi”

  19. EXCERPT: “In addition to hearing the first oral arguments of its 2024 term, the U.S. Supreme Court issued numerous Orders on Monday morning. One of those was the court’s decision not to take up the Biden administration’s appeal from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding a Texas abortion law.

In January, the Fifth Circuit ruled that Texas’ abortion law is not preempted by the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1395dd (“EMTALA”) and upheld an injunction issued by the District Court. That decision laid out the statutory background of the issues.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTALA), 42 U.S.C. § 1395dd, requires hospitals with emergency departments that receive Medicare reimbursement to provide a medical screening and, if an emergency medical condition exists, necessary stabilizing treatment or an appropriate transfer irrespective of the individual’s ability to pay. EMTALA was enacted to combat patient dumping, the practice of some hospitals turning away or transferring indigent patients without evaluation or treatment.

The State of Texas, along with two medical associations with members located in Texas (Texas plaintiffs), sued the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Director of the Survey and Operations Group for CMS, and the Director of the Quality Safety and Oversight Group for CMS (collectively HHS), challenging HHS’s guidance on EMTALA’s requirement that physicians must provide an abortion when that care is the necessary stabilizing treatment for an emergency medical condition. The Texas plaintiffs alleged that the guidance mandates providers to perform elective abortions in excess of HHS’s authority and contrary to state law and sought to enjoin its enforcement. The district court enjoined the guidance’s interpretation of EMTALA within Texas or against any member of a plaintiff organization. HHS appealed. For the following reasons, we AFFIRM.

As further explained in the decision:

In the wake of Dobbs, so-called trigger laws sprung into effect, meaning laws that were enacted in anticipation of abortion’s return to state control automatically went into effect. The Texas Human Life Protection Act (HLPA) is such a law. Dobbs triggered HLPA’s 30-day clock and the law went into effect on August 25, 2022. The HLPA prohibits abortions unless the pregnancy places the female at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function. Tex. Health & Safety Code § 170A.002(b)(2). In such circumstances, the person performing, inducing, or attempting the abortion must be a licensed physician exercising reasonable medical judgment by providing the best opportunity for the unborn child to survive unless, in the physician’s reasonable medical judgment, it would pose a greater risk of the pregnant female’s death or a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant female. Id. § 170.002(b)(1), (3).

With its order denying certiorari on the case Monday, the Supreme Court thus allows the Fifth Circuit ruling to stand…..”

In its lengthy Monday Order List, the Supreme Court also declined to take up the following:

    • X’s appeal challenging Special Counsel Jack Smith’s access to former President Donald Trump’s Twitter data
    • A challenge to San Francisco’s “Sunlight on Dark Money” disclosure law
    • An appeal by congressional candidate Wayne Johnson (R) claiming Fox News engaged in racketeering in the 2022 election
    • An attempt to revive a lawsuit filed by Michigan and Virginia parents against Attorney General Merrick Garland over the DOJ school board memo
    • Pennsylvania Republican lawmakers’ challenge to executive orders by President Joe Biden and Governor Josh Shapiro expanding voting access
    • A challenge to Michigan’s ban on public dollars for private schools
