Today is National Sandcastle Day and I was surprised to find that there are sandcastle cakes! I won’t attempt to make one (although I will provide the links to websites that show you step by step how to make one. Spoiler: the “sand” is actually crushed Nilla type wafer cookies!)

Sandcastle wedding cakes!

Lovely sandcastle!

GOOD MORNIN’ PAT AND FILLY!
Lovely idea for a cake for beach birthday or wedding! We used to go to the beach a lot… St. George Island on the Gulf of Mexico. The sand is like fine sugar and the waves are gentle. The seafood is awesome and Bald Eagles nest in the pine trees. It’s a real paradise – !
And that paradise and the Village where Sally Q lives – will be hit by the new Tropical Storm on Monday.
I’ll be staying over to take care of Sally through the power outages, etc. I don’t want her aide on the road in all the wind, possibly trees and power lines down.

The storm will be named Debby. Since it’s likely to not be a ‘retired’ name for a storm that takes a lot of life and does catastrophic damage – it will be used again.

Because of sand and fire ants, I never wear flip flops and do not enjoy wearing sandals. In fact, I think I’ve given all of them away. Most of the time I wear socks and stockings inside shoes. I’m very protective of my feet.

Morning, Pat! I’ve also always hated walking on the beach and sand in my shoes or flip flops. I’d prefer going barefoot – I could live my entire life barefoot! But the sand is usually too hot. And since I hate going into the ocean at all, it is not an issue for me.

Afterwards, she sat down to clean herself, then took a short nap on my chair before departing. Humid again – hit 99 yesterday! 71 this morning w/clear skies. The cooler weather is supposed to hit by Tuesday, with highs only in the 70’s and good chances for rain. It will be a relief, that’s for sure!

Appeals Court Kicks Jack Smith’s January 6 Case Back to Judge Chutkan After Supreme Court Immunity Ruling | by Cristina Laila
The case was sent back to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit after the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts they took while in office. The three-judge panel at the appeals court level — which previously found that Trump could not be shielded from criminal charges — issued a brief, unsigned order sending the matter back to the district court on Friday.
“It is ordered, on the court’s own motion, that this case be remanded to the district court for further proceedings consistent with the Supreme Court’s opinion,” the D.C. Circuit said.

Undocumented Immigrants in US Pay Nearly $100 Billion in Taxes
By Nic Querolo
July 30, 2024 at 4:01 AM UTC
Undocumented immigrants paid almost $100 billion of taxes, underscoring the importance of border policies on the country’s tax collections, according to a new report.
One of the most common arguments for curtailing immigration is the cost borne by the US government. But undocumented immigrants pay more than a quarter, about 26%, of their income in taxes, in line with the median taxpayer, according to a report released Tuesday by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a left-leaning think tank.
In total, undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion, or roughly $9,000 per person, in taxes in 2022, the report shows. While their incomes are usually lower, they’re less likely to claim refunds or earn tax-preferred income.
About one third of the total dollars collected from undocumented immigrants funded programs they’re mostly barred from using, including $26 billion to Social Security and $6 billion to Medicare, the report said.

death penalty back on the table–i think the backlash was tremendous
Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on Friday relieved the overseer of the war court at Guantánamo Bay and revoked a plea agreement reached earlier this week with the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and two alleged accomplices.
The Pentagon announced the decision with the release of a memorandum relieving the senior official at the Defense Department responsible for military commissions of her oversight of the capital case against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his alleged accomplices for the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field.
The overseer, retired Brig. Gen. Susan K. Escallier, signed a pretrial agreement on Wednesday with Mr. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi that exchanged guilty pleas for sentences of at most life in prison. In taking away the authority, Mr. Austin assumed direct oversight of the case and canceled the agreement, effectively reinstating it as a death-penalty case.
Because of the stakes involved, the “responsibility for such a decision should rest with me,” Mr. Austin said in an order released Friday night by the Pentagon.
“Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pretrial agreements that you signed on July 31, 2024.”
Ms. Escallier’s approval of the agreement that was reached between prosecutors and the defendants over two years of negotiations had appeared to resolve the case, which had been mired in pretrial hearings since 2012. Some family members of those killed in the attacks reacted with anger that a death sentence was no longer possible.
Mr. Austin was traveling abroad and returned to the United States later that day.

Just The News: “Larry Krasner led a vanguard of self-proclaimed progressive prosecutors during the Trump administration, the subject of his own docuseries as well as bipartisan ire for a crime spike amid the Philadelphia district attorney’s policies of declining to prosecute or deprioritizing certain crimes, including gun possession arrests and ending cash bail.
It was part of a broader backlash against DAs funded by progressive megadonor George Soros, though unlike San Francisco’s Chesa Boudin, Krasner couldn’t face recall. A court blocked Krasner’s impeachment trial from going forward after the Pennsylvania House held him in contempt for ignoring its subpoena request for an investigation of the crime spike.
With more than a year left in his second term, Krasner is now facing a literal trial for a different issue: the COVID-19 vaccine mandate he unilaterally imposed on his office.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday overturned a lower court’s summary judgment in favor of Krasner and the city, saying Judge Paul Diamond “overlooked factual disputes that a jury must resolve” in Krasner’s firing of assistant DA Rachel Spivack, an Orthodox Jew whose “religious beliefs preclude receiving any vaccine” and received an exemption during law school.
One dispute is whether Krasner showed religious hostility by testifying that he denied religious accommodations, exceeding the city’s vaccine mandate, because “some people” are “flat-out unscientific and … not as concerned as they really should be for their fellow human beings.”
The celebrity DA cited cases in which parents were incarcerated for denying medical care to their children based on their religious beliefs, testifying that “those children lost their lives because their parents were utterly unscientific in what they were doing.”
“Unanswered factual questions pervade this inquiry,” the three-judge panel said, and if “the mandate is not both neutral and generally applicable,” a jury must determine if the vaccine mandate was “the least restrictive means of achieving [Krasner’s] objective.”
Its rebuke could be even more crushing to Krasner because of the optics: three women appointed by Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, two of them black.
“Due to the fact that this is an open matter, we have no comment at this time,” Philadelphia DA’s Office spokesperson Dustin Slaughter told Just the News, and didn’t answer when asked whether it would seek review by the full 3rd Circuit.”

“The U.S. Navy avoided a trial last week in another COVID vaccine mandate lawsuit, settling with a class of thousands of service members – led by Navy SEALs and Navy Special Operators – with religious objections to COVID vaccines.
They aren’t getting compensation for past harms but “will now have an opportunity to have their records corrected and their careers protected,” said their lawyers at First Liberty Institute and Hacker Stephens, which are getting $1.5 million in attorney’s fees.
The next three promotion boards “must not consider any adverse information related solely to COVID-19 vaccine refusal” in accommodation request cases, the Navy agreed to post a statement affirming its “respect for religious service members,” train commanders better in reviewing requests and revise a policy “changed during the mandate,” the lawyers said.
The class includes those who chose to “voluntarily separate” after certification and had to rescind their religious accommodation request to do so, according to the settlement site.
The legal updates took place against the backdrop of most American adults now counting as “anti-vaxxers” under the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition, vaccine injury and Freedom of Information Act litigator Aaron Siri wrote in his newsletter.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures released July 26, from the National Immunization Survey, show that less than half of adults say they were vaccinated against influenza as of June 30 and less than a quarter each have received an up-to-date COVID vaccine and, for those 60 and up, an RSV vaccine as of July 20.
Though the city of Philadelphia is named as a co-defendant in Spivack’s First Amendment and Pennsylvania Religious Freedom Restoration Act lawsuit, Krasner’s behavior is the square focus of the 3rd Circuit ruling.
His office’s original COVID vaccine mandate in August 2021 granted religious exemptions “absent undue hardship” following an “individualized assessment in each situation” in which the parties would “explore potential reasonable accommodations.”
Scheduled to start the following month, Spivack “submitted a religious exemption request with a supporting letter from her rabbi.” She was then told to fill out a form asking detailed questions about her vaccination history, prior religious exemptions, congregational membership and attendance, and “religious beliefs about diet and medical care.”
Spivack responded that Orthodox Judaism doesn’t have a central authority for deciding vaccine questions, that different rabbis “may come to different, but equally valid, rulings about a course of action,” and that “she had not received any vaccines in the past ten years.”
Krasner changed the policy in January 2022 before reading Spivack’s application – testifying later that the city’s policy is an “obstacle” to public health in his office – and “decided to categorically deny religious exemption requests” under his reading of the law, fear of the Omicron variant surge and “discomfort” with interrogating his employees’ religious beliefs.
“No evidence shows that the January 2022 policy was committed to writing or disseminated to DAO staff,” the court said, calling it a “striking oversight” in an office that “typically” communicates COVID policies in writing……”

Just The News: “At least two dozen Catholic bishops and three Cardinals as of Friday have signed an open letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), demanding an apology for appearing to mock the Last Supper during its opening ceremony last week.
France’s opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics has been hit with heavy backlash from the Christian community after one of its segments displayed drag queens gathered for a feast that looked like Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous “Last Supper” painting. But the event’s director claimed the drag queens were gathered for a Pagan feast instead.
The letter asked the committee to “repudiate” and “apologize” for the display. It has been signed by Catholic leaders from around the world, though the majority of the signatories come from the United States.
https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/storage/pdf/open-letter-to-the-olympic-committee.pdf
“With shock, the world watched as the Summer Olympics in Paris opened with a grotesque and blasphemous depiction of the Last Supper,” the letter stated, per the Catholic News Agency. “It is hard to understand how the faith of over 2 billion people can be so casually and intentionally blasphemed.”
The signers also committed to a day of “prayer and fasting in reparation for this blasphemy.”
An Olympic committee spokesperson told Reuters after the ceremony that the segment was not intended to be disrespectful and said it was “really sorry” if any group had taken offense. But Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, said the response was patronizing.
”A real apology would be something like: This was a mistake. It should never have been done, and we’re sorry for it,” Barron said in a post on X. “I don’t think Christians should be mollified; I think we should keep raising our voices.”

Just The News: “The Pentagon deployed more U.S. warships and fighter jets to the Middle East on Friday to help combat increasing tension between Israel, Iran, and the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah.
Tensions reached new levels this week, after Hezbollah launched a strike against Israel last weekend, which killed 12 children on a soccer field. Israel has since retaliated with an airstrike in Lebanon, and an alleged strike in Tehran that killed a Hamas leader. The Lebanon strike reportedly killed an important Hezbollah leader, according to Israel.
Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said the deployment is an attempt to mitigate any future escalation by Iran or its proxies. Iran has vowed to retaliate against Israel for the attack in Tehran, but Israel has not commented on the strike.
“Since the horrific Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the Secretary of Defense has reiterated that the United States will protect our personnel and interests in the region, including our ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel,” Singh said in a statement.
“To that end, Secretary [Lloyd] Austin has ordered adjustments to U.S. military posture designed to improve U.S. force protection, to increase support for the defense of Israel, and ensure the United States is prepared to respond to various contingencies,” she added.
The actions include replacing the USS Theodore Roosevelt with the USS Abraham Lincoln, sending an additional fighter squadron to the Middle East, and sending additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command regions.
“As we have demonstrated since October and again in April, the United States’ global defense is dynamic and the Department of Defense retains the capability to deploy on short notice to meet evolving national security threats,” Singh said.
“The United States also remains intently focused on de-escalating tensions in the region and pushing for a ceasefire as part of a hostage deal to bring the hostages home and end the war in Gaza.”

Just The News: “North Carolina GOP Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson on Friday released a campaign ad backing the Old North State’s 12-week abortion ban in which he and his wife recalled their experience choosing to get an abortion years ago.
In May last year, North Carolina lawmakers implemented a 12-week abortion ban with exceptions for instances of rape, incest, and threats to the life of the mother. The measure became law after lawmakers overrode the veto of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.
“Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. We had an abortion,” Robinson said in the ad, appearing alongside his wife, Yolanda Robinson. “It was like this solid pain between us, that we never spoke of.”
“It’s something that stays with me forever,” Yolanda said.
The gubernatorial hopeful insisted that the state’s law and the exceptions it provides in limited circumstances would protect and aid mothers while preventing “cruel” late-term abortions. “When I’m governor, mothers in need will be supported,” he declared.
Robinson is facing a close race against state Attorney General Josh Stein.”

“STUNNING: Ninth Circuit Reverses Its Ruling on Voter Registration and Proof of Citizenship in Arizona”
Red State, By Becca Lower | 11:25 PM on August 02, 2024
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “In a stunning reversal from its ruling on July 18, in which the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said that anyone registering to vote in the state of Arizona must provide proof of citizenship to vote in all elections, the court now says that the documentation is not necessary, by 2-1, on Thursday.
The rationale, from the judges on the three-judge panel who were in the majority? The change this close to the November elections would cause “confusion and chaos”:
In dissent, Judge Patrick Bumatay “argu[ed] the earlier panel got it right. The state legislature cannot be bound by an agreement reached between a former secretary of state and the federal government without running into ‘serious separation of powers concerns,’ he wrote.”
This “agreement” language might require explanation for anyone outside the Copper state: Arizona currently has a two-track registration system; if you can show the required proof of citizenship, you may vote in any election. But those who cannot prove they are citizens get “federal only” ballots — that is, they can only vote for federal offices like congressional and presidential races.
In reaction to the ruling, the Republican leader of the state Senate vowed to petition the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay:
At the time of this writing, the “[a]ttorneys for the civil rights groups that have fought the law did not respond to requests for comment,” according to the Arizona Republic.
Here’s where things stand in November, unless SCOTUS steps in. The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office’s communications director Aaron Thacker said:
This is a developing story. RedState will bring you further updates as they become available.”

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – HOA members in Colorado tried to shut down a children’s lemonade stand by calling the sheriff’s office. Home owners association members called the Summit County Sheriff’s Office complaining about children running an illegal lemonade stand, KKTV reported.
The callers said the kids were blocking the road. However, when deputies arrived, they found that the children were not blocking the roadway but did ask them to move back from the road for their safety. Thinking the matter settled, deputies started to move out.
But the homeowners came out and began yelling at the children claiming they were on private property. So the deputies came back. The deputies again found no issue with where the kids were selling their lemonade. Deputies determined that the property was shared HOA property and because the children’s parents are part of the HOA they had a right to be there.

The squirrels destroyed my hanging bird feeders long ago, by hanging and swinging on them. Hummingbirds used to come to their feeder, but that was plagued by ants and mold. So ow I scatter seeds on the ground. Hummers used to come to my lone surviving plant that I bought at Home Depot, but that eventually died, and I haven’t replaced it. Sudden freezes and long periods of no rain, interspersed with torrential downpours makes gardening difficult in all seasons. I have one grapefruit tree that has survived it all, and it has litle fruits this year, so I’m hoping. Blueberries and figs don’t last past the bud stage. Birds, squirrels, deer, or all three, eat whatever they can grach.

I beat my squirrels but it takes a lot of doing! The slinky on the pole works perfectly! I’m on the very edge of town, with empty fields to the south hosting cattle/calves occasionally – that section is outside the city limits. But there is enough traffic in the area that I don’t have to worry about the bigger critters, plus my backyard is fenced. The only thing of any size around here are the ground hogs, which I’ve only seen once here. For a few years, until my neighbor to the north removed his old chicken coop, I’m pretty sure there was a den of foxes underneath it. I never saw them but would hear them at night or early in the AM.

I’m sure wild animals migrate, too, just as humans do. Coyotes are new to this area. I’ve heard them yipping occasionally, in the spring, across the marsh, in the new development, spurred by Yankee migration down thecEastern Coast, and local government catering to real estate pressures, line Union Cp, which became International Paper, and meanwhile developed The Landings on its former tree farm, on Skidaway Island.

Before I went out & watered my plants, I watched an episode of Treehouse Masters at a plantation in Lynchburg, VA that is a wedding venue for the area. Stunning honeymoon treehouse designed in the Thomas Jefferson style of the plantation.

It isn’t mine either but that was what they wanted specifically, to go with the overall “flavor” of the plantation.

Wouldn’t you want to spend your wedding night in a place like that? What if it wasn’t a treehouse?

Kamala Harris doesn’t have the mental capacity to do a REAL Debate against me, scheduled for September 4th in Pennsylvania. She’s afraid to do it because there is no way she can justify her Corrupt and Open Borders, the Environmental Destruction of our Country, the Afghanistan Embarrassment, Runaway Inflation, Terrible Economy, High Interest Rates and Taxes, and her years long fight to stop the words, “Merry Christmas.” I’ll see her on September 4th or, I won’t see her at all. She is acknowledged to be the Worst Vice President in History, which works very nicely against the Worst President, Crooked Joe Biden. The combination of these two Low IQ individuals have destroyed our Country, but we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

“Drunken Kamala Mistakenly Picks Wrong Shapiro For VP”
Politics · Aug 3, 2024 · BabylonBee.com
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the first major gaffe of her campaign, a heavily inebriated Kamala Harris accidentally chose the wrong Jewish guy named “Shapiro” as her Vice Presidential running mate.
“Come on up here Ben! Haha you and your adorable yarmulka hahaha,” laughed Harris at the press conference. “I thought you wore glasses? Whatever. Woo, Pennsylvania is ours!”
According to sources, Harris was quite defensive when campaign aides pointed out her slight error. “Geez, lay off,” said Harris, holding herself up with a parking meter. “He’s white, Jewish, and named ‘Shapiro’. I was pretty dang close. How different can they really be?”
Though initially caught off guard by the announcement, Ben Shapiro sent shockwaves through the political landscape by accepting the nomination. “Am I going to need massive amounts of valium to tolerate being around Kamala? Sure. Will I have to rupture my own eardrums? Definitely,” explained Shapiro. “Still, it will be worth it to be the proverbial hacker, destroying the Democratic empire from the inside. Speaking of hackers, don’t forget to stop over at Express VPN and use promocode ‘BEN4VP’ for 20% off your first three months of ultra-secure internet.”
At publishing time, Harris had reportedly asked Shapiro if he “could, like, talk way slower.”

“Amazon Releases Special Edition ‘Husband Alexa’ That Will Respond To Wife’s Stories On Your Behalf”
Tech · Aug 1, 2024 · BabylonBee.com
SEATTLE, WA — Amazon announced this week that it would be releasing a special edition version of its popular Alexa smart speaker exclusively for husbands called “Husband Alexa.” The new device — also called “Alex” — will respond to your wife’s long stories so you don’t have to.
“We recognize there’s a large market share to be had in this demographic,” Amazon spokesman Ron Farrell told members of the media at a press conference this week. “Men who can’t help but zone out while their wives drone on and on, this one’s for you! Husband Alexa will do the hard work on your behalf with automated responses like ‘Sounds great, Honey,’ and ‘She was definitely in the wrong.’”
The Husband Alexa will come with hundreds of preset responses that will make your wife feel heard and validated as she enters the 27th minute of her story about that thing her sister said today that really irked her but she can’t really explain why.
“Fascinating stuff, Sweetheart… tell me more,” Husband Alexa might respond, or, “Wow, she’s obviously just super jealous of you, why don’t you keep talking while I search for some good Chinese takeout for dinner tonight?”
Advancements in Husband Alexa’s AI mean it will even learn to detect when your wife is just venting so that it can remain silent and not try to solve her problems, which makes Husband Alexa even smarter than its normal female counterpart.
At publishing time, Amazon announced it would also be releasing Wife Alexa, which can feign interest in over 150 video games.

“White House Assures Journalists They Only Have To Pretend Kamala Is Likable For A Couple More Months”
Politics · Aug 2, 2024 · BabylonBee.com
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the 2024 presidential race makes its turn into the final stretch, the White House assured journalists that they would only have to pretend Kamala Harris is likable for a couple more months.
Members of the media, weary from the exhausting duty of portraying Harris as capable, experienced, qualified, and decent, were relieved to find out that they would only have to maintain the ruse until election day.
“Don’t worry, you don’t have to do this forever,” one White House insider told reporters. “We just have to make people think she’s a bright, likable person until they cast their votes… or until we cast their votes for them, am I right? But for real though, once the election is over, you can stop trying so hard.”
Journalists were glad to learn that their herculean efforts would not be an ongoing requirement. “It’s a big relief,” one reporter said. “Making her seem like a person anyone would want to be around is a tall order. We leave work drenched in sweat every night from the strain of propping her up as a likable human being. I don’t think we could keep it up beyond November even if we had to. Thankfully, we can stop doing it after the election and just go back to hiding her flaws like we normally do for every Democrat.”
At publishing time, the White House had informed journalists that they should start preparing now for the difficult job of portraying Harris as being a successful president if she wins this year and runs again in 2028.
