Ancient Mosaic

This story was found on CNN.com and it’s about an ancient mosaic found buried under Rome.  It’s gorgeous!

From the article:

Rome, Italy CNN  —

A five-year dig into the side of Rome’s Palatine Hill yielded treasure last week when archaeologists discovered a deluxe banquet room dating from around the first or second century BC, featuring a sizable, intact and brightly colored wall mosaic.

Estimated to be around 2,300 years old, the work is part of a larger aristocratic mansion, located near the Roman Forum, that has been under excavation since 2018.

Almost five meters long (16.4 ft) and featuring depictions of vines, lotus leaves, tridents, trumpets, helmets and mythological marine creatures, the mosaic scene was painstakingly created using mother of pearl, shells, corals, shards of precious glass and flecks of marble. The piece is framed by polychrome crystals, spongy travertine, and exotic, ancient Egyptian blue tiles.

What makes this discovery “unmatched,” said archaeologist Alfonsina Russo, head of the Colosseum Archaeological Park in charge of the site, is not only the incredible conservation of the mosaic, but its decoration which also features celebratory scenes of naval and land battles likely funded — and won — by an extremely wealthy aristocratic patron who commemorated the victories on their walls.

The intricacy of the mosaic’s depictions of victory have surprised the team working on the project. They show a coastal walled town with lookout towers and loggias — which Russo said could be an ideal or a real-life location — sitting atop a cliff designed with pieces of travertine rock. Scenes of sailing ships with raised sails also feature, alongside depictions of mythical sea monsters swallowing enemy fleets.

Archaeologists are trying to ascertain whether the delicate — and expensive, for the time — coral branches used in the display came from the Mediterranean or the Red Sea (the nearest and most common oceans used by Romans to extract materials). A rare bluish glass paste also featured in the design likely came from the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria, the team believe.

“This banquet hall, which measures 25 square meters (270 square foot), is just one space within a ‘domus’ (the Latin word for house) spread on several floors,” Russo told CNN in an interview. “In ancient times, when powerful noble families inhabited the Palatine Hill, it was customary to use rich decorative elements as a symbol to show-off opulence and high social rank.”

The chamber, deemed a “jewel” by Russo, was an outdoor banquet hall overlooking a garden, likely used during summer to entertain guests.

Such an elaborate space would also have been used to impress guests with water games, which were very popular amongst nobility at the time. “We have found lead pipes embedded within the decorated walls, built to carry water inside basins or to make fountains spout to create water games,” said Russo.

Marco Rossi, professor of Roman antiquities and head of the mosaic lab at Rome’s Università degli Studi di Roma Tre pointed out that these summer banquet rooms were not only somewhere that hosts and guests would go to relax but also used by the mansion owner as a signifier of their wealth and rank.

“Mosaics are usually found on floors, but this runs across the entire front wall and has been incredibly well-preserved,” said Rossi of the piece. “It’s not been ruined by the weight of debris — as can happen to some mosaics on the ground — and despite being delicate, it hasn’t so much as chipped across the centuries.”

The discovery of an entire wall mosaic is extremely rare, Rossi added, not least because these pieces are more delicate than those for the floor which were designed to be walked upon and withstand pressure.

The location of the grand home has also helped the wall’s preservation, scientists believe. Positioned on the side of Rome’s famous Palatine Hill and subsequently covered over by centuries of mud and earth as the land has moved, the structure and treasures within it have been protected from the air and light by layers of ground.

While this new discovery still has a lot of secrets to reveal — why the property was abandoned and how long ago, for example — Russo believes there is one mystery archaeologists could perhaps solve: The identity of its owner, likely a Roman senator.

“The person was so rich they could afford to import such precious elements from across the empire to decorate this mansion,” Russo said. “We have found nothing so far to shed light on their identity, but we believe more research might enable us to pinpoint the noble family.”

Russo and her team aim to open the space to the public in early January. “We (will) continue to dig the other layers and areas of this evocative place (to try to discover more),” she said. “It is really an incredible display of Roman luxury.”

Sunny and humid this morning; temp is only 66 but it feels warmer with the humidity. Maybe the hummers are stocking up for their migration, altho it’s a bit early yet.

  2. this is just absurd and disgusting!! FEMA is not about immigration. saying it is doesn’t make it so. funneling taxpayer monies to liberal states (for the bureaucratic JOBS this creates to “manage” the programs) only to have those immigrants leech into other states who do not get the fancy jobs and $$ to provide for them is THEFT! this is NOT FEMA’S PURPOSE!
    article

Beginning in 2023, cities around the U.S. began to receive funds from FEMA to alleviate the orchestrated, growing, and unaffordable financial burden on taxpayers in regards to the invasion of third world migrants coming for welfare—it’s called the “Shelter and Services Program” and it’s costing us an arm and a leg.

For FY 2023, the program cost $363.8 million; just one year later, the invoice had nearly doubled, shooting up to $650 million. Now, government officials, from the local levels to Washington D.C.’s are asking for as much as three billion dollars for FY 2025. Here’s the story, from a report by Tom Gantert at The Center Square:

FEMA program for migrants grows along with border crisis

FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program is another indicator of the growing impact of the arrival of millions of foreign nationals in the U.S. since President Joe Biden took office.

The program provides grants to communities for the expenses they will incur for handling migrants. There were 14 states, including Washington D.C., that received the first tranche of money in fiscal year 2023.

The funding for the program has increased from $363.8 million in fiscal year 2023 to $650 million in fiscal year 2024. Now, city officials and politicians are asking it be funded by as much as $3 billion.

Another way of looking at the one-year increase? A 725% surge. If that kept up for 2026, we’re looking at $21.7 billion. 2027? $157.1 billion. Obviously, this is not only unsustainable, it’s disgusting.

FEMA is marketed as the federal government’s “disaster relief” agency, but taxpayers from across the nation are gouged, and further indebted, to cover the living expenses of millions of people who have absolutely no right to be in our nation. The real disaster relief we need is a closed border, and a mass deportation of every last illegal alien living, working, or occupying space in this nation. Mass migration from the third world to the first world never benefits the host nation, it destroys it.

Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution defines “treason” as this:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.

Seems like FEMA officials are giving “aid” and “comfort” to enemies of the United States—how else do you describe violent Latin gangs, Mexican cartels, Islamist jihadis, and Chinese communists?

Looks like we’ve got yet another federal agency that needs to be completely dismantled and parceled out, back to the states of course.

  3. Hmmmm…..glad it’s not an issue for me any more.

Just The News: “A recently released study finds over a dozen toxic chemicals in tampons, which puts users at potential risk for harmful metal exposure. The study by University of California, Berkley researchers was published July 3 and found 16 such chemicals including arsenic, cadmium and lead.

Potentially millions of women each month use tampons from several brands, according to a summary of the study, which found 52–86% of people who menstruate in the U.S. use cotton or rayon tampons.

“Our findings point towards the need for regulations requiring the testing of metals in tampons by manufacturers,” the researchers said in the conclusion of their nine-page study.

    UC Study.pdf

“Tampons are of particular concern as a potential source of exposure to chemicals, including metals, because the skin of the vagina has a higher potential for chemical absorption than skin elsewhere on the body,” the team of nine researchers also said.

They also concluded the metals found could increase the risk of cancer, dementia, infertility and other issues. “Although toxic metals are ubiquitous and we are exposed to low levels at any given time, our study clearly shows that metals are also present in menstrual products and that women might be at higher risk for exposure using these products,” said study co-author Kathrin Schilling.

The study analyzed organic and non-organic tampons, used to absorb menstrual blood in the vagina, from the United State and United Kingdom. The researchers also said that there is no requirement to test tampons for chemical contaminants and that the Food and Drug Administration recommends only that tampons not contain two dioxin compounds or pesticide residues.

“Despite this large potential for public health concern, very little research has been done to measure chemicals in tampons,” said UC Berkeley researcher and lead author Jenni A. Shearston.

The FDA responded Tuesday to the study, saying it is under agency review.

“All studies have limitations,” said agency spokeswoman Amanda Hils. “While the chemical method used indicates these metals are present in the tampons tested in the laboratory, the study does not assess whether any metals are released from tampons when used in the body.

“It also does not address whether any metal, if released, can be absorbed into the vaginal lining or, subsequently into the bloodstream. We plan to evaluate the study closely, and take any action warranted to safeguard the health of consumers who use these products.”

  5. EXCERPT: “Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is leading a 23-state coalition of attorneys general opposing another Biden administration regulation on home appliances, this time on washing machines.

They did so as the U.S. House is poised to vote on two bills this week that would restrict Biden administration regulations on dishwashers and refrigerators, among other household appliances. Republicans say the regulations will only further drive up costs and make them less affordable than they already are, The Center Square reported. House Democrats have been encouraged to vote against the bills, arguing they are a political ploy.

A new U.S. Department of Energy regulation on washing machines is the “latest overreach into the livelihoods of middle-class Americans,” Moody said. The administration is now “weaseling its way into laundry rooms in an attempt to further its radical energy policies by implementing harmful and costly standards on washing machines.”

The AG coalition sent a letter to DOE Secretary Jennifer Granholm, asking her to abandon a new rule the DOE promulgated or “proceed with notice and comment rulemaking” before enacting it…..”

  6. Just The News: “A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that demonstrators cannot march or protest through a security zone that surrounds the Republican National Convention next week. GOP leaders will gather in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 to July 18, for the national convention where former President Donald Trump will officially become the Republican nominee for president.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Coalition to March on the RNC 2024 filed a lawsuit against the city last month, claiming the security perimeter violates their rights to free speech because it does not bring them close enough to the Republican leaders, the Associated Press reported. The protesters have asked the judge to establish a parade route for them that would put them within view of the convention center.

U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig said the First Amendment does give them the right to protest, but that it “does not allow them to protest or parade in any way they choose.” He also claimed the security perimeter around the Fiserv Forum, where the convention will be held, makes sense for the event.

“The vast majority of the resulting security plan is a reasonable and valid time, place, and manner regulation on speech,” Ludwig ruled.

Demonstrators are allowed to protest in designated areas and along an established protest route that are located approximately five blocks from the convention center. The security perimeter blocks public access to the event, but attendees will be given credentials.

Ludwig did rule against the city on one issue related to the convention, by determining that the city overstepped when approving speaker and demonstration applications based on the applicant’s criminal history.”

  7. Just The News: “Legislation that partly dismantles “squatters rights” in Pennsylvania will head to the governor’s desk after a brief stumbling block.

Under the soon-to-be law, squatters could face a defiant trespass charge if they don’t vacate a property after being told to do so by the owner. Doing so safeguards homes and investments quickly and effectively without wading through needless red tape, said prime sponsor Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-Erie.

He said the “escalating problem … strikes at the heart of justice and fairness” and can pose safety threats. One such incident in his district, Laughlin said, saw two homes razed and two more damaged from a fire that squatters started.

“This is one example of the personal and emotional ordeal that countless families and individuals face when they find their homes and investments under siege,” he said. “Under our current legal framework, too many property owners are exposed, struggling against a system that doesn’t fully shield their rights or protect their homes.”

The Senate unanimously passed the bill on June 12 and the House followed suit on Tuesday – even though some lawmakers said it didn’t go far enough to protect homeowners.

Rep. Donna Scheuren, R-Gilbertsville, said on the chamber floor that she’d vote for the bill, despite its exclusion of her amendment to give law enforcement more authority to evict squatters on the spot.

“This issue seems to infuriate every rational person across our commonwealth and as legislators, I feel its our duty to continue to work on common sense solutions that put our homeowners rights before the criminals,” she said.”

  8. JMO, but this is why ALL religion should be kept out of public schools. If you want a religious education for your child, enroll your child in a religious school! You cannot discriminate against particular “religions,” whether you think it’s a “valid” religion or not.

Just The News: “Satanists in Florida have volunteered to serve as school counselors after GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation permitting religious chaplains to serve in those roles in public schools due to a shortage of personnel.

DeSantis signed the legislation in April, at which time he indicated that Satanism was not a legitimate religion and its adherents would not be permitted to fill such vacancies under the law.

“Nothing in the text of the bill serves to exclude us, and no credible interpretation of the First Amendment could,” a cofounder for The Satanic Temple said in a statement to The Hill. “Should a school district now choose to have chaplains, they should expect Satanists to participate as well.”

A spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves, criticized the governor’s approach. “Either entirely ignorant of the most basic fundamentals of constitutional law, or too incompetent to care, DeSantis fails to recognize that it is not the place of the government to confer unique rights to one religious identity while denying them to another,” Greaves said.

DeSantis previously indicated that Florida would not play “games” and “[w]e’re going to be using common sense.” Many school districts said they would not implement the plan when DeSantis signed the bill, according to the Tampa Bay Times.”

      1. ALL religion should be kept out of public schools. This actually makes my point: that any group can claim to be a “religion” and for those people in the group, that may be valid in their eyes.

  9. Just The News: “Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines issued a warning on Wednesday about “concerning Iranian activity” in the U.S. related to protests against the war in Gaza. “In recent weeks, Iranian government actors have sought to opportunistically take advantage of ongoing protests regarding the war in Gaza, using a playbook we’ve seen other actors use over the years,” Haines said in a public statement released on Wednesday.

“We have observed actors tied to Iran’s government posing as activists online, seeking to encourage protests, and even providing financial support to protesters,” she added.

Haines noted that while the “freedom to express diverse views, when done peacefully, is essential to our democracy,” it is also “important to warn of foreign actors who seek to exploit our debate for their own purposes.”

Haines said some Americans “who are being targeted by this Iranian campaign may not be aware that they are interacting with or receiving support from a foreign government.”

Haines shared advice for the general public regarding influence efforts conducted by Iran. “We urge all Americans to remain vigilant as they engage online with accounts and actors they do not personally know,” she said.”

Our Take: (Here we have a Christian leader bestowing a Christian accolade to a Hindu leader.)

People forget how the fateful day of the Sword Dance (May 20, 2017) began. Trump received Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honor—the gilded Collar of the Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud—from King Salman.

(Here we have a Muslim leader bestowing a Muslim accolade to a Christian leader.)

The Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud was established on March 20, 1971, by King Faisal, half-brother of the current king. We know now that ten years before—in 1961—a secret meeting was held between President JFK and then-Crown Prince Faisal. JFK conveyed to the Crown Prince the idea that investing the Royal Family’s wealth in his people, and thus providing the conditions for their individual prosperity, would not only create a middle class, but would build Saudi Arabia up as a great world power—which would also secure the bonds of trust between the people and the House of Saud.

JFK instilled in the mind of Faisal that the Saudi Royal Family could only be truly great if the people of their Kingdom were also great, and three years later, when Faisal became king, he honored the conversation he had with the late president by implementing a 10-point plan of social reforms that included the abolition of slavery and universal healthcare funded by the Royal Family. (Yes, the president who fought against communism encouraged socialism in a country with very unique circumstances.)

King Faisal was assassinated in 1975, most likely by the same people who assassinated JFK twelve years prior.

The current Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, is the spiritual successor of Faisal, just as President Donald Trump is the spiritual successor of JFK. Both men seek prosperity and greatness for their people, and both men are deeply despised by the same forces that opposed their predecessors.” — GhostofBasedPatrickHenry

EXCERPT: “Just over a year ago we told you about Chanda Creasy, a courageous yoga coach, who had previously managed to work with militants in Africa, making her way up to the position of special assistant to CIA director on global operations.

First of all, it is worth saying that the CIA began its expansion in Somalia around 1960s, using an extensive set of tools of political influence, such as kidnapping, operating black sites, promoting Somali politicians and funding warlords. Specifically, the last point was seen as a way to avoid re-sending American troops after the Black Hawk Down incident….”

It appears there was never any consideration before-the-fact for the ‘climate effects’ on this boondoggle.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that the pier, which has had to be moved repeatedly to avoid bad weather, would be reconnected to the Gaza coastline on Wednesday but would operate for just the next few days before being disassembled by the US army and navy.

Over its two months in operation, about 8,800 metric tons of aid has been unloaded off the pier, about 500 truckloads, equivalent to a single day of deliveries before the war began.”

More than 128,000 newly licensed drivers were on Massachusetts roads in the past year, and officials linked the surge to the one-year anniversary of a law allowing illegal immigrants to apply for licenses.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles said Monday, July 8 it has issued 183,825 new learner’s permits and 128,079 new driver’s licenses since the so-called Work and Family Mobility Act took effect July 1, 2023.

Permit tests are now offered in 35 languages, and the Registry of Motor Vehicles said telephone and in-person help is available in more than 100 languages. To keep up with demand spurred by the driver’s-licenses law, the Registry said it hired 250 new employees, extended weekday service hours and offered appointments on Saturdays, and opened additional road test locations in Holyoke, Revere, Cambridge, Franklin, Worcester, and Brockton.
