Weird Fruits: Jackfruit

From: theclevelandclinic.org website:

Fruit as a meat substitute? Yep, when it’s jackfruit. This massive tree fruit flips its flavor between sweet and savory, depending on how ripe it is. So, is jackfruit good for you? Yes! Jackfruit benefits include being heart-healthy, fighting inflammation and promoting wound healing. Registered dietitian Gillian Culbertson, RD, explains the health benefits of jackfruit and how to add it to your diet.

What is jackfruit?

The scientific name for jackfruit is Artocarpus heterophyllus. Jackfruit is a tropical tree fruit grown in Asia, Africa and South America. It belongs to the same plant family as figs and mulberries. Under its thick, bumpy green rind is a stringy yellow flesh that you can eat raw or cooked in a variety of dishes. (Its seeds are also edible.) Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, weighing up to 40 pounds or more. Luckily, you don’t need to throw this massive fruit into your shopping cart. Some health food stores carry peeled and cut jackfruit portions in pouches or cans, ready to cook or eat.

But for some people, jackfruit isn’t safe to eat.

“If you have a latex or birch pollen allergy, avoid jackfruit,” warns Culbertson. “Both of these allergies can have a cross-reaction with jackfruit.” Jackfruit also has a lot of potassium, which can be harmful to people who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) or acute kidney failure. People with these conditions can develop hyperkalemia if they eat high amounts of potassium. Hyperkalemia is a buildup of potassium in the blood that can cause weakness, paralysis and heart attack.

Is jackfruit healthy?

Like many fruits, jackfruit contains some fiber for healthy digestion and very little fat. A 100-gram portion of jackfruit has:

95 calories.

2 grams of protein.

0.6 grams of fat.

3 grams of fiber.

Jackfruit also contains vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that have health benefits. It’s a good source of:

Vitamin C.

Pyridoxine (vitamin B6).

Niacin (vitamin B3).

Riboflavin (vitamin B2).

Folic acid (vitamin B9).

Calcium.

Magnesium.

Potassium.

Phosphorus.

Jackfruit health benefits

In addition to being a great meat alternative (more on that below!) and full of essential vitamins, there’s a lot more this might fruit can do. Let’s talk about the benefits of jackfruit.

It can be part of a heart-healthy diet

Research shows that eating jackfruit can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease. “The combination of potassium, fiber and antioxidants can benefit heart health,” Culbertson says. Potassium combats the negative effects of sodium on your blood pressure, while fiber contributes to lowering your cholesterol levels.

It may help fight inflammation

Jackfruit is high in vitamin C, which studies show can help prevent inflammation. “Research also shows that jackfruit also contains flavonoids and lignans, plant compounds that may help fight inflammation,” Culbertson notes. All these antioxidants found in jackfruit protect your cells from inflammation and oxidative stress, which can lead to chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes.

It may help control blood sugar levels

While more research is needed to fully understand this potential benefit, it’s believed that jackfruit can help manage your blood sugar. First, jackfruit has a low glycemic index (GI) score, which means eating it shouldn’t affect your blood glucose levels like other foods with higher scores. Second, a study shows that its leaf may help lower fasting blood sugar levels. Another study shows that jackfruit’s bark may prevent fats and complex carbohydrates from breaking down into sugar. Both pieces of research could be beneficial for managing diabetes.

It may promote wound healing

Research shows that extract from the jackfruit’s leaf may promote wound healing, while other studies show that its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties can contribute to healthy skin. “Ancient people used jackfruit as medicine,” says Culbertson. “In folk medicine, where jackfruit is grown, people have used it for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties.”

What does jackfruit taste like?

When jackfruit is unripe, it has a neutral flavor that pairs well with savory dishes. You can use unripe jackfruit in vegetarian curry and in place of tofu or chickpeas. But jackfruit’s biggest claim to fame is its ability to imitate barbecue meat. “Jackfruit’s stringy texture makes it a good vegan substitute for pulled pork or chicken,” Culbertson says. “It has under 3 grams of protein per cup, making it much lower in protein than meat. Keep that in mind as you consider the protein sources in your diet.” Look for packages that label jackfruit as “young” or “packed in brine.” These words indicate that it’s unripe and suitable as a meat substitute.

Ripe jackfruit has a sweet, tropical fruit flavor that works well as a snack or added to sweet dishes. When ripe, it tastes like other tropical fruits like bananas, mangos or pineapples. If you’re trying ripe jackfruit, use it like you would any other tropical fruit. Serve it as a healthy dessert or add it to a smoothie. With its abundant vitamins and minerals, jackfruit can be a healthy addition to your diet. Culbertson says, “Many people enjoy jackfruit as a meat substitute, whether they’re vegan or not. Many Americans already tend to eat too much meat, so a healthy meat substitute is always worth a try.”

    1. Morning, Pat! Clear and sunny here and only 59 at the moment. Orioles are still on the jelly here – saw 4 at one time out there yesterday. But they aren’t as constant thru the day now.

As the middle of summer arrives in Pennsylvania, Baltimore Orioles & Orchard Orioles are getting ready to start their migration back south to Central America, northern South America, and even Florida.

      ————–

Most seasons, I put my oriole feeders away in July because the birds have stopped using them! My recommendation is to observe your feeding station regularly, so you know when the orioles have stopped visiting for the year.”

        1. Your feeders are closer so it’s a little easer for you to refill it quickly. I’m down to refilling mine once a day now – I just went out to check and it was almost totally empty! Refill time! LOL

A Bugatti car, a first lady and the fake stories aimed at Americans

A network of Russia-based websites masquerading as local American newspapers is pumping out fake stories as part of an AI-powered operation that is increasingly targeting the US election, a BBC investigation can reveal.

A former Florida police officer who relocated to Moscow is one of the key figures behind it.

The following would have been a bombshell report – if it were true.

Olena Zelenska, the first lady of Ukraine, allegedly bought a rare Bugatti Tourbillon sports car for 4.5m euros ($4.8m; £3.8m) while visiting Paris for D-Day commemorations in June. The source of the funds was supposedly American military aid money.

The story appeared on an obscure French website just days ago – and was swiftly debunked.

Experts pointed out strange anomalies on the invoice posted online. A whistleblower cited in the story appeared only in an oddly edited video that may have been artificially created. Bugatti issued a sharp denial, calling it “fake news”, and its Paris dealership threatened legal action against the people behind the false story.

But before the truth could even get its shoes on, the lie had gone viral. Influencers had already picked up the false story and spread it widely.

One X user, the pro-Russia, pro-Donald Trump activist Jackson Hinkle, posted a link seen by more than 6.5m people. Several other accounts spread the story to millions more X users – at least 12m in total, according to the site’s metrics.

It was a fake story, on a fake news website, designed to spread widely online, with its origins in a Russia-based disinformation operation BBC Verify first revealed last year – at which point the operation appeared to be trying to undermine Ukraine’s government.

…Our latest investigation, carried out over more than six months and involving the examination of hundreds of articles across dozens of websites, found that the operation has a new target – American voters.

Dozens of bogus stories tracked by the BBC appear aimed at influencing US voters and sowing distrust ahead of November’s election. Some have been roundly ignored but others have been shared by influencers and members of the US Congress.

Much more at the link. They’re using AI. They’re making up American-sounding names of newspapers like “The Houston Post.” They’re making up names of journalists and might even be using photos of real journalists. This is another thing to be aware of in the fight against election interference.

  3. Good morning, Pat and Filly,

Never seen or heard of Jackfruit. The name doesn’t make me want to try it, but I would if it’s ripe.

I’m home for a couple of days, after the caregiver’s vacation week, to do the yard in which the grass is overgrown and needs mowing bad.

Also have to get my car serviced and mail off a sewing machine that I bought to keep at home. When I plugged it in, it didn’t work. The needle didn’t move up and down, not even when I turned the wheel. It had a brittle cord and was probably stored in a non-climate controlled attic, garage, not cleaned, oiled nor used for a long while. I believe the seller was dishonest and sent it in a bashed box with a hole in it, poorly packed with very little paper and bubble wrap, in order to try to get a claim from the USPS. She claims it was fine and damaged in shipping. She wanted eBay to furnish the return label and opened up a case for eBay to adjudicate. eBay decided in my favor after reading the correspondence.

Hope you all have a good day, good weather, good thoughts and energy and many blessings today!

  4. CA reparations: first we have to grow government. (this means we create ANOTHER agency and staff if with black people at high salaries–so these people get theirs first.) then we create freebies to poc like including FOOD in healthcare. we want inmates to receive minimum wage (in CA that’s what? $20 an hour now?) for any inmate job they do and some unconstitutional stuff along the way too.

    FTA

This bill would create the California American Freedmen Affairs Agency and its Genealogy Office and Office of Legal Affairs to find out which individuals are descended from African American individuals who were enslaved and thus qualify for reparations, and would cost an estimated $3-5 million per year to establish and operate the agency at the outset. The bill would direct CAFA to implement the state’s reparations task force’s recommendations, which included paying eligible black residents of California could up to $1.2 million, according to CalMatters.

    snip

At the low end, reparations bills with finite costs add up to approximately $4.3 million per year. However, with some potential programs such as spending savings from prison capacity reductions on gun violence reduction programs or making food a public health benefit for millions of Californians having unknown cost estimates ranging from hundreds of millions to tens of billions of dollars per year, the combined cost of these proposed programs — if adopted — would significantly expand state financial obligations.

    snip

AB 1815, a no-cost bill which would add hairstyles including “braids, locs, and twists” to racial anti-discrimination protections, passed the Assembly and is in the Senate.

SB 3089, another no-cost bill, would have the state issue an apology for harms to African Americans. This bill passed the Assembly and is in the Senate.

ACA 8 is a constitutional amendment that would abolish involuntary servitude in prisons, but would not prevent prisons from offering credits to individuals who voluntarily take work assignments. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says this measure could come with significant costs if “courts require incarcerated individuals to be paid minimum wage for work performed in prison.” This bill passed and requires approval from the majority of voters in the November election.

          1. We used to make a summer trip to the mall in Lincoln every year – Mom got her supplies she needed for her 1-2 grade kids and when I was REALLY lucky, I got the “good” kind of colored pencils instead of the cheap ones. Then we would also eat at one of the fancier restaurants – it was our major “outing” of the summer!

              1. We all looked forward to it every summer. We had a Woolworth’s in Norfolk – in fact, at one time, my Grandma worked behind the lunch counter there. Ah, those were good years, I gotta say – for the most part anyway.

Grandma also worked at the truck stop just east of Norfolk, on the highway to Omaha, and at the sales barn. She was one hell of a cook! People came to the sales barn just to eat! My Sis told me one time, she stopped at a truck stop somewhere in Nevada, I think it was, and got to talking with some other truckers. They got onto the subject of good places to eat at truck stops. One of them happened to mention the one where Grandma worked as having THE best TS food he’d ever had.

  6. Well, I finally got the rebate! Have I said lately how much I hate the VA? I just want a refill on the inhalers they sent me about 5 years ago – there were 6 and I just now used the last one. Needless to say, I don’t use them often. But, since it was prescribed via a doctor outside the VA (i.e., community care), they can’t do anything for me. I don’t even remember which doctor prescribed it, I saw soooo many during that timeframe!!! SMH – so now, if I want to go thru my new VA doctor in Norfolk, I have no doubt they will require an in-person visit first…..grrrrr……

  9. Just The News: “Climate activists often paint “big oil” as a group of powerful corporations spending billions of dollars to spread a message that protects and advances their industry, while those with a countering message paint themselves as humble grassroots underdogs.

The data gives that narrative the lie. A Just the News analysis of 2021 tax documents of major anti-fossil fuel environmental and climate nonprofits shows that for every dollar that was received by oil and gas industry groups and climate-skeptical conservative and libertarian nonprofits, $9.60 went to nonprofits who fight against the use of oil, gas and coal.

“The media and activist groups would like you to think the only reason people use oil is because of really good advertising and lobbying by oil companies, neither of which is true. Our advertising is lame and our advocacy is always outspent and certainly outnumbered,” Tim Stewart, president of the U.S. Oil and Gas Association told Just the News…..”

    Italian pasta, anyone?

EXCERPT: “Some of the more obscure headlines from around the world can be the most informative. Let’s face it—what happens in some other nation may already be happening in our own.

So, when the above headline caught my eye, it felt like time to dig a little deeper.

Sixteen species of insects, including crickets, locusts and silkworms, have been approved as food in Singapore, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on Monday.

“With immediate effect, [the] SFA will allow the import of insects and insect products belonging to species that have been assessed to be of low regulatory concern,” the agency said in a circular addressed to processed food and animal feed traders.

“These insects and insect products can be used for human consumption or as animal feed for food-producing animals.”

The SFA first conducted a public consultation on the regulation of insects and insect products in end-2022.

In April last year, the agency said that 16 species of insects would receive the green light for consumption in the second half of 2023, but the decision was pushed back.

Earlier this year, the SFA, said it was finalising the implementation details and aimed to introduce a regulatory framework in the first half of this year.

In late June, sources such as restaurants and potential farms said that the approval was imminent (Source: SCMP).

The article then goes on to mention that “The farming of insects for human food and for animal feed has been promoted by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization for their benefits as a sustainable form of protein.”

It turns out that the UN Food and Agricultural Organization has been working on using insects for food since 2003…..

  12. Just The News: “The Republican National Committee on Monday moved one step away from finalizing its 2024 election platform to back Donald Trump’s bid to return to the White House, placing a strong emphasis on the issues of border security and inflation that voters have said are top of mind while adapting its stance on abortion for the first time in four decades to recognize the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

“Only President Trump can restore our economy, restore our Southern Border, and restore America’s standing in the world,” RNC Chairman Michael Whatley and RNC Co-Chair Lara Trump said in a statement.

Trump and RNC Chairman Michael Whatley jointly announced the party’s platform committee had approved a 20-plank platform leading with promises to “seal the border and stop the migrant invasion,” “carry out the largest deportation operation in history,” and “end inflation and make America affordable again.”

The summary sent out by Trump offered top lines and did not include the detailed positions under each plank. The summary made no mention of abortion, but sources with direct knowledge of the platform told Just the News that the complete document dropped the GOP’s long held plank pushing for a federal right to life law because the Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that abortion was a state’s right issue.

Instead, the new Trump-inspired platform argues the 14th Amendment guarantees every human the right to life and permits states to pass law protecting the right to life.

“We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights,” the draft approved by the platform committee reads. That language was confirmed by three sources.

The platform also calls for a national ban on late-term abortions, an issue Democrats have struggled to defend. Trump appointed three judges to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn the constitutional right to abortion set in the Roe v. Wade precedent. He has since called for leaving the matter to the states.

During the debate, Trump expressed support for exceptions to abortion bans in the cases of rape, incest, and threats to the life of the mother.

“I believe the exceptions. I am a person that believes, and frankly, I think it’s important to believe in the exceptions,” he said at the time. “Some people, you have to follow your heart. Some people don’t believe in that, but I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. I think it’s very important.”

As an ICE officer, how do you feel that this provision was left in the bill?
CRANE: It disgusts me. Violent street gangs were literally able to lobby Sen. Rubio and the Gang of Eight more effectively than law enforcement, they had more influence on the bill than we did. Gangs were able to get provisions in the law to protect themselves. It’s absolutely insane. What on earth are our lawmakers thinking? I think it’s this type of utterly stupid lawmaking that has caused most Americans to lose faith in Congress.
CRANE: Law enforcement was treated like absolute trash. Republicans and Democrats in the Gang of Eight saw law enforcement as the enemy.
We were the only ones really positioned to tell America that their bill was one big lie that wouldn’t fix our immigration problems but make them worse.
They did everything they could to keep us out of the picture and silent. Special interests on the other hand were treated like kings. It was all about money.
If we had the money, like the Chamber of Commerce and Mark Zuckerberg, we could buy America an immigration law that put the safety of both the American public and immigrants first, but we don’t. So it looks like America will have to settle for the open borders and cheap labor plan the Chamber of Commerce is buying.

WOW 🚨 The 2024 Election Is Going To Be SO RIGGED

American Business Owner has illegal migrant come to him for a job, he says the “Illegal Immigrant has Social Security Card and Drivers License with Work ID in 4 months” of entering America

“So yesterday, I ran into somebody that I haven’t seen in a while. I haven’t seen this guy for months. He’s been here for about five months in the United States, six months, something like that. And he says, hey, I’m looking for work. And I said, well, I can’t hire you, man. I got to hire legitimate people or whatever.

And he was like, No, no, no, I’m legitimate now. And he’s broken English kind of bits and pieces together and he pulls his ID and stuff out of his pocket. He says, I’ve got social security card now and I got workers ID and permit for working everything all legit. Stamp, city stamping, specialized social security envelope. And I said, let’s go inside real quick. I need a translator.

I have a couple of my guys, they speak Spanish and I’m talking to them and I says, so, where are we at with time frame wise? How long did it take you to get your social security card and your workers permit?

He said maybe three and a half, four months. Finished in my hand. This dude got his freaking work permit and social security card, came here illegally, got documented, got on the buses from Texas to Chicago, got in process here in Chicago, found an apartment building within the first week in Efficiency apartment, moved into the apartment building and has been working cash jobs under the table for the last four months until recently got his workers permit.

Now he’s working for a roofing company but they’re laid off right now. They’re laid off right now and he’s looking for work. And I said, I don’t necessarily need anybody right now, buddy. I’m sorry, I’ll have to pass. This shocks me, the fact that this guy can’t even speak English. Almost not a lick of English. Very broken, can barely understand, gotta have a translator around.

Luckily I speak enough Spanish to know what he’s saying and I’m like this is absolutely crazy.

Four months already has a driver’s license, insurance, he bought like a 2012-2011 Ford Focus.

    — Now within four months this guy’s got a social security card, he’s got his workers identification card for working, he’s got a driver’s license, he’s got insurance, he just bought a car, all in four months. And it has an efficiency apartment that he pays $500 a month for with government assistance.

That’s f**ked up, man. We have people literally trying to do everything they’ve been waiting for years that still don’t have what this guy has in four months. That’s how fucked up our government is. That’s how much they care about the illegal migrants more than they care about their own people.

    — It’s messed up man. It’s really really really messed up that they would do this for people that are not even from this country. They didn’t help build this country. They didn’t help contribute to this country and they just walk right in like they do and just get handed IDs, Social Security card, just get them on the payroll and stuff. Let’s just let’s just let’s just do it for them. Let’s get them let’s get them set but not take care of our own people that are on the streets. It’s messed up.”

Just when you think these people couldn’t get any sicker. It’s “Be Kind to LGBTQ+, BLack and Brown Pedophile Day”

SB1414 is a proposal to make it a felony to purchase chiIdren for s*x in California.

Woke activist groups OPPOSE this bill by complaining that it will harm the LGBTQ community and people or color.

Dems already watered down the bill. pic.twitter.com/RqAsaHAInW
