The black-backed dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca), also known as the three-toed kingfisher, is a pocket-sized bird in the family Alcedinidae. It was formerly considered as conspecific with the rufous-backed dwarf kingfisher and together the species complex was known by the English name “oriental dwarf kingfisher”.

This tropical kingfisher is a partial migrant that is endemic to parts of the Indian Subcontinent and Mainland Southeast Asia. It resides in lowland forests, typically near streams or ponds, where it feeds upon insects, spiders, worms, crabs, fish, frogs, and lizards. It is easily distinguishable from other birds in its range due to its red bill, yellow-orange underparts, lilac-rufous upperparts, and blue-black back.

The black-backed dwarf kingfisher is one of the smallest known kingfisher species. It is only slightly larger than a medium-sized hummingbird and measures 4.9–5.5 inches in length (including bill and tail). Females typically weigh 14-16g and males 14-21.5g, making the males slightly larger. The two sexes are otherwise alike and sexual dimorphism is not present. Both males and females have a black spot on the forehead; blue and white patches on the side of the neck; a lilac-rufous crown, rump, and tail; a dark blue back and wings; a white chin and throat; pale yellow-orange underparts; a dark brown iris; and red legs, feet, and bill. Juveniles are duller and have less lilac coloring; a white chin, throat and belly; yellow-orange bill with pale tip; and blue scapulars and wing-coverts. This species of kingfisher has three toes, explaining why it is sometimes called the three-toed kingfisher, however, there are other kingfishers which also have three toes. The toe-count in these kingfisher species does not appear to be adaptive. The vocalization is a high pitched, shrill “tsriet-tsriet” or soft “tjie-tjie-tjie” in flight.

The black-backed dwarf kingfisher is a forest and wetland-dwelling species that is endemic to parts of the Indian subcontinent and Mainland Southeast Asia. The breeding range includes eastern Bangladesh, northeastern India, Myanmar, the extreme south of China, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. There is a disjunct population in the Western Ghats of western India and in Sri Lanka. During winter some birds migrate south to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.

It is most commonly found in deciduous and evergreen primary and secondary forests, but also in alluvial forests, mangroves, overgrown rubber gardens, or in dense aggregations of palms, bamboos, or shrubs. They tend to keep near forest streams and ponds, but their nests are often well away from water. They keep low to the ground and are known to perch and fly within 1-2m of the forest floor. Their preferred habitat is densely shaded forest lowlands near small streams or ponds. The lowlands they are present in typically do not exceed 1000-1300m in elevation.

Their diet consists primarily of insects, including mantises, grasshoppers, flies, water beetles, winged ants, mayflies; but also includes spiders; worms ; and small crabs, fish, frogs and lizards.

Black-backed dwarf kingfishers forage solitarily and perch in low vegetation or on rocks before flying out to capture prey from the ground or from among foliage. They can take spiders from their webs and catch insects in flight. They can also dive into water for prey at or just below the surface, without submerging themselves. Larger prey are typically brought back to a perch, where the bird will strike it repeatedly with its beak before swallowing.

Breeding

Egg laying occurs from July to September in southwest India, February to July in Sri Lanka, April to May in northeast India, March to July in peninsular Malaysia, March in Sumatra, and from December to May in Java. Nests are built in stream banks, road cuttings, terrestrial termitariums, or in soil near roots of a fallen tree, often well away from water. Together, the male and female excavate a horizontal tunnel that is 5.9–39.4 inches long, 1.5–1.8 inches in diameter, and ends in an unlined egg chamber. One pair dug 9.8 inches of their burrow, in sand, in about 40 minutes. The unlined chamber is 3.9–5.9 inches wide and 2.0–2.8 inches high. Both the tunnel and egg chamber are inclined upwards, which is thought to minimize water entry into the chamber and to help the flow of waste material out of the nest. The generation time is approximately 4.2 years. A typical clutch size is 3-7 eggs, averaging to around 5 eggs per clutch. The eggs are laid in the morning with a one day interval in between. Incubation begins after the final egg is laid and the incubation period lasts 17–18 days. Both the male and female incubate the eggs, however, the female has a larger role in the incubation period because she is responsible for incubating the eggs at night. The fledging period is 18–20 days and chicks typically fledge out in the morning.

    God’s infinite variety of fauna – birds, animals, fish, insects… and flora – trees, flowers, etc. is amazing.

    Same with human beings – I sat in the orthopedists office huge waiting room on Tuesday to see what was wrong with my foot (xrays revealed it was just old age, old injuries, but no broken bones) and marveled at the various size, shape, color, ages, outfits, hair styles, etc. of the patients waiting there.

    I’m back at Sally Q’s for the weekend.

    2. Hope All is well with your daughter, your ex, & of course yourself. Sorry you are having problems w/ your foot. My mom has a lingering numbness, following a surgery, in her one foot. It actually really impacts her balance & steadiness on her feet. Old age isn’t for wimps!

    about 60* this morning with heavy overcast skies–likely rain today. On our banana run yesterday, we were driving on our dirt road and hubby stopped the truck and started to back up–saying…whoa. on the side of the road–just making its way into the tall weeds was a black and gold diamond back rattlesnake! it was pretty, no doubt, but seeing the slightly golden rattle at the end gave me shivers. rattlesnakes are common up here–so much so they hold rattlesnake catching contests. they’re supposedly catch and release after the contest–but dang!
    this will be the third one we’ve seen since we’re up here. {{shudder}}

    1. Morning, Pat! Clear skies, not a cloud in sight, and 61 here this morning. I haven’t seen Wheezer for a couple of days but she’s eating during the night. The dish was half-full when I shut down last night but it’s almost gone this morning.

      Thankfully, I’ve never seen a rattlesnake IRL to my knowledge, altho there was one time as a child when I was on my weekly ramble with my 2 dogs that I thought I saw one. I didn’t spend all that much time in the mountains when I lived in CO – had I done so, I probably would have seen one or two, I expect.

      That’s a huge beak on that little bird – sure is pretty, tho!

    That Kingfisher is Absolutely Gorgeous!!! When we were Up North in Michigan over the Memorial Day holiday we were blessed to hear Baltimore Orioles singing most days. Finally one made an appearance in a small tree adjacent to the Cottage’s garden, which was quite a treat. Not Nearly as spectacular as your Kingfisher, it was still a treat for us all to see what for us is a pretty rare bird!

    Hey guys, I’d appreciate prayer for 3 situations in my family.

    My mom, who turned 84 last month, took a fall earlier this week & broke her upper arm. Thankfully she’s not in much pain w/ the arm in a sling before surgery scheduled tomorrow morning to pin/plate the bone where a part broke off. Hopefully it will be out-patient & if all goes well she might only need a splint/cast for 2 weeks. Dad’s really stepped up to care for her in different ways as both of them deal w/ various aging issues.

    Also my cousin’s son Matt is scheduled to receive a live-donor kidney transplant on June 10. He’s been dealing with a debilitating genetic condition for more than a decade & been on dialysis for a while now. He’s kind of an odd duck (as is that whole side of the family) but he loves the Lord & has some musical gifts which he contributes in worship leadership at his small Chicago area church. Please pray for him, his donor, their healing process, & that God would heal some breaches in that family. Matt’s sister is very unwell & has been caught up in those tranny delusions & other evils for like 20 years now.

    Finally, my latest granddaughter Finley, about 2 1/2 months old, is being evaluated for possible eye issues. She definitely has vision but has responded atypically to some testing so they are having a referral to a specialist to see if what’s happening can be identified & addressed. Her dad, my oldest son, is taking a wait & see approach about everything…but as a mom of a super complicated special needs child, my heart goes out to my kiddos as they navigate even just the shallows of possible medical complexity.

    Thank you for years of prayer ministry for many of my family members. Blessings!

    Today is our 32nd wedding anniversary. God has been so faithful to sustain us through many trials. Michael is the Only person in his extended family for several generations to maintain an intact marriage–a huge testimony to our faith foundation & his character!

    A refugee from Rwanda has been arrested for threatening to “shoot 1000 students” at a high school in Indiana, according to reports.

    Merci Habimana, 18, was taken into custody last week and charged with “intimidation with threat of a forcible felony” after he sent messages to Brownsburg High School (BHS) expressing an intention to kill pupils and police officers, court documents obtained by local media indicate.

    Habimana was enrolled at BHS at the time of his apprehension, which came after a slew of prior run-ins with law enforcement, including a recent incident for which he was already facing a felony charge.

    On May 28, an anonymous user posted a comment on an Instagram account associated with the high school, stating, “I wanna kill three of them see u. Fc bhs I hate you all maybe 1 day in dis week I wish to shoot 1000 students before they going in summer break see you gloom Sunday.”

    School police notified the Brownsburg Police Department (BPD) and investigators tracked the Instagram account and associated phone number to Habimana.

    Authorities learned Habimana’s “home language is Swahili – Tanzania and
    is a Rwandan refugee,” a probable cause affidavit states.

    Habimana was taken into custody and brought for questioning at BPD headquarters.

    “Merci said that two days ago, May 28, 2024 he was told the by the principal at Brownsburg High School that he would be held back as a Junior and would not graduate with the class of 2025. Merci admitted to being angry and upset over this,” the affidavit states.

    The Rwandan reportedly admitted to writing the threatening comment but claimed he had no intentions of inflicting harm.

    He was booked into Hendricks County Jail and ordered held until Wednesday afternoon, at which time he can post $1,000 cash bond.

    Habimana was previously arrested on May 20 after BPD officers allegedly found him passed out drunk inside a parked car near the apartment complex where he reportedly resides with his parents.

    Habimana reportedly threatened an officer and his family while resisting arrest.

    “He stated when he got out he was going to find us. At one point I believed to hear him say he was going to kill me but due to his accent it was hard to understand. He also stated he would grab my gun,” the officer wrote.

    The Rwandan was charged with felony intimidation and minor alcohol consumption and booked into Hendricks County Jail.

    “Court documents show that, in addition to the police intimidation arrest, Habimana has been a part of several BPD runs between December 2023 and May 2024,” Fox 59 reports.

    “One of the runs for a simple assault listed Habimana as an involved party and stated he was a sophomore at BHS.”

    Investigations and legal proceedings in both recent cases are ongoing.

Israeli political marketing firm Stoic was contracted to run the operation by Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs in the wake of Hamas‘s October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks against the Jewish state.

    With a budget of an estimated $2 million, Stoic was tasked with promoting support in the U.S. for Israeli military actions in Gaza aimed at eliminating Hamas. The operation, which remains active, deployed hundreds of fake accounts on the social media platforms X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, posing as Americans and pushing pro-Israel messaging. These fake social media accounts primarily focused on flooding the replies of U.S. lawmakers. Additionally, black lawmakers saw the highest degree of engagement from the accounts. The National Pulse reported in April on a similar “spamouflage” operation run by the Chinese government.

    FAKE NEWS & ANARCHISTS.

    The Fake Reporter, an Israeli disinformation watchdog, first exposed the influence operation in March. However, according to a June 5 report released by the watchdog group, the operation went far beyond attempting to influence U.S. politics through social media posts. The report reveals an extensive network of social media accounts and decoy websites pushing pro-Israeli, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian messaging. Each website appears tailored to appeal to a specific political ideology, including far-left anarchists.

    While both Instagram and Facebook say they’ve shut down the operation on their platforms, it appears to remain active on X. However, analysis by the Fake Report suggests that despite Stoic’s $2 million budget, the Israeli influence operation has had little impact—impeded by its sloppy execution.”

    1. that’s a great team! my mom had to actually tell my uncle (who’s older and lives next door) to NOT mow every week. she pays him to do it–even though his own family does NOT allow him to mow his grass. and because she pays him ad he likes the $$ he mows whether it needs it or not.
      sad situation imo–my brother and his wife could do it for FREE but they’re just sooo busy.

      1. I remember – asswipes! She came to the door and said they had noticed that my lawn was growing much faster this year and asked if I watered it. Notwithstanding all the rain we’ve been getting, I explained that I had tried once years ago to water both front and back lawns just to see (1) how long it would take and (2) how much it would cost me. Sheesh! Over $100 just to do it ONE time! That was when I decided no more watering my lawn; it sat here for close to 3 years with no attention except mowing before I bought the place and survived – it can do it now.

        But I did explain why: I had Matt Bonta, the guy who does my weed spraying every spring, add the fertilizer this year (now I understand why he would only take on mowing my lawn if he mowed it once a week.) I also explained that it will NEVER happen again! LOL

          1. I’m sure all the unusual rain we’ve also gotten this year boosted the fertilizer a good bit. It’s clearly made a difference in the trees so I expect it will do the same in your neck of the woods.

              the damned birds though…they are taking the cherries off the bing cherry tree, and not eating the whole thing–they’re letting them drop on the ground. sigh
              we never net them like some people do–but the tree doesn’t produce enough to even make a pie yet…lol

    Texas Governor Greg Abbott has debuted a new ‘Ten Most Wanted List.’

    It’s called the Texas 10 most wanted Criminal Illegal Immigrants list. Abbott says it was Created in partnership with the Texas Department of Public Safety and says it is a new initiative to locate and arrest repeat offenders who have entered the country illegally and are wanted for dangerous crimes committed in Texas.

    Other states will follow but don’t expect much from the 2024 FBI.

  29. we were standing in line at walmart last night and the woman in the front sounded exactly like Eileen Brennan–raspy voice. her hair was everywhere and she was loud. complaining that the “reader” wasn’t picking up the amount left on her card. the clerk–a young college student–was being extremely patient with her and said try it again–sometimes it does that.

    so the woman loudly yelled at it–AND DON’T TELL ME I DON’T HAVE MONEY ON THERE THIS TIME EITHER! I WOULDN’T COME DOWN HERE AND EMBARRASS MYSELF BY NOT PUTTING MONEY ONT HERE! the machine took it, she got her stuff and walked out.

    the lady in front of us got thru the process quickly and when it was out turn, both my hubby and I commended the girl for her politeness and how she took care of the situation.

    she replied, she treats people how she wants to be treated and said everybody’s angry with the rising prices these days. i said you notice how they keep the price the same on some things, but reduce the quantity in the package. shrinkflation she said nodding her head. (i was impressed) I thought what a smart, young woman. then she said…biden is doing everything he can to combat the “high prices” that Donald Trump caused.

    hubby grabbed my arm and opened his eyes wide–and whispered…please don’t!

    Cotton has unveiled the Constitutional Citizenship Clarification Act, a bill that aims to enshrine in statute the “ambassadors and invaders” exceptions to birthright citizenship.

    Essentially, enacting Cotton’s legislation would bar children of illegal aliens, foreign terrorists, and foreign spies from being entitled to birthright citizenship by amending Section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to:

    • Clarify that a “person born in the United States shall not be considered subject to jurisdiction of the United States in the person of alien parents who are —
      • unlawfully present in the United States (illegal aliens)
      • present in the United States for diplomatic purposes
      • engaged in a hostile occupation of, or a hostile operation in, the United States

  39. Just The News: “A federal court in Washington, D.C., ordered former Trump White House aide Steve Bannon to prison, ending bid and appeals process that he started after being sentenced in October 2022.

    Bannon will seve a fourth-month sentence after being found guilty in July 2022 for defying subpoenas from the Democrat-led House Jan. 6 Committee. Bannon’s sentence was put on hold pending appeal, and his lawyers made their case to a three-judge federal appeals court panel in November 2023.

    The appeals court in May upheld Bannon’s conviction, and federal prosecutors soon filed a motion asking U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols to order Bannon to report to prison. Federal prosecutors told the judge there was “no legal basis” for the continued stay of the sentence after the federal appeals court rejected the appeal, NBC News reports.”

    2. so exciting. I saw 3 dead turkeys on the trip North for Memorial Day. I don’t think I’ve Ever seen a dead turkey on any road before…hmmm. Maybe that indicates a population boom?

      1. wow! I haven’t even seen one dead one here–maybe the coyotes and hawks and bears clean them up quickly–but er don’t have a lot of traffic on our road either. and they do fly–ever seen them fly?

        1. I’ve never seen them fly but Once there were some on the roof of a neighbor’s cottage Up North so they clearly flew to get up there.

          The dead ones I saw were all road kill along I-75, fwiw…

          1. they flew all the time here–but then we have lots of trees—when they get scared they fly–and seeing a flock of turkeys fly into the trees is not something you forget…LOL

              1. i remember the first spring we were in the house…there was a flock of about a hundred turkeys coming up the hill thru the woods and they were being “herded” by 2 coyotes…keeping them together somewhat. a third coyote was waiting higher up the hill. hubby went out on the deck and whistled–that’s how you get a coyote to momentarily stop moving–that’s your opportunity to shoot it. he took his shot, the turkeys took to the air and coyotes took off.

                my son in law has a stuffed and mounted coyote he got at their farm. they never go out at night without some sort of protection–the coyotes are everywhere

  45. LOL…hubby left his truck out last evening after we unloaded the groceries. I just went out because i couldn’t identify something deep deep green colored on the far end of the pond. when i opened the garage door and stepped out next to the truck about 6 butterflies came flying up–they like the cool mud on the driveway. i felt like Snow White…LOL

    btw, they are lily pads and my water lillies are being choked out by the cattails that invaded that side of the pond. i have been putting off grabbing my muck boots and tramping around in the pond because of the fish, but i think if it’s nice this weekend, i may have to…

      1. we went looking for a treatment (natural) one for the blanket weed that started growing 2 years ago. everything at the local hardware place was pretty harsh and would probably kill the fish and since we have outfall pipes we didn’t want to use anything like that. the guy at the store told us to try alfalfa or barley bales (i forget which)–that’s what he uses on his pond.

        the ducks bring in all kinds of stuff on their feet–as do the deer and bear when they climb in. when the rain is falling heavy and the outfall pipes are in use, the stuff pretty much washes out and into the creek, then into the stream and river. but when the waterline is lower than the pipes, it can stagnate and not wash that stuff out and it takes hold. then it can be hard to get rid of.

        the pond guy was supposed to come last spring, but he never showed and when i emailed and asked what happened–he said he had health issues. i asked if he could refer us to someone else, but i never heard back. makes me mad because he still is advertising in the penny saver.

      i saw that story about the woman. how can she be sent to prison for praying outside an abortion clinic? did she impeded someone trying to get in?
