What Shall We Bake Today?

In honor of Memorial Day, today’s entry is a Patriotic Memorial Day Cake.  The technique used to make the multi colored cake can be used for any holiday!

Patriotic Memorial Day Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 box White Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and whole eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons red gel food color
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons blue gel food color
  • 1/2 cup from 1 tub (16 oz) Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • 2 teaspoons Red, White & Blue Sprinkles, if desired

Steps

Heat oven to 350°F. Generously spray 12-cup fluted tube cake pan with baking spray with flour.

In large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil and whole eggs with electric mixer on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. In small bowl, place 1 cup of the batter; stir in 1 teaspoon of the red food color until blended. In another small bowl, place 1 cup of the batter; stir in 1 teaspoon of the blue food color until blended.

Pour red cake batter into bottom of pan. Carefully pour remaining white batter over red batter in pan. Carefully pour blue batter over white batter. (Blue batter does not need to cover white batter completely; it looks better if it just forms a ring in the center of the white batter.)

Bake 39 to 44 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove cake from oven. Let stand 10 minutes, remove from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

Place cake on cooling rack over waxed paper or cooking parchment paper. In small microwavable bowl, place 1/4 cup of the frosting. Microwave uncovered on High 10 to 15 seconds or until thin enough to drizzle over cake. With spoon, drizzle warmed frosting back and forth over cake in striping pattern. Divide remaining frosting between 2 small microwavable bowls. To 1 bowl, stir in 1/4 teaspoon red food color until well blended. Microwave uncovered on High 5 to 10 seconds or until thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle over cake. Repeat with remaining bowl of frosting and 1/4 teaspoon blue food color. Sprinkle candy sprinkles on top. Let stand about 30 minutes or until frosting is set. Store loosely covered at room temperature.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

When you add batter to pan, do not mix with spoon. Just pour in so colors don’t mix but rather just rest on top of each other in pan.

We like using baking spray with flour when baking our red, white and blue bundt cake for easy removal from pan. Greasing pans with shortening and lightly dusting with flour will also work.

Watch closely while warming frosting in the microwave; it doesn’t need a lot of time before it starts to melt down into a looser texture for drizzling.

ENJOY!

  1. Morning All
it’s about 60* and they’re predicting rain. Looking out at the pond this morning, I can see my yellow irises survived the onslaught of deer and bear and several are blooming!!

    1. Morning, Pat! I’ve got 55 this morning and so far, mostly clear skies and slightly breezy. SMH – so much for their stupid forecasts! Last night, it got really windy with storm clouds all around so I went out and brought the feeders in; Wheezer returned several times and showed up at the front door, too. VERY curious about what’s going on inside. He showed up for breakfast this morning when I was putting the feeders back up. Glad your irises made it! It is soooo satisfying to look out and see a beautiful green lawn; pulling all the weeds under the cottonwood has made a big difference as well. It makes the hard work worthwhile, that’s for sure.

        1. That’s not politics – that’s just a cat’s life! I started wondering yesterday, tho, if I was right that Wheezer is a male. I thought I saw some balls last year but I’ve been trying to take another peek; unfortunately, I haven’t been able to catch a good look under the tail. But the other males in the neighborhood are all soooo much bigger – some I can tell they’ve grown since they’ve been around for years. But Wheezer stays small and thin….IF it’s a female, that, along with the timeframes of the disappearances, could mean that litters of kittens are being born somewhere. I would think the kittens would be brought around to be introduced to the food at some point, tho. Then again, roving Tom’s may be killing her kittens, too. It’s so hard to tell anything for sure with strays. And I really wish I hadn’t gone nuts with the spray bottle; otherwise, I’d know for sure by now.

        1. Most of all what I remember (besides the rare slap in the face – it didn’t happen often, I will say that) was having to go out and pick my own switch, which would then be used on the back of my legs and butt. The main thread that runs thru that period of my life was fear…..fear that they would give me away, too.

            1. Well, of course that’s hindsight – I certainly didn’t know or understand it at the time. Yeah, it sucked but there were others who were FAR worse off than I was – I had good care (if not as loving or accepting as I would have liked), a nice roof over my head, plenty of food, nice clothes, etc., etc. I wasn’t beaten to a pulp or sexually abused in an egregious way or out on the street. My sister, OTOH, what she went thru…..oh, it was MUCH worse than what I endured! What really brought it home to me, tho, was when I met Melli and heard her story of being a child living in the streets and the horrors she survived. That made me realize that I was really lucky in many ways.

NEW: Unsealed Docs in Trump Mar-a-Lago Case Further Reveal Just How Ludicrous the Raid Was

As the tweets below indicate, FBI notes regarding a June 3, 2022, meeting at Mar-a-Lago lay out their discussions with Trump’s representatives and Trump himself. To further highlight:

Former President Donald J. TRUMP entered the MAL dining room and greeted the Agents and Attorney. TRUMP advised there was very good security at MAL. TRUMP stated he wanted to be open and transparent and that he was “an open book,” and there for whatever the FBI needed. TRUMP thanked the DOJ and FBI for their good work prior to departing the dining room.

Counter to advisement from [redacted] TRUMP gave his authorization to allow the FBI to view the basement storage space in MAL. The FBI Agents and DOJ Attorney were escorted by [redacted] and USSS Agents, to include [redacted] and others unidentified, to a storage room located in the basement of MAL. The group was led out of the MAL dining room through the living room, outside to the pool area, and through a door to the right, into a part of the building referred to as the “Cloisters.”

Here’s a clip of President Trump at the NASCAR Race yesterday. He is saluting.

Can anyone explain to me why he is saluting? I’m pretty sure I know the answer, but I wanted to put it out there anyways for your thoughts.

During President Trump’s term as President, he placed his hand over his heart. Now he salutes.

It is my understanding that only those who served or are currently serving salute.

    Thoughts?

      1. I’ll never forget the very first time I heard it….in a rental car leaving the airport in GA with a LTC from the JCS. It was during the Precision Guided Munitions study in ’84 (when the song first came out on his album) and we were there for a conference. But the deepest reaction I had was a few days after 9/11 when I was coming back from Warrenton and it came on the radio. I started crying so hard I had to pull off on the side of the road.

From Wiki: “It reached No. 7 on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart when originally released on May 21, 1984. That summer, the song was included in a film about President Ronald Reagan, the Republican presidential nominee, that was shown at the 1984 Republican National Convention.[5] “God Bless the U.S.A.” gained prominence during the 1988 United States presidential election campaign, when Greenwood performed the song at the 1988 Republican National Convention and at rallies for the Republican nominee, George H.W. Bush.[6][7] The song was also featured in television advertisements for Bush.[8] The song became popular again during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991. As a result of its newfound popularity, Greenwood re-recorded the track for his 1992 album American Patriot.

  5. “The Dark Side of Wikipedia — It’s billed as “the encyclopedia anyone can edit.” In reality, it can be the opposite.”

    SHARYL ATTKISSON, MAY 27, 2024

EXCERPT: “Let me begin by saying that there are honest, well-meaning editors of Wikipedia who take part for no other reason than it’s an interest or hobby. However, when it comes to matters of controversy—and there are many— these honest editors inevitably find themselves overpowered and outgunned by what I call Wikipedia’s “agenda editors.”

Wikipedia’s agenda editors are editors who watch and control Wikipedia pages in order to further a particular slant or narrative. These editors not only add their own selected edits, but they delete edits by others if those edits don’t line up with what the agenda editors want to portray.

Wikipedia’s agenda editors may act because they are strongly biased on a particular person or topic. They may act because they are connected to someone who benefits from their edits. They may even edit the way they do because they are compensated for it.

Often, their edits result in Wikipedia pages that are slanted, incomplete, or even entirely false.

If you dig into why this system exists and is allowed to continue, you unearth a dark world filled with censorship and shocking cases of retribution.

    Read on for details…..”

“Dems Are Pissed At Hunter Biden. Here’s Why…”

“Democratic insiders expressed discomfort at Hunter Biden’s attendance at the White House reception for Jewish American Heritage Month this week. An anonymous Democratic operative remarked on the political implications, describing the First Son’s presence as “a blind spot” and highlighting the negative optics for the administration. “It’s not exactly the look people need or want,” the source stated.

Hunter Biden, who frequently visits the White House given his father’s presidency, also attended a state dinner in honor of Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday.

The timing of Hunter Biden’s public appearances coincides with his upcoming legal challenges. Hunter Biden faces a gun trial set to commence in June, with a tax fraud trial scheduled for September. One source framed the upcoming presidential election campaigns by comparing the legal issues of Hunter Biden with those involving former President Donald Trump. “One guy is on trial, the other guy’s son has a trial starting in a month,” the source commented.

For these reasons, Hunter Biden’s visible presence at the White House, particularly at public events, is drawing scrutiny. His attendance at the Jewish American Heritage Month event featured several prominent figures, such as President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, alongside Jewish leaders and activists like Julia Haart, Tiffany Haddish, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Hunter Biden’s numerous legal woes were recently referenced in a parody song by rapper Afroman, who remixed his 2000 hit “Because I Got High” into “Hunter Got High.”

‘Renegade Royals’: King Charles Considers Stripping Harry & Meghan of Titles.

    Meghan

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “King Charles III has discussed the possibility of stripping Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles. The conversation reportedly involves lengthy discussions with Prince William, who is said to share concerns about potential backlash.

The titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex became a point of contention following their departure from official royal duties and subsequent move to the United States. This development led to widespread calls for the couple to be stripped of their titles. Sources indicate that King Charles has recently revisited this issue with Prince William, though the decision remains unresolved.

King Charles and Prince William “have had lengthy discussions about stripping Meghan and Harry of their royal titles, but they are terrified this would backfire and make the situation worse,” said Royal author and expert Tom Quinn.

During their recent tour of Nigeria, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prominently used their titles, with seating labeled “Duke” and “Duchess,” which has reignited the controversy.

“The last thing they want is to give the renegade royals something else to complain about,” Quinn said. He noted that even if their titles were revoked, Meghan and Harry would likely continue their activities, retaining a significant public following worldwide.

After stepping back from senior royal duties in 2020, the couple ceased to be referred to as “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness” but retained their Duke and Duchess titles. This year, they strengthened their association with the Royal Family by relaunching their website, Sussex.com, which features their titles and a coat of arms.

The couple’s barely concealed distaste for the Royal Family and pursuit of profit led a Conservative Member of Parliament to introduce a bill last year to strip them of their royal titles.”

  8. Just The News: “Former President Donald Trump is trying to stop a movie about him from being released by sending a cease-and-desist letter to the filmmakers. Trump sent the letter on Friday to the filmmakers behind “The Apprentice,” in an attempt to stop the biopic from being released in the United States, Variety reported.

The movie, which focuses on Trump’s younger years as a real estate developer, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this week, but it failed to clinch any awards, according to The Hill.

“If you do not immediately cease and desist all distribution and marketing of this libelous farce, we will be forced to pursue all appropriate legal remedies,” the cease and desist letter stated.

Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung warned that the campaign would sue the filmmakers for making “blatantly false assertions” in the movie.

“This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire,” Cheung said last week.”

  9. Just The News: “Multiple Louisiana papers that are part of the Gannett newspaper network, which owns USA Today, removed an op-ed about transgender athletes written by Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy.

The message, “This content has been removed because it did not meet our editorial standards,” is displayed on the webpage after users click on the link that originally contained the op-ed.

“We recognize the importance of sharing varying perspectives and the vital role we play convening conversations,” Gannett Opinion Editor and Vice President of Standards and Ethics Michael McCarter told Fox News Digital on Friday after the op-ed was discovered to have been taken down.

“Sen. John Kennedy’s submitted opinion column did not meet our ethical guidelines, which state we will treat people with respect. After further review, our editorial team removed the column from our website. Sen. Kennedy has been given the opportunity to revise his language – not his viewpoint – to adhere with our standards,” McCarter also said.

Kennedy criticized Gannett’s decision. “They think they are the speech police. Drunk on certainty and virtue, they think they are our moral teacher. This attitude is why so many Americans have lost confidence in the media. The media is not going to win that trust back until they return to neutrality instead of advocacy,” the senator said.

“Most people don’t support allowing biological men to participate in women’s sports because they think that will bastardize sports, skew the results, and hurt women. Other people disagree,” Kennedy added. “Gannett should simply report the two sides and not try to silence the position it disagrees with.”

The op-ed, titled, “Is transgender inclusion more important than women’s sports?” was originally published on May 11 by eight Louisiana-based Gannett papers.”

  15. “How You Can Honor the Fallen This Memorial Day”

Daily Signal, Tom Callender / May 25, 2018

(More than 1.3 million men and women have died in service to our nation from the Revolutionary War to the present day. (Photo: Bill Chizek/Getty Images)

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “This weekend marks the 150th anniversary of that first “Memorial Day” remembrance, when Congressman James Garfield—who would later become president—addressed a crowd of more than 5,000 at Arlington Cemetery.

The tradition continues to this day at national cemeteries across the nation, with the president of the United States most often delivering the address and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

To millions of Americans, Memorial Day symbolizes the unofficial start of summer—the opening of the local community pool, baseball games, concerts, barbecues, and trips to the beach. Regrettably, a Gallup poll in 2000 revealed that only 28 percent of Americans knew the true meaning of Memorial Day, and 40 percent confused it with Veterans Day.

So, what is the meaning of Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is the day to remember those men and women who died while serving in our nation’s armed forces, whereas Veterans Day is a day to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Why have so many Americans lost sight of the true meaning and observance of Memorial Day? Some would argue it began with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which moved Memorial Day from its traditional date of May 30 to the last Monday in May.

Many veterans organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, still oppose that move, stating that the creation of the three-day weekend has diluted the focus of the day from solemn reflection on, and tribute to, those who sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation and led to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day began at the national level on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, with a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen Civil War soldiers. This tradition continued to grow, and following World War I, Decoration Day became a day of remembrance of all soldiers, sailors, and Marines who died in service to their nation, not just the Civil War.

It was not until after World War II that the holiday became more popularly known as Memorial Day. In his 1868 call to celebrate Decoration Day as a national holiday, Maj. Gen. John Logan stated eloquently:

Let us then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of springtime.

Let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor.

Let us, in this solemn presence, renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the nation’s gratitude—the soldier’s and sailor’s widow and orphan.

These core tenets still provide a call to order for every American on this solemn day of remembrance.

Since the founding of our nation 242 years ago, more than 1.3 million men and women have died in service to our nation from the Revolutionary War to World War II to the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Syria.

To help remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000. This resolution asks Americans, wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to pause for one minute in a symbolic act of unity to “remember and honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.”

To help signal that moment of remembrance, all Amtrak trains sound their whistles for the entire minute.

While there’s nothing wrong with spending time with family and enjoying leisure activities this weekend, let us all remember Logan’s call and dedicate Monday to more meaningful acts of remembrance.

So, what can you and your family do to carry on the meaning of this sacred day in your community and properly honor our fallen heroes?

    • Display an American flag and lower it to half-mast until noon in honor of every soldier, sailor, Marine, and airman who gave their lives in service to our nation.
    • Volunteer to place wreaths at the grave sites at your closest national cemetery.
    • Set your cellphone’s alarm to remind you to pause at 3 p.m. for the National Moment of Remembrance, and listen for that Amtrak whistle.
    • Attend a religious service or engage in quiet reflection on the sacrifice others have made for your freedom and security.
    • Visit a war memorial or monument, and discuss the meaning of Memorial Day with your children and grandchildren.
    • Reach out to any neighborhood Gold Star family (a family that has lost a service member) to offer your support.

As Americans, we enjoy the enormous blessing of freedom. Remembering those who died to preserve that freedom is an obligation we all share.”

  16. “WHO “treaty” fails, Open Border and Immigration Up Next — Moving beyond stereotypes, gaslighting and insults”

ROBERT W MALONE MD, MS, MAY 27, 2024

“First British conservative/libertarian politician, thought leader and broadcaster Nigel Farage drew major corporatist UK mainstream media fire for opposing the WHO pandemic “accord” (the not really a “treaty”- treaty).

    From “The Guardian:”

The World Health Organization has accused Nigel Farage of spreading misinformation after he launched a campaign to block an international treaty designed to improve global pandemic preparedness.

WHO member states are negotiating a deal to shore up cooperation against new pathogens. If adopted, the legally binding treaty would commit countries to helping each other in the event of a pandemic, increase research and sharing of data, and promote fair access to vaccines.

But populist figures including Farage and a number of Tory MPs are lobbying the UK government to block the deal, claiming that it will give the WHO power to enforce lockdowns on countries, dictate policy on mask wearing and control vaccine stocks.

Farage is fronting the campaign group Action on World Health (AWH), which was registered on Companies House last week.

The AWH’s website lists supporters including the Tory MPs Henry Smith, Philip Davies and David Jones, as well as peers and others. Companies House filings show that it has three directors including the barrister Paul Diamond, whose work has included high-profile cases on behalf of socially conservative Christians and cases where the use of vaccines has been disputed.

Visitors to the AWH’s site are helped to locate and lobby their MP using template “suggested text” emails that claim the WHO treaty will “strip away” the UK’s decision-making powers.

The potency of what some on the right view as a potential new “wedge issue” was underlined in contributions by Tory backbenchers such as Philip Hollobone, who echoed populist language by describing the WHO as being under the influence of “the global elite” and urging against the UK backing the treaty.

The UK health minister Andrew Stephenson urged MPs in parliament this week to dismiss what he described as myths being spread about the treaty, which the UK is considering whether or not to support.

Lockdown mandates are not part of the deal and a claim by Farage that the treaty would require countries to give away 20% of their vaccines was “simply not true,” said Stephenson.

His comments were echoed by the WHO directly. Responding to AWH’s claims, a spokesperson said a draft of the treaty reaffirmed “the principle of sovereignty” of member states.

“Claims that the draft agreement will cede sovereignty to WHO and will give the WHO secretariat power to impose lockdowns or vaccine mandates on countries are false and have never been requested nor proposed. This agreement will not, and cannot, grant sovereignty to WHO.”

Farage, who denies that the campaign is sharing misinformation, claimed the UK government was “running scared” and that Conservative MPs had “suddenly been shouting” about the treaty on Wednesday.

“The governing party are very scared of me and of anything that would look like a surrender of sovereignty after Brexit. I’m trying to bring to the public’s attention something that is not being debated – that’s what I have done throughout my career – and I think we are getting traction already,” he said.

“This may not be a campaign with mass populist appeal but we can influence the government’s position when they get to Geneva in a couple of weeks time.

Some might snipe that Nigel is a bit late to the party, and certainly groups like former (Reagan) Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Frank Gaffney’s “Sovereignty Coalition” as well as individual physician thought leaders such as Dr. Kat Lindley and Dr. Meryl Nass deserve a lot of credit for months and months of hard work researching, defining and publicizing the obscure and often hidden details of the effort to reward the WHO with additional powers and funding for its abysmal performance and chronic manipulative dishonesty during the COVID crisis. But lets not quibble. Mr. Farage helped raise awareness of the key issues at a critical time, and for that we should all be grateful.

Nigel Farage, as in the case of UKIP and Brexit, once again stood back, watched, and then took a stand on a controversial topic – which seems to be almost unheard of (aside from the lonely “voice in the wilderness” of Andrew Bridgen) in today’s British politics. And whether or not his actions played a role, the WHO pandemic accord negotiations have apparently collapsed right before the scheduled crucial vote today- which happens to be the US Federal holiday set aside to memorialize the service of military veterans who fought and died to defend freedom. Yet another coincidence suggestive of divine intervention.

In any case, apparently the WHO negotiations have failed to meet a self-imposed two-year deadline, and the “treaty” will not proceed to a ratification vote today – but not due to concerns about empowering the unelected WHO with enhanced “New World Order” globalist powers to trample on individual and national sovereignty whenever it feels the need to declare a health crisis (anthropomorphic Global Warming, for example)…..”

  20. Hmmmm….interesting….

EXCERPT: “Repetition has a strange relationship with the mind. Take the experience of déjà vu, when we wrongly believe we have experienced a novel situation in the past – leaving us with an spooky sense of pastness.

But we have discovered that déjà vu is actually a window into the workings of our memory system.

Our research found that the phenomenon arises when the part of the brain which detects familiarity de-synchronises with reality. Déjà vu is the signal which alerts you to this weirdness: it is a type of “fact checking” for the memory system.

But repetition can do something even more uncanny and unusual. The opposite of déjà vu is “jamais vu”, when something you know to be familiar feels unreal or novel in some way. In our recent research, which has just won an Ig Nobel award for literature, we investigated the mechanism behind the phenomenon.

Jamais vu may involve looking at a familiar face and finding it suddenly unusual or unknown. Musicians have it momentarily – losing their way in a very familiar passage of music. You may have had it going to a familiar place and becoming disorientated or seeing it with “new eyes”.

It’s an experience which is even rarer than déjà vu and perhaps even more unusual and unsettling. When you ask people to describe it in questionnaires about experiences in daily life they give accounts like: “While writing in my exams, I write a word correctly like ‘appetite’ but I keep looking at the word over and over again because I have second thoughts that it might be wrong.”

In daily life, it can be provoked by repetition or staring, but it needn’t be. One of us, Akira, has had it driving on the motorway, necessitating that he pull over onto the hard shoulder to allow his unfamiliarity with the pedals and the steering wheel to “reset”. Thankfully, in the wild, it’s rare…..”

          1. And my natural tendency to do that is exacerbated by the years I spent working in government contracts, where attention to detail – even down to the placement of a comma or a period – is critical.

  22. SMH – silly birds! Another small female got caught inside the cage – she was still hopping around but couldn’t find her way out. I went out there hoping it would scare her enough for her to pull herself out. She had one foot stuck when I reached up next to the cage – that was enough and she pulled it free and took off.

Just checked my cantelope – I’ve got 5 good seedlings going, with 3 of them at the 2nd leaf level! The other 2 were the ones I replanted; actually, I had originally planned on staggering them anyway but, as usual, went off half-cocked and planted them all! Guess it was a good thing that the first seeds didn’t take! LOL – Predictions are for a good stretch of warm, sunny days so they should take off.

  23. Just The News: “President Joe Biden visited the home of his daughter-in-law Hallie Biden Sunday night, just weeks before she is set to testify against first son Hunter Biden in his federal trial for alleged gun crimes.

Hallie is the widow of Beau Biden and ex-girlfriend of Hunter. The visit by the president Sunday evening was at Hallie’s home in Delaware, according to Axios reporter Alex Thompson and The New York Post

The White House did not give an explanation for the president’s visit, which took place at around 8 p.m., also according to The Post.

Hunter Biden is facing two trials this year on gun and tax evasion charges.

Hallie was in a relationship with Hunter during the time of his alleged gun crimes and is expected to testify against him along with his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, according to National Review.

Prosecutors are alleging that Hunter lied about his use of drugs when he applied to purchase a gun and that the gun was later illegally disposed of. Hallie Biden reportedly got rid of it in 2018.”
