DIY: Pine Cone Bird Feeders

DIY 2 Minutes

This is an easy craft for anyone to do…and it comes with a story.  First off, you need pinecones, some twine, peanut butter and birdseed.  Merely tie the twine around the pine cone, spread peanut butter on the pine cones and roll in birdseed.  (I microwaved the peanut butter to turn spreading into dipping—much easier.)

We live in a mature wooded area meaning there are extremely few—if any—trees with low enough branches for us to hang these pine cones on.  (This is also why we have no hanging bird feeders—that and the bears would attack them.)

We wanted to attract and feed birds during the winter, so hubby devised a wooden tree of sorts.  Similar to the one pictured below, but not as tall or full.  We put it in a plastic bucket with some rocks thrown in to make sure the wind would not blow it over and put it on the deck.  I tied about a dozen of these pine cone feeders to it securely with bright red ribbon.  The project was finished around dinner time and we didn’t expect to have visitors till the next day. 

We were wrong!  Watching tv that evening we heard a THUMP! and looked at each other.  We thought for sure wind had blown the pine cone tree over, but it wasn’t windy at all.  We turned on the spotlights and saw squirrels DRAGGING our tree!  They had the pine cones in their teeth and paws and had managed to bring the tree down to the deck where they were trying to drag the tree, bucket and all, off the deck and into the woods.

I was out the door and charging at the little thieves while hubby stood and laughed.  The squirrels took that moment to let go of their treasure.

I picked up some of the rocks that had spilled out of the bucket and was winding up to hurl a couple when I felt hubby grab my arm.  “Let them go,” he laughed.  “You scared them good.  They won’t be back.”

Guess what? He was wrong.  They came back in the middle of the night and CHEWED the ribbons OFF the tree and made off with all 12!!

Sigh.

    1. Morning, Pat! Cute open! Of course I knew immediately what would happen but some people just have to learn for themselves! LOL – only 22 this morning! Who knows what the day will bring!

        1. It dawned on me this morning – I’ve got to get the jelly feeder ready for the Orioles. Back on the hunt again for a silicone jello mold that will fit. Found one on Amazon but the shipping costs more than the mold itself! Now if I would just join Prime….yeah, right! NOT HAPPENING!!!

    BUT….Rollins was hired as a part-time professor recently at Roxbury Community College, becoming the highest-paid part-time professor at the college.

    RINO’s are quitting the House. Soon, the Dems could flip the House which means Dems take on the Speaker role. It’s argued that the Speaker can be an outsider, appointed to the role. All which means that the following real life plot becomes possible…

    1. Enough RINO’s are retired so Dems flip the House
    2. Dems take the Speaker role
    3. Dems appoint a Very popular outsider as Speaker (eg it could be anybody from Taylor Swift to RFK jr)
    4. VP Kakala Harris retires or is removed, and is not replaced, leaving VP vacant (or she is deemed ineligible to be President).
    5. Biden is retired
    6. With no VP (or Kakala deemed ineligible) the Very popular Speaker is appointed President for the months leading to the election.
    7. Very popular Speaker does popular things just to attract votes… and suddenly, the 2024 election is not so Trump dominated.

  14. Just The News: “Arkansans can no longer mark “X” instead of “M” or “F” on driver’s licenses forms, the state Legislative Council decided on Friday.

    The rule passed as an emergency measure and goes into effect immediately. Some lawmakers questioned why the rule is considered an emergency during the meeting and earlier at a Thursday subcommittee meeting.

    Jim Hudson, secretary of the Department of Finance and Administration, said the rule was approved as policy in 2014 and did not go before the Legislature. He said no one has complained, but the issue could affect law enforcement.

    “I will tell you that as we were looking at this issue I’ve had conversations with the law enforcement community just to ask if they were even aware of this existing policy by DFA and they were not even aware of it,” Hudson said. “So in the sense of it is a document that law enforcement relies upon and if law enforcement cannot have confidence that it is not a validly issued document that gives them information about the person that they are encountering, I do believe that is a public safety issue.”

    Sen. Clarke Tucker, D-Little Rock, said he did not believe the emergency clause was needed because there was no imminent peril to the state’s public health, safety or welfare.

    “The role of this body today is to remove the opportunity for the public to comment on a permanent rule,” Tucker said. “At least when we pass a law with an emergency clause in session, the public has the opportunity to comment in a committee hearing. But they don’t have that opportunity when we pass an emergency rule.”

    The American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas said the policy seeks to “erase the existence of nonbinary and intersex Arkansans by denying them identity documents that reflect their true selves, forcing them into categories that do not represent their identities.”

    “The ability to use a gender-neutral marker, such as ‘X,’ is essential for the safety and recognition of nonbinary and intersex individuals – a stance supported by 22 states, the District of Columbia, and federal regulations regarding passports and other documents,’ the ACLU said.

    The rule passed the committee by a voice vote, with some members voting “no.”

    Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she supports the change. “This policy is just common sense,” Sanders said. “Only women give birth, men shouldn’t play women’s sports, and there are only two genders. As long as I’m governor, Arkansas state government will not endorse nonsense.”

    Trump offered last month to post a $100 million appeal bond rather than the full amount as the process plays out in court, but the judge denied the proposal.

    Trump’s “ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is ‘a practical impossibility,’” the former president’s lawyers said, per NBC News. “These diligent efforts have included approaching about 30 surety companies through 4 separate brokers.”

    Efforts to secure the bond include “countless hours negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies in the world,” but the work has been unfruitful, per the document. 

    Trump and his company must post the full amount by next week to stop New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James from being able to collect it while he appeals the judgment, which New York Judge Arthur Engoron ordered him to pay. 

    Before the trial started, Engoron had determined Trump was liable for inflating his wealth to receive better terms on loans and insurance. The trial itself was solely to determine penalties against Trump, his company and others implicated in the case, including his two eldest sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.”

  25. 2 very large women are kicked off a flight because of their size. the airline apologizes, pays to get them on another flight, pays for their hotel accommodations (since it wasn’t the same day), pays for their meals and access to an exclusive lounge…the women still will seek “compensation” from the airline for their trauma.

    To make matters worse, Harding claims she was told they’d need to rebook on another flight to accommodate them, which wouldn’t be available until Sunday due to the soaring demand.

    When the pair informed Air NZ they couldn’t afford the ticket, the airline footed the bill. They also covered accommodations, meals and even granted them free access to the exclusive Koru Lounge while ironing out the details.

    Air NZ even issued a formal apology to the pair.

    “We are committed to treating all customers with respect and dignity and we apologize that these customers received an inconsistent experience,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement. “We will continue to work with the customer directly to address their concerns.”

    However, they added that they “strongly recommend” that passengers contact them before boarding if they require extra space onboard, claiming that flight staff would try and accommodate them if possible.

    Currently, New Zealand doesn’t have any laws stating that plus-sized passengers have to buy another seat, instead leaving it up to the airline.

    1. The media claimed that Trump called neo-Nazis and from a Charlottesville white nationalists rally “fine people.” They used this to claim that Trump was a racist but what they didn’t tell people was that they had selectively edited and cut the entire statement where Trump clarified.

    The media: “Trump says there were very fine people on both sides.”

    Trump’s entire statement: “There were very fine people on both sides and I’m not talking about the Neo nazis and white supremacists because they should be condemned totally.”

    1. The media claimed that Trump demanded his supporters riot at the capitol on January 6th. They purposely cut the entire clip short in order to assert that Trump wanted violence. Twitter even went out of their way to censor what he said.

    1. The media attempted to claim that a student named Nick Sandmann, who happened to be wearing a MAGA hat, was racist and mocking indigenous in Washington DC at a rally. They attempted to destroy the kid’s reputation and life for simply standing there and not reacting when he came up and played music in his face.

    The Media: Sandmann was mocking an indigenous person and therefore Trump supporters are racist.

    The Truth: The indigenous man walked up to Sandmann and he literally just stood there and did not react.

    Sandmann went on to sue the Washington Post and CNN for defamation and they settled for millions of dollars. The media loses again.

    There has been no end to media deception when it comes to Trump and his supporters and I doubt they will stop now with their latest attempt to claim that Trump said there would be a bloodbath when he talking about the automobile industry. The good news is that people believe the establishment media less and less and think for themselves at an increasing rate. Their power of the people wanes. We are waking up.
