What Shall we Bake Today?

Since St. Patty’s Day is this month, how about a green bundt cake?  This recipe is super easy and quick using a cake mix and canned frosting!

Pistachio Bundt Cake

Ingredients

1 box Pillsbury™ Classic White cake mix

1 box (3.4 ounce pistachio instant pudding mix)

1 cup water

1/2 cup vegetable oil

3 large eggs

1 can Pillsbury™ Classic White frosting

Chopped pistachios for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray a bundt pan with cooking spray if needed and set aside.

In a large bowl mix together cake mix and pudding mix.

Stir in water, vegetable oil and eggs until batter is smooth.

Pour into bundt pan and bake for 39-43 minutes until toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Cool cake completely.

Carefully turn cake over onto serving plate.

Remove top and foil from frosting and microwave in 15 second intervals until frosting is pourable but not hot.

Drizzle frosting over cake and sprinkle with chopped pistachios.

Set aside until frosting is firm.

Enjoy!

  1. Morning All!

we lost power sometime over night so we over slept a little. and the heat was off for a while so it’s cold in here! outside the wind is still howling and the temps are at 22*. but the forecast calls for near 60’s this week…we’ll see…lol

      1. Morning Filly!
since there’s snow on the ground and it’s so dang cold this morning, I took out another corn/apple block this morning for the deer.
when i went out I saw a deer standing not far from the stump and she moved a step or 2 back till i started removing the plastic from the block. she sniffed and sniffed–her head up nose to the wind–and then snorted and stomped to scare me off so she could start on the block…lol
it was so cold i was fumbling with the pocket knife and the thick plastic…she starting inching closer. i didn’t look up cuz that would have scared her. i got it unwrapped and went inside. hubby was watching from the door. he said she was about 2 feet from me and as soon as i turned she went right to it…lol

          1. we haven’t put a block out since the temps turned warmer. but since everything’s white again, i thought maybe one more.
there’s a fuzzy smaller one out there now…lol. there’s 2 who look similar…last year’s babies…but their coats are noticeably fuzzy whereas the other deer coats are more sleek.

  2. NF: There were very few fixed-price contracts at the companies where I worked. A certain amount of extra costs can be buried in the “Overhead” category, which includes facility/personnel/admin costs.

EXCERPT: “As the Pentagon looks to shift the risk of cost overruns to contractors, some are sitting on the sidelines instead of bidding on projects from their best client: the U.S. Defense Department.

The hesitancy comes in the wake of several high-profile contract losses.

Northrop Grumman Corp. took a $1.56 billion pre-tax loss in January on the B-21 Raider program. The company bid on the U.S. Air Force project in 2015, before the pandemic, inflation and supply chain issues, which have led to cost overruns that the company has to eat under the terms of its contract.

“We have passed on some high-profile programs,” Northrop Grumman Chief Executive Kathy Warden said on an investor call earlier this year.

    —————–

The U.S. Government Accountability Office, which serves as the investigative arm of Congress, often recommends fixed-price contracts.

“Our prior work has shown that fixed-priced contracts are beneficial because the government generally pays a set price and the contractor generally assumes the risk and responsibility for any cost overruns,” according to a 2023 Government Accountability Office report.

L3Harris Technologies, a defense contractor with 50,000 employees, told investors last year that it passed on some Pentagon contracts that it would have otherwise pursued.

“It’s very hard to commit to a fixed price development program when you don’t know the spec,” L3Harris Technologies CEO Chris Kubasik said in a 2023 earnings call. “I think we all look back at all the write-offs and losses and more times than not they’re tied to that. So we will not be playing that game.”

Kubasik said that over time he expected others to get out of the game as well.

“We’re not going to bid,” he said. “And I would think over time others aren’t going to bid. And ultimately we’ll go back to the appropriate contracting vehicle for the appropriate opportunity.”….

  3. “Health Care: Right, Privilege, or Neither?”

BY THOMAS BUCKLEY  MARCH 9, 2024

EXCERPT: “Much of the current debate surrounding health care – putting aside momentarily the catastrophic failure of the public health system during the pandemic – is whether or not it is a “right” or a “privilege.”

Critically, though, what should be a key component of the discussion is utterly ignored: should it be thought of as an evolutionary advantage, a biological imperative that would remove it from such a discussion?

Crucially, the right or privilege debate is itself invalid. Health care is neither and the back and forth over the issue in fact damages any attempts at reform because it creates a false dichotomy and a political distraction.

The definitions are crucial to understanding the issue. First, what is health care? Is it cradle to grave, any and everything you could possibly need or want whenever you need or want it with no other considerations save a person’s self-defined wellness, comfort, and care?

Or is it more basic – get hit by a bus and get your leg fixed; pretty much everything else you’re on your own? Or something in between?

What is a right? Health care cannot legitimately be seen as a right like free speech because that right does not inherently entail physicality and/or cost. In fact, health care does not even remotely qualify as a right, as the term right has been used for the past 300 years.

Those who demand it be seen as a right currently are manipulating – purposefully – both the meaning of right and of health care. The argument of it being a right is in fact an argument calling for it to be free – no more, no less – and free stuff is not a right, especially when said benefit is stripped of any concomitant responsibility that all actual civic rights come with.

(This it seems is what Joe Biden thinks – a sign associated with his infrastructure bill for some reason)

To be blunt, no one has the right to make a person pay for their neighbor’s chiropractor, particularly when they are not allowed to tell the neighbor to stop lifting 400-pound boxes for fun every day.

There is also the matter of the societal aspects of health care, thereby extending those putative rights and adding restrictions and laws and rules and caveats along the way. This already extant effort to move health care from a right to an all-encompassing construct that should have primacy in society has begun; not just a health care right but health care justice, health care equity, as it were….”

    1. it’s like teeth. everyone should have the right to have decent teeth…cleanings, cavities should all be covered. but then you get into the teeth bleaching systems, the cosmetic stuff–the braces (I admit some braces might be necessary but some are cosmetic). who pays for those?

and the meth addict needing new teeth because he did meth…my fault or his?

drugs to save your life? ok but drugs to make you lose weight? no

there will always be people who scam the system because they can.

cosmetic surgery because you were born with a cleft palate? okay

cosmetic surgery because you don’t like your nose? want bigger boobs? no

      it’s not a right beyond a certain point, it’s a privilege.

  4. Ha! Mom is coming around a bit….she has an issue with TED (Thyroid Eye Disease) in her eyes and there are no MD ophthalmologists near Norfolk. She called me a few minutes ago to have me look up where the closest one to her might be on that oh-so-terrible internet. Very limited options – Sioux City, IA or Omaha/Lincoln. When/if the day ever comes where she agrees with me on Trump, I will be setting off fireworks!!!

An alternative to the Girl Scouts.

If you were hoping it would be something with a Christian emphasis…

    You’d be wrong.

    Meet Radical Monarchs.

    (Give me strength.)

First established in 2014 in the San Francisco Bay Area, Radical Monarchs is a troop for Black and Brown girls—as well as children who identify as nonbinary—from 8 to 11 years old.

Its mission, says Marilyn Hollinquest, who started it with her friend Anayvette Martinez, is to teach children to “advocate for themselves and their communities and make the world a more just and joyful place.” There are 104 kids enrolled in cities across the US, including Denver, Minneapolis and Washington.

Just as in Girl Scouts, Radical Monarch troop members earn badges to show they’ve mastered specific skills.

But these aren’t your typical certifications for first aid or painting.

“I wished there was something that existed that centered young girls of color and their experiences, where they could earn badges based on social justice issues, not just making a fire, sewing or selling cookies,” Martinez says. “When I had that idea, I was like, ‘Hey, Lupita, what if I were to do this for you and your friends?’ ”

    (the ignorance is staggering.)

  6. Mom was able to get an appointment with an eye doctor in Norfolk on Wednesday so I am going to Norfolk to meet her at WM and get a few things that she wants to get rid of and I can use. She will ask them about the selenium. She has a small folding gardeners’ bench with a padded seat that I can use for clearing out my flower beds instead of sitting on the hard cement. Every time I went to her place and saw it, I reminded her that I wanted it! LOL I’m also going to take back the hot wax bath I gave her for her hands – didn’t help her much but it helps me a lot in the winter when my arthritis acts up.

  7. “The Accidental Invention of Play-Doh—The much-loved children’s toy was a desperate spinoff of a putty used to clean soot off of wallpaper”

David Kindy, Correspondent, November 12, 2019

EXCERPT: “The handwriting was on the wallpaper for Kutol. Founded in 1912 in Cincinnati, the company’s primary product—a soft, pliable compound used for wiping soot from wallpaper—was no longer in demand and the firm’s future looked bleak. Fortunately, the sister-in-law of one of its principals had an idea: let kids play with it.

Kutol Products had become the largest wallpaper cleaner manufacturer in the world in the early 20th century. Fortunes began to change in the 1950s, though. With the transition from heating with dirtier coal to cleaner oil, gas and electricity, sooty buildup on wallpaper was no longer an issue in many households.

Joseph McVicker was trying to turn around the struggling company when his sister-in-law read an article about how wallpaper cleaner could be used for modeling projects. Sister-in-law Kay Zufall, a nursery school teacher, tested the nontoxic material with children, who loved molding it into all kinds of shapes. She told McVicker of her discovery and even suggested a new name: Play-Doh.

“It’s a tale of technological obsolescence with a happy ending,” says Christopher Bensch, vice president of collections at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. “Fortunately, the sister-in-law realized it would make a better toy than a cleaning product. That turned the company’s fortunes around.”….

    So sad.

Another American child has been tragically killed at the hands of an illegal that never should have been here.

His name is TRAVIS WOLFE. On the night of December 20, 2023 in Missouri, just one day before his 12th birthday, Travis was a passenger in his parents’ car, when an illegal woman from Venezuela, Endrina Bracho, drove the wrong way at 70+ mph causing a head-on collision.

Travis was rushed to Children’s Hospital and put on life support. His parents were taken to Mercy Hospital with broken wrists, broken ribs, a broken sternum, and more.

Travis didn’t wake up, and finally passed away March 6.

    Say his name.

Without illegally imported cheap labor, inflation would actually match the trillions created from thin air, that predictably accelerated by the predictable “keep things afloat via massive deficit spending” during the CCP virus which also installed the Manchurian Candidate and his open border policy.

Tyson Is Hiring New York Immigrants for Jobs No One Else Wants
Meatpacker is seeking 52,000 new employees for factory jobs Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia migrants hired for Tennessee plant
    March 11, 2024

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-11/tyson-is-hiring-new-york-immigrants-for-jobs-no-one-else-wants

For politicians in Washington and New York City, an unprecedented stream of asylum seekers presents an intractable problem with no easy answers. For companies like Tyson Foods Inc., struggling to fill unpleasant jobs with a US unemployment rate of 3.9%, this new population presents an alluring opportunity.

Tyson is joining the nonprofit Tent Partnership for Refugees, which was founded by Chobani yogurt magnate Hamdi Ulukaya, with a plan to hire some of the 181,400 migrants that have come through New York City’s intake system over the past two years. The meatpacker already employs about 42,000 immigrants among its 120,000-strong US workforce.

“We would like to employ another 42,000 if we could find them,” said Garrett Dolan, who leads Tyson’s efforts to eliminate employment barriers such as immigration status.

“We’re recognizing there’s not a lot of people that are going to be working labor-manufacturing jobs that are American,” [based upon what you’re willing to pay and what Americans are paid via gov’t handouts to NOT work – W] Dolan said, adding a large portion of new hires “are going to come from refugees and immigrants, so we’re now in the business of strategically thinking that through.”
