Wreaths Across America on Wednesday is retelling the tragic yet inspiring story of the World War II sinking of the troop ship Dorchester, the heroic sacrifice of the “Four Chaplains” aboard, and the bravery of the Black Coast Guard steward who gave his life swimming through icy seas to rescue a shipmate.

The 368-foot steamship Dorchester, operated by the War Shipping Administration, was part of a convoy that left New York in January 1943 bound for the Army Command Base at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland.

After midnight Feb. 3, 1943, the Dorchester was torpedoed by a U-boat in the Labrador Sea off Greenland and went down in 20 minutes, according to official records.

A total of 675 of the 904 aboard drowned or died of hypothermia in the frigid waters in what was believed to be the worst single death toll for a U.S. convoy during WWII.

On Wednesday, the 78th anniversary of the Dorchester’s sinking, Wreaths Across America will pay tribute to those who died with a special Facebook Live event beginning at noon Eastern from the Balsam Valley Chapel in Maine.

The Dorchester’s loss is remembered most for the sacrifice of the “Four Chaplains” — two Protestants, a rabbi and a Catholic priest. They were all Army first lieutenants who went down with the ship.

When the torpedo hit, the chaplains guided men below decks to the lifeboats and handed out life jackets. When the supply ran out, the chaplains gave away their own life vests to four men who had none, survivors said. They then linked arms, offered prayers and sang hymns as the ship went down.

“I could hear men crying, pleading, praying and swearing. I could also hear the chaplains preaching courage to the men. Their voices were probably the only things that kept me sane,” survivor William Bednar said in a 1997 interview with The Baltimore Sun.

Survivor John Ladd recalled the chaplains giving away their life vests, according to the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation. “It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven,” he said.

Lt. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister from Pennsylvania; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, a Reform rabbi from New York; Lt. Clark V. Poling, a Reformed Church in America minister from Ohio; and Lt. John P. Washington, a Catholic priest from New Jersey, were each posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart.

There were attempts in Congress to award the four chaplains the Medal of Honor, but the efforts did not succeed under the strict guidelines for awarding the medal.

Instead, a Special Medal for Heroism was authorized by Congress and awarded by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1961.

When the Dorchester was going down, the Coast Guard cutter Comanche ignored the threat of another U-boat attack and raced through heavy seas to pick up survivors.

The Comanche lowered a cargo net, but many of those in the lifeboats were too weak and numbed by the cold to climb aboard.

Steward’s Mate 1st Class Charles Walter David Jr., 26, of New York City, known for his fierce loyalty to his ship and shipmates despite the second-class status afforded Blacks during World War II, jumped into the lifeboats and began hoisting the survivors aboard.

In the course of the rescue mission, Lt. Langford Anderson, the Comanche’s executive officer, slipped and fell into the frigid waters. Without hesitation, David dove into the icy sea and swam to Anderson’s rescue and brought him to the net.

After helping the last survivors scramble aboard, David went up the net himself to the Comanche’s deck, but his friend, Storekeeper 1st Class Richard ‘Dick” Swanson, could make it only halfway up, after being in the freezing water, according to an account by Dr. William H. Thiesen, the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area historian.

From the Comanche’s deck, David shouted encouragement: “C’mon Swanny, you can make it.” But Swanson couldn’t move. David went down the net again and lifted Swanson to safety.

Several weeks later, David died of pneumonia at a hospital in Greenland from the hypothermia he suffered during the rescues.

“Despite his secondary status in a segregated service, Charles Walter David Jr. placed the needs of others before his own. For his heroism, David was posthumously awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Medal and, in 1999, was recognized with the Immortal Chaplains Prize for Humanity,” Thiesen wrote.

In 2013, the Coast Guard named a Sentinel-class fast response cutter the Charles Walter David Jr. in honor of his exemplary service.

  6. Good morning! Temp at 37 again and, when I look out the window, I can tell even more snow has melted overnight. Works for me! But it’s still dark so I can’t tell what is on the horizon – light rain, supposedly – thick fog last night. Got my notice from the VA that I need to schedule my “annual” check-up. Pfttt! Frankly, I’m dreading it and they had better NOT pull this mask BS again – I will turn and walk right the fuck out!!!

    My friend, Marilyn, called me….she has lost another grandchild, another suicide (her SIL, with whom I had worked a few times painting, hung himself in their garage). And from what she told me, his parents are pretty much the ones to blame. They treated him abominably! But on a good note, her daughter, Danelle, and her 3 kids are doing great and she gets to spend a lot of time with them. LanieBell is still deeply attached to her and, when they can’t be together, they chat on Facetime. They live about 35 minutes away, in Durango, CO where it is too expensive for Marilyn to live.

      we’re still hovering below 30* but we’re supposed to get some sunshine today–we’ll see. we’ve got to bring in more firewood and split up wood to make kindling. we have a whole lot of ginormous split logs that are too huge for anything till you’ve got a good fire going.
      so if i disappear for a while later this morning, you know why.

    Far too many cultural changes for the worse have happened because far too many people bought the “diversity is our strength” and the “love is love” mantras. Both are cultural poison because both drag your attention away from a person’s character and merit and play to narcissism. Many people of color have come to believe in and rely on their skin color as the sole determinant of their worthiness. Implicit in this belief is that dark skin is good, white skin is bad.

    Gay people and trans people have come to believe that their value as human beings derives from their sexual partners or their identification as the opposite sex. Or no sex. Or both sexes. This is shallowness and narcissism. Such criteria say nothing about a person’s charity, decency, honor, or accomplishment. Both color and sexual orientation have absolutely nothing to do with a person’s virtue or merit and yet many people are hired for solely these characteristics.

    It is past due that we jettison gayness, blackness, and transsexuality as legitimate criteria by which we judge whom we will hire, whom we will fire, whom we will give our business to, and who has good character. If we want the best we must hire the best, not the darkest or the gayest or the most flamboyant. We must go back to hiring those who have valuable experience and skill fixing things, writing things, running things, building things, operating on things, figuring things out, and creating works of art and beauty. A black dot on a huge white canvas being sold for thousands of dollars and passed off as serious art indicates a culture in deep decline, one whose tenants refuse to do the hard work but would rather loftily pontificate about how the canvas makes him lonely and misunderstood and primal and maybe I’m really gay.

    The level of incompetence in American life and business is staggering. Most of this incompetence stems from race and sex programs such as DIE (Diversity, Inclusion, Equity). Anti-Christian, anti-White sentiment also siphons off too many highly competent people and leaves the dross. The incompetent, always seeking to take the easy way out rather than doing the work, will always find some sucker willing to buy “DEI” in order to assuage a conscience scraped raw by the constant badgering of anti-White racists and gay people (or trans people) who demand you not only approve of their lifestyle but embrace it. No thanks.

    Most rational Americans have had their fill of the cultural corruption DIE has wrought upon America. They have had their fill of affirmative action hires who plagiarize, steal, and obfuscate to screw whitey over in some weird maniacal and vengeful form of reparations for which they don’t qualify.

    Most Americans have also had their fill of gaysplaining and gay-glamorization. They have had their fill of transsexuals and trans promoters telling us that men are women and vice-versa, when it is clear that both are lies. We also can’t keep our children safe from such predators so long as DIE and drag queenery are acceptable in polite circles and in schools. The teachers’ unions should be ashamed of themselves for keeping children uneducated but sexually active and perverse beyond their ability to process it correctly.

    I don’t care what color your skin is: Can you do the job well?

    I don’t care with whom you sleep: Keep it to yourself and do the job for which you were hired.

    I don’t care about your history month or your rainbow flag, your gender symbols, or your sparkly drag queen eyelashes. Save it for the night clubs and your private narcissism parties. Stop inflicting it on normal people.

    Meanwhile learn to code. Learn to fix a clogged drain. Learn to build a bridge that won’t crumble. Learn to do real mathematics and astronomy. Learn some history, for God’s sake. Learn to write and use correct grammar. Learn to operate on eyes, faces, gall bladders and toes. Learn to do legitimate scientific research. Learn how to think rationally and stop blowing with every wind of change. Some changes truly suck; the hyperemphasis on race-gay-trans is the biggest sucker out there. It sucks the air and life out of a society and it must be stopped.

    1. Hear, hear! I couldn’t have said it better myself! Something similar happened when I moved here, initially to Lincoln since I expected better job prospects there. I discovered pretty quickly: no degree, no job! I worked for a Design Engineer firm for several years in VA – I was familiar with blueprints; electrical, plumbing, & HVAC drawings; getting permits/approvals from the City; etc., etc. When I saw the ad for secretarial support for a Design Engineer firm, I thought, yes, here it is! Oh, I was in the running but….I hadn’t gone to college so they hired a 21 year old college graduate (just a general degree, mind you) over my 20+ years of admin experience. That was when I realized…I might as well move closer to HB and the rest of my family in Norfolk since all my years of experience meant nothing to these cretins! SMH

      1. i remember when i took Latin in college–in the evenings because i was working full time days to support me and my son. during the summer sessions–we met 2 evenings a week and day time students could also join in with us at night if they wanted to take a summer session.
        the Latin teacher praised the 4 of us in her evening class in front of the summer session classes all the time.
        she’d say–look at these people–they work during the day and come here at night. they are turning in their projects, passing their exams and not complaining…while you people (the regular day students) can’t complete anything–wanting extensions–it’s too hard. GROW UP, she told them. these people (us again) are DOERS–they know how to get things done…something future employers will look for and reward.

    Witnesses report Lankford was beyond amazed. “Wow! Golly gee wiz, mister!” Lankford had said before agreeing to concede to open borders and include funding for Ukraine and Israel even though that has nothing to do with immigration.

    House Speaker Mike Johnson has dragged Lankford through the proverbial coals for accepting such a deal. “Have you been such a fool, such a dolt, such an idiot, as to compromise on immigration for a set of paltry beans?” Johnson screamed. “And as for your precious beans here they go out of the window!”

  20. Just spent over an hour on the phone with my Sis – sorry, Pat, she’s got first dibs on the “Our Journey Together” pictorial! But you are on my list for the 9/11 books! Hallelujah, she is finally going to quit driving the bus altogether after May and she is also getting rid of all her chicken, geese, goats, etc. as well as the feral cats that are always around. She is keeping her 4 best laying hens for the eggs. Her back/neck is getting progressively worse and her back doctor is doing cartwheels that she has finally come to her senses! When she has x-rays, they always make a comment about her spine looking like the spine of someone 102 years old! Oh, and we came to an agreement – I get Mom’s recliner when she goes! LOL

      1. Oh, she is amazing! And the kids love her soooo much! She rarely has to raise her voice but makes uncommon sense and maintains an even keel with them. They know exactly what she expects from them and where they stand, and they scramble all over themselves to please Miss Carol! And she’s been doing this there now for at least 20 years so EVERYONE knows Miss Carol! Many of them have stayed close into adulthood, too.

          my MIL was a bus driver. i think i told you that story. she drove her day routes, but then also took sports teams to their games. when she passed away–there was a snow day at school and a bunch of kids and teachers came to her funeral.
          then when it was time for the hearse to drive her body to the grave site, it couldn’t make it up the small hill and they had to PUSH the hearse…betcha Mom loved that…lol

      1. we had to get a new one last year–ours stopped working. it’s the same model and company but we had to order it on line. it came and hubby tried it out and they completely revamped it “for safety reasons”…hubby hates it now. it practically takes 2 people to operate it efficiently

    Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration recently agreed to a proposal that could make it easier for migrants to get temporary jobs in state government.

    “Hotel owners and restaurant owners coming to me: ‘Can you send some of the migrants up here? We need them.’ I hear this in every corner of the state,” Hochul said Tuesday at an Albany-based press conference when asked about the program.

    The Civil Service Commission voted to approve the measure on Jan. 18 and is working with agencies to implement the changes, which include dropping typical application requirements like proof of a high school diploma or proficiency in English.

    “I have 10,000 openings in the New York State workforce. From our operations to SUNY, I have 10,000 openings. So this is to give options to people but to say we are working intensely to get work authorization — these are all legal people,” said Hochul.

    The goal is to make it faster for migrants to get jobs once they get work authorization.

    Hochul is eyeing 4,000 entry-level posts that are currently unfilled within state agencies, including clerical or administrative roles, technical support, equipment service and repair and food services.

In the parable, Dionysius is dismayed by a court flatterer named Damocles, who showered the tyrant in remarks about his posh and lavish lifestyle as a king. In his annoyance, Dionysius asks Damocles,“Since this life delights you, do you wish to taste it yourself and make a trial of my good fortune?”

    In his experience, as Damocles slipped into the daydream of ruling a kingdom, he observed a razor-sharp sword dangling from the ceiling directly above Dionysius’ bed where he laid his head and where it dangled by a single strand of horse hair.
