Jaguarundi

They are carnivores, hunting small animals such as birds, mammals, and reptiles.

They are primarily terrestrial, preferring to hunt from the ground, however they are both excellent climbers and swimmers.

They are usually solitary, although are sometimes found in pairs. They have litters of up to 4 kittens.

Interesting Jaguarundi Facts

They are about twice as big as a house cat

This makes them pretty big, but this is still small compared to the cougars or jaguars which also inhabit the region.

They are similar in appearance to weasels and otters

They have elongated bodies, short legs, a long tail, and small squished faces.

They are very shy

You will struggle to see these cats in the wild as they are shy and reclusive. This partly explains why so little is known about them.

They are usually solitary

They have sometimes been found in pairs, but this is likely mothers and older offspring or mating pairs.

Their closest relative is the cougar

However, cougars are much bigger than the medium-size jaguarundi.

The oldest fossil of a jaguarundi dates to 0.5 million years ago

This fossil is from the late Pleistocene era and was found in Brazil.

They have a big range

They can be found all the way from Argentina to Mexico.

They are active during the day

This is a little unusual for wild cats. They seem to prefer hunting in the mornings, which may be because it helps them avoid other wild cats.

They are terrestrial

While other wild cats inhabiting forests may prefer to stick to the trees, these cats hunt primarily on the ground. However, they are also proficient climbers.

They can swim across rivers

These cats often inhabit rainforests, where they will swim across medium-sized rivers.

They can leap as high as 2m into the air

They do this when hunting birds.

They are vocal

They have been recorded making 13 different calls, including screaming, purring, whistling, and yapping.

They have a tendency to steal chickens

They are often found eating domestic chickens, leading to conflict with farmers.

They have litters of up to 4 kittens

These kittens live in dens constructed in dense undergrowth.

  1. Morning, Pat! Wheezer was out and about already when I got up at 4:30. When I looked about 15 minutes later, I could tell he had eaten some of the remaining food and discovered him on the chair, waiting for me. Uh-oh! I caught a whiff of cat poop when I went outside….sigh…I was hoping not to need a litter box on the patio….go poop outside, Wheezer!!! He tried to follow me inside again but when I went back out with more food for him, that redirected his attention….FRESH FOOD!!! So much for following me inside….LOL

    I fell asleep in my chair yesterday watching football with hubby. this cold is kicking our butts!
    hubby’s about a day behind me though. I am sleeping better and starting to feel a little better but he’s not gargling like i was so he’s still congested.

      i’ve seen videos of a winery in South Africa–the owners were murdered and the villa was looted. the vines are rotting without care.
      everyone has their strengths. watching football yesterday, a large percentage was black–they’re great athletes–but would they make great male ballerinas? no
      instead of finding ways to build themselves up, they choose to tear the white farmers down…sad

      1. The reality of the human condition is that dwelling just under the surface is the specter of tribalism; another of those traits that at one time may have helped to preserve the species. Juxtaposed with the complexities of “modern” society, it becomes, shall we say, inconvenient.
        EVERY race may revert, in a heartbeat, to more primitive motivations.

          1. You may have a point, but…other races may be more subtle in that manifestation.
            Japanese & Chinese are very homogeneous populations yet we don’t ascribe to them, as readily, the same racial motivations that we do with regard to blacks & whites.
            I’d maintain that their homogeneity bespeaks a racism as certain as what we see in the west. Ask any Asian victim of Imperial Japan in the 30’s & 40’s whether the Japanese were racist.
            Then go further back to the Mongols dominating the Chinese. 🤪

  5. I was talking to my Sis about buying frozen meals – I mentioned that I loved Marie Callender’s peach cobblers but they weren’t being sold anymore. She mentioned one that Banquet was putting out, then said something about what to watch for on the labels of frozen meals. They are required to put notification on the label if anything is bioengineered, such as bacteria-engineered ingredients (like the RNA they’re putting in some foods now). I had picked up a couple of the Banquet pies on Wednesday to try and they do not have the bioengineer marking – and quite tasty, I might add! I also checked all of my Healthy Choice frozen meals and they also are not bioengineered. At least that simplifies things a bit instead of having to search thru the list of ingredients. It will always be at the bottom somewhere.

  7. Well, my order of BF mini’s is out for delivery via UPS….I probably should shovel the front porch but they’ve been here many times and are used to it! LOL – besides, there’s only about an inch or so. Temp was down to 14 at one point during the night, 17 when I got up and it’s up to 23 now. Still cloudy, tho, and it was really windy yesterday…hope that’s not the case today since all the feeders need to be refilled.

    1. have you ever been on a cruise? my boyfriend when i was 18 won a cruise for 2 to the Bahamas in a church raffle. we flew into Florida and that’s where we left from. I wasn’t impressed. tiny spaces. you didn’t eat at your own table–there were 3 other couples at the table. you could eat all day long, but if you didn’t like to sunbathe, there wasn’t much else to do, except gamble. Everyone on the cruise won it the same way. then one day we all traveled to a private island for a luau and another drawing to see who would win a million dollars. wasn’t my boyfriend…lol
      anyway, a neighbor of my mom’s also won the cruise so he kept an eye on us…LOL

I did wonder if it might be fun to try one of those windjammer cruises briefly….that didn’t last long! LOL – the only time I went out on the ocean, per se, I got sicker than a dog! No thanks!

    Researchers had to look all the way back to the early 1700s to find a comparable event, though it is believed the Irish protestors at the time were still hung over and rioting over wanting more whiskey. “We thought that Unrest of 1716 may have been the last sober riot,” Rumsey said, “I guess we were wrong.”

    At publishing time, Dublin authorities were reportedly trying to decide between facing additional sober rioters or attempting to ply the mob with alcohol.”

    TUCSON, AZ — Former police officer Derek Chauvin was charged with yet another appalling atrocity today after allegedly assaulting a fellow inmate’s shiv with his body while serving time for the 2020 death of George Floyd.

    “The sheer heinous monstrosity of this man is disturbing,” said Federal Correction Institution spokesman Greg Albertson. “According to information we were given by the victimized inmate, Mr. Chauvin stubbornly stood in the way of this gentlemen’s crudely made prison shiv. Mr. Chauvin then repeatedly leaned his body into the shiv without the shiv’s consent. We are currently taking disciplinary measures against Mr. Chauvin and pursuing additional criminal charges.”

    Chauvin is serving simultaneous sentences for civil rights violations and second-degree murder. A fellow inmate at the facility claimed to have witnessed Chauvin’s brutal attack on the shiv. “Dude has no right to get in the way of a shiv like that,” said convicted felon “Sneaky” Pete Ramirez. “That man’s shank was just minding its own business and doesn’t need some evil white man imposing his privilege. It’s just wrong.”

    Though Chauvin was listed as being in serious but stable condition, officials at the prison vowed to do whatever would be necessary to keep him in harm’s way. “He may have survived his assault on the shiv,” said Albertson, “but the American public can rest assured he won’t get away with this.”

    At publishing time, the prison was preparing to move Chauvin to the most dangerous section of the facility for his own safety as soon as he recovered from his injuries.”
