Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette was born November 2, 1755.  This article from Mental Floss details 10 interesting facts you may not have known about her.

Born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, Archduchess of Austria, the woman known as Marie Antoinette became Queen of France and Navarre on May 10, 1774. Her marriage to Louis-Auguste was designed to create peace between Austria and France after the Diplomatic Revolution of 1756 and the onset of the Seven Years’ War. She survived shifting political sands of palace intrigue and upheaval between European countries but couldn’t survive the revolution boiling over in her own adopted nation. Here are 10 facts about a woman we love to make up myths about.

Marie Antoinette was only 14 years old when she married the future Louis XVI.

Marie Antoinette became a queen as a pawn, a child bride at 14 paired with a 15-year-old Dauphin to seal the union between two countries that had previously been at odds. The marriage took place by proxy on April 19, 1770 in Vienna, with Marie Antoinette’s brother standing in for the groom; a ceremonial wedding occurred May 16 at the Palace of Versailles.

Marie Antoinette wanted to ride horses but rode donkeys instead.

Looking to connect with her hunting enthusiast husband, Marie Antoinette sought to learn horseback riding, but was told (particularly by her escort to France, the Count of Mercy-Argenteau) that it was far too dangerous. Fortunately, riding donkeys was deemed acceptable, so the court sought calm, pleasant donkeys for Marie Antoinette to ride. She grew so enamored of her donkey-accompanied treks into the woods that she would host processions into the forest as often as three times a week with onlookers gathered for the spectacle.

Marie Antoinette gave generously to others.

The flattened historical view of Marie Antoinette as a puff-headed monster who loathed the poor obscures her generally kind, giving nature. She founded a home for unwed mothers, visited and gave food to poor families, and, during the 1787 famine, sold off the royal flatware to buy grain for those in need. Her generosity wasn’t solely institutional, either. One story shows her jumping quickly to the aid of a vintner who was hit by her carriage, paying for his medical care, and supporting the family until he was able to work again.

Marie Antoinette’s spending wasn’t the main cause of the French Revolution

It’s easy to see Marie Antoinette and all of Louis XVI’s court as profoundly out of touch with the people of 18th century France because they continued a lavish tradition of royalty in the face of crushing debt and rampant squalor. However, the idea that Marie Antoinette’s expensive whims were to blame for the country’s economic woes is a myth.

When the couple ascended to the throne, the country was already in deep trouble financially, and Louis XVI’s monetary policies failed while he sent massive amounts to support the American Revolution. Propaganda of the time that was typically aimed at kingly mistresses was aimed at Marie Antoinette (since Louis XVI had no mistresses), and populist presses depicted her as being even more extravagant than she was.

Marie Antoinette never said “let them eat cake.”

Anti-royal propaganda of the era was so effective that we still believe it to this day, including the idea that Marie Antoinette’s response to the plight of the French not being able to afford bread was “Let them eat cake.” The next time a friend brings that up at a party (happens all the time, right?) you can bet all the money in your pocket that it’s not true. Or, at least, that there’s no record of her having ever said it. On the other hand, stories of oblivious royals suggesting richer pastries when bread’s not available date back to the 16th century, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau told a similar story about “a great princess” in Confessions, but it’s doubtful he was referring to the then-teenaged Marie Antionette.

Marie Antoinette had a peasant farmyard built at Versailles.

Marie Antoinette can’t escape all accusations of extravagance, though. Like other royals, she had expensive tastes, but her construction of a replica of a peasant farmyard where she and her friends could dress up like shepherdesses and play at being poor farmhands was beyond the pale. Built in 1783, Le Petit Hameau (“The Little Hamlet”) looked like a real farm except the farmhouse interior’s opulence was fit for a Queen.

Marie Antoinette loved children.

Despite not consummating their marriage until seven years in, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI eventually had four children: Marie Thérèse in 1778, the Dauphin Louis Joseph in 1781, Louis Charles in 1785, and Sophie in 1786. Sophie died before her first birthday, and Louis Joseph died at age 7 (probably from tuberculosis), but Marie Antoinette also adopted several children. They included the daughter of a maid who died, and the three children of an usher following his death. When some loyalists attempted to rescue her from the Revolutionary forces, she responded that she “could not have any pleasure in the world” if she abandoned her children.

Marie Antoinette could have been rescued from execution.

After Louis XVI was executed, Marie Antoinette—then called Widow Capet and prisoner 280—was imprisoned in the Conciergerie. Her friend Alexandre Gonsse de Rougeville visited her wearing two carnations, one of which concealed a note promising her bribe money to help her escape. He dropped it while in her cell and either it was picked up by the guards, or Marie Antoinette read it and scribbled an affirmative response that was then read by the guards. On the night of the attempted escape, the guards were bribed and Marie Antoinette was brought down to meet her rescuers, but one of the guards foiled their plan despite already having pocketed the bribe.

Marie Antoinette apologized to her executioner.

For someone who lived such an extraordinary, lavish life, Marie Antoinette’s final words were profoundly humble. On her way to the guillotine, the very instrument of death that was used to kill her husband 10 months prior, she accidentally stepped on the executioner’s foot and said, “Pardon me, sir. I meant not to do it.”

Marie Antoinette was buried in an unmarked grave, but didn’t stay there.

After her execution at 12:15 p.m. on October 16, 1793, Marie Antoinette’s body was dropped into a mass grave in the Madeleine cemetery, which was closed the following year because it had reached capacity. During the Bourbon Restoration following the fall of Napoleon, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI’s bodies were exhumed on January 18, 1815, and given a royal burial at the Basilica of St. Denis just a few days later. Their remains are still there, but the Expiatory Chapel dedicated to them was designed in 1816 on the site at the Madeleine cemetery where they’d previously been unceremoniously interred.

Judge Engoron is a political hack who ruled against me before the trial even started. He is doing the dirty work for the Democrat Party. I was not even given the option of a jury, This Rigged Case should have never been brought, but since it was, it should have been in the Commercial Division, but Engoron WOULD NOT LET GO OF IT. He fought us, sanctioned us for no reason, fined us big money, never gave us even a one day delay. This is his big chance, and he was not going to let it go. In the meantime, they “lost” their Star Witness, and my Financial Statements are GREAT! There was no fraud, so they are working with the corrupt A.G. whose campaign was “I will get Trump,” to develop something, anything. They even go back to 2014, past the Statute of Limitations, to look at a “low ball” offer I made for the Buffalo Bills. Someone else offered much more, so what? Now they come up with something called “disgorgement.” I never even heard of the term. WITCH HUNT!!! ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!

In recent weeks, Americans have been horrified to see students and faculty at Harvard and other once-respected universities expressing support for the savages and jihadists who attacked Israel. We spend more money on higher education than any other country—and yet, they’re turning our students into Communists and terrorist sympathizers.

It’s time to offer something dramatically different…

  10. I am sick of this…people need to frickin’ get OVER themselves. birds have to be renamed because of racism? PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD FOOD AND NECESSITIES BUT THIS IS A PRIORITY TO SOME?????

    entire article

More than a hundred bird species are about to be renamed because their monikers have been deemed “offensive” and “exclusionary” by some due to their connection to the “racist” pasts of the people who the birds were named after.

The American Ornithological Society, an organization responsible for standardizing English bird names across the Americas, announced on Wednesday that dozens of birds in U.S. and Canada will be renamed because birds who were named in honor of people can be upsetting to some, The New York Times reported.

“There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today,” Colleen Handel, the society’s president and a research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska, said.

“We need a much more inclusive and engaging scientific process that focuses attention on the unique features and beauty of the birds themselves,” she added. “Everyone who loves and cares about birds should be able to enjoy and study them freely—and birds need our help now more than ever.”

“We’ve come to understand that there are certain names that have offensive or derogatory connotations that cause pain to people, and that it is important to change those, to remove those as barriers to their participation in the world of birds,” she continued, NPR noted.

Some of the birds who will be affected include such fine-feathered creatures as Gambel’s Quail, Lewis’ Woodpecker, Anna’s Hummingbird, Bullock’s Oriole, Bewick’s Wren, and many more, NPR noted.

The Audubon’s shearwater, who was named after the famous bird illustrator James John Audubon, will be among those renamed because Audobon was a slave owner who adamantly opposed abolition, the Times noted.

The Scott’s oriole will also get a new name because it was named after U.S. Civil War General Winfield Scott. Scott led a force of thousands who removed the Cherokee Indians from their land, as part of the Trail of Tears, PBS noted.

The move to change the birds’ names comes from birders who were upset about the connection to historical figures. In 2020, following the death of George Floyd, the organization received a petition from the Bird Names For Bird’s group, which pointed out that the names were “isolating and demeaning reminders of oppression, slavery and genocide.”

“We’re really doing this to address some historic wrongs,” Judith Scarl, the executive director of the American Ornithological Society, said, adding that the change “will engage even more people in enjoying and protecting and studying birds.”

The renaming of the birds is expected to begin next year, starting with 10 birds and eventually working to 70 to 80 bird species. The new birds’ names will based on their habitats or distinct features, NPR noted.

“Donald Trump Deserves a Fair Trial: Donald Trump has always played to courts of public opinion. But now he faces judgment in courts of law, under very different rules. His critics and opponents celebrate this moment and the prosecutors responsible for it, believing that the criminal-justice system’s standards and procedures will emphatically limit Trump’s ability to lie, to demagogue, and, above all, to escape responsibility. Trump, it’s often said, enjoys no greater or lesser latitude than any other criminal defendant. One wonders if Trump himself truly understands what that entails.

But do Trump’s opponents truly understand it either?

The criminal-justice system is built from the ground up to protect defendants’ rights, even while seeking to punish them. The canonical account of our criminal-justice system, after all, is Blackstone’s: “For the law holds, that it is better that ten guilty persons escape, than that one innocent suffer.” “The reason is,” John Adams added in 1770, “because it’s of more importance to community, that innocence should be protected, than it is, that guilt should be punished.” — The Atlantic

Our Take: “Wow. The Atlantic, for those who don’t remember, was the Liberal Rag that put out the infamous “Covid Amnesty” editorial in 2022. They’re a Mind-Mover within the Marxist-Communist-Globalist paradigm.

Now, a negative way to parse this headline is to suggest that the Atlantic board knows Trump’s trial isn’t going to be a fair one, but the fact that they’re seeding it to an audience we consider unreachable is further circumstantial evidence that Trump’s Trial isn’t just going to happen DURING his campaign for the 2024 election, it’s going to BE his campaign.

It’s also going to set more Actual and Mass Psychological precedent than we can imagine. And ALL eyes in the nation are going to be on it. If you don’t think this was planned at this point, you probably can’t be helped.” — Burning Bright

If I can eat it, I’ll pick up a loaf and be able to eat some sandwiches again. I thought maybe I could at least eat bread for a grilled cheese sandwich but the nasty taste still bleeds thru w/white or wheat bread.

  15. “Weird: Halloween Over But Colin Kaepernick Is Still Pretending To Be A Football Player”
    SPORTS · Nov 1, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

LAS VEGAS, NV — Despite the fact that Halloween ended last night, unemployed political activist Colin Kaepernick was still seen this morning pretending to be a football player.

The former San Francisco 49er walked through Whole Foods in football gear, forlornly placing a bag of Caeser salad in his shopping cart. “Hey there, sir. Dressed up for a late Halloween party?” asked the cashier as Kaepernick came to the checkout aisle. Though there was no response, the cashier attempted to carry on the conversation. “Looks really good though! Your costume, I mean. Pretending to be a football player?”

Kaepernick sighed before paying for his items and walking out into the parking lot. Witnesses reported seeing a passing car stop as he was loading his groceries into his vehicle. “Hey, didn’t you hear? Trick-or-treating was last night! Ha ha!” taunted one of the vehicle’s occupants. “Yeah, only total losers wear their costumes the day after Halloween!” Kaepernick, having heard enough, reportedly attempted to rifle a loaf of bread at the mocking driver, but his errant throw was intercepted by a grocery store employee.

At publishing time, other witnesses reported seeing Kaepernick knocking on the door of Allegiant Stadium to ask the Raiders if they had any candy left over and also if they were maybe looking for a quarterback.”

  24. so Schiff claims a residence in MARYLAND is his PRIMARY residence. his “condo” in CA is also listed as a primary residence. hmmmm…primary is main. how can you have two primaries?

    entire article
If one were to compile a list of hypocritical, clueless members of Congress, Adam Schiff (D-CA) would be near, if not at, the top of the list. Now, as he is engaged in a campaign for a California Senate seat, we find he claims as his primary residence a 3,420-square-foot house — in Maryland.

For more than a decade, California Senate hopeful Rep. Adam Schiff has claimed his primary residence is a 3,420 square foot home he owns in Maryland, according to a review of mortgage records.

At the same time, Schiff has for years taken a homeowner’s tax exemption on a much smaller 650 square foot condo he owns in Burbank, California, also claiming that home as his primary residence for a reduction in his tax bill of $7,000. He did not take an exemption on his home in Maryland.

While Schiff has signed documents asserting both the Maryland property and the significantly smaller Burbank condo as his primary residences, tax records indicate that he paid his California property taxes in 2017 with a check featuring his Maryland address – the only year he paid with a personal check. And a review of past comments, pictures shared on his public social media, and records indicate Schiff makes his full-time home in Maryland.

It’s likely that, since he claimed his homestead exemption on the California property, he meets the legal requirements of residency; presumably, if he has a driver’s license, it’s a California one.

But what about the ethical issues? It staggers belief that he spends much, if any, time in a 650-square-foot condo; that’s essentially a hotel suite, and it’s very likely that he uses it as a crash pad while campaigning in the state he supposedly represents.

Granted, Schiff is one of the most reliable people in Congress: Every time he opens his mouth, something daffy comes out. He doesn’t seem to even understand the workings of the Congress of which he is a member. Even so, Schiff is the front-runner in the California open primary, in no small part due to constant missteps by his equally (or even more) clueless and feckless opponents.

Electing Schiff to the Senate, which at the moment seems likely, would simply be another facet of the American republic’s descent into kakistocracy.

Would it be too much to ask, though, to demand that Representatives and Senators live in the district or state that they, you know, represent? It’s not asking too much, but the practical solution is another matter. California’s requirements for Senate and House members are simple:

Senate: At least 30 years of age, citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and resident of California when elected

House: At least 25 years of age, citizen of the United States for at least seven years, and a resident of California when elected

The requirement of “resident of California” presumably could be met by the possession of a California driver’s license or state ID and the filing of California state income taxes. So Schiff may be meeting the letter of the law, but it’s arguable that he is not complying with the intent of the law. It’s difficult to see a fix for this short of a constitutional amendment stating that elected officials may not maintain any residence other than the one in their state of residence, and that, honestly, just isn’t going to happen. So, while the optics may be bad, expect Adam Schiff, whether he be in the House or Senate, to continue this practice.

    .@WillieGeist
: If Donald Trump’s convicted, “do you actually still believe [he] should be president?”

    @GovRonDeSantis
: “No, that will not happen…it would be fatal in a general election. I don’t think the party should should nominate in that situation.”

  26. i posted above from julie kelly some stuff…but i am still digesting it.
President Trump has EVIDENCE that jack smith and ultra maggot or his administration talked. then ultra maggot gets nara to revoke his security clearance because it was still active thru DOE. so they basically KNEW which docs he had and then revoked his clearance, reclassified the docs and then charged him?
    none of that is legal.
i hope he does have that evidence and i hope it backfires on the maggot spectacularly
