CANDY CORN!

Candy corn is still one of my favorite treats around Halloween.  I found an article on Better Homes & Gardens about the love it or hate it treat.

Candy corn might be the most controversial Halloween candy. In our experience, people either love it or hate it—and we’re firmly in the “love it” category. We’re not the only ones eating candy corn by the handful: The National Retail Federation estimated that in 2019, 95% of holiday shoppers stocked up on the tri-color treat. Not to mention, it’s consistently the most popular Halloween candy in multiple states.

The little yellow, orange, and white treat is an icon among holiday candies and has a legacy that goes back more than a century. Get the background on how candy corn came to be, discover fun facts, and learn all about how candy corn is made. Try our candy corn recipes and some sweet Halloween decorating ideas that feature the striped treat.

Where Was Candy Corn Invented?

According to oral tradition, George Renninger, a candymaker at the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia, invented the revolutionary tricolor candy in the 1880s. The Goelitz Confectionery Company brought candy corn to the masses at the turn of the 20th century. The company, now called Jelly Belly Candy Co., has the longest history of making candy corn—although the method has changed, it still uses the original recipe. In honor of its Goelitz roots, Jelly Belly developed a candy corn-flavor jelly bean.

How is Candy Corn Made?

Candy corn is a mixture of sugar, fondant, corn syrup, vanilla flavor, and marshmallow creme. The ingredients are melted into a liquid candy—called slurry—colored, and run through a cornstarch molding process to create each kernel. Wooden trays filled with cornstarch are imprinted with rows of candy corn molds, where the layers are individually deposited from bottom to top.

The mixture cools in the tray, which seals the three layers together. The kernels of candy corn are sifted from the trays and polished in large drum pans with edible wax and glaze to create their irresistible shine. It’s also worth noting that, strictly speaking, candy corn isn’t vegan- or vegetarian-friendly. Most formulations contain gelatin or other animal-based ingredients.

What Other Types of Candy Corn are There?

Candy corn is such a popular choice that the mellow creme candies are now available year-round in a variety of colors for other seasonal holidays. Most have the same smooth vanilla flavor as the original, but there are some flavor variations.

For Thanksgiving, serve fall corn, which is brown, orange, and white (the brown section is chocolate-flavored).

Christmas-inspired reindeer corn has the classic vanilla flavor of traditional candy corn but comes in a green, white, and red colorway.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with cupid corn in pink, red, and white.

For Easter, load up on bunny corn in various pastel colors.

You can also find seasonal candy corn varieties in apple, pumpkin spice, and cinnamon flavors.

Fun Candy Corn Facts

We’re all familiar with the classic orange, yellow, and white treats—but some of the facts about candy corn might surprise you!

Candy corn isn’t the treat’s original name

What was candy corn originally called? Fun fact: When the Goelitz Confectionery Company first produced candy corn, it was called “Chicken Feed.” The boxes were illustrated with a colorful rooster logo and a tagline: “Something worth crowing for.”

Candy corn has its own national day

You don’t have to wait for Halloween to indulge in the mellow creme candies. Celebrate National Candy Corn Day on October 30.

More than 17,000 tons of candy corn are produced each year

According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 35 million pounds (or 9 billion pieces) of candy corn are produced yearly.

Candy corn is one of the better-for-you Halloween candies

It contains roughly 28 grams of sugar and only 140 calories per heaping handful—and it’s fat-free!

It has a long shelf life

Once the package is opened, store candy corn covered and away from heat and light at room temperature; it should last three to six months. If unopened, packaged candy corn will last about nine months.

  1. Morning, Pat! Hmmm…no sign of Wheezer since mid-day yesterday…same amount of food remains in his dish and I haven’t seen hide nor hair of him. Hmmm….maybe I shouldn’t have assigned a name to him? 23 degrees now – it always drops a couple of degrees just before sunrise – and cloudy since I can’t see any stars. Heaven knows I ate enough candy corn thru the years!! THE one universal and ubiquitous sign of Halloween for everyone!

      1. Never know but that’s doubtful – once the breeding is done, the female will run the male off and they have no more to do with each other. In some cases, the male will actually eat the newborns.

  2. Hmmm…..strange….

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ JustTheNews: “The United States for the next 90 days will no longer issue new export licenses for ammunition and firearms to non-governmental users globally, except for those in select locations, the Commerce Department said.

The agency “will further assess current firearm export control review policies to determine whether any changes are warranted to advance U.S. national security and foreign policy interests” during the 90-day pause, the department said Friday. “The review will be conducted with urgency and will enable the Department to more effectively assess and mitigate risk of firearms being diverted to entities or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities.”

The agency will still review non-governmental export permits to certain countries, including Ukraine and Israel, both of which are at war after being invaded. Previously issued export licenses are still valid, but applications that are still being processed are paused, the department also said.

The order affects most firearms and ammunition that could be bought in a U.S. gun store, Joanna Reeves, an attorney who specializes in arms export controls, said, according to Reuters. She said she has not seen the Commerce Department take such a wide-ranging measure like this before. “For sure they have individual country policies – but nothing like this,” she said.

U.S. firearms manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson Brands, may be impacted by the ban.”

  3. We grandchildren loved candy corn – especially when Grandpa would strow it out in front of his recliner, calling, “Here Chickie, Chickie!” – like he called the chickens when he strowed out his home-grown dry field corn. We’d pretend to peck it up like his chickens did. We didn’t care about germs when we were kids. Grandma kept the rugs clean enough to eat off of anyway.

is echoing EXACTLY what I have been saying the past few weeks about Congress…

You can bet more than half of our Congress is TOTALLY compromised from blackmail, as a result of their SICK sexual escapades with minors & children overseas.

They are blackmailed, therefore they are EASILY CONTROLLED, and will do EVERYTHING they are told to do by their Globalist masters.

      EVERY. THING.

      Including but NOT limited to…

      ENDLESS money to Ukraine.

      ENDLESS money to Israel.

ENDLESS PHONY “investigations” to keep you distracted.

      NO resolution on border security.

Sign insanely LARGE “onmibus” bills that contain things that are AWFUL for the American people.

Sign bills that help to advance the One World Government agenda. (New World Order)

      Just to name a few…

It’s been like this for DECADES. A majority on BOTH sides are also bought & paid for.

UNDERSTAND…Our government has been TOTALLY HIJACKED through bribery, extortion, and blackmail…They DO NOT WORK for the American people.

The Trump Hating Judge in this case has gone off the rails. The case should have never been brought by the Corrupt, Racist Attorney General, but with any other Judge it would have been dismissed. Their Star Witness admitted he lied, “TRUMP did not Inflate Values.” The Judge says Mar-a-Lago is worth $18,000,000, when it’s 50 to 100 times that amount. I really believe he’s CRAZY! Also, I have a 100% Disclaimer Clause (reader beware!), and Financial Statements are Conservative. NO JURY! RIGGED CASE! He doesn’t care about Justice, but the PEOPLE, Lawyers, and Judges throughout the land see what is going on in his courtroom. Judicial and Prosecutorial Misconduct!!! Banks and Insurance Companies are witnesses for ME. They all made money, NO VICTIMS, No Defaults, No Complaints. This Corrupt Judge doesn’t even acknowledge or accept the decision of the Appeals Court. He Gags and Fines me constantly, for no reason. He should be thrown off the “Bench” as a giant Embarrassment to New York State!

I have just learned that the very Biased, Trump Hating Judge in D.C., who should have RECUSED herself due to her blatant and open loathing of your favorite President, ME, has reimposed a GAG ORDER which will put me at a disadvantage against my prosecutorial and political opponents. This order, according to many legal scholars, is unthinkable! It illegally and unconstitutionally takes away my First Amendment Right of Free Speech, in the middle of my campaign for President, where I am leading against BOTH Parties in the Polls. Few can believe this is happening, but I will appeal. How can they tell the leading candidate that he, and only he, is seriously restricted from campaigning in a free and open manner? It will not stand!

Why didn’t Crooked Joe Biden tell his Injustice Department to file the lawsuits and Indictments against me 3 years ago, instead of right in the middle of my campaign for President? You’re setting a BAD precedent for yourself, Joe. The same can happen to you. These Third World Biden Indictments, which should never have been filed, would have been tried and over with years ago. My SleazeBag Opponent shouldn’t be able to do this during my campaign, OR BEFORE THE ELECTION!

The O’Biden Administration just officially declared WW3. I don’t think people understand that Biden has issued the Declaration of War as per the War Powers Act. He did not do that in Ukraine. We ARE AT WAR RIGHT NOW, and Biden has inserted American troops. Congress has 60 days to approve it or he must withdraw. I predict Hamas attacks in America begin within by Thanksgiving and escalate to Christmas to pressure Congress to authorize it. I predict that MILLION-OR-SO of fighting age single men have been strategically placed (as Michael Yon uncovered) in major cities in the United States, and I believe the terrorist attacks on American cities that are about to begin will be horrendous. Remember, when it happens, it has all been brought to you by the O’Biden Administration, which has always hated America as founded.

      1. Janice Dean on Fox is the one who said the “NE interior:”

According to Wiki: “The Northeastern United States, also referred to as the Northeast, the East Coast,[b] or the American Northeast, is a geographic region of the United States located on the Atlantic coast of North America, with Canada to its north, the Southern United States to its south, and the Midwestern United States to its west. The Northeast is one of the four regions defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for the collection and analysis of statistics.[1] The United States Census Bureau defines the region as encompassing the six New England states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut in addition to the three northern Mid-Atlantic states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some expanded definitions extend south into Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and northern parts of Virginia.”

    1. reminds me about a story my mom keeps telling us. her easy chair sits in the corner of her large bow window. Outside in front of that window sits her glider. She swears a squirrel has been coming up on her porch and hopping up on the back of the glider and looking in her window at her…LOL
she used to see squirrels on the porch and she would chase them with her broom. she doesn’t do that anymore.
hubby and i were laughing, till we went outside and on the sidewalk by the side of the porch that can’t be seen from the porch–because of windbreaks–was a pile a walnut shells.

DC Board of Elections Breach Potentially Impacts Entire Voter Roll
    https://www.secureworld.io/industry-news/dc-board-elections-data-breach

    [From the article:]
“In a recent and concerning development, the District of Columbia Board of Elections (DCBOE) has uncovered a significant data breach that puts the personal information of its entire voting population at risk.
The breach was brought to light after stolen voter data was found for sale on an online forum earlier this month.”

    OP-ED:
Bottom line with systemic election corruption is that, while voter information being sold on the internet (per the article) endangers voters and discourages voting, it’s not the greatest threat all Americans experience. In fact, rampant systemic election corruption determining the fate of MI & America is the greatest threat against our children and grandchildren inheriting usable God-given unalienable-rights. And stunningly, some inside the GOP enable it by suppressing the dissemination of truth about it and pursuit of remedy, while distracting us with “only focus on beating Dems.”

    1. EXCERPT: “All the fish that’s fit to print. The world’s first 3D-printed vegan salmon is currently swimming off the shelves in Austrian supermarkets — and its creator has high hopes for the futuristic filets.

“With the milestone of industrial-scale 3D food printing, we are entering a creative food revolution, an era where food is being crafted according to the customer needs,” said Robin Simsa, CEO of Vienna food tech startup Revo Foods. “We are not just creating a vegan alternative; we are shaping the future of food itself,” Simsa boasted.

The 100% vegan protein-packed fish alternative is comprised of fungi as well as omega-3, all nine essential amino acids and vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, B12 and D2, according to Revo. It contains no sugar, gluten or cholesterol. Revo worked with fellow food startup Mycorena to create a type of mycoprotein, a protein that comes from a fungus, specifically made to be 3D-printed, IFLScience reported.

The product is already sold out on Revo’s website, where it retails for about $7.50. The company currently ships to Austria and Germany and will ship to the rest of the EU countries beginning in October. In response to a comment asking when the food would be available stateside, a representative for the brand wrote: “Hopefully soon!! Stay tuned ❤️🔥.” ….

my mother in law made all her grandchildren quilts, but she never gave the quilts to them. when she passed away, we knew which one had been intended for which kid, so we distributed them and gave them the option to trade. (she tended to use what she had and there was only one quilt that every kid wanted–the one with the quilt top she bought.)
anyway, my son didn’t want his–it was unusual for sure–so he left it at my moms all these years. i brought it home to wash and keep as a spare here.
when i washed it, one of the fabrics (a thinner cotton blend) shredded in the dryer. I didn’t have time to fix it…but now i do. i had to find matching fabric–not identical, just in the same color palette and i had a piece that matched very nicely.
I measured one side of the bowtie square and cut the fabric–only to find out the squares are not square at all–they are pulled and distorted. i will have to use plastic to create templates to cut out the odd shapes…
so i pressing the fabric, when the iron quit.
    WTH?
I don’t think my mother in law wants me to fix this.

    LOL
I have the pieces made and i will be hand stitching tonight after supper.
    sigh
