DIY:Bird Seed Bags

I ran across a wonderful and detailed tutorial on how to make reusable bags from bird seed bags!  The tutorial shows a larger bird seed bag, but these bags can be made using smaller quantity bags as well.

The website is From My Carolina Home.

Begin by cutting the bottom off the first bag.  There are two reasons for this.  It makes the bottom square, and cuts off the former stitching that could harbor seed debris and interfere with boxing the corners.

On the top of the bag, cut two strips off, 3-inches wide each.

Cut through each one crosswise to create two long strips.  Fold the edges to the center.

Then fold in half again, enclosing the raw edges inside the strap. Use clips to hold as pins would leave holes.

Turning to the machine, change the needle to a size 16.  I also chose a thicker thread than the kind I usually use for piecing. Next, lengthen your stitch length.  On my machine, I believe the 2.5 setting gives me 12 stitches per inch, and the 4.0 setting is more like 8 stitches per inch.  If you don’t do this, the closer stitching may perforate the bag too closely in a line and weaken the stitching.

Stitch the handles near the double-folded edge to secure the layers together.  Repeat with the other handle.

Turn the bag inside out, and stitch across the bottom.

Fold up that end, and stitch again for strength.

Box the corner 3 inches.

On the inside top, fold the top edge down one inch, then fold again one more inch.  Insert the handle under the fold, with each end 3 inches from the center.

Stitch all the way around on the lower edge.

Fold the handle up, and stitch again around the top edge.

Voila, all done.  This first bag took under an hour to make.

    1. Morning, Pat! I’m experimenting this morning….again…sigh….I’ve put GT’s food where it was yesterday, with the interior door open about 6″ – Jake is shut in the bedroom, of course! Light on inside, dark on the patio….I want to see if (s)he is curious enough to explore inside….dark here, too, and 55. We may get a few more odd showers but heading into a stretch of temps in the 80’s supposedly, which will help ripen the melons…I hope…some of my issues with WP have been rectified but I’m still being asked to sign in again after signing in on their main page. But now, at least it stops once I click the X to close it. And I still hate the new commenting format but I am becoming accustomed to that now. The others are still having the same issues. I got an e-mail from them asking about my “experience” with CS and I let ’em have it!

      1. Morning Filly!
i was having a log in issue that started a little while ago. it was because i block all pop ups. which was okay. I just hit the option buttons and allowed pop ups for the site. BUT then while i waited for all that to “go thru” the entire box would flicker–almost a seizure inducing flicker. i read that the gravatar thing was the problem. but i put my hand over the section till it resolved and then i was logged in till i closed everything at night.
now i don’t have that flicker thing at all…and yeah i am adapting to the “click” in the reply box before i start typing…

          1. not only that…but like when wp is trying to verify my id.
it’s a browser setting and I could add the blog to my “exceptions” list…but i rather block them all and accept on a case by case basis.

        1. I’ve probably got 4 or 5 in my patio trash can but they’re all crinkled up….I’ll start saving them, tho! They are Pennington seed bags, like this:

            1. Oh, hell no! I don’t save them for anything. The ones I have in my trash now, tho, have had a portion cut off at the top so I’ll start saving them from now on w/o cutting them off. No biggee!

              1. No, I don’t need any – I’ve got bags out the wazoo! The one I use the most I got at a wine tasting festival with my friend, David, many, many years ago in VA! It’s the one I use when I pick my peaches! LOL – I also have one of those apron thingies with pockets you can put produce in as you go thru your garden – I’ve never used it once! Still in the package! And then there are the never-ending WM plastic bags, which (thanks to Mom) I now save and recycle at WM.

Crooked Joe Biden, who is killing the United Autoworkers with his WEAK stance on China and his ridiculous insistence on All Electric Cars, every one of which will be made in China, saw that I was going to Michigan this week (Wednesday!), so the Fascists in the White House just announced he would go there tomorrow. That was the only way to get him out of the basement and off his lazy a..! He has been a complete disaster for all Autoworkers in the U.S., so much do that with his warped plan & mind, their won’t be any Autoworkers left in 3 years. He is destroying our Country, and likewise, destroying the United Autoworkers. When he slowly walks to pretend he is a “picket,” REMEMBER, HE WANTS TO TAKE YOUR JOBS AWAY AND GIVE THEM TO CHINA AND OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES. TURN YOUR BACK ON THIS CORRUPT AND HIGHLY INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT, BY FAR THE WORST IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, AND SHOUT OUT TO YOUR UNION LEADERSHIP TO ENDORSE DONALD J. TRUMP. I have been unfairly sued by the Trump Hating Democrat Attorney General of New York State, Letitia James, over the false fact that I inflated my Financial Statements in order to borrow money from Banks, etc. The Judge in the case, Arthur F. Engoron, refused to allow this case to go to the “Commercial Division,” where it belongs, because he is a Trump Hater beyond even A.G. James, who campaigned against me spewing horrible inflammatory statements which are False & Defamatory. I am not even allowed a Jury! The facts of this case are simple. 1) I AM WORTH MUCH MORE THAN THE NUMBERS SHOWN ON MY FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. 2) I DIDN’T EVEN INCLUDE MY MOST VALUABLE ASSET, MY BRAND. 3) THE BANKS WERE PAID BACK IN FULL, SOMETIMES EARLY, THERE WERE NO DEFAULTS, THE BANKS MADE MONEY, WERE REPRESENTED BY THE BEST LAW FIRMS, & WERE VERY “HAPPY.” THERE WERE NO VICTIMS! 4) ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS THERE IS A STRONG “DISCLAIMER CLAUSE” TELLING ALL NOT TO RELY ON THESE….

    1. OK, I decided to do a little research on my man, MacGregor….I have reason to be impressed!!! Holy cow!! From Wiki:

“After leaving the military in 2004, he became more politically active. In 2020, President Donald Trump proposed Macgregor as ambassador to Germany, but the Senate blocked the nomination. On November 11, 2020, a Pentagon spokesperson announced that Macgregor had been hired to serve as Senior Advisor to the Acting Secretary of Defense,[6] a post he held for less than three months. Trump also appointed him to the board of West Point Academy, his alma mater, but the appointment was terminated by President Joe Biden.[7] Macgregor regularly contributes to Fox News and has appeared on the Russian state-funded channel RT.[8] His commentary has been noted for disparaging Ukraine, immigrants and refugees.[9][10][8]

Macgregor was educated at the Wm. Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and at the Virginia Military Institute, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a BS in general engineering in 1976. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia[3] in international relations in 1987.[4]
      —————-
Macgregor is the vice president of Burke-Macgregor, LLC, a consulting firm based in Reston, Virginia.[16]

In 2012, he challenged general James F. Amos’ stance on the United States Marine Corps. Macgregor argued that the military capability and pertinence of the Marines, along with Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps, made them both “as relevant as the Army’s horse cavalry in the 1930s”.[17] In 2014, he stated that U.S. Army is designed to benefit four-star generals, not brigade readiness.[18]
      —————–
Macgregor was “one of the Army’s leading thinkers on innovation”, according to journalist Thomas E. Ricks. He “became prominent inside the Army” when his book Breaking the Phalanx was published in 1997, arguing for radical reforms.[5] Breaking the Phalanx was rare in that an active duty military author was challenging the status quo with detailed reform proposals for the reorganization of U.S. Army ground forces.[11] The head of the Army, United States General Dennis Reimer, passed out copies of the book, but its reforms failed to win the support of the general officer corps.[12] It advocated that “the Army restructure itself into modularly organized, highly mobile, self-contained, combined arms teams that look extraordinarily like the Marine Corps’ Air Ground Task Forces”.[13] His article “Thoughts on Force Design in an Era of Shrinking Defense Budgets” was published in the Israeli Dado Center Journal.

Many of Macgregor’s colleagues thought his unconventional thinking may have harmed his chances for promotion. While an Army NTC official called him “the best war fighter the Army has got,” colleagues of Macgregor were concerned that “the Army is showing it prefers generals who are good at bureaucratic gamesmanship to ones who can think innovatively on the battlefield,” and some saw him as too blunt or arrogant. Despite his top post-Gulf War NTC showing, his Army career was sidelined. The summer of 1997 marked the third time the Army refused to put him in command of a combat brigade,[3] “a virtual death warrant for his Army career, relegating him to staff jobs as a colonel for the remainder of his service”.[4]

        1. And then there is this….if Esper doesn’t like him, that REALLY cements the issue!!! Esper was a bad choice but Trump didn’t have Flynn advising him then.

“In April 2020, Macgregor was reportedly Trump’s second choice candidate to succeed John Rood as undersecretary of defense for policy, a position given instead to fellow Fox contributor Anthony Tata. According to Politico, Defense Secretary Mark Esper expressed reservations about him.[24][25]”

        2. It just keeps getting better….he understands “Civilization Jihad!”

“On July 27, 2020, the White House announced Donald Trump’s intent to nominate Macgregor as U.S. Ambassador to Germany.[26][27] The nomination was controversial because of Macgregor’s past public statements. He had asserted that Muslim immigrants (referred to as “Muslim invaders”) come to Europe “with the goal of eventually turning Europe into an Islamic state”.[8] He had argued that the German concept of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, used to cope with Germany’s Nazi past and its atrocities during World War II, was a “sick mentality”.[8] Macgregor had said that martial law should be instituted on the U.S.-Mexico border and argued for the extrajudicial execution of those who cross the border at unofficial ports of entry.[8]”

              1. Islam is split into sooooo many different factions; factually, those who want to re-institute the worldwide Caliphate are in the minority. The remaining 3/4 are not interested in that and considering what we have learned, and continue to learn, about our OWN country’s involvement in the destabilization of THEIR countries, on one level, you can’t blame them. Same for Africa – look at what the so-called “civilized countries” have done to that entire continent, not the least of which is Gates! Always under the guise of “helping!” No, it’s NOT about helping OR “spreading democracy!” It is about control and theft of their natural resources.

It’s like being on Tinder, but so much worse.

One of the U.K.’s most infamous dating shows (censored trailer below) was quietly added to the Max streaming service last week, and it’s already causing quite a stir.

The streamer has imported six seasons of Naked Attraction, a game show that promises to “start where a good date often ends — naked.” In each episode, a single “chooser” critiques and eliminates six potential dates standing on a stage by scrutinizing their fully nude bodies, which are gradually revealed one part at a time (faces are revealed last). When only two potential dates remain, the chooser strips out of their own clothes too, giving the remaining two contestants the opportunity to critique them. The final couple then go out on a date, with their clothes on.

  9. this is funny…in the Philippines, an airport screener got caught trying to swallow cash she pinched from a flyer’s wallet. she got fired–but businesses in the Philippines are using the video to promote their products…LOL

If you can eat ’em, sell ’em.

Top food brands in the Philippines are jumping on a case that has gone viral of an airport screening officer in Manila caught swallowing US$300 (S$410) worth of cash pinched from a passenger’s wallet.

Footage from an airport security camera caught the officer stuffing the bills into her mouth while on duty on Sept 18.

She was covering her mouth with a handkerchief, and nearly choked as she tried to hurriedly down what she had in her mouth with water.

But she denied ingesting the money, claiming instead that she was eating chocolates. Still, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) fired her.

OTS chief Ma. O Aplasca said he found her alibi incredulous.

“You don’t eat chocolate that way we saw her in the video clip, almost choking. You don’t need water to down it,” he said.

In any case, the incident has provided food and beverage companies in the Philippines fodder for their online marketing blitz.

Razon’s Zamboanga, which sells a popular dessert of shave ice, evaporated milk, sugar, fruits, nuts and ice cream called “halo halo”, posted on Thursday a photo collage on its Facebook page with the tagline “Snack at the airport: US$300. Snack at Razon’s 130 pesos (S$3.20)”.

The post has over 100,000 views so far.

Lola Nena’s, a popular restaurant chain known for its cheese doughnuts, posted a video on its Instagram account last Friday parodying the money-swallowing incident at the airport.

The video, which has over 3,000 likes, shows “a member of the team” being “caught” on a security camera finishing off a bottle of Lola Nena’s “premium Spanish sardines”.

“She allegedly couldn’t help herself from finishing the whole bottle because it’s so delicious and packed to the brim with zesty sardines and spices,” the account’s caption read.

Authentic Bootleg, which retails offbeat toys online, meanwhile, began selling on its Facebook page its “security starter kit” Halloween costume featuring a handkerchief and a water bottle, “300 US dollars not included”.

It also had the tongue-in-cheek warning: Do not swallow.

BREAKING: Poland is now seeking extradition of Yaroslav Hunka, the 98-year-old Nazi who “fought Russia” and received a standing ovation from the Canadian Parliament—including Justin Trudeau and Volodymyr Zelensky—to stand trial in Poland for war crimes.

This comes as Canada’s speaker of the house, Anthony Rota, resigned from the House of Commons after declaring Hunka “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero…”

Hunka served with the First Ukrainian Division, which was previously known as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Nazi Party’s Schutzstaffel (SS) military branch.

    Absolute humiliation for Canada.

He clarified on his way to a cabinet meeting Tuesday: “As I said yesterday, this was deeply embarrassing for the House and for Canada. It is a good thing that Speaker Rota apologized personally and I’m sure he’s reflecting now on how to ensure the dignity of the house going forward.”

  11. so he doesn’t get a trial at all? judge declares him guilty…moves to dissolve the businesses.

Trump committed fraud while building up real estate empire: New York judge
A New York judge ruled that former President Donald Trump committed fraud for several years while growing his real estate empire known as the Trump Organization.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron ruled Tuesday in a civil suit brought by Attorney General Letitia James that Trump and his company deceived banks and insurers by inflating his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork to close deals and secure financing opportunities.

Engoron found that James proved her fraud claims without the need for a trial on that matter. Her civil suit sought $250 million in penalties, a ban on Trump doing business in the Empire State, and alleges six other counts against Trump and his family. The trial may last through December, Engoron has said.

James succeeded on the first of seven counts, finding that the business certificate filed by Trump, his sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr, former CFO Allen Weisselberg and company controller Jeffery McConney must be canceled.

The attorney general and the defendants must “recommend the names of no more than three potential independent receivers to manage the dissolution” of the companies within 10 days, Engoron said in the 35-page ruling. Engoron also ruled that Judge Barbara Jones would continue to serve as independent monitor of the Trump Organization.

The decision falls just one week before a non-jury trial is slated to commence as the former president also prepares to fight four criminal indictments against him in the span of less than a year.

Engoron also granted James’s request to sanction five of Trump’s lawyers for raising already-dismissed arguments in court, ordering $7,500 fines per attorney.

Defendants will still face a trial on the remaining causes of action before the judge, including conspiracy to falsify records, insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, issuing false financial statements, conspiracy to falsify false financial statements.

A separate ruling is pending over Trump’s bid to sue Engoron, which may have the result of delaying the trial. That decision could come as soon as Thursday.

As part of the lawsuit against Engoron, Trump’s lawyer Chris Kise has pointed to a June appeals court ruling that removed his daughter, Ivanka Trump, from the list of defendants in James’s civil suit. Kise contended that the ruling should effectively toss out the claims against the former president as well.
