Basil

Basil is easy to grow, but it only grows outdoors in the summer once the soil has warmed up nicely—and it’s a great companion to tomatoes! Here’s what to know about planting, growing, and harvesting basil.

About Basil

A member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), basil is one of the most popular culinary herbs. It’s a warm-weather annual herb you can plant outdoors once temperatures are consistently above 50°F.

Basil is not usually seeded directly into the soil; typically, gardeners transplant small starter plants purchased at a nursery. Or, they may start the seeds themselves indoors under grow lights.

Common or sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum, is the most common basil; other types include purple basil (less sweet than common basil), lemon basil (lemon flavor), and Thai basil (licorice flavor)

If you’re planning on making pesto, grow several plants. For other uses, one or two basil plants yield plenty.

Planting

Basil will grow best in a location that gets 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily, though it can perform well in partial sun, too.

Soil should be moderately fertile and moist but well-draining. Basil works great in containers or raised beds, as these allow for better drainage. The pH of the soil should ideally be in the range of 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

If you plan on cooking with these plants, plant in clean soil, don’t use insecticides, and grow them away from driveways and busy streets so exhaust won’t settle on the plants.

When to Plant Basil

To get a jump on the season, start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting outside.

To plant outside, wait until the soil has warmed to at least 50°F—preferably around 70ºF for best growth. Nighttime temperatures shouldn’t drop below 50°F.

Don’t rush basil. Without heat, the plant won’t grow well!

How to Plant Basil

If you are sowing seeds directly into the ground sow no more than 1/4-inch deep. Seeds should germinate within 5 to 7 days. Once they have developed 2 to 3 pairs of true leaves, transplant.

If you are planting the germinated seedlings or starter plants in the ground, space 10 to 12 inches apart.  Basil should grow to about 12 to 24 inches in height.

A 2- to 3-inch mulch of compost or ground-up leaves retains soil moisture and minimizes weeds around the plants.

Tomatoes make great neighbors for basil plants in the garden—and on the plate—so many gardeners will plant the two warm-weather friends around the same time.

Growing

How to Grow Basil

Make sure that the soil is moist. Basil plants like moisture.

If you live in a hot area, use mulch around the plants (the mulch will help hold in moisture and suppress weeds).

During the dry periods in summer, water the plants freely.

After the seedlings have produced their first six leaves, prune above the second set. This encourages the plants to start branching, resulting in more leaves for harvest.

Every time a branch has six to eight leaves, repeat pruning the branches back to their first set of leaves.

Fertilize sparingly throughout the season with a 5-10-5 fertilizer.

After about 6 weeks, pinch off the center shoot to prevent early flowering. If flowers do grow, just cut them off.

If the weather is going to be cold or if a sudden frost is imminent, be sure to harvest your basil beforehand, as the cold temperatures will destroy your plants.

Recommended Varieties

Cinnamon basil, to add a hint of cinnamon to a dish

Purple basil, to add some nice color to your garden (when steeped in white vinegar, it creates a beautiful color)

Thai basil, to add a sweet licorice flavor to a dish.

Harvesting

How to Harvest Basil

Start picking the leaves of basil as soon as the plants are 6 to 8 inches tall.

Once temperatures hit 80°F, basil will really start leafing out.

Harvest in the early morning, when leaves are at their juiciest.

Make sure to pick the leaves regularly to encourage growth throughout the summer.

Even if you don’t need the leaves, pick them to keep the plant going. Store them for later use!

If you pick regularly, twelve basil plants can produce 4 to 6 cups of leaves per week.

How to Store Basil

The best method for storing basil is freezing. Freezing will prevent the plant from losing a good portion of its flavor. To quick-freeze basil, package whole or chopped leaves in airtight, resealable plastic bags, then place in the freezer.

Another storage method is drying the basil (although some flavor will be lost). Pinch off the leaves at the stem and place them in a well-ventilated and shady area. After 3 to 4 days, if the plants are not completely dry, place them in the oven on the lowest heat setting with the door slightly open. Remember to turn the leaves (for equal drying) and check them frequently.

  1. I grow the standard broad leaf Italian basil in a pot every summer – and use it for seasoning marinara sauce and dressing up pizzas and making tomato fresh basil salad with red wine vinegar and olive oil. At the end of the summer, I make pesto (no pine nuts, just put the basil leaves, olive oil, salt and garlic in a food processor) and freeze it in small containers (or you can use snack bags) for making pizzas or seasoning tomato sauce.

There is also a columnar basil that grows upright with smaller leaves.

Here’s a place offering basil seeds from around the world. For the columnar basil – see the last photo here – https://www.seedman.com/basil.htm

Illegal immigrant from Peru charged with murder in Texas, entered US months ago

Roberto Emilio Vasquez-Santamaria illegally came to Texas in May

An illegal immigrant from Peru has been charged with murder after being arrested by police in Texas, Fox News Digital has learned.

Maverick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 64-year-old Roberto Emilio Vasquez-Santamaria was arrested in connection to a homicide that happened Monday in Eagle Pass.

According to multiple U.S. Customs and Border Protection sources, Fox News Digital has learned that Vasquez-Santamaria crossed illegally into Texas in May, and was released into the U.S. with a court date in 2025.

Sources said that the migrant was processed by Border Patrol after promising, in writing, to appear in court for upcoming proceedings. After signing the notice to appear on own recognizance (NTA/OR), Vasquez-Santamaria was transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE).

ICE then released him to a non-government agency (NGO) in Eagle Pass.

  6. “SCOOP: Drag queen teacher allegedly guided students to his sexual drag content on social media”
    LIBS OF TIKTOK
    SEP 20, 2023

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “I wish I could say this was a first, but Libs of TikTok obtained photos of another teacher who is also not-so-secretly a drag queen. Bryce Thomas Van Vreede, who goes by Nova Caine when in drag, is a special education teacher at Pulaski High School near Green Bay, Wisconsin.

We spoke with a concerned parent within the school who told us that Van Vreede had allegedly told students how to find him on social media by providing them with his Instagram and TikTok handles (novacaine_queen), exposing them to the shocking images he had shared of himself. Among the images that students allegedly saw is a nearly nude photo Bryce wore to an “Anything But Clothes” party. He poses with his back to the camera, wearing what seems to be a duct tape thong. As you can see, pretty much nothing is left to the imagination.

In a Halloween post captioned, “Sorry, mom.” he poses in skin-tight leather shorts, a strappy harness contraption, and a whip. I’m glad he apologized to his mother, but he should really be apologizing to the students who were unfortunate enough to see these. What kind of person would deliberately expose children to imagery like this?

Although Bryce made his social media accounts private amid the scandal, some parents suspect he was attempting to groom students by informing them about his alter ego’s social media pages. A parent said, “You can say till you’re blue in the face that he’s not grooming kids, but if you’re directing them to your Instagram, that’s inaccurate…the fact that he put everything to private after this was mentioned, he knew what he was doing was wrong.”

According to our source, when the school administration caught wind of the inappropriate photos, they allegedly did nothing and claimed that it does not affect his professional role. Parents within the school district say they were ignored by the Pulaski High School administration when they tried to confront the school about Van Vreede’s inappropriate actions.

Van Vreede is still employed at Pulaski High School, according to its website. The school did not respond to our request for comment.”

Any rain we might get today will be dwarfed by what is coming tomorrow night and into the week-end – possibly up to 3″ in places but that will be mostly in the east into IA. 11. “A sign of the times…90 years ago. Can it happen again?”

NF: My Mom painted in his style except for her early pieces that she did in modern art class.

allthatsinteresting.com – “The work, titled A Walk in the Woods, was featured on the first-ever episode of Ross’ show that aired live in January 1983. It was the very first piece artist Bob Ross ever painted on air for his television program. The painting just hit the market for a staggering $9.85 million by the Minneapolis gallery Modern Artifact — a price the gallery called a “not-for-sale number,” as they plan to take the piece on tour.

Bob Ross hosted more than 400 episodes of The Joy of Painting during its run on PBS between 1983 and 1994. The show elevated Ross to the status of cultural icon, and his name is still widely recognized today. Known for his calm demeanor and positivity, Ross was a prolific painter who created tens of thousands of pieces during his lifetime. He is often quoted for his mantra: “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

Despite his extensive catalog of work, however, Ross’ paintings rarely go to auction. Ross’ first on-air piece, A Walk in the Woods, bucks that trend. Painted live in January 1983, A Walk in the Woods embodies everything Ross’ paintings came to be known for. Like most of Ross’ work, the piece depicts a tranquil nature scene, painted quickly using a “wet on wet” technique. In the lower left-hand corner, Ross’ signature stands out in red against the natural backdrop.”

  12. “Dove Soap To Replace Bird Logo With More Body-Positive Manatee”
    LIFE · Sep 18, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ — As part of a new marketing initiative, the makers of Dove soap have announced they will be replacing the brand’s longtime bird silhouette logo with a more body-positive image of a manatee.

“This is the new depiction of Dove beauty,” said Unilever marketing executive Marsha Rainwater. “Who wants to look at majestic, graceful doves and thin, statuesque women when you can buy products with fat manatees that have morbidly obese spokesmodels endorsing them? Our thoughts exactly.”

The company made headlines last week when it announced it was partnering with 400-pound Black Lives Matter activist Zyahna Bryant to portray a more inclusive stance on body image. “It helps score us some ‘woke points,’” explained Rainwater. “Plus, we had a ton of excess food left over from a company banquet that we needed to clear out, so having an enormous, insatiable beast roaming the halls is beneficial in other ways, too. It’s a win-win!”

Consumers immediately pushed back against the initiative, for both the spokesmodel and the logo. “Who wants to see that?” said concerned citizen Josiah Smith. “Seriously, I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read about their marketing campaign. Imagine how much soap it takes to wash under that many folds of skin. Actually, I suggest you don’t imagine it.”

At publishing time, Dove executives had put in a request for the production department to up its output due to Bryant reportedly eating all of the bars of soap that had been set aside for the campaign photo shoot.”

  14. “Aging Senators Show Up To Work In Their Hospital Gowns After Dress Code Relaxed”
    POLITICS · Sep 18, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following a change in the Senate’s informal dress code, aging senators were excited to show up to work Monday in their hospital gowns. “This is awkward,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel said when he noticed dozens of senators wearing the same exact thing. “One of us has got to change.”

Officially, loosening the Senate’s informal dress code was motivated by a need to accommodate Sen John Fetterman’s famous hoodie and sweatpants. However, sources confirm Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had an ulterior motive — he prefers the comfort and convenience of a hospital gown.

“I wear the gown under my normal clothes so I can change into them quickly. Like a superhero,” Schumer said. “But now I can drop the facade and just be me. It’s loose-fitting so you can have easy access to my backside to administer vaccines, suppositories, and other medications. It’s great!”

Bernie Sanders confirmed that the new dress code allows him to live a truth he previously hid from the world. “The gown is open in the back. It’s very breezy, which I like,” he said. “Ooooo, I feel it now.”

Sen Lindsey Graham, however, bucked the hospital gown trend by dressing in drag. “It’s time for Lindsey Graham 3.0!” he said. “Fabuloooouuuus!”

At publishing time, the policy had been quickly reversed after Rand Paul showed up in his buffalo hat.”

  15. “Zelensky Passes Around Offering Plate During U.N. Speech”
    WORLD · Sep 19, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

NEW YORK, NY — In an effort to raise more funds to support Ukraine’s war efforts against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had ushers pass around an offering plate during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

“Please give as you feel led in your hearts,” Zelensky said to the delegates as soft music began to play. “It is only through the generosity of people like you that we can continue to simultaneously carry out violent military strikes against the evil Russian invaders and keep making progress in our work to launder massive amounts of money for different corrupt regimes around the world.”

Zelensky has been the target of increased criticism as reports of heavy Ukrainian casualties have circulated, despite Ukraine launching a massive counteroffensive against Russian forces. Public support among the American people for funding the war has begun to wane, with a movement growing in the U.S. Congress to discontinue sending taxpayer dollars overseas to help Ukraine. “Your contributions are so critical,” Zelensky said. “Every taxpayer dollar you send to us helps us spread misinformation and corruption around the world. Thank you for following your hearts and giving to our very worthy cause.”

The delegates of the United Nations eagerly filled the offering plate as it was passed around, providing Zelensky with the money he needed to keep the Ukrainian government operating and furnish all government buildings with PlayStation 5 consoles.

At publishing time, Zelensky had been unsatisfied with the amount and demanded all plates be passed around again.”

“Frontex: Only 8% of EU’s illegal migrants were women last year — The predominant group is that of young males”
    September 20, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: DENES ALBERT

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Last year, the vast majority of migrants smuggled into the European Union were males, with the proportion of females only 8 percent, the European Border Agency Frontex said in its 2023-2024 risk analysis report. In what Frontex terms “clandestine entries,” the leading group of nationals were Afghans (33 percent) followed by Syrians (15 percent) and Turks (10 percent).

The Frontex report also warned that illegal entries are likely to further increase next year: “There is much to suggest that clandestine entry may increase in the next year in line with expected higher migratory pressure at the EU external borders in general,” it said. “At the same time, increased vehicle traffic at select border-crossing points (not to mention possibly altered circumstances while crossing land BCPs during the introduction of the Entry-Exit System) increases the chances of clandestine migrants going undetected, often under life-threatening and inhumane conditions.”

The report also pointed out that illegal entrants come from countries (mostly Afghanistan and Syria) “where some of the largest increases in movements to Europe may be expected.” Frontex also said that in addition to illegal migration, there was also a proliferation of drug smuggling networks into the European Union, with reported drug seizures in 2022 amounting to 1,898 cases and 252 tons of illicit drugs.

For years, critics of mass immigration have noted that most of the illegal migrants coming to Europe are fighting-age males, in sharp contrast to the majority of women who came from Ukraine when the war broke out. In addition, the vast majority of these males are economic migrants who are not fleeing war or persecution.”

“Lockheed Martin Boasts to Investors: Ukraine War Fueling “$10 Billion of Opportunities….Now to the End of the Decade” — The defense industry is bullish about military contracts to supply the Ukraine-Russia war, and replenish U.S. military stockpiles depleted by weapons transfers.”
    LEE FANG
    SEP 20, 2023
    Paid

EXCERPT: “Last week, Lockheed Martin executives dined with bankers at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach, a shimmering resort that sits perched above a seaside bluff in Orange County, Calif. In a presentation, the defense contractor, which produces a variety of missiles, munitions, and rockets, gave a sunny financial forecast for the Ukraine-Russia war. “Just switching gears to Ukraine,” said Morgan Stanley analyst Kristine Liwag, during an investor town hall with the firm. “What’s the opportunity?”

Jay Malave, the chief financial officer for Lockheed Martin, noted that his company is supplying Javelin anti-tank missiles, HIMARS mobile artillery rockets, and PAC-3 air defense missiles, among other missiles and munitions for the war. Lockheed Martin has “visibility” of orders that include “$10 billion of opportunity,” Malave said. The surging growth, including orders to replenish U.S. military stockpiles depleted by weapons transfers to Ukraine, he continued, means “demand is enduring between, frankly, now to the end of the decade.”

    Listen here: https://youtu.be/l81Vs70faE0
The Ukraine-Russia conflict has killed or severely injured over half a million people on both sides. The war, now mired in a brutal counter-offensive by Ukrainian forces attempting to retake territory in the eastern region, has no end in sight. But the war has created unique business opportunities for arms manufacturers and dealers to not only supply Ukraine with weapons but to also refill stockpiles of NATO countries and meet the demand for rapidly growing European defense budgets.

Last week, Reuters revealed that the Biden administration “is close to approving the shipment of longer-range missiles packed with cluster bombs to Ukraine, giving Kyiv the ability to cause significant damage deeper within Russian-occupied territory.” The U.S. is reportedly considering the transfer of either or both the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) or Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles to deliver cluster munitions. Both systems are produced by Lockheed Martin.

The company is apparently preparing for the sale of its long-range missile systems. Malave, during his remarks on September 14th, noted that Lockheed Martin is ramping up production, increasing GMLRS unit production to 14,000 units per year from 10,000 units per year. ATACMS can strike up at to 190 miles, and the GMLRS missiles have a 45-mile range.

The shipments to Ukraine have rapidly exhausted Pentagon supplies, creating new contracts simply to replenish U.S. arms. In late July, the Pentagon released a document detailing restocking deals. Lockheed Martin, which is set to receive nearly $2.3 billion of contracts to restock depleted U.S. weapons stockpiles, is the biggest recipient of contracts. Other recipients of large restocking contracts include Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, BAE Systems, and Oshkosh.

The conflict has also brought considerable fortunes to smaller defense contractors. AeroVironment, the makers of the Switchblade “kamikaze drone” and PUMA drone system, has seen its prospects rise dramatically. Drone revenue grew 45% over the last year, with several orders from the U.S. Army for its Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.”

  19. GOP NYers suing Hochul over no excuse mail in voting
    entire article
GOP elected officials from New York on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul alleging the New York Early Mail Voter Act, which was signed earlier that day, violates the state constitution.

The new act would allow any registered voter to request an absentee ballot and vote by mail during the early voting period.

But the plaintiffs of the lawsuit, which include GOP Reps. Elise Stefanik and Nicole Malliotakis, are arguing that the act goes against Article II of the New York State Constitution.

Article II explains that a voter can only vote by mail instead of doing so in person if they will be absent from their county of residence on the day of the election, or because of an illness or physical disability that keeps them from going to a polling place.

The lawsuit also mentions that in 2021, an amendment to this article called “Authorizing No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting” was rejected by state voters — and that since this amendment was denied, the new law has no legal standing.

The plaintiffs also accused legislature, saying “it has resorted to semantics by simply renaming the measure the ‘Early Mail Voter Act’ instead of the ‘Authorizing No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting’ Amendment.”

One of the sponsors of the bill, Democratic New York State Sen. Michael Gianaris, called for easier participation in elections.
