Vinegar: Cleaning, Removing Stains, and Natural Remedies

Who knew that vinegar could do so much? Here are some of the many household uses for vinegar—from cleaning to stain treatment to relieving insect bites. Discover vinegar’s versatility, as well as when NOT to use vinegar.

There’s a cheap, safe, and effective product that has hundreds of uses: vinegar! Let’s explore all the ways vinegar is useful, from the uncommon to the common.

Vinegar in the Garden

Defeating garden weeds: Spray white vinegar directly on plants that you want to kill, especially weeds in cracks in your driveway! Spray on a dry, sunny day. Remember that vinegar will kill plants you want to keep as well, so be careful and try to apply it directly on the leaves of the weed you want to get rid of.

Soothing insect bites: Apply full strength vinegar to mosquito or other insect bites to relieve the itching. (Caution: Do not do this if the affected area is raw.)

Insect repellent: Rub a solution of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 2 parts water on your skin to help repel insects. (For sensitive skins, dilute the vinegar further.)

Keeping cut flowers fresh: To extend the life of flowers in a vase, add a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to the water, plus a dash of sugar. The acidic vinegar helps to prevent bacterial growth.

White Vinegar and Cleaning

Vinegar is a common ingredient in countless homemade cleaners and is especially helpful for cleaning household appliances.

Coffeepot: Every month, bring a solution of 1 cup of vinegar and 4 tablespoons of baking soda to a boil in teapots and coffeepots to rid them of mineral deposits. To clean drip coffeemakers, fill the reservoir with white vinegar and run it through a brewing cycle. Rinse thoroughly by brewing two cycles with water before using.

Cutting boards: Use white vinegar to disinfect cutting boards, especially those made of wood.

Stovetop: A solution of vinegar and baking soda will easily remove cooking oil from your stovetop.

Oven: For a clean oven, combine vinegar and baking soda, then scrub.

Microwaves: Pour white vinegar into a bowl of water and microwave it for a few minutes, then wipe out.

Dishwasher: Use as a cheap rinsing agent to get your glasses and plates clean. Also, once a year, pour a cup of white vinegar into an empty dishwasher, then run it for a short cycle to get rid of the lime and soap build-up.

Clogged or smelly sink: Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda down the sink, then add 1 cup of vinegar.

Humidifier: Clean the filter on your humidifier by removing it and soaking it in a pan of white vinegar until all the sediment is off.

Tubs and showers: Saturate a cloth with vinegar and sprinkle with baking soda, and then use it to clean fiberglass tubs and showers. Rinse well and rub dry for a spotless shine.

Tile grout: White vinegar is actually safer than chlorine bleach for cleaning grout and caulking in bathrooms and kitchens. Spray, leave for one hour, and then scrub.

Shower curtain: Use a sponge dampened with vinegar to clean shower curtains.

Toilet bowl: Clean and deodorize your toilet bowl by pouring undiluted white vinegar into it. Let stand for five minutes, then flush. Spray stubborn stains with white vinegar, then scrub vigorously.

Windows: Clean windows with a cloth dipped in a solution of one part white vinegar and 10 parts warm water.

Fridge odors: Rid your refrigerator and freezer of bad odors by cleaning the insides with a solution of equal parts vinegar and water, then wiping dry.

Smoke odors on clothes: To remove smoke odors on clothes, hang them above a steaming bathtub filled with hot water and a cup of white vinegar.

Prevent mildew: Wipe down surfaces with vinegar to clean and prevent mildew.

When NOT to use vinegar:

Do not use vinegar on granite or marble countertops.

Avoid using vinegar where there is unsealed grout.

Do not use vinegar on wood surfaces or hardwood floors (or no-wax vinyl floors).

Never use vinegar on your cell phone or computer screen!

Vinegar and Stain Removal

White vinegar is known as an effective stain remover.

Clothes: Vinegar naturally breaks down uric acid and soapy residue, leaving baby clothes and diapers soft and fresh. Add a cup of vinegar to each load during the rinse cycle. It also gets rid of stinky towel mildew and makes clothes more colorful.

For removing specific stains such as ketchup, tomato sauce, etc., spray a little vinegar directly onto the stain and then launder.

Chewing gum: To remove chewing gum, rub it with full-strength vinegar.

Paint stains: Soak paint stains in hot vinegar to remove them.

Shoes: To remove salt and water stains from leather boots and shoes, rub with a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar and 1 cup water. Wipe over the stained area only, and then polish.

Brighten white clothes: Soaking white clothing in vinegar will help bring back their brightness.

Vinegar and Pet Care

Itchy ears: Clean inside of dog and cat ears with a clean washcloth or rag dipped in a white vinegar solution (4 tablespoons water: 1 tablespoon vinegar).

Smelly pets: If your pets get sprayed by a skunk or have other incidents, vinegar can help get rid of the smell!

Vinegar and Car Care

Remove bumper stickers: To remove bumper stickers from car chrome, squirt on vinegar and let it soak in. Next, scrape off the stickers. Decals can be removed similarly.

Keep windows clear: Wipe down windows with diluted vinegar in winter to keep them frost-free. You can also use vinegar spray as a window cleaner.

More Uses for Vinegar!

Sprains: Place a vinegar-soaked brown bag on sprains to ease pain and aid recovery.

Shiny hair: For brunettes, rinsing hair with vinegar after a shampoo makes hair shinier. Use one-tablespoon vinegar to one-cup warm water.

Loosen jar lids: Hold the jar upside down and pour warm vinegar around the neck at the joint between the glass and the top.

Democrat Congressman Calls on Biden to ‘Pass the Torch’ and Not Run in 2024 (VIDEO)

Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips, who has not ruled out running against Joe Biden, has called on the president to “pass the torch” and not run in 2024.

The congressman made the comments on NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

“People want to turn the page,” Phillips said. “I think that’s fair to say. As a Democrat, I adore Joe Biden. He saved this country.

    😂🤣😅

He can cement his legacy. My real call to action right now is not about me. The call to action is to ask the president to pass the torch.”

When asked by host Chuck Todd if he does not want Biden to run for reelection, Phillips said that people “want to move on.”

Maui – Plans for A High Tech Prison Island?
Information forwarded by a reader, I am looking for feedback
    SASHA LATYPOVA

    https://sashalatypova.substack.com/p/maui-plans-for-a-high-tech-prison

This is a quick unplanned post. I am extremely saddened by the destruction of Lahaina on Maui. Ed Dowd noted that the official death toll is 80 but rumors that it could be as high as 500-1000 people. I have gone through several years of severe “wildfires” in CA/NV which affected the neighborhoods I care about, destroyed several houses of my neighbors, resulted in severe damage to the water company where I volunteer as a treasurer (it took a while but we have restored it), displaced many people, and destroyed acreage of forest.

Locally, nobody was confused about the true causes of these fires – over 90% of them were caused by Pacific Gas and Electric company’s equipment blowing up (delayed maintenance is up to 60 years, but PGE is mandated to buy “green” extremely expensive energy), as well as many cases of arson. Paradise, CA fire was most likely a result of some sort of weaponry being tested and deployed.

Climate change is a hoax but climate terrorism is not.

A reader forwarded this information and links about recent relevant events on Maui. I have readers from Hawaii, and would love to hear what you know and think about these developments. Please post in comments:

The government of Hawaii states goal for rebuild is to make the entire island of Maui the first Smart ISLAND. They want the entire island governed by AI as outlined in the Hawaii Digital government summit of 2023 that they have planned to host next month Monday, September 25, 2023 on Maui.

Plans to implement a Digital AI government over Hawaii

“Hitachi recently announced that it has begun operations on the demonstration site for the “Japan-U.S. Island Grid Project” (commonly referred to as the “JUMPSmartMaui”) on the island of Maui, Hawaii, in collaboration with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Mizuho Bank, Ltd. and Cyber Defense Institute, Inc. An opening ceremony was held on Maui to coincide with the launch of site operations.”

“Urbanization” projects long underway (based on Agenda21/ICLEI) in wealthy upscale suburban areas are always sold as “smart”, “diverse”, “vibrant”, “walkable” “green” and “inclusive”. Global capital flows in, property values sky rocket and they become islands of over-overindulgence, multimillion dollar townhomes, condos, apartments, exclusive dining, bars/pubs., Teslas and BMWs.

Looks like the elites want their own pacific island free of all the “dirty people”.

  6. this references the “truths” President Trump posted above about the judge
    FTA
Why do I question Judge Chutkan’s fealty to the judicial code of conduct? Because of something Julie Kelly turned up:

Today Judge Tanya Chutkan warned Trump’s lawyers that politics had no place in her courtroom or in this case.

But here is Judge Chutkan berating a J6er during a sentencing hearing in Oct. 2022.

She clearly expressed anger that Trump was still “free” and not behind bars: pic.twitter.com/BaFEItMGYz
    — Julie Kelly 🇺🇸 (@julie_kelly2) August 11, 2023

So the judge presiding over a case demanding that Trump should be locked up for questioning the election and for events subsequent to the election has already stated on the record her belief that Trump should be locked up for questioning the election and events subsequent to the election. Not only should she disqualify herself, but she should also be ejected from the judiciary entirely for having failed to disqualify.

After all, this is not just any case. It is a case of national consequence, given that the sitting president is attacking his opponent as a criminal and trying to silence him and then imprison him during the lead-up to the election.

I have tremendous disdain for all but a few judges, and those few are politically conservative and understand that they owe fealty to the Constitution and the laws of the United States. They also believe that facts are stubborn things regardless of their inclinations. And then there’s Judge Chutkan, whose apparent unethical conduct is entirely in line with my expectation of America’s judicial class.

  7. cnn writes about President’s “baseless” claims of voter fraud in GA and how his team “hacked” their voting system. But later in THAT SAME ARTICLE, they say an election clerk INVITED his team to look into the system. can’t have it both ways…
    FTA
But about that narrative. If you dig deep into the CNN article, you find something interesting buried well over halfway down, long after most readers have lost interest (assuming they even read past the headline):

Six days before pro-Trump operatives gained unauthorized access to voting systems, the local elections official who allegedly helped facilitate the breach sent a “written invitation” to attorneys working for Trump, according to text messages obtained by CNN.

Investigators have scrutinized the actions of various individuals who were involved, including Misty Hampton, a former Coffee County elections official who authored the letter of invitation referenced in text messages and other documents that have been turned over to prosecutors, multiple sources told CNN.

In other words, if there was a hack, according to CNN’s own reporting on the known facts, there’s no evidence that Trump people either did it or authorized it. Instead, an election official, aware of their concerns, invited them to examine the system.

That’s it, at least insofar as CNN knows, thanks to its exclusive access. I have no idea whether there was some sort of unauthorized hacking into Coffee County’s system or whether the system was corrupted at the time of the election. All I know is that CNN’s headline is greatly at variance with CNN’s facts.

Never forget that we no longer have a media of the type our Founders envisioned, one that would keep the government honest by reporting its actions to the American people. Instead, our media is an endless propaganda machine that exists solely to advance the interests of the Democrat party. A word to the wise: Consume the media’s product with the same care that you’d apply to a piece of fish that’s bristling with bones. Yes, there’s meat there, but you’re very likely to choke to death on it if you’re not careful.

  11. “Rift Opens In Space-Time Continuum As Man Buys Dave Ramsey Book With Credit Card”
    FINANCE · Aug 12, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

ST. PAUL, MN — Local man Dean Richardson caused a rift to open in the space-time continuum this morning when he foolishly used a credit card to purchase a Dave Ramsey book.

“I’m ready to finally get my financial life in order,” said Mr. Richardson as he approached the checkout desk with The Total Money Makeover. “I’m just going to put this on my Masterca–Aaaa!!!!!”

Bystanders reported that Mr. Richardson’s actions caused an instant tear in the very fabric of reality. “Mr. Richardson broke the cardinal rule of financial peace in order to gain financial peace,” said onlooker Thomas Gaines. “It was like he took an elevator heading down in order to go up. He should have known better – Dave is literally cutting a credit card in half on the cover. The man got what he deserved.”

According to his wife, Mr. Richardson had been trying for months to take a course on Dave Ramsey’s financial strategies. “Dean had signed up for Financial Peace University at a church across town. His car broke down though, so he went and bought a brand-new car and put zero money down,” explained Mrs. Richardson. “The class got cancelled, but he saw Dave was doing an event in Chicago. So, he took an early distribution from his retirement account to pay for the registration. Sadly, Dean got sick and couldn’t make it. So, he finally just went to the bookstore with the credit card we’ve maxed out, and I haven’t seen him since.”

At publishing time, Mr. Richardson had reportedly made it back through the rift in space-time and, having glimpsed the future, immediately applied to be a UPS driver.”

  12. Andy McCarthy just laid it out in blunt terms – bear in mind, he is NOT truly a ‘Special Counsel.” The AG can pick whoever he wants to prosecute whoever he wants…”….is supposed to be an attorney who is brought in from outside the government because the DOJ has a conflict of interest….” LOL – Dana just asked him “What shall we call him if we don’t call him the SC, ’cause I wanna be correct?” “Uh, I’m calling it a sham but I think he’s the US Attorney for Delaware.”

Hemmer: “What was the incentive to make this decision? What is the effect of it?”

McCarthy: “Well, it’s a two-fold decision – (1) on the front end, Weiss makes the case against Hunter disappear by not charging it so the statute of limitations is eating all of these charges. This behavior goes from like 2014 to 2018 so almost all of it is done. And on the back-end, the “Special Counsel” designation allows him to write a report. So at some propitious moment next year, during the election season, he’ll drop a report saying, “You know, I’ve looked at this and President Biden had nothing to do with it!…

Remember the WhatsApp message that everyone got spun up about about a month ago? I would remind people, the sequence there is Hunter does this extortionist message where he says his Dad is sitting there with him – they’re pressuring these Chinese guys – and within about 8 days they start sending $5M into the Biden family coffers over the next number of weeks. That call, that WhatsApp message happened on July 30, 2017; the $5M went on August 8, 2017. Today is August 14, 2023. The statute of limitations for most Federal crimes is 5 years, for tax crimes 6 years. All of that stuff is time-barred because Weiss never indicted the case. All he needed to do to preserve this case was file an indictment. Then the SOL would have stopped and you could negotiate a plea agreement from a position of strength.”

The Democrats “Infrastructure” bill was $1.7 Trillion and less than 10% of that money went to actual infrastructure!

Instead it was Green New Deal climate scam spending.

Biden and the Democrats have FAILED!!!

I’ve been in the construction business all my life. Infrastructure spending should be about real infrastructure and should have included spending for warning systems to save lives.

Maui has had wild fires for years. This is a failure that should have never happened.

Bear in mind, I took these from inside, thru the French doors and the patio screens, so the clarity is seriously lacking! I’ve had this first feeder for at least 15 years – best ever at keeping squirrels out! I refilled it yesterday, too!

They ate it all but were still looking for more! There were a bunch of them flying all around as well. I’ve seen this before – were I to open the doors, the entire flock would take to the air in a huge wave.

This one is really hard to see but note that half of the block is already gone – those are 2 finches on the feeder:

  17. Erie County in NY wants to return the illegals dumped there without their input after 2 sexual assaults occurred.
    FTA
Today we learned a second migrant has been arrested on sex abuse charges. The 22-year-old man is charged with sex abuse and unlawful imprisonment for an incident involving a female employee of the very agency providing services to these migrants. This comes just days after a self-purported asylum seeker that was shipped here from NYC was charged with raping a woman in front of a 3-year old child. In addition, we have learned others have been arrested on petit larceny charges. When does it end? The people of Cheektowaga never asked for this. They were never told ahead of time what the County Executive’s plans were with relocating hundreds of self-purported asylum seekers. Now Cheektowaga residents are bearing the brunt of a rise in crime, a feeling of being less safe, the impact of additional strains on police services, and the cost that will inevitably fall on taxpayers. Albany and New York City have not acted with my constituents’ best interests, and this needs to end. Clearly these migrants have not been properly vetted, a concern I have voiced since the beginning. Now the County Executive is worried for our residents? Where was he a month ago? Accusing us of being, in his words, “morally repugnant” for wanting to put our residents first. It’s too late. The damage is done. These migrants need to be returned back to New York City immediately.

I am reading reports that failed former Lt. Governor of Georgia, Jeff Duncan, will be testifying before the Fulton County Grand Jury. He shouldn’t. I barely know him but he was, right from the beginning of this Witch Hunt, a nasty disaster for those looking into the Election Fraud that took place in Georgia. He refused having a Special Session to find out what went on, became very unpopular with Republicans (I refused to endorse him!), and fought the TRUTH all the way. A loser, he went to FNCNN!

  19. “FoxNews.com – Former U.S. Senator Scott Brown claimed he once had to tell President Biden to back off his wife or he’d “kick the shit out of him.” Brown, who later served in the Trump administration as Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, was discussing the relationship he had with Biden when he served in the Senate representing Massachusetts. On the “Burn Barrel podcast,” Brown said he had to give Biden a strong warning during his swearing-in ceremony several years ago.

“I told him I’d kick the shit out of him – I told him to stop, so yes,” he chuckled. The former senator was reluctant to discuss the “old news” but after being prompted to elaborate he recalled the moment calling out Biden “to his face.” “Yes, he didn’t act the way I thought he should, and we called him on it and that’s it,” he responded.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Brown’s story. His account came after Shattuck asked Brown about the public’s perception of President Biden, following controversies surrounding his previously unacknowledged granddaughter. “This thing with his granddaughter really stuck. Also I think people are irked out about all the hair sniffing and things. Women are skeeved out (Wow – other people use that phrase too? I thought I was the only one. Who knew…) by that stuff and he’s not a good guy. You know him,” Shattuck offered to Brown.”
