What Shall We Bake Today?

Today is National Sugar Cookie Day, so I brought my favorite sugar cookie recipe!

FULL DISCLAIMER: I never frost my cookies; i use colored sugars. But this cookie has a nice firm and crunchy texture that would definitely lend itself to icing if desired.

I have over a hundred cookie cutters in shapes for every holiday and some for every day.  I make these cookies several times a year.  The recipe makes a huge can of cookies and you’ll want to store them in a can to keep their crispness.

Ultimate Sugar Cookies

1 ¼ cups sugar

1 crisco stick

2 eggs

¼ cup light corn syrup

1 Tablespoon clear vanilla

1 Tablespoon butter flavoring

3 cups flour

¾ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

Colored decorative sugars

Combine the sugar and butter in a large bowl.  (A mixer can be used, I use my hands.) Add eggs, syrup and flavorings.  In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture. 

Gather the dough and shape into a log and wrap in waxed paper.  I usually chill the dough overnight but it should be chilled for at least an hour.

Cut dough in to hunks and roll out dough on a floured surface.  Cut into shapes and sprinkle colored sugars onto cookies before baking.  Bake at 350* for 5 to 9 minutes depending on the thickness of the rolled dough shapes.

    we had been driving for 2 hours Friday morning when i got from my mom. you can’t come she said. when i asked why, she told me her leg was “leaking” again. she has edema in her legs and if she stands too long she puts too much pressure on her legs and her skin is thin. she said my sister in law was going to take her to urgent care WHEN SHE GOT OFF WORK later that afternoon. I said, we’re already on the road, so we’ll come…and we could take her to urgent care sooner. she doesn’t think she can get into the truck so she said she’d wait. so i said we can at least keep you company while you wait.
    we got there and there was a lot of fluid coming out of a small scratch so i put a non stick wound strip on it and wrapped her leg. my SIL took her to Urgent care and they didn’t admit her to the hospital. so we spent the weekend nursing her and keeping her off her feet.

    we left earlier than usual because there are flash flood watches/warnings all over the area we drive thru.

    once we got home this afternoon, we saw the one hummer feeder destroyed on the ground. coming upstairs i discovered the drip pan ripped off the grill and the bait box chewed opened. and there was poop everywhere!

      1. yeah a real mess!
        we normally bring the feeders in every evening. since we were gone the whole weekend, we moved the feeders up a foot thinking the raccoons couldn’t get them and the hummers wouldn’t be high and dry all weekend.
        we were wrong

    2. With you guys, the back porch berserkers could be raccoons or black bears, marauding cats or lord knows…na not cats, too fastidious!

    3. Oh, wow…when she got off work….ok, I won’t do it….it was a perfect time for you to be there to take care of her, at least. Raccoons are soooo destructive!

      1. yeah, my SIL is a piece of work. this was at 10 in the morning and she got off at 3:30.
        the whole weekend, i sat with my mom and we just talked. hubby was able to get some little repairs done for her and she was sooooo happy about that!
