The History of Salt Water Taffy

Do you ever wonder, “Why is it called ‘saltwater taffy’?” Perhaps you’re asking yourself, “Where did salt water taffy originate from?” Like many favorite recipes, salt water taffy’s history isn’t always clear, but one thing is certain: this American-made candy has been around for over a century and enjoyed by millions. So who invented it, and how did salt water taffy get its name? Read on to learn more about the history of salt water taffy!

Where Was Salt Water Taffy Invented?

Though there are a few popular origin stories for where the term “salt water taffy” came from, the most popular salt water taffy history story claims Atlantic City as its birthplace.

When Was Salt Water Taffy Invented?

Most food historians believe salt water taffy was invented in the early 1880s. The story begins with a gentleman named John Ross Edmiston. The owner of a small boardwalk postcard shop in Atlantic City, Edmiston hired a man named David Bradley to sell taffy alongside his wares. While Edmiston eventually fired Bradley, he kept the popular candy in his shop. One night, an ocean swell flooded his boardwalk shop. In the morning, Edmiston discovered all the taffy had been soaked in salty sea foam.

During his cleanup, a young girl came into the store asking if he still had some taffy for sale. Jokingly, Bradley said that he had some “salt water taffy.” The little girl purchased the taffy and took it back to the beach to share with her friends. Her mother heard the name and instantly loved it, and thus the name “salt water taffy” was born.

Is Salt Water Taffy Really Made With Salt Water?

While the origin of salt water taffy tells us the taffy was soaked by the sea, Since then, salt water taffy hasn’t been caught at high tide., Recipes for salt water taffy vary; none contain actual salt water (and especially not ocean water!). Often, however, both water and salt are usually added at some point during the production process, so the name still fits.

Salt Water Taffy: No Longer Just a Beachside Treat

The word “taffy” was first used in the United States in the early 1800s. While much has changed since then, Americans’ love for taffy has only grown.

Now you know where the name “salt water taffy” comes from, let’s take a closer look at where it first was sold: Atlantic City. This beach side resort destination in New Jersey was a popular getaway for Northeasterners in the late 19th century (and still today). Catering to tourists and weekenders, Atlantic City was full of fine dining restaurants, upscale hotels and gambling halls, and boardwalk games and sweets; to stand out from the competition, a candy shop needed to create demand. Once Edmiston coined the curious term “salt water taffy” the sweet treat only grew in popularity.

Joseph Fralinger, a confectioner in Atlantic City, is given credit for being the first successful merchandiser of the candy. Originally, salt water taffy was something only purchased from an Atlantic City boardwalk stand. However, Fralinger came up with the idea of boxing up the taffy for people to take home. This was a smashing success, and his boxes of taffy sold out quickly. Even today, simple boxes stuffed with individually wrapped taffy remain one of the most popular ways to buy this all-American candy.

Salt water taffy history may have begun on boardwalks by the oceans, but it is now commonly enjoyed as a tasty treat all over the country. Thanks to the pioneers of salt water taffy, this wrapped candy comes in tons of flavors and can be enjoyed anywhere! At Taffy Town, we’re far from any coast, yet have become one of the most popular gourmet taffy producers in the country. Taffy is no longer just a beach side treat.

Taffy Town’s Unique Taffy-making Process

We’ve covered salt water taffy history, but what about how it’s being made today? When it comes to salt water taffy, there’s regular taffy, and then there’s Taffy Town taffy. Those who have tried our candy know that we stand out from the others. But what is the difference that sets our taffy apart?

Traditional salt water taffy production starts by boiling a variety of sugars in a large copper kettle to a high temperature. Then, the sugary mass goes through an aeration process to capture tiny bubbles in the candy. This makes it softer and less tacky. Typically, a pulling machine stretches, twists, and kneads the mixture into a chewy treat. After that, the taffy is cut into pieces and packaged for consumption.

Now for the most important part: our unique taffy-making process that makes Taffy Town taffy the best around! Unlike the traditional method, our process starts with whipping a meringue to create the fluffiest structure possible. We use evaporated milk and real salt in our recipe for a creamy, rich base for our flavors. Try our taffy and you’ll quickly realize that we aren’t your average taffy shop.

Our salt water taffy production process takes three days from start to finish, and our factory is always full of fresh treats! We currently have over 90 different flavors, and we’re always on the hunt for new ones. Each year, we take suggestions from our customers and consumer trend reports to develop our flavors. Our taffy flavors are thoroughly tested for tastiness before they hit the shelves. With our wide selection to choose from, you’re sure to find at least a few favorites!

We’re Keeping the History of Salt Water Taffy Alive at Taffy Town

    1. Morning, Pat! Hope y’all find it dead somewhere…..I was soooo hyper yesterday/last night, I didn’t go to sleep until 3 am! I’ll be ready to drop by mid-day! LOL – but first I finally get my hair cut at 9 am. It’s been probably 6 months since my last one and, man, do I ever need it! I am so sick of my hair getting in my face. If even ONE hair is blowing around, it irritates the heck out of me! But I did a lot of puttering, a little of this and that – cleaned up a couple of my solar lights on my west gates – I’ve had those things since I moved here 10 years ago and they are STILL working. They just needed new batteries and a good scrubbing and it’s all good! And, at some point, mowing and weed eating since it may rain again tonight.

The democrats only needed one Republican to vote with them to continue abortions after week 12, but couldn’t find it. This wouldn’t have been possible without State rep Tricia Cotham. Last month she switched parties and became a Republican, giving them just enough votes to become veto proof. 8. Parents hit out at Waldorf school’s explicit sex ed curriculum featuring graphic pictures: ‘Nauseous’

Parents at the progressive Waldorf School of Garden City, Long Island, are angry and some are threatening to pull their kids out school because of new mandatory sex education for fifth graders that teaches, among other things, oral and anal sex and masturbation — with illustrations.

Part of the new sex ed curriculum, which originated with the Unitarian Universalist Church and is called Our Whole Lives (OWL), was just formally announced to Waldorf parents in March by the school.

It includes a controversial book called “It’s Perfectly Normal” that has been around since the early aughts but which parents say was originally meant for older kids but contains material too graphic for fifth graders.

“It made me physically nauseous,” one mother told The Post. “There’s a whole page on contraception and vaginal and anal sex and more about how it’s perfectly normal. This is clearly agenda-pushing and it’s so outrageous.”

“A Startling Contradiction at the Heart of ‘Our’ Legal System–If the Law Doesn’t Belong to the People, Then What Is It For?”
    AMERICAN HYPNOTIST
    MAY 16, 2023
EXCERPTS: “To begin today’s article, let us start with a simple question: why do we need lawyers?

We ask this question not to cast shade on those within the legal profession who are sympathetic to Americans and true American values (and in case anyone is wondering what “true American values” are, the preamble to the Declaration of Independence spells it out quite clearly), but simply to pose the question itself. We are told, on the one hand, that the “commonfolk” do not possess the competence to interpret the law, hence the need for qualified legal professionals to intervene on our behalf. And yet, at the same time, we are expected to obey this very same “law”, despite the presumption that we aren’t qualified to read or interpret.

In other words, we are faced with two diametrically-opposing assumptions, and are expected to live under both simultaneously. We need professionals to “handle” matters of law on our behalf, and yet we are beholden to abide by it voluntarily and competently—lest we be punished for transgressing it. Obviously, these two assumptions cannot co-exist. If we’re sufficiently competent to abide by the law on our own, then we shouldn’t need legal professionals to handle our matters for us; conversely, if we necessarily require interpreters to intervene on our behalf to operate lawfully, then we shouldn’t be held liable for knowing how to abide by it ourselves.

You cannot have a free society if the very rules that govern that society are indecipherable by the citizens of that society. Everyone—lawyers and judges included—have likely breached at least a couple laws (or codes) in their day, without any knowledge about it whatsoever. Frankly, is it even remotely possible for anyone, professional or otherwise, to know the “law”, as it is written today, in its entirety? Do IRS agents, for example, have the entire revenue code (Title 26 of the US Codes) memorized? And if not, then how can they possibly enforce it in real-time situations? It would be just as absurd to try to play a game of chess without knowing how all the pieces move.

Until the law becomes both decipherable and accessible to the very people who are obligated to follow it, it remains like a twisted game of Russian roulette—anything a man or woman may do (or refrain from doing) could, for all we know, be “illegal”… Or could at least be argued as such by a sufficiently weaselly “legal professional”.

(For what it’s worth, genuine, clinical psychopaths account for about 4% of the population. We don’t mean to convey the impression that it’s somehow completely impossible for common sense or humane outcomes to occur from time to time in our legal system. But the point remains that no such guarantee exists, and the opportunities for morality to prevail are dwindling by the minute.)

A Quick Caveat — With the above having been said, we salute those men and women who signed up to be a part of the legal profession for the right reasons, not knowing the true nature of the game. The system, as it currently stands, punishes those who wish to do good in the world—nonetheless, good and moral people, both inside and outside of the system, are the only barrier we have against absolute chaos. Throughout history unto the present day, the fact that we have any “rights” whatsoever is due to the sacrifice of thousands upon thousands of heroes whose names we’ll never know.
    ————-
True Rule of Law — The rule of law does not exist when the citizens are unable to articulate the very laws under which they are required to operate. To restore America—and all nations—a renaissance in civic awareness is required. When the purpose of the law becomes subverted to serve any aim other than the defense of legitimate rights, then the law itself becomes the greatest source of tyranny.
    ————-
The United States is a Federal Corporation — In case anyone believes that there’s anything valid whatsoever about the “government” as we know it today, let us ask the following question: do we even know the true form of our own government? We are told we live in a democracy; we are also told that we live in a republic; but how does one legitimately prove this? Is there a citation somewhere that affirms this? Perhaps one might look to the United States Codes?

Well, according to said Codes, in Title 28 of the Code, section 3002(15)(a), we discover that the United States is defined as a federal corporation. If one scours the remainder of the code, one cannot find any other definition of the nature of the United States—other sections will tell you how the United States is to be geographically defined, but that’s immaterial to the present discussion.

In the absence of any counter-citation taken from the US Codes, what are we forced to conclude? At present, the answer to that question is unclear.

Of course, you can’t have federal corporations without a federal government, can you? At the end of the day, there NEEDS to be a “chain of authority” (according to the Declaration of Independence, the authority of the government of America ultimately comes from God. To learn more about that, read God and the Declaration of Independence). You cannot have corporations before you have nations (or “body politics”). Alas, the plot thickens…

From the People, to the States, to the United States, to the Corporation — No governmental body, nor agency, nor any other kind of entity—whether governmental or commercial—can exceed the authority of that which created it. Based on the above, one might be inclined to think that the entire picture regarding civic authority we were taught in school was a lie … but it turns out, it’s not so simple. At some point, a corporate “United States” was installed, but that doesn’t negate the entire chain of authority that has always existed above it.

The fact remains that the authority of the federal government is sourced from the authority of the states, which, in turn, derive their authority from the people. We will quote Supreme Court Case Law to demonstrate this. From the Supreme Court Case Chisholm. Ex’r v. Georgia, (Feb. 1794) we read:………….”

NF: VERY informative – have I not said multiple times that the US is not functioning as a Republic, but a Corporation? This is just more evidence. It is very complicated and hard to understand and I only “get” the tiniest bit of it, tbh. I do know that it happened with the Act of 1871, which made DC the center of government.

    1. I have begun commenting on some substacks now and then and I really like Badlands. This is a comment posted there about this subject – it is soooo refreshing to “meet” others who are informed on this subject!!!

“From the Declaration of Independence we derived our “unalienable” rights from our Creator. these include, but are not limited to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Under the Organic (Original) Constitution of 1787 we were a “Republic” which is a nation with clearly defined rights for the people, strict limits on what government could do, and minority rights were protected just as carefully as majority rights.

After the Civil War, the USA was bankrupt. This bankruptcy was expected ahead of time by the global bankers headquartered in the City of London. So immediately after the Civil War their agents gained access to Congress and removed the original 13th amendment, replaced it with a new 13th amendment and engineered the 14th amendment which “removed” those Rights given by our Creator and replaced them, with the help of Congress changing one letter of one word in the Declaration of Independence, and placed us under a system where it is argued and enforced today as if our rights are granted by Government, not God.

The one letter of one word in the Declaration of Independence that was changed was the removal of a “u” and replaced by an “i” changing the word “unalienable” to “inalienable.” A little change that made a tremendous difference. When our rights were “unalienable”, root word “lien” and were given by our Creator, see the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, no entity or person could place a lien on our rights. No one entity or person was higher than the Creator who gave us those Rights.

When the “u” was replaced by an “i” it changed the meaning of everything related to our rights. Now the word was “inalienable”, root word “alien”. What is an “alien?” An alien in a foreigner, someone not a “natural citizen” by birth. To become a “citizen” the “alien” has to go through a process to obtain citizenship and as a result is granted “privileges and immunities” by the government and does not have a claim to “Rights granted by the Creator.” (See the 14th amendment for verification).

Then came the Act of Feb. 21, 1871 where Congress created a Corporation, the UNITED STATES. A corporation has to own something so the corporation was given, by Congress, ownership of what we know as Washington D.C. This owned area of land, being also the site of government that was no longer a Republic, but now a Corporation had the legal effect of changing the President, Vice President and Congress into what today we call the CEO, COO, and Shareholders of a Corporation.

Now the International Bankers of the City of London would loan money to the newly formed corporation the UNITED STATES. As many of you well know and understand, a Corporation exists for one main purpose, to enrich the CEO, COO and shareholders of the corporation at the expense of those who “rely” upon the corporation for the “goods” the corporation sells-think “protection,” policing of professions such as Medicine, Law, Drug companies, etc.

How is the funds borrowed from the International Bankers paid back? It is not all in monthly or yearly payments like we would have to make on a house or car loan. It is by a combination of “control,” think passing laws pushed by the international Bankers who, if the laws are not passed will “call” the loans and by a system that is gradually phased in to vacuum all the money possible from the common people, think IRS.

Those of you were adults in the 1980s, do you remember getting the letter from your bank saying you needed to be sure the bank had your correct SSN by a certain date or the bank would have to close your accounts? Then in the late 1990s the banks switched from returning your canceled checks each month to a system where you had a very small copy of your canceled checks included with your bank statement instead of the actual canceled checks. (Just a copy of the face of the check.)

Now you get a “line item” such as “Check 1224 (of) $345.95 (cleared by the bank on) 5/13/2022. Did you notice the progression? First be sure the banks have the correct SSN (also needed on your income tax forms). Then you no longer get the canceled checks back, just a small copy of them-front page only. Now you just get a “line item,” why?

If you were fortunate, some would say “enough of a pack rat” to save those checks that were canceled and returned to you some 40 years ago AND if you had to write a check to the IRS for taxes owed, you would be able to discover something very interesting. Instead of the checks to the IRS being stamped on the back “Deposit into the US Treasury” so the tax funds collected could go for the operating expenses of the “US Government” you would find that every one of those checks were stamped on the back “Pay any Federal Reserve Bank.”

I can just hear some saying “So what’s the big deal? Isn’t the Federal Reserve part of our government?” No it is not, it is a “central bank” that is in league with the International Bankers the UNITED STATES keeps borrowing money from. The IRS is the collection agency for the Federal Reserve which is in league with the International Bankers! You’ve not been told the truth!

That is just scratching the surface of the deception the Corporate UNITED STATES is engaged in each and every day. You can thank the Politicians who many are Law School Graduates. FYI, nationally one out of every three Law School Graduated can never pass a Bar Exam and practice Law. What do they do? A large number of them become Politicians, nationally, state, or local Politicians who in a large part pass the laws those of us Law School Graduates who passed a Bar Exam have to deal with to protect each one of you.

By now, many of you should be beginning to see why Politicians have one set o rules (laws) for them and another set of rules for the rest of us. Sometimes stated as “Rules for me and not for thee!” Become educated, educate others and we will be able to change our country for the better! And a BIG THANK YOU to Badlands media for the commitment to educate us!”

    entire article

A Biden-appointed US attorney for Massachusetts is expected to resign following a lengthy ethics probe conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general regarding her political ties, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

Rachael Rollins, who was sworn into the role in 2022 after being appointed and confirmed in 2021, will submit her official resignation to President Joe Biden before the end of the day on Friday, her attorney told AP. The DOJ launched its investigation after Rollins attended a Democratic National Committee fundraiser featuring First Lady Jill Biden in July 2022, during which investigators also looked into her travel history and use of a personal cellphone for business purposes, the AP reported.

“She is optimistic that the important work she started will continue but understands that her presence has become a distraction,” the attorney told AP. “The work of the office and the Department of Justice is far too important to be overshadowed by anything else.”

Rollins is represented by former Justice Department Inspector General Michael Bromwich, AP reported. The results of the DOJ investigation have not been released.

The DOJ examined a trip Rollins took to California paid for by an outside group, AP reported in November. The investigation is the second into Rollins, as the U.S. Office of Special Counsel was investigating whether her appearance at the fundraiser violated the Hatch Act — which limits the political activity of federal employees.

Bromwich did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca was in sporadic radio contact with Earhart as she approached Howland Island and received messages that she was lost and running low on fuel. 1. My hair is sooooo completely straight, course and very, very dry. I used to keep it permed but gave up that expense after I was no longer working at the Legion. Plus, the gal who always did it for me retired so it was easy to give up. Once I came to the point where I didn’t GAS about my appearance, I never looked back! LOL
