The History of Salt Water Taffy

Do you ever wonder, “Why is it called ‘saltwater taffy’?” Perhaps you’re asking yourself, “Where did salt water taffy originate from?” Like many favorite recipes, salt water taffy’s history isn’t always clear, but one thing is certain: this American-made candy has been around for over a century and enjoyed by millions. So who invented it, and how did salt water taffy get its name? Read on to learn more about the history of salt water taffy!

Where Was Salt Water Taffy Invented?

Though there are a few popular origin stories for where the term “salt water taffy” came from, the most popular salt water taffy history story claims Atlantic City as its birthplace.

When Was Salt Water Taffy Invented?

Most food historians believe salt water taffy was invented in the early 1880s. The story begins with a gentleman named John Ross Edmiston. The owner of a small boardwalk postcard shop in Atlantic City, Edmiston hired a man named David Bradley to sell taffy alongside his wares. While Edmiston eventually fired Bradley, he kept the popular candy in his shop. One night, an ocean swell flooded his boardwalk shop. In the morning, Edmiston discovered all the taffy had been soaked in salty sea foam.

During his cleanup, a young girl came into the store asking if he still had some taffy for sale. Jokingly, Bradley said that he had some “salt water taffy.” The little girl purchased the taffy and took it back to the beach to share with her friends. Her mother heard the name and instantly loved it, and thus the name “salt water taffy” was born.

Is Salt Water Taffy Really Made With Salt Water?

While the origin of salt water taffy tells us the taffy was soaked by the sea, Since then, salt water taffy hasn’t been caught at high tide., Recipes for salt water taffy vary; none contain actual salt water (and especially not ocean water!). Often, however, both water and salt are usually added at some point during the production process, so the name still fits.

Salt Water Taffy: No Longer Just a Beachside Treat

The word “taffy” was first used in the United States in the early 1800s. While much has changed since then, Americans’ love for taffy has only grown.

Now you know where the name “salt water taffy” comes from, let’s take a closer look at where it first was sold: Atlantic City. This beach side resort destination in New Jersey was a popular getaway for Northeasterners in the late 19th century (and still today). Catering to tourists and weekenders, Atlantic City was full of fine dining restaurants, upscale hotels and gambling halls, and boardwalk games and sweets; to stand out from the competition, a candy shop needed to create demand. Once Edmiston coined the curious term “salt water taffy” the sweet treat only grew in popularity.

Joseph Fralinger, a confectioner in Atlantic City, is given credit for being the first successful merchandiser of the candy. Originally, salt water taffy was something only purchased from an Atlantic City boardwalk stand. However, Fralinger came up with the idea of boxing up the taffy for people to take home. This was a smashing success, and his boxes of taffy sold out quickly. Even today, simple boxes stuffed with individually wrapped taffy remain one of the most popular ways to buy this all-American candy.

Salt water taffy history may have begun on boardwalks by the oceans, but it is now commonly enjoyed as a tasty treat all over the country. Thanks to the pioneers of salt water taffy, this wrapped candy comes in tons of flavors and can be enjoyed anywhere! At Taffy Town, we’re far from any coast, yet have become one of the most popular gourmet taffy producers in the country. Taffy is no longer just a beach side treat.

Taffy Town’s Unique Taffy-making Process

We’ve covered salt water taffy history, but what about how it’s being made today? When it comes to salt water taffy, there’s regular taffy, and then there’s Taffy Town taffy. Those who have tried our candy know that we stand out from the others. But what is the difference that sets our taffy apart?

Traditional salt water taffy production starts by boiling a variety of sugars in a large copper kettle to a high temperature. Then, the sugary mass goes through an aeration process to capture tiny bubbles in the candy. This makes it softer and less tacky. Typically, a pulling machine stretches, twists, and kneads the mixture into a chewy treat. After that, the taffy is cut into pieces and packaged for consumption.

Now for the most important part: our unique taffy-making process that makes Taffy Town taffy the best around! Unlike the traditional method, our process starts with whipping a meringue to create the fluffiest structure possible. We use evaporated milk and real salt in our recipe for a creamy, rich base for our flavors. Try our taffy and you’ll quickly realize that we aren’t your average taffy shop.

Our salt water taffy production process takes three days from start to finish, and our factory is always full of fresh treats! We currently have over 90 different flavors, and we’re always on the hunt for new ones. Each year, we take suggestions from our customers and consumer trend reports to develop our flavors. Our taffy flavors are thoroughly tested for tastiness before they hit the shelves. With our wide selection to choose from, you’re sure to find at least a few favorites!

We’re Keeping the History of Salt Water Taffy Alive at Taffy Town

We’re proud to carry on the history of salt water taffy — one of America’s favorite candies. Did you know that you don’t have to be on a boardwalk to enjoy our wide selection of Taffy Town flavors? 1. Oh, hey! I learned a neat trick yesterday – when I came out of WM, I discovered that my remote entry key fob was no longer working, which is a real PITA! The only door that will take a key is the driver’s door and no way I remember the code for keyless entry! So I looked it up on-line – it will cost at least $100 for a dealer to do it for you (probably more these days) – surprise, surprise – it worked!!!

OK – for those with an F150, F250, etc., I think models from 2004-2014 but don’t quote me on that:

    1. Open the driver’s door, press the “unlock” button on the door and on your key fob – the instructions said just the door but that didn’t work – it did work when I pressed it on the fob as well.

    2. Put the key in the ignition, with the door open, and turn it from off to on 8 times w/in 10 seconds and leave it “on” when you get to 8. The locks should recycle to confirm you are in programming mode.

    3. Push any button on the key fob within 8 seconds to be re-programmed and the locks will cycle again to confirm programming.

    4. Turn the key to the off position and the locks will cycle one more time to indicate end of programming mode.

The JETP plan has broad ambitions, ranging from improving the grid to encouraging renewable energy investment and providing a fair transition away from fossil fuels for workers and communities that depend on them.

At the heart, though, is a concerted effort to speed up the move away from coal in a country with ample resources – by buying out power plants and restructuring debt so they can be closed early.

The US$20 billion promise is only one step. According to BloombergNEF, transition in Indonesia would require US$2 trillion of investment into its energy system through 2050. Reaching net zero by 2050 could cost US$3.5 trillion. BLOOMBERG

    That’s a little alarming

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/05/17/60000-lbs-explosive-ammonium-nitrate-missing-from-train-in-california/

A railcar loaded with 30 tons of the chemical left Cheyenne, Wyoming, on April 12. The car was found to be empty after it arrived two weeks later at a rail stop in the Mojave Desert, according to a short incident report from the explosives firm that made the shipment.

The company, Dyno Nobel, made the report May 10 to the federal National Response Center, or NRC. The report also appeared last week in an NRC database of California incidents managed by the state office of Emergency Services last Wednesday.

Dyno Nobel says it believes the material — transported in pellet form in a covered hopper car similar to those used to ship coal — fell from the car on the way to a rail siding called Saltdale, about 30 miles from the town of Mojave in eastern Kern County.

Ammonium nitrate was the explosive in the massive bomb used in the Oklahoma City terror attack of 1995. It was also the substance that caused a deadly explosion in a warehouse in the port of Beirut, Lebanon, in 2020.

Foul play is not suspected yet, but the loss of a hazardous chemical is just the latest rail problem in the past several months

I discovered that both of my Rose of Sharon bushes are still alive but not thriving…..they need some attention, as does my west bed, and I also saw many a little sapling pushing up where they are not allowed! I need to get my nippers going…and I need to get a new pair. The one I’m still using was an old, old one that Marilyn gave me 5-6 years ago. It is sad in both appearance and performance, really….LOL

  5. “Hungary blocks Ukraine’s EU weapons funding over Zelensky’s plan to blow up key pipeline to cripple Hungary’s industrial sector — Hungary is retaliating against Ukraine as tensions rise”
    May 17, 2023
    editor: REMIX NEWS author: INDEX

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “After leaked documents from U.S intelligence revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky planned to blow up a vital oil pipeline delivering Russian oil to Hungary, the Hungarian government expressed outrage. However, that outrage is now turning into concrete policy moves by the Hungarian government, including blocking €500 million in EU military aid to Ukraine.

A Hungarian government official, speaking to Hungarian news outlet Index, confirmed that Zelensky’s proposed plan to blow up the pipeline, along with new sanctions placed on Hungary’s biggest bank, OTP, have driven the Hungarian government to take action and block the European Peace Facility funding.

As Remix News reported, a leak obtained by The Washington Post revealed that Ukraine was planning to blow up the Druzhba oil pipeline that transports crude from Russia to Hungary. The leaked documents indicate that Zelensky proposed at a February meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko that Ukraine should carry out the action to cripple Hungarian energy infrastructure reliant on Russian oil.

The Druzhba oil pipeline is of strategic importance for the Hungarian economy, and its loss would cause serious problems for the country, according to the Hungarian government source who spoke to Index.

The news that Ukraine was even considering an attack on a NATO country’s industrial sector may mark a new low in Hungarian-Ukrainian relations. One Hungarian security analyst stated this week on Hungarian television that any such attack would have amounted to a terrorist act and led Hungary to activate Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which would require a military response from Hungary’s NATO allies.

The cabinet member told Index that Raiffeisen Bank has a much bigger presence in Russia, yet the Ukrainians have not sanctioned it. Instead, they have exclusively targeted the Hungarian bank. As long as Ukraine does not correct this, the Hungarian position will not change because according to the Hungarian government’s position, “sanctions are written in Brussels, not in Kyiv.”

The government source also made clear that the Friendship oil pipeline is of strategic importance. The southern branch of the pipeline — which the Ukrainian president has talked about blowing up — carries around 8 million tons of Russian oil a year.

The source said the critical nature of the pipeline for the Hungarian economy is well known, which is why Hungary was first granted an exemption from the ban on Russian oil. Government sources said that even if domestic reserves were sufficient for several months, and even if the Adriatic pipeline could make up part of the shortfall, a lack of Russian crude would still be a major problem for Hungarian industry.”

I don’t have the skills necessary in that region of the world to find out but I have to wonder….it was allegedly a multi-million $ payout from an owner of one of THE biggest banks in Ukraine, as well as a number of companies, including in the energy sphere. So I have to wonder – was he connected in some way to Burisma Holdings LTD/Hunter? If it is one of THE largest banks in Ukraine…..😦😕🤔🤔🤨 I did a little basic research and couldn’t find a connection but, once again, they have soooo many links and jinks and jogs, w/o both an accounting degree and a legal degree, most people are totally lost.

  6. “Is peace even possible with someone like Zelensky? Can peace be brokered with an unreliable and untrustworthy Ukrainian president? Hungarian columnist Zoltán Kaszab says a “fuse has blown” in Hungary over leaked Ukrainian plans to destroy Hungary’s industrial sector”
    May 17, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: ZOLTÁN KASZAB via: VASÁRNAP

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “We could go on at length about why President Zelensky would want to blow up a vital pipeline and punish a sovereign country like Hungary for its energy policy, but we will turn a blind eye to that. We must, however, firmly bring to the attention of the Ukrainian head of state that the purchase of Russian oil is not a value choice for Hungary, but a necessity.

We Hungarians do not buy oil from Russia because we want to, but because our pipelines were built in this direction during 40 years of communist dictatorship, and the refinery in Százhalombatta can only process this oil at present. Converting it to a different type of oil and building new pipelines — whether Zelensky believes it or not —will take years, so for the time being, our country has no other option but to source oil from the East, from Russia.

Otherwise, even if this were not the case, Ukraine and President Zelensky have no say in who Hungary buys from or what Hungary buys — just as we have no say in what Ukraine does in this respect.

Budapest is baffled by Ukraine’s supposed plan to blow up vital oil pipelines supporting Hungary’s industrial sector. Hungary is supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war in the largest humanitarian aid operation in its history, and it has helped hundreds of thousands of people who have stayed in Hungary or have passed through as refugees. So, apart from arms, Hungary is giving all the help it can to its eastern neighbor.

In fact, as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a recent radio interview, it is in Hungary’s interest that Ukraine should be a successful country. And this should be true the other way around: Ukraine can only expect help from its western neighbor, from us, if Hungary can help because it has the means. That is why it is so wrong that Zelensky would take irrational revenge by destroying Hungarian industry — and it is not clear why he would even propose this.

There is, of course, an aspect of the case that Ukraine, which is preparing to join NATO, was planning an attack on the critical infrastructure of a NATO member state. In light of this, it would be worth asking NATO headquarters in Brussels just how reliable an ally Ukraine and its current leadership really are. This was not the only crazy thing Zelensky fantasized about in the leaked documents. He allegedly was going to raid Russian villages to further escalate the war; he was also going to ask for more Western weapons with even greater ranges earlier.

Let there be no doubt. The documents that have come to light have not only caused a fuse to blow in Hungary. Now, more and more people are asking the question: Is peace possible with a Ukrainian president who cannot really be taken at his word?”

These are the IDs we found on the border in Yuma, AZ. Why would people drop their IDs you might ask? The answer is simple, so we don’t know who they really are. The green IDs represent people that have been given authorization to stay and work in Mexico, which would disqualify them from seeking asylum in America. Many times people have criminal history’s that they don’t want us to know about, and other times they’re bringing people that aren’t family members and pretending that they are. Some that cross are terrorists. The bottom line is they’ve all been coached by leftist NGOs on how to game the system! It’s called immigration, fraud, and for some stupid reason Biden and Mayorkas allow it!

  13. Sliding down to drop this I’ll read back. I had half of the back yard mowed – finished in front, sides and back – weeded & straightened out my west flower bed…still to do is the small bed where the climbing rose is but I’m getting there. And clean out around the Rose of Sharon bushes. But the steering started going wonky on my mower and I thought I might have to replace the cotter pin again. Nope, not the cotter pin this time – there is a bushing on the steering rod where it attaches to the front axle that is almost totally gone. Jerry can’t get to it right away so it sits in the middle of my back yard until he can get here. Should be within a day or two. Oh, well, sitting out in the rain for a bit won’t hurt it – actually, it will clean the dust off! Got a lot accomplished today! Time to veg out for the rest of the day/evening!

Oh, and I had to fill the Oriole feeder – again! I did it early this morning and it was empty already. Voracious little buggers!!! Hope the case of jelly comes in soon! Ditto for the seed feeder and suet feeder. I am NOT buying any more bird seed until next Wednesday so they’d best rein themselves in!

I learned along the way, usually because something was wrong with the truck and I couldn’t afford to pay to fix it. So I’d pick peoples’ brains and, eventually, someone would offer to help – I always insisted only if I could watch and learn for myself. You should know by now – I don’t like to have to depend on others – too often, they leave you hanging.

  14. “Davos on Steroids: Ultra-secret Bilderberg Meetings commence in Portugal–There is a total media blackout of the upcoming shadowy elite confab.”
    JORDAN SCHACHTEL
    MAY 17, 2023

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The Bilderberg Group, a notoriously shadowy organization with a membership roster that includes some of the world’s most powerful and influential people, are convening their annual meetings this weekend in Lisbon, Portugal.

Oddly enough, there is a complete media blackout in the corporate press surrounding the upcoming conference, despite the significant geopolitical ramifications attached to its members and the agenda items being discussed. Your humble correspondent still cannot find a single story previewing the Bilderberg meetings in the corporate media.

If you’re familiar with the World Economic Forum’s annual closed-door, invite-only Davos confab, then you can get a sense of what Bilderberg entails. Yet Bilderberg is a level up of exclusivity, given that fewer than 150 people usually end up with invites to the conference, as opposed to the thousands who go to Davos. Bilderberg consists only of the very top business tycoons, royals, media influencers, and government power brokers.
    https://www.dossier.today/p/exclusive-the-dossier-acquires-confidential
Independent journalists on the ground, Charlie Skelton and Dan Dicks, believe that the meetings will take place at the 5 star Pestana Palace Hotel in Lisbon, which is noticeably unavailable for reservations this weekend.

(Pestana Palace Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal)

The Bilderberg website has not been updated since 2022, but we do have confirmation that the meetings are taking place via the European Commission website, which noted it on the calendar of two of its top officials. Other than that, there is a total comms blackout concerning expected attendees. The Bilderberg meetings have been a regular occurrence since the mid 1950s, with the inaugural meeting in 1954 at the Bilderberg Hotel in the Netherlands.

Although it is significantly staffed by publicly elected officials, the discussions that happen during Bilderberg conferences remain a closely guarded secret. Unsurprisingly, this has led many to suspect that the powerful globalist ideologues who attend these closed-door wargaming discussions are up to no good. Organizers defend the secretive nature of the conference by claiming that it allows attendees to speak informally among peers.

To get a sense of why Bilderberg conferences are often associated with conspiratorial inquiry, look no further than the roster of last year’s meeting in Washington, D.C.

The meetings included several heads of state and the world’s most powerful spy chiefs. On the American side, it included multiple Biden Administration cabinet level officials, and the likes of the CIA Director, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Eric Schmidt of Google, Sam Altman of ChatGPT, and Peter Thiel, to name a few. On the European side, attendees included the British and French spy chiefs and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, among others. The topics of discussion included:

    1. Geopolitical Realignments
    2. NATO Challenges
    3. China
    4. Indo-Pacific Realignment
    5. Sino-US Tech Competition
    6. Russia
    7. Continuity of Government and the Economy
    8. Disruption of the Global Financial System
    9. Disinformation
    10. Energy Security and Sustainability
    11. Post Pandemic Health
    12. Fragmentation of Democratic Societies
    13. Trade and Deglobalisation
    14. Ukraine

This year’s agenda has not yet been released, and attendees have not yet been revealed. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will be in town, but the only publicly confirmed attendees are EU commissioners Paolo Gentiloni and Didier Reynders Justice. The Dossier will be following up as soon as we gather more information.”
