Beautiful daffodil flowers adorn countless gardens around the world. Delicate and fragrant, they are a true embodiment of the fragile natural beauty. They require some care, which, of course, does not stop stubborn gardeners who want to decorate their home or summer cottage.

Interesting facts about daffodils

They got their name in honor of Narcissus, one of the characters of ancient Greek myths, who was so beautiful that he fell in love with his own reflection.

Botanically speaking, daffodils are herbs.

Daffodils are poisonous flowers, an attempt to eat any of their parts can lead to fatal poisoning.

Perfumers have been making fragrant essential oil from narcissus flowers for over 2,000 years.

In the language of flowers, the daffodil symbolizes selfishness and false hopes.

The ancient Greek goddess Persephone is usually depicted with these flowers.

In total, there are 113 types of daffodils in the world.

Daffodils grow wild only in Europe. The only exception is a single species that grows in Asia.

There is a surprisingly interesting place in Ukraine – the Valley of Narcissuses, a huge nature reserve overgrown with these plants. It is under the protection of UNESCO.

In the modern perfume industry, natural essential oil from daffodils is almost never found. It was almost completely replaced by synthetic.

The English call daffodils spring lilies.

Daffodils bloom for a surprisingly long time, if, of course, you take care of them properly. In this case, flowering can last up to 5-6 months.

The juices of this plant are able to kill the rest of the flora, therefore, before adding daffodils to a bouquet with other flowers, they are first cut off and kept separately for about a day in water so that the poison comes out.

Animals practically do not eat daffodils for the same reason – poison.

In ancient Rome, daffodils were given to commanders who returned victorious from the battlefield.

It is the daffodil that is the symbol of the county of Wales.

On New Year’s Eve in China, daffodils are the main decoration and symbol in general.

According to surveys, in the UK, daffodils are the favorite flower of most residents. Roses are in second place.

    A spokesperson for Clinton took it much more personally.

    “Nothing says deeply-insecure-has-been quite like publishing private correspondence with the hope that people will believe you once garnered respect,” Nick Merrill said to Newsweek. “Feels like the adult equivalent of when a toddler proudly presents you with what they’ve done on the potty.”

    But Trump’s publisher, Winning Team Productions, said that there is no copyright protection for the personal letters.

      Correct. Fauxi was a “beard”; he could fund bioweopons research under the guise that it was “civilian” research, for “Public Health”.

      DOD, State Dept, CIA were all behind it, which is why Tony was untouchable; nobody could get him fired, not even the POTUS, cause he had “friends in high places” protecting him.

      OK, well, that sent me on a journey where I discovered this article – sheesh! Who knew dwarves were so wild and crazy???

      Los Angeles was in the midst of its gilded heyday. Stars such as Jean Harlow and Katharine Hepburn had a huge following, while the love lives of the swashbuckling Errol Flynn and Charlie Chaplin were already legendary.

      This was the height of Hollywood as Babylon, as the new play’s title reflects. Sex and glamour was the name of the game and the dwarves wanted their share. Naturally, as soon as they had money in their pockets, their behaviour did not improve. “You had to watch them all the time,” observed Jack Dawn, the make-up artist on the film.

      The women would proposition studio electricians, while one who called himself The Count was never sober. “Once, when he was due on set, he went missing. Then we heard a whining sound coming from the men’s room. He had got plastered during lunch, fallen in the toilet bowl and could not get out.”

    2. Holy cow! What a horrible production was the Wizard of Oz!!! Good grief!

      “MGM originally cast The Beverly Hillbillies star Buddy Ebsen in the part, but ten days into filming that all changed. Ebsen had a reaction to the aluminium powder in the Tin Man make-up and ended up in critical condition and was hospitalised, experiencing body aches, muscle cramps, and shortness of breath. It was only in hospital that studio heads saw the seriousness of Ebsen’s condition and production was halted until a replacement Tin Man was found.

      Recast with Jack Haley, the make-up was amended to be safer, but the reason for the change was never publicised and even Haley was unaware of why Ebsen was taken off the film. Ebsen was left in a contract dispute with MGM before and complained of breathing problems for the remainder of his life, which he blamed on “that damned movie.”

      The green make up that was used to transform Margaret into the Wicked Witch of the West was toxic and had to be thoroughly cleaned after shooting. Make-up maestro Jack Young explained in The Making of The Wizard of Oz by Aljean Harmetz: “… green is toxic because it’s made with copper. Every night when I was taking off the Witch’s makeup, I would make sure that her face was thoroughly clean. Spotlessly clean. Because you don’t take chances with green.”

      That wasn’t all that Margaret endured, however, as she found herself suffering severe burns. Fans will remember the Wicked Witch’s fiery departure from Munchkinland but while dramatic it was also harmful. Hamilton was supposed to descend while a fire rose up but it illuminated before she descended and she suffered burns on her face and hands. She spent six months recuperating at home and in hospital.

      Her stunt double was next to do a similarly memorable moment but also ended up with burns when a pipe exploded. Stunt player Betty Danko spent 11 days in the hospital and her legs were permanently scarred.

      Another utterly bizarre episode in the production was the snow scenes mid-way through the film. The Making of The Wizard of Oz revealed that the snow used in the sequence was made of crystallised asbestos! That’s right, Judy and co were being doused in carcinogens.

      Sid Luft wrote in his memoir that Judy’s body shape was never going to fit the types that the studio wanted. He wrote that she “unlike other actresses, could not successfully camouflage extra weight, especially because she was dancing and singing in revealing costumes. Just 4 feet 11.5 inches, she could be underweight and still appear heavy or out of proportion on screen.”

      Studio chief Louis B. Mayer at MGM put Judy on a strict diet of “chicken soup, black coffee, and cigarettes, along with pills to reduce her appetite”, according to Biography.com. The actress, who had been introduced to pep pills at the age of 10 by her own mother, was already on a cycle of uppers and downers to get through the exhausting machine of the studio system. Judy was only 16 at the time of The Wizard of Oz. It would be addiction that would kill her in adulthood at the age of 47 in accidental overdose.”

        1. FJB, Decades ago, I lived in the Gardener’s cottage of a former Estate. The long-gone Gardener apparently just tossed out extra Daff and Narcissi bulbs onto the hill behind the cottage. When I arrived, and the hill bloomed, the scent was nearly overwhelming. I knew little about bulbs at the time, and so thought all such flowers were scented. Much to my later dismay, I found out, alas, this was not so.
          After many years of looking for scented bulbs, I somehow discovered McClure Zimmerman, and the mystery was solved; the scented varieties had been supplanted by hybrids, famous for their size of blossoms!
          To the best of my knowledge, this company is ab it for finding these lost species. What a find they are!!

    1. the pizza one reminded me…I played a practical joke on myself the other day. I saved the glass carafe from a mister coffee that no longer worked–in case we broke ours. 2 Halloweens ago, I forgot to put all the decorations back in the box in the basement and i just stuffed them in the glass carafe.
      A couple of days ago I pulled the glass carafe out of the closet to make more room for something else and scared myself! they were 2 HUGE SPIDERS in the bottom–which i realized were plastic AFTER i screamed…LOL

    COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — It’s been about a month since Santino’s Pizzeria in Columbus, Ohio, served up a buzz on social media for its non-traditional hiring sign. About a month ago, the shop hung a sign that says, “Now Hiring Non-Stupid People.”

    The shop says not only did it bring in business from across the nation after the story went viral, but it also served its purpose and got them some employees.

    “We had people call in from Denmark, trying to donate pizzas to buy from us to pass out to the homeless,” manager Heather Stockton said. “We’re fully staffed, we had some great candidates come in, and they’re working out they’re really nice, they’re on time, they’re non-stupid people.”

    Stockton said even a month later, it’s still all customers can talk about.

    Whoopi Goldberg must think that because she’s one of only 18 people to hit the grand slam of awards that she’s special somehow. When she showed up at the Oscars, however, she learned that she’s not.

  50. I have some outstanding news!!! Next Monday, March 20, I will be getting all of my remaining teeth pulled, courtesy of the VA!!! I do have to go to Omaha, however, arrangements have been made for me to catch the VA transit bus in Norfolk at the VFW, which will take me and one other person to Omaha – my apptmt is @ 11, his is at 11:15; they will deposit us at the door of the clinic, pick us up, and bring us back to Norfolk by the end of the day.

    Claudette called and when I said it was a problem to go to Omaha, she stressed that they were doing it as a courtesy since my coverage did not include it, and asked if I was wheelchair-bound. She told me about the transit bus – they pick up people all the way in IA – and said she would transfer me when we finished scheduling, which would be at least 3 weeks away. She clarified that I had 8 teeth left and said something about possible difficulties – I guaranteed her they would have them out w/in the first half hour and told her about the molar I have been putting off pulling myself.

    There was a second or two of silence and she said, “So they’re loose?” I explained the process I follow and she then said, “Hang on, Ms. G…maybe we can get you in sooner…” She came back and said “How’s the 20th?” And I said of March? Because we were looking at mid-April before…”Yes, next Monday!” DONE DEAL! Oh, and I warned her, too! LOL
