11 Fascinating Monarch Butterfly Facts

Learn facts about the monarch butterfly, including how to tell male and female monarchs apart and if monarchs are poisonous.

Monarch Butterfly Host Plant

There’s only one host plant for a monarch butterfly—milkweed! Choose native varieties for your area such as common milkweed, butterfly weed, swamp milkweed and showy milkweed. Create a monarch haven with our complete guide to growing milkweed.

Not All Orange Butterflies Are Monarchs

Soldier, queen and viceroy butterflies all are mostly orange and black and look similar to monarch butterflies. But they all have differences that set them apart. Monarchs have bright orange wings with multiple black veins. Their wings are edged in black with white speckles.

Male Monarch Butterflies

The easiest way to tell a male monarch butterfly from a female monarch is by looking for two dark spots on the hindwings—the female butterflies don’t have these spots.

A Female Monarch Butterfly Lays Hundreds of Eggs

A female monarch in the wild can lay up to 500 eggs on milkweed plants throughout her lifetime. Butterflies raised in captivity can lay even more.

Are Monarch Butterflies and Caterpillars Poisonous?

Caterpillars eat only milkweed, which contains a poisonous chemical that protects them from predators. The chemicals stay in their system to make even the adults taste bad. Bright orange wings let predators know that monarch butterflies are poisonous.

How Long Does a Monarch Butterfly Live?

These gorgeous butterflies are a welcome summer sight, but unfortunately, most of them don’t live long. The adult monarchs you see fluttering through your backyard when the weather’s warm typically live only about 4 or 5 weeks — just long enough to mate and produce the next group. It takes four generations of monarchs to complete their annual migration journey before ending up in your garden again. However, the fourth “super generation” that overwinters in Mexico can live for as long as eight months.

How Fast Do Monarch Butterflies Fly?

It’s all about speed for these butterflies. Monarch butterflies can flap their wings up to 12 times a second when flying at their fastest.

How Far Do Monarch Butterflies Migrate?

Here’s a fun monarch butterfly fact. These amber beauties could fly circles around other species. Monarch butterflies fly a long distance during fall migration, farther than any other tropical butterfly—up to 3,000 miles.

Monarchs Have a Great Sense of Direction

Monarch butterflies don’t need a GPS to locate their migration destination. Many of the gorgeous travelers find their way to the same exact location, perhaps even to one particular tree, where previous generations have wintered before.

Monarch Butterfly Wings Need to Stay Warm

Monarch butterfly wings are fascinating and complex. In order for these delicate creatures to fly, their wing muscles must stay above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Where Do Monarch Butterflies Live?

You can find monarchs everywhere from cities to rural fields and mountain pastures. When breeding, they prefer open areas.

  1. Good morning, Pat and Filly!

Wow – Monarch butterflies are beautiful – the photo of a whole group hanging out together on a branch is stunning.

We don’t get many monarchs or any that look like them here in N FL. Our Fall butterflies are the small cloudless sulphur butterflies that also migrate long distance from South America. I look forward to their arrival as the first sign of cool weather, a welcome relief from the tropical humidity we endure for 3 months down here. They usually fly around my flower beds in pairs.

    2. Speaking of which….an update from Badlands News Brief in my e-mail sent me looking….well, looky here! The bank that closed Donald Trump’s account after J6!!!

EXCERPT: “Signature Bank was closed by New York state financial regulators on Sunday as the fallout from last week’s implosion of SVB Financial Group’s Silicon Valley Bank spreads to other lenders. Depositors at the New York-based bank will have access to their money under “a similar systemic risk exception” to one that will allow Silicon Valley Bank clients to get their money on Monday, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Insurance Deposit Corp. said in a joint statement Sunday.

“All depositors of this institution will be made whole,” the regulators said. “As with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank, no losses will be borne by the taxpayer.”

Signature Bank, a New York state-chartered commercial bank that’s FDIC-insured, had total assets of about $110.36 billion and total deposits of roughly $88.59 billion as of Dec. 31, the New York Department of Financial Services said in a separate statement. Signature Bank representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.”

      https://fortune.com/2023/03/12/nyc-based-signature-bank-fails-closed-by-regulators-fdic-treasury/

“Signature Bank in New York once had a close business relationship with the Trump family, with Ivanka serving on the bank’s board of directors from 2011-2013, but the bank severed ties with President Trump and closed his accounts in protest of the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol and called for his resignation. Two years later, Signature Bank collapsed and was taken over by regulators.” – GP

      1. so do all the people who banked at these institutions now have to withdraw all their $$ and put it somewhere else? taking it in cash would make them targets for thieves the minute they leave the bank, but getting a check seems counterproductive. you take that check to another bank and you’re in the same position in a month…???

        1. I haven’t a clue, Pat – I meant it when I said I know NOTHING about finance beyond the basics: a credit is a deposit, a debit reverses that deposit; here is what I have left after the bills are paid to live on for the next month – that’s it, pure and simple.

            1. The very idea of individual people having sooooo many different bank accounts just boggles my mind, tbh. I have a checking account – ONE – and ONE CC – and nothing else – period! People who have household accounts and clothing accounts and travel accounts and this account and that account – how on earth can anyone keep it straight??!!?? I guess that’s why they have accountants but, then, how do you know you can TRUST that accountant? Way too much for my math-challenged brain!

              1. I understand accounting totally–got a degree in it. what i love about accounting is the balance sheet has to work out. it HAS to or there’s a problem.
it’s banking/lending that boggles my mind. they lend out $$ that i deposit but if that borrower defaults? how do i get my $$?

    1. The administration had to have known on Friday that they were going to protect the big tech SVB depositors…so why did they allow depositors across the country to stew all weekend about their own bank deposits almost encouraging a run on the banks. Just lends more credence to the notion that this was meant to set the stage for some b.s. gvmt digital currency.

Peter Navarro is not happy with Tucker Carlson.

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/03/peter-navarro-who-does-tucker-think-he-is/

Hi. I’m Peter Navarro, it is March 12, 2023.

And here is some breaking news: Fox News show host Tucker Carlson has purportedly sent out a questionnaire on America’s Ukraine policy to a set of Republican presidential candidates.

My immediate thought upon hearing this news was, to speak in the salty vernacular of one of my old Chiefs of Staff at the Trump White House, John Kelly, “Who the hell does Tucker think he is?”

Before I try and answer to that question, settle down all you fan boys and fan girls of Tucker. I like Tucker, and Tucker has been good to me – at least he was up until the point where the Fox brass canceled me from his show. I’ll get to that in a minute; but first, this:

What Tucker is doing seems to be the height of arrogance. In effect, Tucker thinks his ratings are so big that he can set himself up as a powerbroker in the 2024 presidential race as if he were the actual Fox network itself – such questionnaires the sponsorship of debates are typically the province of the network itself, across the cable news diaspora…

Here is my real concern about giving Tucker so much power to influence the 2024 election. Numero Uno is that Tucker Carlson is not a Donald Trump fan. That is certainly no secret as the recent spate of emails and other correspondence that have leaked out from a lawsuit confirm this statement.

Second, his on-air populist, nationalist personality aside, Tucker appears to care more about ratings than policy. Put simply, Tucker is not a MAGA true believer but simply a pragmatist who, like a jeweler with precision taps at the resentments of his audience. This, too, is revealed in the email correspondence recently leaked.

Third, and most worrisome, Tucker ultimately gets his paycheck from Rupert Murdoch and the Fox News Corporation. Yes, Tucker is now walking an interesting tightrope taking on issues that run counter to the globalism and corporatism of Rupert, and he is getting away with it because of the popularity of the show.

But Memo to Tucker: You are just one misstep away from going the way of Lou Dobbs who likewise was very popular…

        1. Yes, I am…that was the overall impression I got from the piece – he has a grudge against Tucker, IMO. But there have been a number of times over the years when I wasn’t at all pleased with Navarro. Nothing specific comes to mind at the moment – just the overall impression of an arrogant, angry, small man with an outsize impression of his own importance.

              1. not saying you are wrong.
all I’m saying is tucker is in for the $$. if he doesn’t have viewers, he doesn’t have a job, so he’s dependent on ratings. truth be damned

              2. I need to add this qualifier: I don’t “trust” ANY of them implicitly – I can count on one hand the number of people in the world I trust to that extent! LOL – I just feel better about Tucker now and Navarro’s overall tone put me off. Probably because it was immediately after being so impressed with the Tucker interview. It felt petty and childish to me.

Disney maintained complete exemption from property & sales tax, tax-free bonds, and their incredible fast track permitting. They also gave big political contributions to DeSanctus. 1. Don’t forget that he was in the JAG Corps and it has been said that he tortured detainees at Gitmo….as for my opinion on torture, I don’t consider water-boarding to be torture when our Navy Seal trainees, among others, can go thru it during training. Some of what was done, however, was simply gratuitous cruelty and entirely unnecessary.

EXCERPT: “Subsequent to earning his J.D., DeSantis received orders from JAG Trial Service Office Command Southeast at Naval Station Mayport in Florida as a military prosecutor. In 2006, he was promoted to lieutenant and worked for the Joint Task Force-Guantanamo Commander (JTF-GTMO) with the title of JTF-GTMO scheduler/administrative officer.

He reportedly worked directly with detainees, performing legal and mission support duties, at Guantanamo Bay Joint Detention Facility until 2007 when he reported to Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado, California.”

Alex Jones says SVB is the start of the globalist plan to collapse smaller regional banks so that they can be absorbed by the 6 Big Banks connected to the Fed Reserve with an end goal to introduce Digital Currency aka CBDC’s as a solution to a crisis they created. 1. Wouldn’t surprise me – my bank was bought by a Canadian bank….it was a So. American-based bank in the first place but, back in 2009, when I moved back here and opened my account, I knew even less about banks than I do now, which is still paltry to say the least! BOW was convenient, only a couple of blocks away from my apartment in Lincoln, and they were giving $100 for those who opened accounts with automatic monthly deposits. Sounded like a deal to me at the time! That is one other big thing on my to-do list — talk to my local bank to make sure they ARE just a local bank before I switch everything over.

    1. “Chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), has revealed that his committee possesses documents showing that the Biden family has been receiving money from the Chinese Communist Party.”

TRANSCRIPT: “We are finally having people cooperate with us,” Comer said to Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “I think we all know the Biden administration is stonewalling, Janet Yellen is stonewalling, not turning over the bank violations. But fortunately, since we’ve last spoken, we actually have bank records in hand.”

“We have individuals who are working with our committee,” Comer continued. “In the last two weeks we’ve met with either these individuals personally or with their attorneys and that that would be four individuals who had ties in with the Biden family on their various schemes around the world.” “So now we have in-hand documents that show just exactly how the Biden family was getting money from the Chinese Communist Party,” he added.

“And, and I’ll tell you, it’s as bad as we thought, Maria,” he said. “It’s very concerning. And, and in a way, I, I’m kind of glad that the, the Biden attorney, Abbe Lowell and the Biden administration’s been stonewalling us because when I requested that information two weeks ago versus today because of what we have in hand now we have a lot stronger case in court for why we need these documents that the Biden family’s withholding and that the government’s withholding.”

“So they have unintentionally helped our case in our quest to get these documents to where we can give the American people the truth and the transparency that they deserve out of their leadership in Washington,” he said.

“Congressman, this is so extraordinary,” Bartiromo commented. “This is the number one adversary of America, and you’re just telling us that the Biden family has accepted money. What does the CCP have on the Biden family, and is that the reason for the soft approach on China?” “Congressman James Comer. Congressman, talk to us about Kathy Chung,” she asked. “She’s coming in to get deposed by your committee. What are you expecting?”

“Well, we’re going to have a transcribed interview with Ms. Chung,” he replied. “We have a lot of questions about her role in moving documents. We all know now that Joe Biden has mishandled classified documents and at least five different locations. We know from text messages and email, she got the job to help with the Biden family and moving documents at the recommendation of Hunter Biden.”

“Given Hunter Biden, what we see from bank records and from the emails and text messages with all the influence peddling he’s done, we wonder why was Hunter Biden so concerned about Joe Biden’s documents?” he went on. “So we have a lot of questions for Ms. Chung, and she’s fortunately going to come in voluntarily and we’ll have an opportunity to hopefully get some answers.”

“Tell me about the bank records. Mr. Chairman, what have you learned from these bank records that you’ve gotten?” Bartiromo asked. “These are Hunter Biden’s bank records.”

“These are people with the different businesses, so to speak that the Biden family w was involved in with respect to in this instance, China,”Comer said. “And what it appears is there were a lot of transfers from account to account to account many transfers on the same day. That’s probably one reason they received so many suspicious activity reports, which are the bank violations from the banks.”

“The banks would look at this like, well, they must be laundering money or something,” he continued. “I don’t necessarily think they were laundering money, Maria. It looks to me like they were trying to hide the source of that money and the source was the Chinese Communist Party.” “So my question to the Bidens, when I get that opportunity, is if you’re conducting legitimate business activities, why so many transfers?” he asked. “Why, why were you trying to hide the source of that money?”

“Wow,” Bartiromo said. “We have to continue digging in on that. Mr. Chairman.”

In the aftermath of the Chinese spy balloon surveilling America unimpeded until it crossed over to the Atlantic Ocean, the FBI and Department of Energy reports substantiating the Wuhan lab leak theory as “likely,” and the Biden policies on energy and mining that ultimately appear favorable to communist China, the American people are wondering: What does the CCP have on the Bidens?

It appears that they are soon about to find out.”

  15. EXCERPT: “Briefing by Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of Nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection troops of the Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation. Jan. 30. Main points:

    – The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has repeatedly noted the signs of the implementation of ‘dual-purpose programmes’ by the USA and its allies outside their national territories, including within the operation of the biolaboratories funded by the Pentagon or its contractors.

    – We have previously informed about the works on enhancing the pathogenic characteristics of COVID-19 causative agent, carried out at Boston University with funds of the U.S. state budget, as well as the possible involvement of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the emergence of the new coronavirus.

    – The high degree of readiness of the U.S. mRNA vaccine manufacturers for a pandemic of the new coronavirus infection raises questions. One gets the impression that pharmaceutical companies had produced the vaccine preparations in advance, being unable to rapidly introduce them into the market due to specific characteristics of the virus that embodied in low efficiency of vaccination and numerous side effects.

    – It is to be reminded that on 18 October 2019, two months before the first official reports about the emergence of the new coronavirus infection in China, the John Hopkins University, supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, conducted Event 201 exercise in New York.

    – Outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic precisely according to this scenario raises questions about its premeditated nature, involvement of the USA in this incident, as well as real objectives of the U.S. biological programmes aimed at enhancing the characteristics of dangerous pathogens.

    – We have repeatedly noted that the United States conduct the studies that are most controversial in terms of the international law outside the national territory.

    – The premises of Pharmbiotest Medical Centre in Rubezhnoye were explored during the special military operation in the liberated territory of the Lugansk People’s Republic. It was a venue for clinical trials to test the medicinal products that caused serious side effects: they include medications for treating leukaemia, mental disorders, neurological diseases, epilepsy, and other dangerous illnesses.

    – In early 2023, residents of Lisichansk found a large landfill of biomaterial residues that belong to Pharmbiotest. The clinical samples and patients’ clinical records with their personal data were buried instead of being cremated or eliminated in appropriate manner, prescribed by the rules. This means that the evidence were being eliminated in extreme hurry.

    – During the special military operation, Russian personnel acquired over 20,000 documents, reference and analytical materials, as well as surveyed witnesses and participants of the U.S. biological programmes. The abovementioned materials confirm that the Pentagon aimed at creating elements of a biological weapon, and testing it on the population of Ukraine and other countries along the perimeter of the Russian borders.

    – The Russian Defence Ministry has already mentioned the names of the participants of the military and biological programmes, including those of the U.S. Democratic Party representatives, employees of the U.S. military department, and the Pentagon’s contracting organisations. The DTRA reports have led us to the new information about key persons involved in the so-called Ukrainian projects who have been staying in the shadow until now.”

  18. sweet story! police officer unable to take his daughters to father daughter dance, so his fellow officers take them!
    entire article
NAVARRO COUNTY, Texas – State troopers stepped in to take an injured colleague’s daughter to a Daddy-Daughter dance he couldn’t attend.

DPS trooper Curtis Putz was investigating a crash on I-45 in Navarro County during February’s winter storm when he was hit by another vehicle.

Putz suffered several broken bones, including a broken hip, pelvis, femur, ribs, forearm and shoulder, according to his wife.

He also had a lacerated liver, lacerated arteries and road rash.

While Putz is on the long road to recovery several DPS troopers went the extra mile to share a special moment with his family.

Five DPS troopers showed up to take Putz’s two fifth grade daughters to their final Daddy-Daughter dance.

The troopers brought the girls flowers and escorted them in freshly washed patrol cars.

Putz’s wife Tosha said her husband was proud and thankful for his brothers in blue.

“I know it’s cliché, but they have restored my faith in humanity,” Tosha Putz told FOX 4.

Putz asks everyone to slow down and move over if you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road.

  19. for pete’s sake…$15 minimum wage is now NOT enough…CA wants to raise it to $18/hour!
    FTA
Californians will be able to vote on a new measure in 2024 that would raise the state’s minimum wage to $18, as inflation and cost of living increases have exacerbated the effects of income inequality in the state.

An initiative, called the Living Wage Act of 2022, has been qualified by the secretary of state for next year’s ballot.

Should it pass, the measure would extend the phased increases implemented in 2017, bringing the second highest-in-the-nation statewide minimum wage up to $18 over the next few years.

The last bump under the phased increases to minimum wage was in 2022, with inflation becoming the driver of baseline raises this year. As of Jan. 1, 2023, minimum wage became $15.50 per hour for all employers.
