What Shall We Bake Today?

Since this is March, I thought I’d bring a recipe for classic Irish Soda Bread.  I have not attempted this as of writing this open.  If I do before it posts, I’ll update it to let you know the results.

Ingredients

2 cups flour

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons cold butter, cubed

2 large eggs, room temperature, divided use

3/4 cup buttermilk

1/3 cup raisins

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°. Whisk together first 5 ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In another bowl, whisk together 1 egg and buttermilk. Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. Stir in raisins.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 6-8 times. Shape into a 6-1/2-in. round loaf; place on a greased baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, make a shallow cross in top of loaf. Whisk remaining egg; brush over top.

Bake until golden brown, 30-35 minutes. Remove from pan to a wire rack. Serve warm.

ENJOY!

  1. “The Soros, Zuckerberg, and Koch Money at CPAC: Matt Schlapp has tried to reinvent the conservative conference as a hub of right-wing populism. But the billionaire dollars swirling around it tell a different story.”

EXCERPT: “Records show that the American Conservative Union, which runs the Conservative Political Action Conference, has received significant funding from groups connected to billionaires George Soros and Mark Zuckerberg.

Matt Schlapp, the union’s chairman, has attempted to reinvent the conservative conference as a hub of right-wing populism. But the billionaire dollars swirling around it related to advocacy for criminal justice reform tell a different story.

The Open Society Foundations database shows that the Soros-run grantmaking network has given millions of dollars to the New Venture Fund over the years. According to its tax filings, the Venture Fund awarded a grant of $183,250 to the American Conservative Union in 2020 for “civil rights, social action, advocacy.” Searching “New Venture Fund” in the database returns results for 95 grants from the Open Society Foundations dating back to 2016.

The New Venture Fund’s “sister” organization is the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a dark money fund that aided pro-Biden groups in 2020. Influence Watch reports: ‘In May 2021, the New York Times criticized New Venture’s 501(c)(4) “sister” nonprofit, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, for its close ties to and funding from the foreign-funded Wyss Foundation, calling Sixteen Thirty Fund one of the “leading dark money spenders on the Left” responsible for distributing more than $63 million in super PAC donations that hurt Republicans and aided Democrats in the 2020 election.’

But Soros isn’t the only one whose dollars can be traced to CPAC. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, created and owned by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, has awarded several grants to the American Conservative Union, ranging from $10,000 to $1,250,000. Each grant was in support of criminal justice reform, given to two of the three entities that comprise the union: the American Conservative Union, which engages in lobbying, and the American Conservative Union Foundation, which hosts CPAC.”

  2. the marines are getting rid of their sniper platoons?
    FTA
The United States Marine Corps disbanded its elite and historic scout sniper program as part of its extensive revamp to adapt infantry battalions to future warfare.

The age-old MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) has been around since World War II, and one nonprofit organization representing the renowned Scout Snipers is calling the Corps move “misguided” and “ill-advised.”

“We’re shocked and saddened that our Marine Corps leadership seems to have forgotten the lessons learned in combat, paid for with the blood of our members,” the USMC Scout Sniper Association wrote on Facebook.

A memo from Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policy, and Operations at Headquarters Marine Corps, Lieutenant General David J. Furness, called for the “immediate transition of Scout Sniper Platoons to Scout Platoons” meaning that infantry battalions will no longer have sniper attachments, but instead scouts who will “provide the commander with relevant, reliable, accurate and prompt information.”

  5. I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
