ETYMOLOGY OF WORDS AND PHRASES, PART 12

“Every word carries a secret inside itself; it’s called etymology. It is the DNA of a word.” — Mary Ruefle,”Madness, Rack & Honey”

“Etymology” derives from the Greek wordetumos, meaning “true.” The practice of etymology is uncovering the truth by tracing the root of a word. If you’re interested in language, it can be quite exhilarating. Like being a linguistic detective. There will be few pictures in this one so settle down….this will take you a few minutes!!!

1. Disaster

  • “anything that befalls of ruinous or distressing nature; any unfortunate event,” especially a sudden or great misfortune, 1590s,
  • from French désastre (1560s),
  • from Italian disastro, literally “ill-starred,” from dis-,
  • from Latin astrum,
  • from Greek astron “star”.

The origin of the word points to unfavorable events being blamed on certain planet positions. Destiny is written in the stars – in some conceptions of fate in mythology, the universe is fixed and inevitable.

2. Muscle

A far cry from World’s Strongest Man, the origin of the word ‘muscle’ is perhaps the most surprising.

  • “contractible animal tissue consisting of bundles of fibers,”
  • late 14c., “a muscle of the body,”
  • from Latin musculus “a muscle,” literally “a little mouse.

Rather than relating to strength and brawn as we understand it, ‘muscle’ is derived from the appearance of a muscle under the skin. Particularly biceps, which were thought both in Latin and in Greek to resemble a mouse running beneath the skin.

3. Nice

Perhaps you’ve been told by an English teacher in the past to avoid using the word ‘nice’. This is because the word is so commonly used in our language that it’s not highly descriptive or imaginative. Many English teachers consider it a cop-out. Yet its origins are far more interesting than the word appears.

  • late 13c., “foolish, ignorant, frivolous, senseless,”
  • from Old French nice (12c.) “careless, clumsy; weak; poor, needy; simple, stupid, silly, foolish,”
  • from Latin nescius “ignorant, unaware,” literally “not-knowing,”

4. Cloud

  • Old English clud “mass of rock, hill,” related to clod.
  • The modern sense “rain-cloud, mass of evaporated water visible and suspended in the sky” is a metaphoric extension that begins to appear c. 1300 in southern texts, based on the similarity of cumulus clouds and rock masses.
  • The usual Old English word for “cloud” was weolcan (see welkin).
  • In Middle English, skie also originally meant “cloud.”
  • The last entry for cloud in the original rock mass sense in Middle English Compendium is from c. 1475.

The origins of the word ‘cloud’ are surprising. You wouldn’t automatically associate their wispy appearance with the solidity of rocks. The etymology explains that it refers to the mass it accumulates and thus appearing similar to earth formations.

5. Oxymoron

This is a great example of the word being an example of itself.

  • in rhetoric, “a figure conjoining words or terms apparently contradictory so as to give point to the statement or expression,”
  • 1650s, from Greek oxymōron, noun use of neuter of oxymōros (adj.) “pointedly foolish,”
  • from oxys “sharp, pointed” (from PIE root *ak- “be sharp, rise (out) to a point, pierce”) + mōros “stupid” (see moron).

Now, it’s used more broadly to denote a contradiction in terms. Originally, though, it was a clash of terms around sharpness and dullness.

6. Quarantine

The origins of ‘quarantine’ may interest you.

  • 1660s, “period a ship suspected of carrying disease is kept in isolation,”
  • from Italian quaranta giorni, literally “space of forty days,”
  • from quaranta “forty,” from Latin quadraginta “forty,” which is related to quattuor “four” (from PIE root *kwetwer- “four”). So called from the Venetian policy (first enforced in 1377) of keeping ships from plague-stricken countries waiting off its port for 40 days to assure that no latent cases were aboard. Also see lazaretto.
  • The extended sense of “any period of forced isolation” is from the 1670s.
  • Earlier in English the word meant “period of 40 days in which a widow has the right to remain in her dead husband’s house” (1520s), and, as quarentyne (15c.), “desert in which Christ fasted for 40 days,” from Latin quadraginta “forty.”

We understand ‘quarantine’ as a period of isolation to prevent the spread of an illness, but the background on this is very interesting. The root of the word is more specific to the period of time elapsed.

7. Tragedy

Without the word ‘tragedy’, we wouldn’t have one of the greatest songs by the Bee Gees. But there is also an interesting word history to be grateful for.

  • late 14c., “play or other serious literary work with an unhappy ending,”
  • from Old French tragedie (14c.), from Latin tragedia “a tragedy,”
  • from Greek tragodia “a dramatic poem or play in formal language and having an unhappy resolution,”
  • apparently literally “goat song,” from tragos “goat, buck” + ōidē “song” (see ode), probably on model of rhapsodos (see rhapsody).

Although the specificity of the goat connection is debated, the connection to goats, in general, is accepted. There are a few different possibilities as to why. The etymology includes the literal translation “goat song”. Tragedy as we know it has its roots in ancient Greece, where it’s thought people dressed as goats and satyrs in plays. There are other theories surrounding goat sacrifices. Either way, who knew goats were involved at all?

8. Surprise

What would a list of surprising etymology be without the word ‘surprise’ itself?

  • also formerly surprize, late 14c.,
  • “unexpected attack or capture,” from Old French surprise “a taking unawares” (13c.),
  • from noun use of past participle of Old French sorprendre “to overtake, seize, invade” (12c.),
  • Meaning “something unexpected” first recorded 1590s, that of “feeling of astonishment caused by something unexpected” is c. 1600.
  • Meaning “fancy dish” is attested from 1708.

When you think of the word ‘surprise’ today, you might think of smiling faces. In history, though, it had a much more violent origin. The word is rooted in an invasion in having the element of surprise as an advantage. It is also interesting that it has root words meaning “grasp”. This can also be related to words like “comprehend”.

9. Comrade

It is interesting how the word ‘comrade’ is considered a non-neutral term. Whether it’s a veteran recalling time spent with his old army comrades, or used among the political left. Its origins point to it being more widely applicable.

  • 1590s, “one who shares the same room,” hence “a close companion,”
  • from French camarade (16c.),
  • from Spanish camarada “chamber mate,” or Italian camerata “a partner,”
  • from Latin camera “vaulted room, chamber” (see camera).
  • In Spanish, a collective noun referring to one’s company.
  • In 17c., sometimes jocularly misspelled comrogue.
  • Used from 1884 by socialists and communists as a prefix to a surname to avoid “Mister” and other such titles.
  • Also related: Comradely; comradeship.

With this considered, you could call any of your cohabitants “comrade”. And it’s perfectly acceptable to use it for your partner, no matter what your politics are.

10. Clue

To end where we started, with the spirit of investigation, let’s have a look at the word ‘clue’.

  • “anything that guides or directs in an intricate case,” 1590s, a special use of a revised spelling of clew “a ball of thread or yarn” (q.v.).
  • The word, which is native Germanic, in Middle English was clewe, also cleue; some words were borrowed from Old French and Middle but these later were reformed, and this process was extended to native words (hue, true, clue) which had ended in a vowel and -w.
  • The spelling clue is first attested mid-15c.
  • The sense shift is originally in reference to the clew of thread given by Ariadne to Theseus to use as a guide out of the Labyrinth in Greek mythology. The purely figurative sense of “that which points the way,” without regard to labyrinths, is from 1620s.
  • As something which a bewildered person does not have, by 1948.

The word origins rooted in old stories like this are the most fascinating. A clue could be any object now. But, once upon a time, it was explicitly a ball of yarn a character used to find his way.

  1. Thank you for another interesting history of words, Miss Filly!

It’s a good way to learn something new and rest our brains from politics.

      One snippet:

Maricopa County Recorders Office has at least five appointments made by Adrian Fontes, our county recorder from 2017 to 2021, who are phantoms, non-existent individuals. These phantom individuals hold positions related to election services. Further, during the same period, the office has at least 15 individuals whose appointments were falsified, and thereafter, kept hidden from the public during the 2020 election cycle. The appointment documents for all of the above individuals have forged signatures, falsified clerical signatures, which means that the tracings from are from a signature stamp, and fake dates.

Students raise $270K so 80-year-old custodian could retire
    https://nypost.com/2023/02/24/students-raise-270k-so-80-year-old-custodian-could-retire/

    They paid it backward.

Three high school seniors from rural Texas raised more than a quarter of a million dollars so their 80-year-old school custodian could retire again.

Callisburg High School students Greyson Thurman, Marti Yousko and Banner Tidwell launched a GoFundMe campaign for the janitor, “Mr. James,” on Feb. 15.

Thurman posted a TikTok showing the elderly man cleaning the hallway with a link to the fundraiser, and within less than two weeks, the viral post raised more than $270,000 from over 8,600 donors.

“This is our 80 y/o janitor who had his rent raised and had to come back to work. Let’s help Mr. James out,” text over the video read. “No one his age should have to be cleaning our messes up to continue to live.”

Roughly 1.5 million people were forced out of retirement across the country due to rising inflation costs, according to an Indeed analysis of US Department of Labor data, CBS reported.

Mr. James, who wishes to avoid the spotlight, was “very grateful,” for the massive response.

  6. Sent by Burnel: “You know there are so many TV channels, each starved of new programs. In a rural program for farmers, a female TV reporter seeking the main cause of Mad Cow disease, arranged for an interview with a farmer who may have some theories on the matter. The interview went as follows:

The lady reporter: “I am here to collect information on the possible sources of Mad Cow Disease. Can you offer any reason for this disease?”

The farmer stared at the reporter and said…”Do you know that a bull mounts a cow only once a year?”

Reporter: (obviously embarrassed): “Well, sir, that’s a new piece of information but what’s the relation between this phenomenon and Mad Cow disease?”

Farmer: “And, madam, do you know that we milk a cow twice a day?”

Reporter: “Sir, this is really valuable information, but what about getting to the point?”

Farmer: “I am getting to the point, madam. Just imagine, if I was playing with your tits twice a day and only screwing you once a year, wouldn’t you get mad?”

EXCERPT: “There is a micro-group of people on Substack who consider themselves the ‘tip of the spear’ of resistance. Their vanity is excruciating to observe but, thankfully, there are very few of them and they have been overlooked by many readers so far.

Recently some members of this micro-group have taken to gang-stalking my comments and they have inspired me to write this post. So thanks to them I have devised a little competition!
(see the end of this post to take part!)

Central to their argument is their objection to the nasty name: COVID 19. They declare repeatedly that the World Health Organisation (WHO) named a disease which does not exist and I agree, absolutely. Covid 19 was a name given to an unproven viral illness caused by an unproven ‘virus’ which was originally named coronavirus but was later renamed, again by the WHO, Covid 19.

Hard work by a multitude of health activists has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there is no identifiable entity which could be called a ‘virus’, under the recently updated dictionary definition of the word. Here is that new definition for clarity:”

After he won his election, Alabama’s new Secretary of State, Wes Allen, withdrew the state from the ERIC voter registration system.

The Gateway Pundit commends Mr. Allen for keeping his campaign promise to protect elections and secure the personal information of Alabama residents.

Allen said, “Since I was in town, I went to see the ERIC Headquarters. What I found was that there was no ERIC headquarters at that address. There were no employees. There were no servers. There was no ERIC presence of any kind. Instead. I found a virtual office that is rentable by the day. What it was missing was people, servers and any sign of the ERIC team.”

“Before I took office, Alabama transmitted the personal information of millions of our citizens to this private organization for the past several years. That information is stored on a server somewhere but we do not know where. There is no ERIC operation at the location they claim is their office. A lot of personal data and taxpayer money has been transferred to ERIC. Where is that data? Where are the employees? Where are the offices? Where are the computers?”

  12. “WHO press release on negotiations for the IHR amendments and the Pandemic Accord or Instrument” — “Hot off the press!”

    Meryl Nass

    “25 February 2023 — PRESS RELEASE

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Governments hold first detailed discussions on proposed amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005)

25 February 2023, Geneva: Governments agreed on a way forward for updating the WHO International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR), holding the first round of intensive discussions on more than 300 amendments proposed by countries to this globally agreed instrument. The IHR set out agreed approaches and obligations for countries to prepare for, and respond to, disease outbreaks and other acute public health risks. The proposed amendments come in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Second meeting of the Working Group on Amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005) took place from 20-24 February, during which the proposed amendments were discussed for the first time. The Group heard the intent behind the 307 amendments proposed by governments and shared views on each. They also agreed on next steps to tackle more in-depth negotiations on the proposed amendments, and plans for its next meeting running from 17-20 April.

Co-Chair of the IHR Working Group, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, said in discussing amendments to the Regulations, governments focused on making their countries, and the international community, better prepared for future emergencies.

“COVID-19 showed us that having a good, strong set of International Health Regulations is essential, and showed where the current Regulations need to be improved,” said Dr Bloomfield, former Director-General of Health, New Zealand. “The ongoing pandemic has underscored the importance of countries working together collaboratively, and supporting WHO in its vital work, to make the world safer. The tone of the discussions and progress made during this week’s meeting clearly show that countries understand the responsibility they have to ensure this process is successful.”

Throughout the weeklong meeting, the 194 Member States of WHO, who are also States Parties to the IHR, stressed the importance of enhancing capacity building, especially in low-income countries; access to benefits arising from sharing pathogens; equitable access to medical countermeasures; and enhanced cooperation and information sharing.

Fellow IHR Working Group Co-Chair, Dr Abdullah M. Assiri, deputy minister of health, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said governments were committed to leading the process to strengthening the IHR to, in turn, make the world safer and healthier.

“Countries are in the driving seat of this process as they need to implement the International Health Regulations, deliver on the obligations, and make the key decisions needed to respond to public health threats,” said Dr Assiri. “During the pandemic, the world faced the urgent need for functioning international instruments, and placed increasing importance in international organizations, such as WHO. Updated Regulations will enable the world to better detect outbreaks early, and prevent them from developing into public health emergencies of international concern. This is about strengthening our collective ability to do that and to better protect everybody.”

In the leadup to the meeting, an independent and diverse team of experts prepared a technical assessment of the proposed amendments to assist countries in their negotiations.

In parallel with the IHR amendments process, governments are also negotiating the drafting of an WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, also referred to as a pandemic accord. Governments will meet from 27 February-3 March 2023 to consider the zero draft of the accord.

Dr Bloomfield said the two processes are complementary, as they are both guided by the imperative of making the world safer from communicable diseases and ensuring equitable responses to public health threats. “The efforts to update the International Health Regulations and draft a pandemic accord share a number of common themes, including the importance of equity in access to health, collaboration and capacity building,” he said. “It is important that there is consistency and alignment across the two processes.”

WHO Member States issued the International Sanitary Regulations in 1951, the precursor to the IHR, which came into being in 2005. The IHR are an instrument of international law that is legally-binding on 196 States Parties, including the 194 WHO Member States. The IHR create rights and obligations for countries, including the requirement to report to WHO public health events with risk of international spread. They also outline the criteria to determine if a particular event constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, WHO’s highest level of alarm under the IHR, which in turn triggers specific response actions for countries to prevent the further spread of the epidemics and reduce their impact on population health and societies at large.

  13. “Lawfare for Freedom – Why Do We Keep Talking About Waking People Up?”
    Tom Renz

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “This article is completely inspired by interactions I’ve been having on Twitter and Truth Social over the past few weeks. One of the questions I keep getting from people is why do you keep talking about waking people up? This is a fair question and critical for people to understand.

For the past three years I have waged what I would affectionately refer to as lawfare. I’ve defined lawfare as a combination of legal work, public outreach/education (PR), and political pressure. The strategy is very circular with each side of the legal/political/PR triangle being of equal importance. The fight in the courts is always done per the ethical rules and guidelines and used to promote truth and ensure the actual law is followed; the political fight is how we facilitate change as was the design of our founding fathers; and the PR aspect of the fight is the mechanism by which we create political pressure that provides credibility in the courts (if no one hears the truth it can seem like a crazy thing) and forces the many otherwise corrupt politicians to do something.

As an attorney I have been very active in the courts and will continue to do so. That was phase 1 of lawfare and is ongoing, but we are now really pushing phase 2 which is the PR or awakening aspect of the fight. This is where we educate the public to the truth that is being denied. Our nation was founded on and based on being governed by “we the people” and so this part of the fight is critical.

One of the questions I see frequently is “if what these guys are doing is already illegal why don’t they just arrest them… who cares about waking people up?” The answer to this is critical. In short, the prosecutors (and even some judges) are elected or politically appointed. While I would argue that it is unethical and probably illegal, most of these people will look the other way on politically difficult questions. This means that the odds of corrupt politicians getting arrested is low.

The follow-up question is “why don’t we just fire these corrupt prosecutors/judges/etc?” Well, unless we the people step in politically who will do that? The corrupt politicians are simply not going to fire the corrupt prosecutors that are looking the other way and protecting the corrupt system. The system is a self-sustaining and self-perpetuating system of corruption that is designed to protect itself. Our government was built with three separate branches of government so that if one became corrupted the others could step in but we are now at the point that there is corruption in all three and so the protections built to stop corruption now preserve it.

The only path forward is to strike back at the corruption in all three branches. If we only strike one, the other two will retaliate to preserve the corruption in the same way they were originally designed to stop it. We also have to take steps to ensure those fighting the corruption cannot be easily neutralized.

The only thing the corrupt tyrants fear is we the people. Ultimately, if 300 million Americans demand change the crooks in DC cannot fight that. This same truth would apply if even 100 million Americans truly DEMANDED change. Unfortunately, at this point, I doubt we even have 5 million that are fully awake; remember, supporting Trump does NOT mean you are awake – rather it just means that understand he’s better than the alternative.

To ensure we can actually fight back we need to shine the light of truth on the corruption in our nation. When we look at the sanctions and attacks on attorneys fighting against election fraud, we can see why this is so important. Every time an attorney files an election case a group of crooked leftist Democrat operative attorneys pushes for sanctions. These are frequently being granted under questionable circumstances by judges that find it far more politically palatable to dismiss these cases than to look at the terrifying reality of what is happening. If the truth about election fraud became mainstream the corrupt lawyers and questionable judges would have a much harder time explaining why they are ignoring the law and facts of these cases.

If you doubt me look at what we have done in the realm of COVID litigation and law. When I started filing suits, regardless of how well-cited they were and how solid the legal basis for the case was they were viewed as not credible because the courts simply followed the corrupt “experts” from the government. Over time, we have continued to educate the public and people have pushed and demanded that the truth be told. This lead to small victories in court and small political victories. Those small victories are becoming larger and larger and, if we stay the course, they will eventually ensure the real truth about this corruption comes out. When that happens, the global public will demand accountability and even the corrupt politicians will have no choice but to take steps.

My point is that the corruption is multifaceted and requires a multifaceted approach to counter. Key to that counter is support from the people. Fighting corruption is difficult, dangerous, and expensive. It requires immense effort, time, and resources. It also requires the courage to fight against massive PR campaigns where well-funded anti-freedom groups attack the warriors that would destroy their corrupt enterprises legally, politically, and with public lies.

The bad guys don’t like us because we know what they do and we are turning their tactics on them. This will not be a quick victory but we either fight or lose our freedom. There is no other option.”

  14. good–they are suing to get a say in whether or not the clean up is complete and effective
    FTA
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Norfolk Southern Railway Co. on behalf of all residents within 30 miles of the site in East Palestine, Ohio, where a train derailment occurred earlier this month, prompting a “controlled burn” of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals.

Johnson and Johnson has joined with class-action law firm Hagens Berman to claim that the legal doctrine of “public nuisance” applies in the case of the train’s derailment on February 3. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has already ordered the railroad to pay for cleanup, which some estimates say could cost up $1 billion. But residents in the area are afraid the toxins, including thousands of gallons of vinyl chloride, have polluted the air and water around them.

“All of our lawsuit’s proposed benefits would be above and beyond what the EPA would have for residents,” Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman told The Hill. “Additionally, we will want a say in what an effective cleanup is.”

  15. Plane Explodes Into Fireball After Man In 23F Fails To Put Phone In Airplane Mode
    LIFE · Feb 24, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

“ATLANTA, GA — A United Airlines plane tragically exploded into a massive fireball during takeoff after the man sitting in seat 23F failed to switch his phone to airplane mode, FAA authorities confirmed Friday.

“One selfish person didn’t put their phone on airplane mode, and now everybody’s dead,” said FAA director Billy Nolen. “Let this be a reminder that every single plane is just one errant cell phone signal away from detonating into a fiery, all-consuming blaze of steel and death.”

    “It’s science.”

Investigators report that the cell phone responsible came from seat 23F, occupied by Mr. Max Buford from Blue Ridge, Georgia. “The black box recording confirms that repeated instructions to place all electronic devices in airplane mode went unheeded by Mr. Buford,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “His failure to press that little button predictably resulted in a mass casualty event, as it always does. It’s a tale as old as time.”

At publishing time, experts had confirmed that up to 3,500 planes a day explode for this reason.”

  17. “US court demands release of report on toxicity of fluoride”

    BY RHODA WILSON ON FEBRUARY 25, 2023 • ( 5 COMMENTS )

EXCERPT: “After numerous delays, and interventions by Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine, the US National Toxicology Program’s review of Fluoride’s toxicity will soon be released to the public. The move is the latest development in the nearly decade-long legal battle between the Fluoride Action Network, Food and Water Watch, Organic Consumers Association, and the US Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”).

Attorneys with the Fluoride Action Network and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (“NIEHS”), parent agency for the National Toxicology Program (“NTP”), have agreed to the release of the long-delayed NTP review on fluoride’s toxicity. The release of the documents will play a major role in the next phase of the ongoing lawsuit against the EPA.

The decision to release the documents was made at a 3 February meeting between counsel for the Fluoride Action Network and the NIEHS following a subpoena requesting comments from the agency, the NTP’s responses, and additional documents relevant to the decision not published in the NTP’s completed fluoride monograph in May 2022.”

  18. “Minnesota joins growing movement to ban new homes from having any gas at all. The language in the proposed Minnesota bill mirrors legislation passed in May 2022 in New York, which enabled regulators to make updates to the state energy code to promote “clean energy.”

By John Hugh DeMastri -February 25, 2023

EXCERPT: “(Daily Caller News Foundation) — A growing number of states and cities are considering or implementing bans for the future construction of not just gas stoves, but natural gas hookups themselves, a move that would raise costs for consumers and potentially have negative environmental consequences, natural gas advocates told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Lawmakers in the state of Minnesota introduced legislation this month that would permit the state’s Commissioner of Labor and Industry to amend the state’s energy code to “mitigate the impact of climate change,” a directive that could be used to justify a ban on natural gas, according to the free-market Minnesota think-tank Center of the American Experiment. California and New York are weighing statewide bans which would not only increase costs but may not have the climate benefits advocates hope for, Dan Kish, senior fellow at the Institute for Energy Research told the DCNF.

“Natural gas is our cleanest fossil [fuel] and it is responsible for the U.S. reducing carbon dioxide emissions more than other countries, largely because we have centuries of the stuff,” Kish told the DCNF. “God blessed North America with enormous energy wealth, and our only impediment is power-hungry politicians who want to make energy more expensive and more foreign, while bossing Americans around by telling them how to heat their homes and what kind of car they can drive.”

Shock Report: Sen. Fetterman Was Hospitalized Because He Was Unable to Take Care of Himself
What the spokesman did not disclose was that Fetterman was diagnosed with depression and was advised to see the Capitol physician, which he did the following Monday. The doctor recommended Fetterman check himself into the hospital for clinical depression.
It turns out Fetterman’s lightheadedness was the result of him not being able to take care of himself: He was not eating or drinking enough fluids to sustain himself.

Fetterman is on his own in D.C. His family did not move to Washington with him, opting to remain in their hometown Braddock. This meant that Fetterman, still recuperating from a debilitating stroke while starting a new high pressure job, had no one to look after him.

His staff obviously wasn’t. They knew he was suffering from depression and that between the stroke and depression he was difficult to deal with.

Fetterman’s wife Gisele tweeted Friday that when her husband went in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland on February 15 for depression, she grabbed the kids and their passports and got out of the country.

Good grief, that is what you hire a house keeper for! Some one who knows his favorite foods and can tempt his appetite. Heck dump some MJ in the brownies and he will calm down and get the munchies.
