Unusual Plants: Monkey Orchids

In doing research for another open, I came across of whole slew of unusual plants and flowers and I thought I’d present one of them every month.  Today’s entry is Monkey Orchids.  (There are quite a few orchids on the list—they are very unusual as a group—but not all are.)

There are many orchids that bear flowers looking like animals and birds. But the one that is really amazing is the one that looks like the face of a monkey. This orchid called Monkey orchid is aptly named because of its striking resemblance to the simian primates. It is really surprising but Mother Nature has literally dittoed the details with two dark eyes, eyebrows that are fuzzy and dotted, a nose that is furry, and even the beard that one sees on the face of the simians. This is a very rare orchid so chances are that you might not see it in person. It grows at a high altitude of 3000 feet and more in the Cloud Mountains of Peru and southeastern Ecuador.

However, for those interested in having this prized addition to their home garden is that this rare orchid can be grown in cold to warm weather and it blooms year round. The most interesting fact about the Monkey faced orchid is that it smells like ripe oranges to easily make it the center of attraction of any garden where it is grown. However, it is a little ironic that its flower smells like ripe oranges as with a face like a monkey, you would expect the flower to smell like bananas, right?

The Dracula part of the name of this orchid comes from two long spikes from the sepals that look like fangs of Dracula as described in movies and fiction. One fact that many people are not aware of is that the scientific name Orchis Simia derives from the fact that this orchid plant grows from two oval shaped tubers that look like the testicles of a primate. The Greek word Orchis means testicles.

Monkey orchid is a perennial orchid and it has a very long life of many years. However, a plant starts to flower after 7 years of its germination requiring the owners to be patient to see the monkey faced flowers. But once it starts to flower, you can expect the plant to flower every year for nearly 19 years.

Leaves of Monkey Orchid are green in color and linear in shape. These leaves are rhizome and fleshy. A lot has already been said about the monkey faced flowers of this orchid. Interesting fact is that the flower of monkey orchid can be in different colors like red, purple, pink, blue, orange, white, green, and even brown. The three petals of the flower can have dots, stripes or bear no particular pattern yet look like the face of the monkey.

The best conditions for growing monkey orchid in your garden are temperatures of 42-46℉ at night and not more than a temperature of 68℉ during day time. This orchid requires a high humidity level of more than 65%. The soil should be made up of bark and sphagnum moss. Choose a pot that is large and has many holes in it. You can grow this orchid by planting the seed or through vegetative reproduction. The best thing with this species of orchid is that it can be grown any time of the year as it is perennial in nature. The size of the monkey orchid remains between 7 and 20 inches. It requires a heavy amount of water and shady conditions.

    Perhaps more than any president in US history, Joe Biden understands addiction’s awesome and awful power. Nobody should be more sensitive to the issue of addiction than he. For years, he and others in the Biden family struggled to get Hunter into treatment and recovery. The President knows, better than most Americans do, that many hard-core drug addicts require an intervention, not enabling.

    And yet President Biden’s Justice Department is actively considering legalizing government-funded drug dens, which would enable addiction, not recovery. In early December, the DOJ told a Philadelphia judge that it would decide within two months whether to grant the city a waiver from federal law so it could operate a government-funded drug site.

    Supporters of government-funded drug dens say they will save lives lost to overdose. The drug addiction crisis is the worst public health crisis in the United States. Illicit drug deaths rose from 17,000 in 2000 to 107,000 in 2021. Government drug sites are modeled on what they do in the Netherlands and Harlem, which are currently operating sites. The operator of the Harlem site testified to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that the New York site had saved lives without any impact on the community.

    But the Netherlands pressures destructive and self-destructive addicts to get into rehab and recovery communities, which the U.S. does not have and Biden is not proposing to build. The Harlem site has attracted, not reduced, open-air drug use and drug dealing, residents say. And overdose deaths rose precipitously in Vancouver, B.C., alongside supervised drug consumption sites.

    Past Democratic politicians recognized that many addicts won’t seek treatment unless required. “The problem of homelessness is not going to be solved,” wrote former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown in his memoir, “until one major drastic change takes place in public policy: we have to be able to impose help and treatment on people.”

    Biden himself had historically been opposed to open drug use. In 1986 he cosponsored the “crackhouse statute,” which made it illegal to “knowingly open, lease, rent, use or maintain any place, whether permanently or temporarily, for the purpose of manufacturing, distributing or using any controlled substance.”

    Keith Humphreys, the lead author of last year’s Lancet-Stanford Commission on the Opioid Crisis, argues that intervention, if not by family then by the police, is often necessary for getting addicts into treatment. “A lot of people are addicted,” he said, describing homeless addicts in San Francisco, “and don’t want to change until it hurts.” And many parents of addicted homeless children want the courts to mandate drug treatment and rehabilitation, as they used to, before the passage of Proposition 47, which decriminalized possession of three grams of hard drugs, in 2014.

    “I think Corey might need mandatory intervention,” said Jacqui Berlinn, co-founder of Mothers Against Drug Addictions and Deaths, about her son, who is a homeless fentanyl addict. “I get a lot of pushback. It’s the old adage of, ‘You can’t force them,’ and to some extent, I believe that. But honestly, everybody’s different, and my son’s rock bottom is death.”

    There is little doubt that if President Biden were to meet with Berlinn, Humphreys, or any of the recovering addicts who co-founded the new North America Recovers coalition, he would agree that many addicts need an intervention. Why, then, might Biden sign off on “modern day opium dens” that enable addiction?

    The Office of National Statistics said it had registered 17,381 deaths in England and Wales in the week ended Friday, January 13. That figure is about 20 percent more than the five-year average – and 30 percent more than longer-term averages – for the year’s second week. Only about 650 of the deaths had Covid as an underlying cause, the government said, so most of the excess was not related to Covid.

    The British data confirms recent trends all over Western Europe, including the Netherlands and Switzerland. Most wealthy countries that relied on mRNA Covid shots and boosters had non-Covid deaths well above normal in 2022. The problem has worsened in recent weeks, in the wake of the fall Omicron booster campaigns.     Bulgaria offers a striking contrast.

    Deaths in Bulgaria have fallen far below their 2020 and 2021 levels – and more recently even below the 2015-2019 averages.

    Bulgaria had among the lowest vaccination rates anywhere in the world, with only about 30 percent of adults jabbed and under 15 percent receiving even one booster. The country had widespread Covid outbreaks and high Covid deaths in 2020 and 2021.

    But – as was widely predicted when Covid began and before the mRNA vaccines were introduced – it now appears to be running a deficit of deaths. The most likely explanation is that many of the people Covid killed were very old and sick and would have died within a year or two. The Bulgarian data, and similar figures from South Africa, also appear to end “long Covid” as an explanation for the excess deaths in the mRNA countries. Both countries had nearly everyone exposed to the coronavirus.”

    A woman told the paper that increasingly more people in the border town of Csap think that almost no one is safe who can be taken to war, with even 16-year-olds being conscripted.

    Under the recently adopted regulation, no one can be admitted to university without a document proving that they are registered with the army. Workplaces and municipalities must also keep a register, and all conscripts must be registered. A new bill will also make marriage and divorce subject to the authorization of the military headquarters, as there have been cases of people divorcing because fathers raising their children alone are exempt from military service.”

    Brain implants are not new in and of themselves, as are used in medicine to treat some serious conditions. However, the kind brought up here at one point are the ones to be put into healthy people – basically to read their minds.

    “Decoding complex thought,” is already possible, Farahany said during her “Ready for Brain Transparency?” talk at the WEF summit last week. And the tech now is also able to reveal the degree of stress somebody is experiencing, as well as what they are paying attention to. So, the goal is to know what/how a person is feeling, what they are thinking, and what draws their interest.

    According to the professor, all the ingredients are here – all that’s needed is massive uptake, and eventually a shift from today’s devices that accomplish it – wearables – towards “implanted (brain) technology.” Naturally, it’s all to make things more “convenient.” How about “swiping with your mind” instead of using your fingers – because that’s one of the “conveniences” mentioned at the WEF event as a tradeoff for granting full access to your person to outside actors.

    The nightmarish scenario – of healthy people subjecting themselves to this – is something many of us will see within our lifetimes, the professor also predicted from the WEF stage. But why would anyone do it?

    The presentation was preceded by an animated video, the goal of which was, ostensibly, to provide that answer in an easy-to-digest format. The video is introduced as a glimpse into what a presenter literally referred to as “a wonderful future” where brainwaves will be used for wonderful things: fighting crime, being more productive, and even “finding love.”

The laws, passed separately by both states, have been challenged by social media companies who want to be able to censor posts based on political viewpoint.

    “The Solicitor General is invited to file briefs in these cases expressing the views of the United States,” the Supreme Court wrote in an order on Jan. 23.

    Texas’ HB 20 prohibits online platforms from censoring content based on viewpoint. It also requires platforms to be more transparent about their content moderation policies and decisions, and requires them to notify users when their content has been censored and provide them with an avenue to appeal censorship decisions. Texas’s law was challenged by industry group NetChoice, which often represents Big Tech, and blocked by a district court before being upheld by the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit last October.

    Like the Texas law, Florida’s law requires platforms to be transparent about their content moderation policies and decisions. It also bans platforms from deplatforming any “journalistic enterprise” and political candidates. NetChoice successfully challenged the law in a district court, which issued a preliminary injunction, a decision that was upheld by the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The state went to the Supreme Court hoping the injunction would be lifted.

    NetChoice is happy that the Supreme Court is involving the Solicitor General in the cases.

    “We are excited that the Supreme Court is seriously considering taking up our cases and is asking the Solicitor General for its take on the cases,” NetChoice said in a statement Monday. “We expect the Solicitor General will recognize the First Amendment rights of websites and to call on the Supreme Court to take up the cases and find for NetChoice and CCIA.”

    If the SCOTUS ends up granting review, it will more likely hear arguments at the end of this year and will likely not make a decision until 2024.”

    Christina currently serves as attorney for President Donald J. Trump, working closely with him to further the America First agenda. Most notably, she was his legal representative onsite during the unprecedented raid by the FBI on Mar-a-Lago. She began her legal career in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a defense counsel representing marines and sailors in court-martial and administrative separation hearings. She has also served in multiple overseas tours including Afghanistan. She eventually moved to Washington, DC, where she held executive level positions within the Department of Homeland Security.

    Despite Congress’s failure to act, Pennsylvania could well go down as the worst case of election theft in our country’s history. When election officials halted the count on election night, President Trump was ahead by 700,000 votes. But three days later, they declared that Joe Biden had won. President Trump was winning by the greatest margin on election night, that I believe Democrats were convinced they couldn’t catch him. So, Democrats stopped the counting, blocked Republicans from even entering the building, and then somehow counted an alleged 1.4 additional million ballots without oversight. That gave the race to Biden . . . three days later on November 7.

    Pennsylvania voters wanted an explanation for how Joe Biden made up a 700,000-vote deficit with no oversight, and then won the state by 80,555 votes.

    So, where did the votes come from? Traditional Democrat areas like Philadelphia didn’t have enough of a margin to make up nearly three quarters of a million votes. Philadelphia only had about 700,000 votes cast total, so they needed to make up the difference in other counties.

    Since the election, an independent analysis and canvass of the voter roll by Audit the Vote PA has revealed several concerns in multiple counties. They canvassed multiple counties, both Democrat and Republican areas, and made some disturbing findings. In Allegheny County, a Democrat stronghold and home to Pittsburgh, Audit the Vote PA knocked on five hundred doors and collected 185 responses. They made the following findings:”

EXCERPT: “Greg Jacob, the custodian of Pence’s White House records, has revealed that former Vice President Mike Pence had a small number of classified documents at his home in Indiana, and after Pence notified the National Archives, FBI agents were sent to retrieve them on January 19. Pence had previously said that he had not brought classified documents home with him after leaving the vice presidency.

    “The transfer was facilitated by the Vice President’s personal attorney, who has experience in handling classified documents,” wrote Jacob in a letter to the National Archives on January 22.

    Pence notified the National Archives that he had found the documents at his residence on January 16. According to Jacob, Pence had been unaware of the documents being at his house until then. But after he heard of the discovery of classified documents at President Joe Biden’s personal residence, Pence sought the assistance of personal counsel to make sure no such documents existed at his home, as well. It was not revealed what the subject matter of the classified documents in Pence’s possession was.

    It is also not clear what was in the classified documents found at former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, but press reports have indicated that documents in possession of President Biden from his days as vice president include documents having to do with Ukraine. Biden famously was taped bragging to the Council on Foreign Relations that he had gotten a prosecutor in Ukraine fired — a prosecutor, it should be noted, who was investigating a company in Ukraine connected to his son, Hunter. Hunter Biden was reportedly making about $50,000 per month while sitting on the board of Ukrainian energy concern Burisma Holdings.

    On the other hand, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, Representative James Comer (R-Ky.), showed no immediate indication that he would back off his investigations in the aftermath of the Pence revelations.

    “Former Vice President Mike Pence reached out today about classified documents found at his home in Indiana,” Comer said. “He has agreed to fully cooperate with congressional oversight and any questions we have about the matter. Former Vice President Pence’s transparency stands in stark contrast to Biden White House staff who continue to withhold information from Congress and the American people.”

    Representative Mike Turner (R-Ohio), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said he planned to “ask for the same intelligence review and damage assessment” that he had requested regarding Biden, “to see if there are any national security concerns.”

  36. EXCERPT: “At least seven million Americans have had their hearts damaged either by Covid or Covid shots. It is also “within the realm of possibility” that as many as 100 million Americans have developed some degree of heart damage, according to cardiologist and attorney Dr. Thomas Levy. That includes American pilots, who, even with abnormal heart rates, are allowed to continue to execute their duties.

    Discussing his recent article “Myocarditis: Once Rare, Now Common” with Steve Kirsch, founder of the Vaccine Safety Research Foundation (VSRF) last week, Dr. Levy maintained that as of right now, there’s no way to put a precise number on spike protein-induced cardiac issues, but noted that the heart issues, and particularly myocarditis, or inflammation of a heart muscle, are “nothing like pre-Covid.”

    Speaking about the shocking estimates of heart damage, Dr. Levy quoted, among other sources, a pre-print Swiss study that found that 2.8 percent of patients who received a Covid booster had troponin levels that were above the upper limits of normal on the third day after the shot. “By the next day, half of the elevated troponin levels had come back into the normal range. Longer-term follow-up data was not available,” noted the cardiologist while observing that the study fails to answer numerous critical questions about the alarming finding.

    Scientific literature describes troponin as “a group of proteins that are normally only found in the skeletal muscles and heart but can leak into the bloodstream if the heart becomes damaged.” Normally, healthy hearts do not leak troponin into the bloodstream.

    Dr. Levy observed that Covid-related spike protein is a major cause of inflammation in the human body and in the heart in particular. “Myocarditis is occurring quite frequently in patients harboring the chronic presence of the COVID-related spike protein,” he writes, continuing, “This is being seen in many individuals with persistent chronic COVID, many of whom have been vaccinated, as well as in a substantial number of individuals who have been vaccinated and have never contracted COVID.”

The laws, fortified in Parliament last week, have allegedly been used to settle personal scores or persecute minorities.

    The latest development has stoked fears among rights activists about the prospect of a rise in such persecution, especially of religious minorities, including Christians. As Pakistani society has become more conservative and religious in the past several decades, religion and the showcasing of religiosity in public life have become more conspicuous. Those convicted of affronting the Prophet Muhammad’s wives, companions, or close relatives will now undergo 10 years in prison, a sentence that can be prolonged to a life sentence, along with a fine of one million rupees. It also renders the charge of blasphemy an offense for which bail is not permitted.

    “The punishment for disrespecting these sacred personalities was almost nil earlier,” said Abdul Akbar Chitrali, a lawmaker from a religious political party and author of the bill. Deputy Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani lauded the legislation as “historic” as he congratulated the lawmakers for fulfilling what many regarded as their religious duty.

    In response, rights activists said such a move has worried them even more.”
