Unusual Plants: Monkey Orchids

In doing research for another open, I came across of whole slew of unusual plants and flowers and I thought I’d present one of them every month.  Today’s entry is Monkey Orchids.  (There are quite a few orchids on the list—they are very unusual as a group—but not all are.)

There are many orchids that bear flowers looking like animals and birds. But the one that is really amazing is the one that looks like the face of a monkey. This orchid called Monkey orchid is aptly named because of its striking resemblance to the simian primates. It is really surprising but Mother Nature has literally dittoed the details with two dark eyes, eyebrows that are fuzzy and dotted, a nose that is furry, and even the beard that one sees on the face of the simians. This is a very rare orchid so chances are that you might not see it in person. It grows at a high altitude of 3000 feet and more in the Cloud Mountains of Peru and southeastern Ecuador.

However, for those interested in having this prized addition to their home garden is that this rare orchid can be grown in cold to warm weather and it blooms year round. The most interesting fact about the Monkey faced orchid is that it smells like ripe oranges to easily make it the center of attraction of any garden where it is grown. However, it is a little ironic that its flower smells like ripe oranges as with a face like a monkey, you would expect the flower to smell like bananas, right?

The Dracula part of the name of this orchid comes from two long spikes from the sepals that look like fangs of Dracula as described in movies and fiction. One fact that many people are not aware of is that the scientific name Orchis Simia derives from the fact that this orchid plant grows from two oval shaped tubers that look like the testicles of a primate. The Greek word Orchis means testicles.

Monkey orchid is a perennial orchid and it has a very long life of many years. However, a plant starts to flower after 7 years of its germination requiring the owners to be patient to see the monkey faced flowers. But once it starts to flower, you can expect the plant to flower every year for nearly 19 years.

Leaves of Monkey Orchid are green in color and linear in shape. These leaves are rhizome and fleshy. A lot has already been said about the monkey faced flowers of this orchid. Interesting fact is that the flower of monkey orchid can be in different colors like red, purple, pink, blue, orange, white, green, and even brown. The three petals of the flower can have dots, stripes or bear no particular pattern yet look like the face of the monkey.

The best conditions for growing monkey orchid in your garden are temperatures of 42-46℉ at night and not more than a temperature of 68℉ during day time. This orchid requires a high humidity level of more than 65%. The soil should be made up of bark and sphagnum moss. Choose a pot that is large and has many holes in it. You can grow this orchid by planting the seed or through vegetative reproduction. The best thing with this species of orchid is that it can be grown any time of the year as it is perennial in nature. The size of the monkey orchid remains between 7 and 20 inches. It requires a heavy amount of water and shady conditions.

    1. Morning! Not sure what the day is going to be like, still too dark here, too. It only got into the upper teens last night but towards the week-end, it is supposed to plummet to negative’s at night and barely in the teens during the day. Such is winter in NE!

            if you can’t change an abusive situation, you have to change yourself to think you could survive and be better outside that situation.

      2. OK, that top one is me!!!! Big league!!! Trying to remember where I put that leftover chain I bought for my hanging planters to use to repair my suet feeders…..I’ve got 2 places to look yet: garage and patio. But I’ll wait until it’s warmer…..

Crime, in fact, is at an all time high! The Radical Left Democrats put him there. 90 days in jail, or 10 years (life!), depending on what you say about “Trump.” Our Country is going to Hell!

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Recently, I’ve shifted my focus to heavily observing the mainstream and Left-wing echo chambers. Studying how the media attempt their spins, and how well it is received by their followers, etc. There is a seismic shift happening amongst the normies. The pillars of their identity are slowly being proven to be a farce, and it’s breaking the cohesion of the Left and their followers.

    Based on my observations, I believe we are in the middle of a mass-normie-waking event by accumulation. “Death by a thousand cuts”, “straw that broke the camel’s back”, etc., and it’s reaching a breaking point. Even many of the Liberal talking heads are struggling to continue maintain the charade.

    This result is largely due to the public conversation being had, made possible by Elon freeing Twitter of Left-wing algorithm and bot manipulation. The normies are no longer shielded from public discourse like they were before. The comment sections are flooded with counter-arguments to MSM lies. Conservative voices are seeing increased exposure due to no longer being shadow-banned, and it’s making dividends in public perception.

    Flashback circa 2017, there were very few Conservative voices in the mainstream, Conservative trending hashtags, and counter-arguments in the comment sections. Twitter is like a different planet entirely now. Elon leveled the playing field, and now we are winning pretty handily.


    As for the normies, they appear to be very lost in their beliefs. Unsure what to think, what to believe, or how to act. The psychological trauma is inducing a “Fight or Flight” response. Most of them have opted for flight, going quiet/focusing on other distractions to avoid addressing the inevitable, leaving an opening for Conservative narratives to flourish. Some opted to fight, lashing out as a defense mechanism in response to their fear, amplifying the severity of their hatred for the Conservatives, creating more bulletin-board material for the Right.

    In conclusion, Elon’s intervention into Twitter’s nefarious criminal activity not only exposed unprecedented levels of corruption within the government and private enterprise; it paved the way for truth and logic to reign supreme via public discourse, which resulted in a consistent stream of organic mass normie-waking, followed by the current watershed of awakening.

    This outcome is what Elon means when he preaches “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” (The voice of the People, is the voice God). Allow the People to speak freely, and truth will out. The plan is working.

    My representatives were having very good talks with Radical Left NARA (“the Constitution & Bill of Rights are dangerous documents”) as per the Presidential Records Act and the “Socks” Case, which is what we were supposed to be doing, when the FBI RAIDED a very secure Mar-a-Lago – With Secret Service, Security Cameras, Home Guards, a Locked Storage Area (we actually added another lock at the FBI’s request), etc. We did everything right, the way it was supposed to be done.     My initial reaction to the news report from the Washington Post that Jeff Zients has been chosen to replace departing Ron Klain as President Biden’s chief of staff was the that where it really counts, Biden is sticking with a cis-gendered, heterosexual white male, despite his purported commitment for diversity. It’s one thing to have an incompetent black lesbian with a startling resemblance to Raggedy Ann as press secretary, where she reads from prepared notes almost certainly prepared by someone else (since she mispronounces the words written out for her so often). But with a senile, dim bulb president, the chief of staff pretty much runs the country, at the instruction of the puppet masters that put Biden into power in the first place.

    But the diversity hypocrisy is the least of it when it comes to Zients.     1. i found this @ tcth, so i read the replies…someone claims there is a death certificate…???

      hubby and i were just discussing this. hamlin was covered–I’m guessing goggles or sunglasses–a large hoodie coming over the forehead and further obscuring his face. when he arrived in the golf cart @ the facility–the windows were tinted and you couldn’t see in clearly.

      his mother and brother arrived separately and didn’t have any security and their faces were clearly visible.
      hamlin was bodily blocked from view by A LOT of security officers–more than the president even receives. and yes, it was snowing, but the pic of him in the sky box during the game was also face obscured.
      I told hubby it was too weird. hubby thinks i’m nuts–I am I guess. but i said to him, if damar has an “accident” after the super bowl and “dies” you know he died on that field and the nfl didn’t want to freak out the players and kill the super bowl $$$$.

            I love Eight O’Clock red package – ground or whole beans. I use a pour-over system so I don’t ever have burnt tasting coffee-maker coffee smell or taste. I have a cone filter holder that sits over a thermal carafe. I do have to reheat the coffee – but it’s good and better than burnt!

      1. I’ve heard explanations that make sense to me. i think it was at wolfs yesterday…
        something about the “evil ones” had planned on the lockdowns and mandates being around for YEARS “waiting” for a vax…controlling every part of our lives and warp speed thwarted that somewhat. trump always stressed choice–you want a vax, there is one, not a mandate…and he pushed many therapeutics–HCQ, ivermecton.
        he made the best of a bed situation and possibly did save millions of lives.
        we may never know
