When I think of Burgess Meredith, Grumpy Old Men usually comes to mind.  But in his younger days, Meredith played The Penguin—arch villain on the original Batman series.  What else is there to know about penguins, I wondered.  Here are some interesting facts I found out!

There are only 17 -20 penguin species living on our planet—scientists do not agree on the methodology apparently. 

Penguins are quite fast swimmers. Their speed is usually between 5 and 10 mph. However, they can reach a top speed of up to 22 mph!

The fastest of all penguin species is the Gentoo penguin.

The average lifespan of a penguin lies between 15 and 20 years, depending on the species.

In order to be able to raise their chicks, penguins come ashore.

The smallest penguin species is the little penguin, ranging from 12 to 16 inches. (laziest naming ever…LOL) These penguins are also called fairy penguins, or just little blue penguins.

The biggest penguin species is the emperor penguin, which can reach a height of up to 48 inches.

While emperor penguins can weigh up to 100 pounds, little penguins only weigh around 2 pounds.

Scientists estimate that extinct ancestors of penguins reached a height of up to 70 inches.

While some sources cite that the emperor penguin dived 1,850 feet, their maximum diving capacity is usually around 1,000 feet.

Most of the penguins usually only dive in a range from 16 – 65 feet.

Penguins can hold their breath up to 20 minutes while diving.

Penguins mainly feed on fishes, krill and squids.

Contrary to beliefs, penguins do not have any teeth.

Penguins lose all of their feathers every year. During this time, they are unable to swim, which may cause difficulties for them as they also cannot fish due to that.

The name penguin comes from an unrelated bird species “great auk”, which is already extinct.

Penguins are actually birds but don’t have wings. They have flippers instead.

Penguins are unable to fly.

In order to keep them warm in winter, penguins have many layers of feathers to protect against the cold.

Penguins are masters in controlling their blood flow. Once part of their body becomes too cold, they pump warm water in those parts in order to warm them up.Their biggest enemies penguins have to watch out for are leopard seals, killer whales and sea lions.

The closest relatives of penguins are albatrosses, divers and petrels.

Penguins can drink saltwater as well as freshwater in order to survive. Excessive salt will be excreted.

In order to be able to recognize their mating partner, each penguin has a specific unique sound frequency which it can use to gather with its partner and differentiate him from other penguins around.

Most of the penguin species live on the South Pole or Antarctica, while all of them, apart from the Galapagos penguin, live in the Southern hemisphere.

Don’t confuse Arctic with Antarctica. Penguins don’t live at the North Pole!

In order to reach higher initial speed, penguins often jump out of the water before they dive.

Although it might not be intuitive at first glance when you see penguins out of the water, they are perfectly disguised while swimming. Their white belly disguises them from predators below them, while their black back fits in the water surface and protects them from predators above them.

Penguins produce oil that makes them resistant against the cold water and also more agile underwater.

It is estimated that the average penguin colony varies from 200,000 to 500,000 individuals.

While some penguin species prefer to stay on land, there are also some species that spend up to 80% of their lifetime in the water.

The penguins’ body is built to dive and sink easily, as their bones are not hollow like for many other birds, but they rather have dense bones which make them quite heavy.

Instead of walking, penguins often move with their belly on the ice. It is not fully clear why they do it, but scientists estimate that it might be a faster way to move on ice compared to walking.

Penguins are usually quite trustful towards humans. This is probably learned behavior since most of their predators are underwater and they feel safe on land.

In cold times, penguins are not reluctant to get closer to each other. In fact, they use each other’s body temperature to warm and protect against the cold.

        1. Works great but it has that timer thing going on, with the automatic safety off feature. It cuts off after 2 hours but I just add a little water (and coffee grounds if it’s getting too weak) and hit brew again. That gives me another 2 hours. LOL

    Illegal immigrant Luis Saavedra Villa, a 44-year-old registered sex offender with a history of previous deportations, snuck back into our country and raped an 8-year-old girl in Wyoming.

    Villa kidnapped the young girl and brought her to McDonald’s in his truck while her mother was working. He is a known family acquaintance. After their meal, Villa locked the doors of his truck so his young victim couldn’t escape and violently raped the girl. He then forced her to clean her own blood from his truck.

    The girl was found and taken to the hospital for emergency surgeries.

    “[It] was one of the most egregious that we’ve seen,” Sweetwater County, Wyo., Sheriff John Grossnickle stated.

    “He was just allowed back into the country,” Grossnickle continued. “We had no idea that he was in Sweetwater County and received no communication of that.”

    Under the Biden regime, illegal immigrants are practically free to come and go as they please.

    It wasn’t always like that. Sherriff Grossnickle had more to say:

    During the Trump administration, we actively had federal authorities in our community working with us to enforce federal law, federal immigration law, simply on the basis of undocumented status, which is to say they came in because they were looking for someone who they knew was here illegally, and they were taking enforcement action on the basis of that immigration status in and of itself.

    The current administration, and very similar to our experiences with the Obama administration, in that there is no active cooperation to enforce federal immigration law simply on the basis of someone’s documented or undocumented status. Now the focus is only exclusively after they come here illegally, and then commit serious felony-level crime.     “What bothers me about this case more than anything else is that it didn’t have to happen,” Sweetwater County Attorney Dan Erramouspe told the Daily Caller. “And the damage of the fact these decisions being made in faraway Washington, D.C., they really don’t care.”

    Though Biden’s feds don’t usually take an interest in illegal immigrants, they stuck their noses into this case and wanted to deport Villa.

    “This is the only one case that I’m aware of that the feds were interested in,” Erramouspe declared.

    Grossnickle knows how easy it is for illegal immigrants — Villa even admitted it on a jail phone — but the sheriff wasn’t having it.

    Villa was sentenced to 125 years in prison. Thanks to Grossnickle and Erramouspe, Villa, a twice-convicted rapist — we know how popular they are in jail — will die in an American prison.

    “It’s not that hard, obviously, to get back into the country,” Sheriff Grossnickle stated. “So it was really an effort by law enforcement and prosecutors to seek the maximum sentence possible to do what we could and everything within our power and our laws to ensure that he wouldn’t ever have the opportunity to victimize somebody in this way ever again because he’s behind bars.”

    The sheriff had more to say:

    My biggest concern is the criminals that have been adjudicated that are coming back into our country and committing worse crimes than what they were deported for. And you can see that in this case. It was terrible what happened to this little girl and it’s going to happen more and more. And the way I look at it is with us being in the middle of the country, a lot of these criminals are gonna think they’re safe by coming into the middle of the United States away from where all the focus is down on the border, and it’s gonna take the smaller communities, it’s gonna take them over to where I don’t know what they’re gonna do with the resources or lack of resources to combat it.

    The White House did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for a statement.

    But this is where things get really interesting. “The Montreux Convention — Signed on July 20, 1936, the Montreux Convention regarding the Regime of the Straits gives Turkey control over the Bosporus Strait and the Dardanelles and regulates the passage of commercial vessels and warships. There is a clause, particularly for warships which is particularly applied the two Turkish Straits and is not used anywhere else in the world. The Convention brings serious restrictions on the passage of warships regarding their tonnage and the number of warships that can pass the straits in order to protect Turkey and the countries bordering the Black Sea. If the Montreux Convention is not applied to the Istanbul Canal, the NATO warships will easily reach the Russian waters. Another important aspect of the Montreux Convention is that naval ships not belonging to the Black Sea countries are allowed to stay in the Black Sea for no more than 21 days.”

    President Erdoğan is firmly of the opinion that the Montreux Convention will not apply to the new Istanbul canal. In fact the European Commission has already issued a declaration that President Erdoğan’s decision on this matter to be invalid. With this declaration, the EU has determined that:
    “On 26 June 2021 Recep Tayyip Erdoğan laid the foundation stone of the Istanbul Canal, which will connect the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, and went on to say that the project will take six years to complete.

    However, the project circumvents the 1936 Montreux Convention, which established the international status of the Turkish Straits and guarantees the free passage of civilian ships from the six Black Sea States. Turkey’s Minister for Transport stated that the canal would generate an annual revenue of USD 1 billion, which would gradually increase. Under the current regime, Turkey cannot charge a transit fee to merchant ships using the Bosporus. The canal would only generate revenue if shipping companies were to use it, which they will have no reason to do as long as the Bosporus passage remains free. It is clear that this is a unilateral action by Turkey to annul the convention, leaving uncontrollable geopolitical consequences for the region.”

      So, if the FBI illegally suppressed all of the really bad information on the Biden family (laptop!) at a level never seen before, (“it was Russian disinformation,” they said), while at the same time not letting the many positive things accomplished by “Trump” get out to the public, but would instead put out “bad stuff,” that would be the very definition of the Government’s RIGGING of an Election. Pollsters projected this Scam made a difference of Millions of votes. What are the CONSEQUENCES?

    1. Anything I could use? Hmmmm???? 😁😉😉😊😋🥰🤗😏 You know I already used all those tea lights weeks ago….WM has now figured out a way to gouge people even more. Now the only tea lights they carry are scented: some yellow flower, pumpkin spice, cinnamon sticks and evergreen. 50 lights for $5!!!! No, thank you – that used to be $2.50 for plain tea lights!!! I meant to run by Hobby Lobby but forgot….oh, well.

        boxes from stuff i no longer have…
        I will check in the basement to see if I have any more of those…might be in a box of Halloween decorations because I used them in my pumpkins…
