Fonthill Castle, Doylestown, PA

Fonthill Castle was the home of the archaeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer. Built between 1908 and 1912, it is an early example of poured-in-place concrete and features 44 rooms, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces, 10 bathrooms and one powder room. It is modeled after a 13th-century Rhenish castle, with Gothic doorways, 32 sudden stairways, dead ends and the 44 rooms are each in a different shape. It’s said that Harvard-educated Henry Chapman Mercer built his storybook stone mansion, with its turrets and balconies, from the inside out and without using blueprints.

The interior was originally painted in pastel colors, but age and sunlight have all but eradicated any hint of the former hues. One room in the Terrace Pavilion (built on the site of the former home’s barn), has a restored paint job so visitors can view the home’s former glory. The castle contains built-in furniture and is embellished with decorative tiles, made by Mercer at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. The castle is filled with an extensive collection of ceramics embedded in the concrete of the house, as well as other artifacts from his world travels, including cuneiform tablets discovered in Mesopotamia dating back to over 2300 BCE. The home also contains around 1,000 prints from Mercer’s extensive collection, as well as over six thousand books, almost all of which were annotated by Mercer himself.

The Castle was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was later included in a National Historic Landmark District along with the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works and the Mercer Museum. These three structures are the only poured-in-place concrete structures built by Mercer. The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is located on the same property as Fonthill Castle, and the Mercer Museum is located about a mile away.

Henry Chapman Mercer, an expert in prehistoric archaeology, a homespun architect and a writer of Gothic tales, built three memorable structures, including Fonthill Castle, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works and the Mercer Museum. These historic attractions make up what’s now known as the Mercer Mile.  Each of the buildings was constructed with reinforced concrete using a technique perfected by Mercer in the early part of the 1900s.

Mercer’s collection of books, prints and Victorian engravings are preserved in this grand home, whose stark concrete exterior belies the ornate and eccentric style of the interior.

    Martha’s Meltdown Model

The uproar at Martha’s Vineyard prompted the Democratic hierarchy to do some explaining. Why had it not earlier objected to the federal government night flights of tens of thousands of border-crossers to red-state communities that had opposed illegal immigration?

And why be angry with governors who were only emulating that policy by flying in a mere 50 newcomers —in the light of day—to a far wealthier and liberal-minded sanctuary resort?

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave the nearly all-white, rich vacation spot an opportunity to match noble words with even nobler deeds. But in response, the 1% screamed that their small community could not possibly cope with a mere 50 new arrivals.

They should ask how does a poor Yuma or El Paso sustain hundreds of thousands crossing illegally into their communities— once Joe Biden effectively rendered federal immigration law null and void?

BREAKING: FBI Director Christopher Wray hid from DOJ IG Horowitz the fact that Danchenko, the primary source for the Hillary-paid dossier, was brought on board the FBI payroll as an informant from 2017-2020, whereby he would have been obligated to cooperate and submit to IG questioning. By keeping his status secret, Wray denied Horowitz the opportunity to interview Danchenko before Horowitz ended his probe in 2019.

Inspectors general do not have the power to subpoena former government employees or outside third parties to testify. However, Danchenko would have been within reach of Horowitz’s investigators since he was on the FBI’s payroll. By blinding Horowitz to his status, Wray in effect obstructed the inspector general’s investigation of the #Spygate

An Arizona woman stands accused of smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants into the US after they coughed up as much as $15,000 a pop to get across the border, authorities said Sunday.

Tania Estudillo Hernandez, 24, allegedly smuggled between 80 and 100 migrants a month into the country for six months before she was arrested Friday. Hernandez was busted during a traffic stop while transporting a Guatemalan national, according to El Mirage, Ariz., police. Authorities were tipped off to the scheme when they received a report of a person being held for ransom at a house in the city.

  6. proxy voting is a way to get paid without doing your job. they do not need the fabulous salaries and perks if they DON’T EVEN SHOW UP FOR WORK!
    entire article
Even President Biden has admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic is “over.” Yet while the rest of society has long since moved on, Democrats in Congress are still refusing to actually show up and do their jobs.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi just extended “proxy voting” yet again, through November 10. As explained by the Congressional Institute, proxy voting is “a practice where one Member authorizes a colleague to vote on their behalf and instructs the colleague which way to vote.”

Basically, members of Congress—who collect $174,000 a year in taxpayer-funded salaries—don’t have to actually show up and do their jobs. They can just text a buddy to vote for them and get back to vacationing or campaigning.

Make no mistake: that’s what it’s all really about at this point.

I think it’s fair to say that at the beginning of the pandemic, many members of Congress, who tend to be rather, erm, elderly… may have earnestly wanted proxy voting as a way to avoid COVID-19. But they’ve long since had access to effective vaccines and, if we’re being honest, everyone’s been exposed to COVID one way or another by this point.

In reality, they’re exploiting proxy voting for cynical personal purposes.

“Rep. Karen Bass voted by proxy in the House… as she filed paperwork in Los Angeles to run for mayor,” the Los Angeles Times reports. “Rep. Mo Brooks did the same to campaign for a Senate seat, tweeting a picture of himself shaking hands with Alabama Republicans. Rep. Ro Khanna used proxy voting while sitting in a car in the Capitol parking lot, doing an online interview about his new book.”

Some Democratic members literally just don’t want to do their jobs. As the Austin-American Statesman reported, “Retiring Rep. Albio Sires, D-N.J., voted 100% of the time by proxy from January through April.”

Why does it matter if they’re in person or not?

“Conducting business in-person is integral to the work Congress does,” the Congressional Institute explains. “Meeting with constituents, speaking with staff about legislation, scurrying from one committee hearing to another: These are all activities that Members of Congress engaged in in-person prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“The very word ‘congress’ means ‘the act or action of coming together,’” it adds. “Congress thrives when Members and staff have strong bonds with each other. Conversely, when Members are unable or unwilling to work with each other, whether it is within a party or across the aisle, legislative muscles atrophy and the institution suffers.”

    It’s also just downright insulting.

From Day One of the COVID-19 pandemic, “essential workers” like grocery store clerks were expected to show up to work. But those who run the highest levels of our federal government can’t be bothered to?

There’s a partisan slant to this issue.

While some Republicans have taken advantage of proxy voting, Fox News reports that 72% of House proxy votes in 2021 were cast by Democrats—an overwhelming majority. More importantly, Republican leadership wants to end proxy voting. It’s the Democratic establishment that’s clinging to the practice.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has railed against the practice, calling it a “disgrace” and saying, “This Democrat Majority — they will destroy our economy and mortgage your future but can’t be personally bothered to make the trip to D.C. to do their jobs.”

We shouldn’t stand for it. If Congress is going to waste so much of our money, the absolute bare minimum we can demand is that they actually show up to their jobs.

  13. Excerpts @ BB: “Giorgia Meloni, leader of the Brothers of Italy party that won the most votes in Italy’s national election, was preparing to be the country’s first woman premier on Monday. The center-right coalition leader is bound for office declaring “We defend God, country, and family” built on opposition to gender ideology and the LGBT lobby alongside support for strong borders and an end to limitless mass migration.

Meloni sounded a moderate, unifying tone in a victory speech that noted Italians had finally been able to clearly determine who they wanted to govern and the direction they wished to go in defiance of establishment elites.

“Italians have sent a clear message in favour of a right-wing government led by Brothers of Italy,” she told reporters in Rome, holding up a sign saying “Thank you Italy.”

All of which has sent much of Europe into a gasping, political tail spin.

The vice president of the European Parliament, Katharina Barley of the Social Democrats of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, cast Meloni’s victory as “worrying” given her affiliations with Hungary’s leader Viktor Orban and former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Her electoral lip service to Europe cannot hide the fact that she represents a danger to constructive coexistence in Europe,” she was quoted as saying by German daily WELT, AP reports. “I am afraid of incompetence, not the fascist threat,″ said Roberto D’Alimonte, a political science professor at LUISS, a private university in Rome. ”She has not governed anything.”

He neglected to mention Meloni did serve as youth minister in Berlusconi’s last government a decade ago.”
    —————–
German magazine Stern splashed its front page with a photo of Meloni, under the banner: “The most dangerous woman in Europe.”

The Financial Times reports just last week E.U. commission chief Ursula von der Leyen put Rome in the same basket with Budapest and Warsaw as challengers to the overarching desire of the E.U. to govern all of Europe without exception or challenge to its own autocracy. “If things go in a difficult direction,” she said when asked about the Italian elections, “I’ve spoken about Hungary and Poland, we have tools.”

This was a reference to the rule of law disputes and funding freezes that both countries have experienced. The implied threat sparked outrage in Rome, particularly amongst the political right of center and online in the MIGA (“Make Italy Great Again”) circles, where von der Leyen was accused of interfering in the election.”

  14. Ah, trying to CYA using semantics!!! They aren’t denying the raid – they are just unhappy with the use of the words “SWAT team!”

EXCERPT @ BB: “The FBI has denied sending a swat team of 25-30 agents to arrest Catholic pro-life activist Mark Houck for allegedly shoving an escort outside of a Planned Parenthood clinic last year.

Outrage ensued among conservatives throughout the weekend when it was reported that the FBI subjected Houck’s children to a fully armored SWAT raid last week under the order of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
    ———————-
In a statement to Fox News on Sunday, a spokesperson with the FBI Philadelphia field office denied that a SWAT Team had been used to apprehend Mark Houck.

“There are inaccurate claims being made regarding the arrest of Mark Houck. No SWAT Team or SWAT operators were involved. FBI agents knocked on Mr. Houck’s front door, identified themselves as FBI agents and asked him to exit the residence. He did so and was taken into custody without incident pursuant to an indictment,” the FBI said.

The FBI did not deny that up to 25-30 armored agents were on the scene or that Houck’s children witnessed the agents pointing rifles at their father and mother to arrest him for allegedly shoving someone in front of an abortion clinic.

Houck’s wife told Catholic News Agency that a “SWAT team of about 25 came to my house with about 15 vehicles and started pounding on our door” and that they had “about five guns pointed at my husband, myself and basically at my kids.”
    ———————-
The report did not mention Ryan-Marie’s claim that the case had been thrown out of District Court prior to the Department of Justice picking up the charges. The FACE Act makes it a federal crime to intimidate, injure, or interfere with anyone attempting to provide abortion access. U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero said:

‘Assault is always a serious offense, and under the FACE Act, if the victim is targeted because of their association with a reproductive healthcare clinic, it is a federal crime. Our Office and the Department of Justice are committed to prosecuting crimes which threaten the safety and rights of all individuals.’

“Put simply, violence is never the answer,” said Jacqueline Maguire, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division. “Violating the FACE Act by committing a physical assault is a serious crime for which the FBI will work to hold offenders accountable.”

Houck could face up to 11 years in prison and fines up to $350,000 if found guilty.”

Russia’s Investigative Committee said the shooting took place in a school in Izhevsk, a city about 960 kilometers (600 miles) east of Moscow in the Udmurtia region. Those wounded were 14 children and 7 adults, the Committee said.

The governor of Udmurtia, Alexander Brechalov, said in a video statement that the still unidentified gunman shot himself. The school educates children between grades 1 and 11. It has been evacuated and the area around it has been cordoned off, the governor said.

According to the Investigative Committee, the gunman wore a black t-shirt with “Nazi symbols.” No other details about the shooter or his motives have been released.

  16. Entire Article @ BB: “The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles misled the judge who signed a search warrant that led to more than $86 million in cash being seized, the Los Angeles Times reported.

FBI agents suspected criminal activity at U.S. Private Vaults, a Beverly Hills store with more than 1,000 private safe-deposit boxes. The FBI opened its investigation into the business after local law enforcement and federal agents spotted suspected drug dealers and purchasers walking in and out of the store. FBI agents suspected criminal activity at the store because customers would arrive in cars with out-of-state license plates or rental cars, according to the search warrant affidavit.

“Based on my training and experience in money laundering investigations, Chicago, Illinois, is a hub of both drug trafficking and money laundering,” FBI agent Lynne Zellhart wrote. “I believe these patrons were using their USPV box to store drug proceeds.” Zellhart also claimed that the only people renting a box anonymously from the Beverly Hills storefront are “those who wish to hide their wealth from the DEA, IRS, or creditors would.”

Despite not backing up their suspicions with any facts, the FBI agents applied for a search warrant to determine the validity of their suspicions. However, recently unsealed court documents show that federal law enforcement misled the judge who ultimately approved the search warrant. In the search warrant affidavit, assistant U.S. attorney Andrew Brown wrote, “The warrants authorize the seizure of the nests of the boxes themselves, not their contents.”

United States Magistrate Judge Steve Kim approved the search warrant, but explicitly limited the scope of the search. “This warrant does not authorize a criminal search or seizure of the contents of the safety deposit boxes,” Kim wrote in the warrant. Despite pledging not to seize the contents of the private storage boxes, and Judge Kim’s direct order not to, law enforcement ultimately took the items found inside the seized storage boxes.

The FBI agents also violated the bureau’s policies on taking inventory of seized items. “Under FBI policy, it said, inspection of each box would “extend no further than necessary to determine ownership.” But agents’ inspection of the boxes went substantially further — just as the government planned, according to FBI records filed in court,” the Times reported.

However, the unsealed records also revealed that federal law enforcement had planned to confiscate the contents of each box the entire time. As the Los Angeles Times reported:

‘By the time Kim got the warrant request, the FBI had been preparing an enormous forfeiture operation for at least six months, according to Jessie Murray, the chief of the FBI’s asset forfeiture unit in Los Angeles.

In the summer of 2020, she testified, Matthew Moon, then one of the highest-ranking FBI agents in Los Angeles, asked her if her team “was capable of handling a possible large-scale seizure” of safe-deposit boxes at U.S. Private Vaults.

Murray told him yes. She recalled joining a conference call in late 2020 and another in early 2021 to plan forfeitures of the box contents with the U.S. attorney’s office, other federal and local agencies, and “maybe even our legal forfeiture unit at [FBI] headquarters in D.C.”

The FBI agents also wrote a memo that confirmed the planned forfeiture of the items within the boxes, the Times reported. As a result of the seizures, the FBI kept $86 million in cash, rare coins, gold, silver, and a plethora of luxury jewelry items. The FBI and U.S. Attorney maintain they did not mislead the judge or ignore his search warrant limits.

“At no time was a magistrate misled as to the probable cause used to obtain the warrants,” FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller said. Federal prosecutors similarly claimed the FBI did not have to tell the judge “how later actions, such as criminal investigations against boxholders or forfeiture of box contents, would play out,” acceding to court filings.

Box holders who had their property seized by federal agents filed a class-action lawsuit alleging the FBI’s raid violated their constitutional rights. “The government did not know what was in those boxes, who owned them, or what, if anything, those people had done,” wrote a lawyer for the nearly 400 box holders in the class-action lawsuit. “That’s why the warrant application did not even attempt to argue there was probable cause to seize and forfeit box renters’ property.”

The FBI ultimately posted a sign on the store’s window encouraging customers who had their property seized to step forward and claim it, without telling them they would be investigated, as one individual who tried to reclaim his property was.

The U.S. Attorney’s office did not prosecute the company’s owners pursuant to a plea agreement but ordered the business to pay a $1.1 million fine for laundering drug money. However, the Times reported that prosecutors admitted the business had no means to pay the fine.”

  17. Excerpt @ DC: “Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s “Commitment to America” agenda in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller on Friday, focusing specifically on one bullet point that suggests the GOP should subsidize the hiring of 200,000 new police officers through recruitment bonuses.

McCarthy presented his “Commitment to America” agenda to the House GOP conference on Thursday, laying out a series of priorities for Republicans to pursue if they retake the House in 2022.

“So if you see, like, the third bullet point in whatever this is suggests that the federal government needs to fund incentives for 200,000 new law enforcement. I do not believe in the federal government being excessively entangled in state and local law enforcement. It is not practical,” Gaetz told the Caller.

Gaetz also suggested that McCarthy may have gotten the idea from ex-GOP pollster and communications consultant Frank Luntz, noting that McCarthy rented a room in Washington, D.C., from Luntz and called him his “roommate.”

“It is unsound constitutionally. And it is disappointing to see something that doesn’t align with traditional Republican principles on federalism emerging out of some, you know, poll tested focus groups from the roommate of the minority leader,” Gaetz said.
    —————
“Publicly, the day the minority leader released his palm card calling for excessive federal involvement in local law enforcement, I stood on the floor and lambasted federal involvement in local law enforcement,” Gaetz added. “And what I’m telling you on the record is I’m against the federal government utilizing money as a way to impact behavior at the local level in the public safety space, and I’m against it whether Californian Nancy Pelosi pushes it or whether Californian Kevin McCarthy pushes it.”

Former Project Veritas investigator Allison Maass allegedly secured an internship at Democracy Partners with a false name and background, taping activities during her tenure with the firm’s knowledge, the outlet reported. The firm and co-founder Robert Creamer accused Project Veritas of using “heavily edited” footage in videos falsely suggesting they worked to incite violence at 2016 Trump rallies and plotted voter fraud promotion, costing plaintiffs contracts worth more than $500,000.

Democracy Partners reportedly worked for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign through the Democratic National Committee, according to The New York Times. Maass pretended to be the niece of Charles Roth, a Project Veritas operative posing as a rich donor.

The jury said Project Veritas was liable for breaking wiretapping laws and misrepresenting itself, Reuters reported. Overseeing U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman will still assess damages over a distinct jury finding that Maass intended to violate a fiduciary relationship, the verdict form indicates.

“Hopefully, the decision today will help to discourage Mr. O’Keefe and others from conducting these kind of political spy operations and publishing selectively edited, misleading videos in the future,” Creamer said following the verdict, The NYT reported.

Project Veritas declared it would file an appeal.

“The jury effectively ruled investigative journalists owe a fiduciary duty to the subjects they are investigating and that investigative journalists may not deceive the subjects they are investigating,” Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe argued. “Journalism is on trial, and Project Veritas will continue to fight for every journalist’s right to news gather, investigate, and expose wrongdoing – regardless of how powerful the investigated party may be. Project Veritas will not be intimidated.”

Project Veritas declined to comment further for the Daily Caller News Foundation.”

Rep. Elissa Sloktin: This is honestly, this is like — the political desperation. I rent at fair market value. I’ve shown my lease. He is someone who is renting his apartment. He is my landlord, and I think the thing that has really pushed me is that Tom Barrett has insinuated that I’m living with this man. If you believe I’m living with a man who is not my husband in the same apartment — just say it, man! Like, just come out. But I think that there is a push here that is beyond the normal. The idea that he is in government relations — 100 percent, I don’t challenge that. He’s a Michigan manufacturing company guy, but the idea that somehow there’s something bad going on — if I weren’t paying rent, that’d be one thing, but I’m paying fair market rent.

State Sen. Tom Barrett: I will say, look at this idea that somebody is living with the lobbyist when there are 1,513 available apartments in Lansing, Michigan, as of today.

Anchor: Do you really think she is living with a lobbyist

Slotkin: My husband and I would like to talk to you about that for insinuating that I’m living with another man.

Barrett: She claims that she is living in the residence owned by a lobbyist where he is also registered to vote. I don’t know the circumstances of that arrangement, but I am saying it is improper for a member of Congress to be living in a residence owned by a lobbyist where they are both registered to vote.

  21. Excerpt @ DC: “A medical doctor slammed Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams of Georgia on Fox News Thursday afternoon over Abrams’ comments on fetal heartbeats.

“I’m waiting to see what’s happening on social media, waiting for those warning signs for misinformation, because this is a flat-out lie,” Dr. Nicole Saphier, a radiologist, told the “Outnumbered” panel. “Facts matter, especially when you’re talking to people, especially when you’re in politics and you’re wanting people’s votes. People are going to believe what she has to say.”
    —————
“I’m going to deliver the truth and point out it is a complete lie, so at about three weeks after gestation – after conception, the heart of the cells of the heart starts to rhythmically contract so really, the heart starts beating at three weeks,” Saphier said. “Yes, you can start seeing the heartbeat 5-6 weeks after conception on the ultrasound, but that’s only because it’s so small and because of all the other structures in the way but that heart is contracting very easy early on. It is not a conspiracy, it is not anything to do with what she’s talking about, and I think she needs to be held accountable for the lies that are coming out of her mouth.”

        1. Except in cases of rape, she wasn’t FORCED to get pregnant!!!! And even in cases of rape, that is HER baby, too!!!! I can understand not wanting to keep the child but it’s not like there aren’t PLENTY of people out there who would love to adopt a newborn!

          1. i see a lot of “poverty” cases where the woman makes having babies HER income—welfare per child and food stamps…yet she has expensive hair extensions or weaves and weekly nail salon appointments.
it’s not the same “poverty” anymore…
            maybe not all…but enough

            1. Oh, I had my own experiences with that BS!!!! I tried to turn someone in who was BIGLY lying and soaking up resources that others truly needed. White gal – she had 2 babies, surgery on both knees – all on the government – worked out of her home cutting hair and selling drugs with her common-law hubby, who actually lived there but they lied about that, too.

They wouldn’t even take my call and told me flat-out they did NOT want to know. Meanwhile, I’m working full-time, single Mom, paying $300/mo to the bank just to keep my truck so I could continue working, and I couldn’t even qualify for food stamps!!!! Only if I sold my truck – the value was over $10K, which disqualified me, even tho the bank really owned it.

  22. Still only 68 on my patio at almost noon, even with bright sunshine and only a slight breeze. I am now into the “moving plants daily” phase – feeder/planter and 3 Vinca’s – in and out, in and out, in and out…..as long as it stays warm enough during the day, anyway, I’ll put them on my front porch where they will get sun most of the day. At night, they go on the counter in the BR. I expect I’ll be hauling out some grow lights once I have to keep them inside all the time.

Next spring, as long as all goes well with the feeder/planter, those 3 extras will get planted in the ground in the yard somewhere. Then I’ll only have to worry about bringing in the feeder/planter every winter. Hmmm…..unless……ya’ know, I’ve got some really pretty BIG ceramic pots just sitting around…..I could create…..with a big trellis…..and all 3 vines….well, we’ll see! I’ve got a big caddy to roll it outside in the spring…..I did that for years with my nectarine tree – SOB never did produce anything!

The latest cheap finch feeder I bought needs some of my jimmy-rig skills…..one end of the handle I need to hang it won’t stay in the hole now – I think when the squirrel knocked it off, a small end-piece broke off. So, I will have to run some wire thru the holes and make my own handle…..and I’m gonna have to re-screen at least half of my patio soon….sigh…it never ends!

      1. That really is the only venue for me to unleash what little creativity I possess, beyond my practical/mechanical-based skills. Doing something for the beauty of it alone…the symmetry….and my picture-taking hobby. I see these gorgeous views in our skies on a daily basis……

          1. On my drive back, when I was REALLY wanting my camera, I got to thinking about getting some instruction in how to use this fancy-schmancy camera I’ve got…..it is sooooo complicated. I can do videos on it, too, but I haven’t a clue how to do it.

“The United States Air Force Academy on Thursday held a seminar promoting “transgender visibility and awareness in our Air Force.” The “discussion” session focused “on awareness for transgender communities in the military,” according to a copy of an invitation for the event obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Events of this nature are part of a wholesale push by the U.S. military to foster a more culturally inclusive environment. Critics say this type of training is part of a woke cultural agenda that is being mainstreamed by the Democratic Party’s far-left flank. The Army, for instance, mandates gender identity training and instructs its officers on the best time to offer subordinates gender-transition surgery. The seminar was held on the same day the Free Beacon reported on an Air Force Academy course teaching cadets to “use inclusive language” that avoids gender pronouns.

The “transgender visibility” workshop featured two Air Force Academy faculty members, Dr. Joseph Currin and Dr. Karin De Angelis. The speakers were slated to “speak on their personal expertise and answer questions from the audience.”

The first 40 cadets to attend the seminar received a free lunch. A cadet listed as a point of contact for the event, did not answer a Free Beacon request for comment.”

“The New York Times reported last year, according to three sources “briefed on the matter,” that the Justice Department was investigating Trump darling Matt Gaetz for sex-trafficking a 17-year-old girl. Big if true.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mused that, if the allegations were true, Gaetz should be removed from the House Judiciary Committee. Late night polemicist Stephen Colbert quipped that the congressman was not allowed within 50 feet of elementary schools. And the Daily Beast last month ran a story headlined: “Eight Sources Say Feds are Not Done with Matt Gaetz.”

Turns out, the feds are very much done with Matt Gaetz. Whatever his other blind spots—and there are many—they appear not to involve the sex trafficking of underage women. Per the Washington Post, a conviction of the congressman is unlikely due to “credibility questions with the two central witnesses,” so career Justice Department officials are recommending against a prosecution.

Here is, or was, the thing about our system of justice. Everybody from model citizens to sleazy politicians is supposed to enjoy the due process of law. In Gaetz’s case, that system was circumvented, undermined, and abused by what we can safely assume are politically motivated law enforcement officials who, working in concert with their allies in the mainstream media, succeeded in casting a cloud over the Florida lawmaker with lurid and appalling accusations they could not prove in a court of law.

Compare Gaetz’s treatment by the Department of Justice with the tight-lipped handling of the ongoing probe into Hunter Biden, which we have to guess has turned up a salacious thing or two that hasn’t made its way to the press.

And remember the contrast between them the next time President Joe Biden and his friends get on their high horse for the next lecture about the right wing’s inappropriate attacks on the integrity of our law-enforcement officials. They’ve been richly earned.”

  25. A California high school with a “Social Justice Academy” is suffering in more traditional subjects like math, where students are getting dismal scores.

San Leandro High School’s Social Justice Academy is a three-year “rigorous” and “career-themed” program for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, according to the academy’s website. It is one of three academy programs offered at the high school, and students must apply for admission.

The academy’s “specially designed curriculum” focuses on critical pedagogy, social justice, ethnic studies, gender studies, intersectionality, and social and emotional skill development among other things. The curriculum teaches students to “challenge and criticize power, oppression, capitalism, white supremacy, imperialism, colonialism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, cisheteropatriarchy, ableism, and xenophobia on the internal, interpersonal, institutional, and ideological levels.”

However, learning about these issues is not enough, the academy says. During their senior year, academy students are required to become activists. They must develop and run campaigns, which can be global in scope. The academy also says it encourages students to reimagine themselves and their communities “outside of the master narrative” and values “radical healing” and “transformative solidarity.” The academy started in 2006, but the founders focused on things like multiculturalism and lacked the “holistic humanization and critical consciousness” the students needed, the academy’s website says.

Meanwhile, some core curriculum academics are suffering at the high school.

San Leandro High School has a 19% math proficiency rate and 21% science proficiency rate, well below California’s average of 30% proficiency in both math and science, according to U.S. News and World Report. The school’s reading proficiency rate is 57%, also below the state average. The vast majority, 92%, of San Leandro High School’s students are minorities, and about 57% are considered economically disadvantaged. The high school serves more than 2,600 students, and, despite their low math scores, most still go on to graduate. The high school has a graduation rate of about 92%, above the 2019 national average of 86%.

“This school’s mission is based entirely on critical race theory and critical gender theory,” Erika Sanzi, director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “If a school wants to train activists for particular ideological causes like dismantling capitalism or challenging cisheteropatriarchy, they shouldn’t be doing it on the public dime,” Sanzi added.

California is not the only place where school districts have adopted social justice-inspired curricula. Across the country, parents have complained about their young children learning ultra-progressive concepts in school including racial themes and gender identity. In many cases, parents have simply pulled their children out of public school in favor of alternatives like homeschooling.

In Rhode Island, a mom sued her child’s school district after saying it had barred parents from secret meetings of the taxpayer-funded Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Advisory Board. Meanwhile, public school enrollment has plummeted 1.3 million students since before the pandemic began. California’s enrollment is down 1.7%.

Also earlier this month, national test results showed that the pandemic wiped out two decades of progress in math and reading among 9-year-olds. The drop affected children from all races and income levels but was particularly devastating for students who tended to struggle more.”
