Washington, DC on Fire

The Burning of Washington was a British invasion of Washington City (now Washington DC), during the War of 1812. It is the only time since the Revolutionary War that a foreign power has captured and occupied the capitol of the United States.

The United Kingdom was already at war with France when the Americans declared war in 1812, but the war with France took up most of Britain’s attention and military resources. The initial British strategy against the United States focused on imposing a partial blockade at sea, and maintaining a defensive stance on land. Reinforcements were held back from Canada and reliance was instead made on local militias and native allies to bolster the British Army in Canada. However, with the defeat and exile of Napoleon in April 1814, Britain was able to use its now available troops and ships to prosecute its war with the United States

Following the defeat of American forces at the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814, a British force led by Major General Robert Ross marched to Washington. That night, British forces set fire to multiple government and military buildings, including the White House (then called the Presidential Mansion), the Capitol Building, as well as other facilities of the government. The attack was in part a retaliation for American destruction in Canada: U.S. forces had burned and looted its capitol the previous year and then had burned buildings in Port Dover. Less than a day after the attack began, a heavy thunderstorm—possibly a hurricane—and a tornado extinguished the fires. The occupation of Washington lasted for roughly 26 hours.

President James Madison, military officials, and his government evacuated and were able to find refuge for the night in Brookeville, a small town in Maryland, which is known today as the “United States’ Capital for a Day.”; President Madison spent the night in the house of Caleb Bentley, a Quaker who lived and worked in Brookeville. Bentley’s house, known today as the Madison House, still exists. Following the storm, the British returned to their ships, many of which required repairs due to the storm.

Rear Admiral George Cockburn had commanded the squadron in Chesapeake Bay since the previous year. On June 25, he wrote to Admiral Alexander Cochrane stressing that the defenses there were weak, and he felt that several major cities were vulnerable to attack. Cochrane suggested attacking Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia. Rear Admiral Cockburn accurately predicted that “within a short period of time, with enough force, we could easily have at our mercy the capital”. He had recommended Washington as the target, because of the comparative ease of attacking the national capital and “the greater political effect likely to result”.  Major General Ross was less optimistic. He “never dreamt for one minute that an army of 3,500 men with 1,000 marines reinforcement, with no cavalry, hardly any artillery, could march 50 miles inland and capture an enemy capital”.  Ross also refused to accept Cockburn’s recommendation to burn the entire city. He spared nearly all of the privately owned properties.

The Capitol was, according to some contemporary travelers, the only building in Washington “worthy to be noticed”, so it was a prime target for the British. Upon arrival into the city, the British targeted the Capitol (first the southern wing, containing the House of Representatives, then the northern wing, containing the Senate). Prior to setting it aflame, the British sacked the building (which at that time housed Congress, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court).

Capitol Buildiong prior to the fire 1814

The British intended to burn the building to the ground. They set fire to the southern wing first. The flames grew so quickly that the British were prevented from collecting enough wood to burn the stone walls completely. However, the Library of Congress’s contents in the northern wing contributed to the flames on that side. Among the items destroyed was the 3,000-volume collection of the Library of Congress and the intricate decorations of the neoclassical columns, pediments, and sculptures.  The wooden ceilings and floors burned, and the glass skylights melted because of the intense heat. The building was not a complete loss however; the House rotunda, the east lobby, the staircases, and Latrobe’s famous Corn-Cob Columns in the Senate entrance hall all survived.

After burning the Capitol, the British turned northwest up Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House. After US government officials and President Madison fled the city, the First Lady Dolly Madison received a letter from her husband, urging her to be prepared to leave Washington at a moment’s notice. Dolley organized the enslaved and other staff to save valuables from the British. It has often been stated in print, that when Mrs. Madison escaped from the White House, she cut out from the frame the large portrait of Washington (now in one of the parlors there), and carried it off. She had no time to do that. It would have required a ladder to get it down. Instead, it was later revealed in a journal that the French door-keeper and the gardener were actually responsible for removing and saving the portrait. All she carried off was the silver in her handbag, as the British were thought to be but a few squares off, and were expected any moment. The soldiers burned the president’s house, and fuel was added to the fires that night to ensure they would continue burning into the next day.

Dolly Madison

The day after the destruction of the White House, Rear Admiral Cockburn entered the building of the D.C. newspaper, the National Intelligencer, intending to burn it down. However, several women persuaded him not to because they were afraid the fire would spread to their neighboring houses. Cockburn wanted to destroy the newspaper because its reporters had written so negatively about him, branding him “The Ruffian”. Instead, he ordered his troops to tear the building down brick by brick, and ordered all the “C” type destroyed “so that the rascals can have no further means of abusing my name”.

The British then sought out the United States Treasury and the Department of War in hopes of finding money or items of worth, but the Treasury only held old records and the only items remaining in the War and State Department were letters and appointment recommendations. Still, the buildings were burned.  “When the smoke cleared from the dreadful attack, the Patent Office was the only Government building … left untouched” in Washington.

The Americans had already burned much of the historic Washington Navy Yard, the frigate USS Columbia and the USS Argus to prevent the British from obtaining stores of ammunition and guns. In the afternoon of August 25, General Ross sent two hundred men to secure a fort on Greenleaf’s Point. The fort, later known as Fort McNair, had already been destroyed by the Americans, but 150 barrels of gunpowder remained. While the British were trying to destroy it by dropping the barrels into a well, the powder ignited. As many as thirty men were killed in the explosion, and many others were maimed.

Fort McNair today

Less than four days after the attack began, a sudden, very heavy thunderstorm—possibly a hurricane—put out the fires. It also spun off a tornado that passed through the center of the capital, setting down on Constitution Avenue and lifting two cannons before dropping them several yards away and killing British troops and American civilians alike. Following the storm, the British troops returned to their ships, many of which were badly damaged. There is some debate regarding the effect of this storm on the occupation. While some assert that the storm forced their retreat, it seems likely from their destructive and arsonous actions before the storm, and their written orders from Cochrane to “destroy and lay waste”, that their intention was merely to raze the city, rather than occupy it for an extended period. It is also clear that commander Robert Ross never intended to damage private buildings as had been recommended by Cockburn and Alexander Cochrane.

Whatever the case, the British occupation of Washington lasted only about 26 hours. Despite this, the “Storm that saved Washington”, as it became known, did the opposite according to some. The rains sizzled and cracked the already charred walls of the White House and ripped away at structures the British had no plans to destroy (such as the Patent Office). The storm may have exacerbated an already dire situation for Washington D.C.

President Madison and the military officers returned to Washington by September 1, on which date Madison issued a proclamation calling on citizens to defend the District of Columbia. Congress did not return for three and a half weeks, and when they did, they assembled in special session on September 19 in the Post and Patent Office building at Blodgett’s Hotel, one of the few buildings large enough to hold all members to be spared. Congress met in this building until December 1815, when construction of the Capitol was complete.

    1. What an interesting open, Pat!!! I knew nothing about the War of 1812! Oh, it was touched on in my American History class when I was a junior but, by then, I wasn’t paying a lot of attention and history bored me back then.

Yeah, Windows updates suck, which is why I have mine turned off.

  5. fib whistleblowers says they were not permitted to look at hunter’s laptop for fear of altering thev election. by NOT looking at it, AND calling it russian disinformation, they did just that.
    entire article
FBI whistleblowers: in 2019, local leaders told FBI agents, ’you will not look at that Hunter Biden laptop’
    By Thomas Lifson

Senator Ron Johnson has disclosed some of what multiple FBI whistleblowers have told him about the Bureau’s suppression of investigation into the laptop computer abandoned by Hunter Biden at a Wilmington computer repair shop, in a letter sent to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, Jerry Dunleavy of the Washington Examiner has the story, and quotes Senator Johnson:

“Whistleblowers have recently contacted my office to share serious concerns about the FBI’s handling of Hunter Biden’s laptop,” Johnson told Horowitz, telling the watchdog that after the FBI obtained the laptop from a Delaware computer shop in late 2019, local FBI leadership told bureau employees that “you will not look at that Hunter Biden laptop” and that the FBI is “not going to change the outcome of the election again,” the whistleblowers said.

Johnson said the new whistleblower claims “allege that the FBI did not begin to examine the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop until after the 2020 presidential election — potentially a year after the FBI obtained the laptop in Dec. 2019.” (snip)

“It is clear to me based on numerous credible whistleblower disclosures that the FBI cannot be trusted with the handling of Hunter Biden’s laptop,” Johnson told Horowitz this week. “I call on you to immediately investigate the FBI’s handling of Hunter Biden’s laptop and begin by obtaining the history of the investigative actions taken by the FBI on Hunter Biden’s laptop which should be available on the FBI’s case management system, Sentinel.”

This is, of course, in addition to the FBI wrongly claiming that thee laptop was Russian “disinformation.”

The worries about changing the outcome of an election are ironic, given that the laptop came into its possession long before the 2020 presidential election, and given that the Bureau had no problem raiding Mar A Lago less than 3 months before the midterms.

Let’s hope that more whistleblowers come forward and that they have plenty of documentary evidence.

  6. someone who has held top security clearance make 3 valid points abouot the mar-a-lago raid
    entire article
I am someone who has held a TS/SCI (Top Secret — Special Comparted Information) security clearance. Moreover, I have had a facility clearance for my home so that I could handle classified information there. Having had that experience, I get more than a little annoyed at the speculative misinformation that all parties in the Mar-a-Lago affair are spreading around. Granted, my security experience was before my retirement a decade ago, but I doubt much has changed since then.

I make three points. The first is that the Justice Department is blowing smoke. They are either completely incompetent or deliberately abusing their authority by lying to the court. The second point is that the investigative media (including Fox News) have not done their homework and have not found out how the security system actually works. The third point illustrates the first. In no legal sense is Donald Trump guilty of anything. This is because, as a former president, he has both a TS/SCI personal clearance and the same level of facility clearances for his various locations.

To complete the circle, the first two points follow from the third: the Justice Department has charged Donald Trump with violating security regulations by having inappropriate classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Well, as president, Trump’s home, and probably everywhere he may reside or work, automatically has a TS/SCI facility clearance. And so his home is appropriate for the safekeeping of classified documents.

I note that Mar-a-Lago is under 24/7 protection by the Secret Service. This automatically meets the requirements for the safety of a very high-level facility clearance. Moreover, an extra degree of protection was installed, at the government’s request, when a lock was put on the door where the documents were stored. The government cannot then legitimately claim that those documents were improperly secured.

In addition, unless there are extraordinary circumstances, high-level security clearances remain in effect for at least three years after employment. Donald Trump has been unemployed by the government for only a year and a half.

Then there is the question of whether the documents in question were even classified. Donald Trump, while he was still president, is said to have bulk-declassified the papers that were to be taken to Mar-a-Lago. Furthermore, Donald Trump did not personally supervise the transport of documents to Mar-a-Lago, and therefore he cannot be held responsible for their detailed contents.

What is interesting here is that Trump had specifically ordered the declassification of all materials related to the FBI’s involvement in Russiagate and related matters. But it seems this declassification was not carried out. In other words, the involved people in the Justice Department apparently refused a direct presidential order. I suspect that this is really behind what is going on. I suspect that the FBI and the Justice Department are trying to cover their tracks. Be prepared for a substantial number of documents to turn up missing.

Well, this is just my opinion based on my past experience. But I do wish that journalists, and supposedly expert attorneys — commentator attorneys and Trump’s attorneys both — would do their homework and find out just how the security system actually works. And then please let us all (including the judge) know. We might, as a result, have a very different picture of what is really going on.

  7. entire article at american thinker about student loan scam

Student loan debt was accelerated by the Democrat’s Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, which was introduced two weeks after President Obama took office. The education portion of the legislation kicked private lenders out of the student-loan business so social engineering Democrats at Sallie Mae could provide unlimited student loans, à la Fannie Mae’s unlimited mortgage loans. Private lenders merely service the loans, while Sallie Mae designs the loan criteria and purchases the loans.

Previously, private banks owned the loans and limited them to what they felt the student could repay. With banks out of the way, there is no cap on tuitions, employee and professorial pay, or retirement pensions. Under this setup, tuitions grow quickly and student debt typically exceeds the down payment for their first home. It may not matter, since such crushing debt is preventing many of them from buying a home.

With resistance to high tuitions from parents out of the way and prudential limitations by banks gone, universities accelerated tuitions dramatically. From the beginning, the intent was to dip into deep pockets of the taxpayers. President Obama offered to pay off debt for students that joined the government. What a scam.

It has left some students indebted for life, while the administrators and professors retire at age fifty-five with arrogated $120,000 per year pensions. Now President Biden wishes to pay off most of the debt that the government planned and created.

This is a lose-lose for parents and their children. Parents pay the higher tax and there can be no better way to destroy our youth’s attitude toward good credit than student loan debt forgiveness. It is okay to borrow and not pay it back.

For those not blessed with a bailout, the debt-induced delay of purchasing a home with a thirty-year mortgage makes paying off the home a fleeting dream. This nearly eliminates the opportunity to own their home with no debt — their best chance to escape poverty.

  9. Snapped this pic of the sunset last night. We got some nice showers overnight and had another one this morning with the sun shining at the same time! LOL – we may have more on the way so the mowing may not get done today either. Oh, well!

I called Mom this morning to ask her how she thought my peaches tasted in comparison to CO peaches. I can’t tell the difference. She said they aren’t quite as good as the CO peaches but the best she’s ever tasted of NE-grown peaches. She should have my 2 gallons ready by late today or tomorrow. She’s going to try to get enough so I can give Michael a half-gallon; if not, she’ll just put some of mine in a small container for him. He’s such a good friend and we help each other out when we can.

It appears that the red-headed Woodpeckers have migrated already. I saw an Oriole this morning but they are few and far between now.

      1. Well, 2 gallons will last a while. I’ll have a bowl every night, tho, you can bet on that! LOL – she had modified her recipe, adding peach jello, as well as some peach flavoring – it didn’t taste “peachy” enough for her. I tasted it and didn’t like it nearly as much as the original, so she will make it that way – it is much creamier than her current recipe.

Scientists are calling a small popcorn farm in western NE the “Farm of the Future.” He uses a new-fangled pivot telemetry-control irrigation system with an integrated control center that manages even the fertilizer applications, as well as computer-controlled tractors, trucks and their storage facility, tying it directly back to the markets and the consumer, eddy covariance flux towers that measure evapotranspiration (loss of water from the soil both by evaporation and by transpiration from the plants growing thereon), and a drone that measures growth of the popcorn. He got a grant from the University of NE Farm Program, which is funding a lot of it, with the goal of ending world hunger. The University believes that the modern technology may increase production by 30%.

“Fox News Goes Scorched Earth Against Trump—Steve Doocy & Bret Baier are headed straight for the iceberg!”

In a shocking move that signaled its full support for stopping President Trump from running in 2024, Fox News published an opinion piece by Democrat lawyer Bradley Moss which claimed the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago was legal and justified.

Bradley Moss is an infamous Democrat troll who has publicly supported the false claims of national security “experts” about Russiagate, and other anti-Trump hoaxes, for several years. Publishing an op-ed by Bradley Moss on the Mar-a-Lago raid is like promoting a book on marital fidelity by Hugh Hefner or asking Harvey Weinstein for tips on dating — it’s such an absurd idea that it reeks of bad faith.

It’s the strongest possible sign yet that Fox News will try to stop President Trump’s 2024 run by any means necessary.

Meanwhile, Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham appeared on Lisa Boothe’s podcast this week to say that: “People conflate Trump with people’s overall sense of happiness in the country. Donald Trump’s been a friend of mine for 25 years, and I’m always very open about this on my show. But, you know we’ll see whether that’s what the country wants. The country I think is so exhausted. They’re exhausted by the battle, the constant battle, that they may believe that, well, maybe it’s time to turn the page if we can get someone who has all Trump’s policies, who’s not Trump.”

Last week, the passive-aggressive cookbook guru Steve Doocy announced on Fox & Friends that Trump needed to “tamp down the rhetoric” because he was being too mean to the Justice Department and the FBI after the raid on his mansion. This week, Doocy displayed his immense ignorance once again by telling the world that he was totally unaware that past presidents lawfully retain classified documents all the time.

In fact, Steve Doocy has felt liberated recently to be the liberal Democrat that he has always been in real life.

Curiously, Steve Doocy wants his audience to understand that he will never stop protecting the image of the FBI and he will never stop praising the integrity of the FBI — it makes you almost wonder if he basically works for the FBI.

And let’s not forget that — just last month! — Fox News’ gasbag-in-chief Bret Baier tried his best to make GOP voters “dump Trump” over the January 6th Unselect Committee show trial, and its parade of bogus “witnesses” with their unreliable “testimonies.”

Speaking of trash testimony — hello again to the currently unemployed guy who called Arizona early for Biden at Fox News, Chris Stirewalt!

Where does Fox News find all these useful idiots?

The covert policy at Fox News for many years has been to hire Democrats on the news division side until they blow themselves up publicly with their barely-contained anti-conservative bias. This policy explains their rotating White House correspondent problem: Major Garrett to John Roberts to Kristin Fisher to Jacqui Heinrich.

Major Garrett is currently hawking a dumb book that says the 2020 election was the most secure election in history. Seriously. He’s a Democrat. Kristin Fisher moved to CNN. She’s a Democrat.
John Roberts is Canadian, and he used to work at CNN. He’s a Democrat. As for current hire Jacqui Heinrcih — who is she kidding?

Based on his latest stunts, Steve Doocy has now moved up several slots on my list of “Who Gets Bounced Next” at Fox News — moving him slightly ahead of Kennedy and Neil Cavuto. Sandra Smith and Martha MacCallum and John Roberts are still miles ahead of Doocy on the chopping block of course — and a few of them will probably soon join Shepard Smith, Chris Wallace, Jedediah Bila, Melissa Francis, Leland Vittert, Kristin Fisher, Bill Sammon, Abby Huntsman, Chris Stirewalt, and all the other geniuses who parroted Paul Ryan’s talking points during the Trump years.

Do you remember any of those people? Fox News certainly hopes that you don’t.”

    FTA

Humanitarian groups in Washington, D.C., could receive up to $50 million in additional aid to assist migrants being bused from southern border states under a proposed bill from congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC).

The proposed bill would bolster the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program by providing an additional $50 million to go toward humanitarian assistance for migrants arriving in D.C. Congress has already allocated $150 million to the EFSP for migrant aid for the current fiscal year, with about $85 million remaining in that fund as of July 21.

    1. Entire Article @ NY Post: “Steven Hoffenberg, the disgraced businessman and longtime mentor of Jeffrey Epstein, was found dead Tuesday when Connecticut police discovered his rotting corpse during a wellness check, the Post has learned. Authorities discovered Hoffenberg, who spent 18 years in prison for running a half a billion dollar Ponzi scheme, dead in his home around 8 p.m. Tuesday. It is not clear exactly when he died.

Police had been called to the 77-year-old’s home in Darby, CT at the request of a friend. No cause of death has been revealed, but police said there were no immediate signs of trauma to his body. “Every indication is that it is Mr. Hoffenberg,” a Derby, Conn., Police Department spokesman said. “There’s nothing to suggest that it isn’t. We believe it’s him. We’re just waiting for dental records.”

In a statement posted to Facebook, police said the body was found “in a state where a visual identification could not be made.”

Steven Hoffenberg has claimed that Epstein was his accomplice in a Ponzi scheme he ran through his Towers Financial Corp. He pleaded guilty to the scheme in 1995, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. While Hoffenberg sat locked up, Epstein was allegedly raping teenage girls with the help of his now-convicted madame, Ghislaine Maxwell.

Tower investors have claimed in an August 2018 lawsuit that Epstein “knowingly and intentionally utilized funds he fraudulently diverted and obtained from this massive Ponzi scheme for his own personal use to support a lavish lifestyle.”

“He was my colleague daily, seven days a week,” he said of Epstein in a 2019 interview in Quartz. Hoffenberg briefly funded The Post from January-March 1993, before losing control of the paper.

A former Trump Tower resident, Hoffenberg was an early backer of former President Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, but withdrew his support. He became a born-again Christian in prison, he told Quartz.”

  19. Satire from Free Beacon:

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.) had some choice words for Dr. Anthony Fauci, the career bureaucrat who announced his retirement earlier this week. “I’m just sick of seeing him,” the governor told supporters at a GOP rally in Seminole County on Wednesday. “I know he says he’s going to retire. Someone needs to grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac.”

    Analysis:

Most Americans are sick of seeing Fauci, who is constantly on television scolding them for refusing to mask their toddlers. He’s been the subject of multiple children’s books and appeared on the cover of numerous glossy magazines posing like a goddamn movie star. Speaking of which, Brad Pitt portrayed him on Saturday Night Live. You can find his likeness on prayer candles, bobblehead dolls, and Christmas ornaments. There is even an Anthony Fauci coloring book for emotionally unstable perverts.

Fauci was revered as a celebrity and quasi-religious figure by arrogant nerds and other preternaturally obnoxious individuals. A more humble scientist might have shunned the spotlight, but Fauci reveled in it. He never missed an opportunity to congratulate himself and remind Americans how lucky they were to have him in charge. He recently accepted an award typically reserved for Major League Baseball players, and coined a new term—”the Fauci Effect”—to explain how he became the embodiment of “consistency,” “integrity,” and “truth.” He routinely dismissed his critics as “anti-science.”

Meanwhile, normal Americans just wanted to know when their children could go back to school. They stopped listening to Fauci and other so-called experts, whose self-righteous pronouncements about the COVID-19 pandemic were confusing, contradictory, and tainted by politics. President Joe Biden promised to “shut down the virus” by deferring to science experts. Fauci described the “liberating feeling” of serving under a Democrat. More than 634,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 since Biden took office, which is roughly 226,000 more deaths than occurred on Donald Trump’s watch.

Fauci will turn 82 in December, which means he’s even older than Biden. That’s way too old to be working in government. He should have retired 20 years ago. As to whether the doctor resembles a “little elf,” the evidence overwhelmingly supports DeSantis’s claim. Fauci is generously listed at 5 feet 7 inches, but a Washington Free Beacon analysis suggests that is a blatant lie. He appears to be even shorter than former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who is generously listed at 5 feet 5 inches. If Fauci can’t even be honest about his own height, how can the American people expect him to tell the truth about science?

Based on the available evidence, someone does need to chuck that little elf across the Potomac. Unfortunately for DeSantis, the act he describes is not physically possible. Even at its narrowest point, the Potomac River is still more than 1,000 feet wide. For the sake of context, the Olympic record for the javelin throw is 98.5 meters, or 323 feet. A javelin weighs less than two pounds, whereas Fauci presumably weighs at least 75 pounds. DeSantis would have been on less shaky ground had he said that someone needs to grab that little elf, chuck him in a trebuchet and catapult him across the Potomac.

    Verdict: Mostly True

It is difficult to fault DeSantis’s logic regarding Dr. Fauci. We’re tired of seeing him. He should have retired by now. He deserves to be chucked across the Potomac. The governor’s statement implies, however, that a single human chucking the little elf across the Potomac is not only desirable but also physically possible. Desirable? Of course. Physically possible? Sorry, governor. DeSantis gets One Clinton for his failure to explain that successfully chucking Fauci across a river as large as the Potomac would require the assistance of a trebuchet or other form of catapult.”

“A progressive Virginia prosecutor this year dropped charges against a felon with a history of gun charges. Months later, that felon killed two innocent men.

In July, Francis Rose shot two “innocent bystanders” in the head while robbing an apartment complex in Alexandria, Va., according to police. In February, he was freed from jail by the office of Arlington County commonwealth’s attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti (D.). Rose, who was already on probation for illegally carrying a weapon in Washington, D.C., was arrested in October 2020 for possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine and fentanyl with intent to distribute.

The double murder is the latest instance where soft-on-crime Virginia prosecutors enabled violent felons. Dehghani-Tafti’s ally Steve Descano (D.), Fairfax County’s top prosecutor, released three offenders with gun charges who each went on to murder. Both prosecutors’ campaigns received over $600,000 from the Democratic megadonor George Soros. Like Soros-backed prosecutors across the country, Dehghani-Tafti and Descano have abolished cash bail and pushed for decarceration.

“What happened in Alexandria was senseless and tragic,” Virginia attorney general Jason Miyares told the Washington Free Beacon. “Unfortunately, it continues to be true that the vast majority of violent crime is committed by the same repeat offenders.”

Police announced the double homicide of Adrian de Jesus Rivera Guzman and his step-son, Juan Carlos Anaya Hernandez, on Tuesday. Rose’s victims were landscape workers who had escaped gang-led violence in their native El Salvador.

Arlington police arrested Rose during a traffic stop in 2020 after finding a loaded handgun, cocaine, and fentanyl on him. In February, a county judge ruled the search unconstitutional. The evidence was not legally admissible because the drugs and gun were “appended” to Rose rather than in the car, his defense attorney argued, according to the Washington Post. Dehghani-Tafti’s office dropped the charges following the judge’s ruling and criticized the arresting officers’ conduct.

But before the ruling, a prosecutor in Dehghani-Tafti’s office praised the officers’ conduct, according to the Arlington Coalition of Police. Her office held Rose in jail without bond for more than a year before his trial, the law enforcement group said, implying prosecutors believed the officers had acted lawfully.

Rose will appear in court on Oct. 28. He faces up to 40 years in prison for each count of second-degree murder. Juan Hernandez’s wife told the Post she hopes he will stay behind bars this time.

“I know that if he’s in prison, my son and husband, they won’t come back,” Laura Hernandez said. “But this man can’t get out. He can’t get out.”

  21. The Bee: “PORTLAND, OR — President Biden has recently announced that he will be canceling $10,000 in student loan debt for all borrowers who cannot pay for loans they were forced into against their will. Local man Anthony Harb has agreed to recount his gut-wrenching and harrowing story of how he was coerced at gunpoint below:

“Look I didn’t have a choice in the matter, okay? Who wants to pay $100,000 to go out of state and have complete freedom at last from my parents to go party every night and get a degree in Mechanical Engineering?” said Anthony Harb. “But they made me do it! Federal agents literally burst down my door and held a loaded gun to my head until I signed and took out a $100,000 loan from them. It was terrible. It was the worst day of my life!”

“I tried to be strong. I tried to say no, but the government agents showed me a video of my parents and sister tied up and begging for their lives. If I didn’t sign my name to that $100,000 dollar loan none of them would be here today,” Anthony continued, holding back tears. “I was just a kid! What was I supposed to do when confronted by such predatory government loans?”

“But now thanks to the most gracious $10k debt cancellation from Joe Biden (may he live forever) I can finally have the freedom to pay my bills and go about my life while only making a meager $124,999 engineering salary!” Anthony added. “And I never even had to cancel my Saturday brunch, or work extra shifts to do it!”

At publishing time, Anthony Harb told us yet another nightmare horror story about how just yesterday the same government agents broke in again and made him sign an $800,000 mortgage and max out his $50,000 credit card at Best Buy. Mr Harb says he is literally begging Joe Biden in all his mercy to once again come in and save him with other people’s money.

  22. CUPERTINO, CA — Apple has added an exciting new reality show to its streaming lineup which will follow the Clintons around as they murder anyone who might have dirt on them.

“Get in the car! We’re going suiciding!” yelled Hillary Clinton to her daughter as the cameras began rolling. “You got the snacks, right? Faking a hanging always makes me hungry. Bodies are so heavy!”

Each show will follow the Clinton ladies as they track down and kill someone who could possibly turn on them. “Watching them assassinate people is like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel,” said cameraman Jan Blagojevich. “Absolute masters. Every week, you get to see a new way that the Clintons plant evidence to frame the death as a suicide, or perhaps a lover’s quarrel. It’s simply breathtaking.”

Producers hatched the idea after seeing the ratings Clinton scored with her hanging of Jeffrey Epstein. “If you look at the demographic breakdown, Epstein’s murder was nothing less than a crossover smash,” said Apple showrunner Cory Gates. “This show has true crime, politics, everything. The best part is at the end of each episode when you get to see how the news reported on the apparent ‘suicide’. Oh hang on, I’m getting a call! Looks like the Clintons are on the move again.”

At publishing time, reporters on the ground say that show producer Cory Gates and cameraman Jan Blagojevich sadly died when their car exploded from a faulty spark plug.

    1. NEW YORK, NY — New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed her solidarity with Biden’s move to use poor taxpayers’ money to pay off wealthier Americans’ student loan debt, donning a “Tax The Poor” dress and posing for pictures.

“Tax the poor! Tax the poor!” chanted Ocasio-Cortez with her adoring fans. “There are like, so many working-class people out there living these amazing debt-free lives. It is just so not fair that someone who chose to go to a private school and do women’s studies can’t also live without the burden of loan payments! I will not stop fighting until every garbage collector and mailman has paid their part so we too can live debt free!” shouted Ocasio-Cortez, who then pantomimed the handcuffs of debt that shackle rich college graduates.

While independent analysis of Biden’s move has assessed it as a transfer of debt from affluent college graduates to poorer high-school graduates, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has steadfastly maintained the importance of everything being free. “People seem to be saying that this is the reverse of Robin Hood, ‘stealing from the poor to give to the rich.’ But Robin Hood is like, a criminal. Who cares what a cartoon fox in a green hat says? Foxes all probably want to date me anyway!”

At publishing time, AOC applauded as a minimum-wage McDonald’s worker was black-bagged and hauled into the back of an IRS van for failing to pay their $10,000 “special bonus 2022 tax.”

    2. NORTH POLE — Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared live via satellite from the North Pole on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360° to push back at the recent assertion by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that he was an elf. He also expressed concern about DeSantis possibly being the abominable snowman.

“I resent DeSantis’s implication that I am an elf!” shouted America’s doctor while wearing tiny shoes and a pointy cap at his North Pole home. “And I find it doubly offensive that he said someone should toss me across the Potomac, a river 100 feet to 11 miles wide. Even the greatest dwarf toss on record is only 11 feet 5 inches! You have to follow the science!”

“DeSantis is nothing more than a bully. Maybe he thinks everyone around him is small because he’s a giant who eats reindeer!” the grumpy elf shot back.

According to sources, Fauci ended the televised interview early because of a prior obligation to appear before an elf council to discuss his authorization of gain-of-function funding to Chinese elves.

Dr. Fauci has also asked that people stop calling him a dentist. “I am not a failed doctor,” he said. “No, really!”

    3. SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Insider trading expert and husband of the Speaker of the House Paul Pelosi has pleaded guilty to a DUI charge and has been sentenced to live with Nancy Pelosi again after 5 days in prison.

“You recklessly put innocent lives in danger, and I have no choice but to make an example of you,” said the judge at the sentencing. “In five days’ time, you will fly out to Washington, D.C., and move in with your wife Nancy. May God have mercy on your soul.”

Paul Pelosi will be forced to wear an ankle monitor which will prevent him from leaving the premises. At publishing time, his legal team was appealing the sentence.

Biden Unable To Coherently Justify Student Debt Forgiveness

    Excerpt:

Critics have described the president’s justification for the program as “non-sensical” and alleged the measure is solely for votes. Meanwhile, new data shows more than 200 high ranking Biden officials are set to directly benefit from the plan.
