Thankfully, we were able to get the military to agree to pay for a home birth. I doubt if that would happen today. Family Birth Associates helped us organize everything. They introduced us to our midwife, who insisted I participate in Lamaze classes, which teach you how to breathe during each stage of labor, among other things. If the Father is available, they are also required to take the classes to learn the proper way to support the Mother. She gave me the name and number of an RN who conducted the classes and would help supervise the birth.

We attended the class every week and she routinely took blood tests – when I was low on iron, she directed me to eat liver and raisins, and I began taking FemIron. I made it to the last critical class before going into labor.

We had everything arranged – our closest friends, Rick and Linda, agreed to come and help direct things and support us. We brought in a hospital bed and set up speakers to play our favorite music. IIRC, it was “Jonathan Seagull.”

My midwife kept calling me to say, “Listen, I’ve got someone who is trying to get their Midwife license and they need to witness a live birth. Can they come for the birth?” Hospitals prevented anyone but the husband from being present and they do NOT like midwives! One of them was a Jesuit priest! We had ten people coming, in addition to the midwife and the RN.

The Wednesday following the last critical class, I woke up early in the morning to find my water had broken. We immediately called the RN and midwife, as well as the Jesuit priest, who had requested a call. As the day went on, my labor would start and stop, start and stop. We tried everything – herbal teas, an enema, a warm bath, jogging, running up and down the stairs. At one point, she even told us “You know, an orgasm wouldn’t hurt! No penetration, tho!” and sent us upstairs.

Nope – that didn’t work either. About 7 pm, they were listening to her heartbeat through a contraction and heard it dip, which indicated the cord was around her neck – my labor would probably never progress. During a contraction, pressure was exerted on the umbilical cord. This caused her body to secrete adrenalin, which then signalled MY body to stop the contractions. She left it up to us on the decision to go to the hospital or not.

We conferred and decided it was not worth endangering our baby’s life, but we did NOT want to go to WR. The hospital at Andrews Air Force Base was the only military hospital in the area that had a Midwifery Program, and my midwife happened to know the female Colonel Director……and she just so happened to be on duty that night.

She called and arranged it for us and off we went to Andrews. At that time, they had begun using internal monitors – they literally screw it into the babie’s scalp!!!! Since my water had already broken, they wanted to do that and we said absolutely NOT!!!! They also wanted to shave me – nope, not happening! The word went out all through the hospital that this crazy couple had tried to have their baby at home. Horrors!!! “It’s not done!”

They fitted me with an external monitor across my belly but Heather kept moving so they had a hard time tracking her heartbeat. They tried again to talk me into an internal monitor so the attendant didn’t have to stay at my bedside every minute. My reply? “Tough shit – just do your damned job!!!”

They hit me up with a very high dose of pitocin, a synthetic oxytocin, which triggers the contractions. Due to that high dose, when Heather started coming, it was FAST. They wanted to cut me so I didn’t rip or tear – I said no but my hubby freaked and I was too tired to fight it. He said they used what looked like a tree lopper! That was NOT a pleasant sound, let me tell you! It was a very loud “POP!” I had no pain killers whatsoever throughout and did not even feel it when they cut me. The cord was, indeed, wrapped around her neck so as soon as her head came through, they cut the cord.

Heather was finally born around 1:30 in the morning and, altho we both ran a low fever for a time, all was well. She was tiny – 5 lbs 6 oz – but otherwise healthy. She was 5 lbs 1 oz when we took her home and was the ONLY baby in the nursery who was not jaundiced (caused by bilirubens).

I was in the hospital until Friday; when I left, I wore my regular jeans – that extra 30 lbs? Gone! The following Sunday, we took her with us to the Lamaze class and everyone oohed and aahed. Five days old:

I bathed her myself for the most part until one day my hubby wanted to do it. The idiot took a soaked washcloth and plopped in on the top of her head – of course, the water poured down her face and scared her to death! I refrained from hitting him, miraculously! I began a campaign to rid her of that fear by bringing her into the bath tub with me. Peaceful and unfraid, enjoying the sensation of floating! I succeeded – she was never scared of water again!!!

      1. I was mortified in the hospital when interns or whatever walked in my room to “check out my progress”. I didn’t know these guys…thinking they could come in and look at my private parts!!!

          1. she had been in a lot of pain when the last she spoke of it–her back, her asthma. now hopefully she is at peace.
            but i can guarantee if the good Lord asks for volunteers to keep His people safe on earth, she’ll be here! she was a warrior!

        1. I’m not in any particular discomfort . . . still waiting on the analysis of my last set of CT scans so an informed prognosis can be made on the aortic dissection.

The Court should “eliminate it from our jurisprudence at the earliest opportunity.” He finds “[a]t least three dangers favor jettisoning the doctrine entirely”—privileging judicial powers over the consent of the governed; preferring some rights over others and inventing doctrines favoring some policies over others; and even perverting the purposes of government.

    In other words, the cult (my term) of substantive due process attacks liberty and replaces it with despotism.”

  13. Good morning y’all! Sounds like quite the adventure Filly! Sad to hear about Wheatie. We ended up packing all weekend, so I never cut the grass…it’s not growing much anyway with how hot and dry it’s been. Got the other lot sold and settled Friday. The packing is going quicker than I thought. Should be ready to go by August.

    With regard to the documentary, the letter referenced “individuals (referred to as mules) who repeatedly would visit ballot dropboxes and deposit multiple ballots, allegedly for payment, in states with controversial elections in 2020, such as Georgia and Pennsylvania.”

    The GOP legislators noted that in the documentary “Michigan was named as a state that had such mules influence the 2020 Presidential Election.”

  30. you know i always thought that intelligence was measured by the ability to see new information and a differing viewpoint as a possible opportunity to change my mind…in other words, an open mind is an intelligent mind. apparently these 2 senators do not feel that way. No one should be so obstinate that they cannot at least consider new viewpoints before making a decision. if these 2 justices changed their minds, they changed their minds–nothing criminal in that.

    No sooner had the Supreme Court issued its Dobbs opinion then West Virginia’s sometimes-rational-Democrat senator Joe Manchin and senior Maine-Squish-Republican, senator Susan Collins, came out expressing their combined horror and indignation over the decision. They both went to say they were aghast that both Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch had apparently misrepresented to them, both in private meetings and during their hearings, that they would respect established precedent. The senators felt “betrayed” by the pair. Manchin was quoted as saying, “I trusted Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed Roe v. Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans.” Collins in her statement said, “This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon.” What each of these senator’s statement reveals, without saying it out loud, was they thought they had a deal. What sort of deal? If you promise not to touch Roe, I will vote for your nomination. In short, the classic quid pro quo. By their comments it was obvious that both senators felt they had been “double-crossed” and they were none too happy about it.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Homeland Security has raised the level of its National Protest Advisory System (NPAS) from “Mostly Peaceful” to “Somewhat Peaceful” in response to swelling crowds outside the Supreme Court Building.

    D.C. Police are on full alert with riot gear to hold back the somewhat peaceful protesters to prevent them from entering the Supreme Court Building with somewhat peaceful intent. The building itself is surrounded by oppressive barricades and the justices have reportedly been issued whistles to report somewhat peaceful touching on their person in the event of a somewhat peacefully bludgeoning.

    “We advise everyone to stay away from the somewhat peaceful protests currently going on outside the Supreme Court Building,” said D.C. Police Chief Frank Turtletaub. “The peaceful fire burns mightily. Several individuals are already somewhat incapacitated.”

    House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke in an effort to quell the protest’s fervor when she said, “[…] the radical supreme court is eviscerating America’s rights and endangering its health and safety […] the harm is endless.” “It’s a slap in the face to women,” she added.

    Curiously, her statements have been unable to prevent somewhat peaceful property damage. At publishing time, the NPAS alert level was upgraded again from “somewhat peaceful” to “kind of peaceful.” The mayor is currently considering evacuation orders.”

    “US – Across the country, a “mysterious leap” was reportedly felt in the wombs of millions of women which experts say may be linked to the recent SCOTUS decision which overturned Roe v. Wade, rendering abortion no longer a protected federal procedure.

    The feeling of unbridled excitement emanating from the womb was said to have occurred simultaneously across the country as a million unborn children seemed to cry out all at once in joy.

    “Weird,” said Dr. Menantee, the nation’s leading obstetrician. “A fetus seemingly expressing joy shouldn’t be possible since we all know they are nothing more than parasitic cell clumps that make women fat. These reports seem to suggest some sort of sentience…”

    Dr. Menantee broke off his sentence and stared thoughtfully at the heavens for a moment as if contemplating the meaning of life and his role in the grand scheme of things.

    “Nah, that couldn’t be it,” he laughed nervously.

    At publishing time, sources had confirmed the leaps of joy weren’t felt in about half the states, most notably California and New York.”

  46. “While taking a dog psychology class, the course instructor mentioned that a great way to test your dogs is to fall down and act like you are wounded. He said that a dog that has a bad temper will typically decide to try and bite his owner. And if the dog is typically good, it will lick the person on the face and act concerned.

    So, with that in mind, I decided to test out my dogs one night to see what would happen.

    I was sitting down in my living room eating pizza and watching TV. At this point, I decided to test the theory. I stood up and clutched my chest and then made a quick shout and dropped to the floor.

    Guess what the dogs did? They completely ignored me, went over to the table and began chowing down on my pizza!”

    Justice Ralph Porzio said that the law was in direct violation of the New York State Constitution. “The New York State Constitution expressly states that citizens meeting the age and residency requirements are entitled to register and vote in elections,” he said.

    “Though voting is a right so many citizens take for granted, the City of New York cannot ‘obviate’ the restrictions imposed by the Constitution,” Porzio continued, going on to say that “the weight of the citizens’ vote will be diluted by municipal voters and candidates and political parties alike will need to reconfigure their campaigns.”

    The bill allowed non-citizens to register in political parties and vote in local elections if they hold green cards or have working visas. The only additional requirement for non-citizens is that they have been residents of New York City for a mere 30 days.
