PANTS: From Banned to Required

Go to a meeting with any male politician today and you’re almost certainly going to be standing in front of a man wearing pants, except perhaps in Bermuda, where the eponymous shorts are the nation’s official dress. But in Imperial Rome, obviously, things were a little different—no man of honor would think of wearing what was considered the garb of a savage barbarian.

When Marcus Tullius Cicero, an eloquent orator and lawyer, was defending the former Gaul governor Fonteius from accusations of extortion, he cited the wearing of pants as a sign of the “innate aggressiveness” of the Gauls—and an extenuating circumstance for his client:

‘Are you then hesitating, O judges, when all these nations have an innate hatred to and wage incessant war with the name of the Roman people? Do you think that, with their military cloaks and their breeches, they come to us in a lowly and submissive spirit, as these do (…)? Nothing is further from the truth.’

Think of it as the “Trouser Defense.”

“Good orators were using rhetoric in a rather sophisticated way—they were picturing foreign tribes in the way that mostly suited their needs, from fierce aggressors to backwards folks, and they were relying on visual imageries to make sure that ‘barbarian otherness’ would stand out,” says Susanne Elm, a historian from the University of California, Berkeley, who studies Rome’s relationship with the tribes to the north, which they collectively referred to as “barbarians.” The breeches were, in this case, a powerful symbol of “otherness.”

Cicero was not alone in relating pants to a primordial, uncivilized life. In 9 A.D. Ovid, by then an acclaimed poet, was exiled by Emperor Augustus, for reasons that remain unclear (but may have had to do with Augustus’s niece). In what is now Tomis, Romania, the poet first encountered barbarians:

‘The people even when they were not dangerous, were odious, clothed in skins and trousers with only their faces visible.’

There were no particular hygienic reasons for the Roman distaste for pants, says Professor Kelly Olson, author of “Masculinity and Dress in Roman Antiquity.” They did not like them, it appears, because of their association with non-Romans.

But opinions change with time, and not long after, the historian and senator Publius Cornelius Tacitus listed pants among a range of “exotic” behaviors of Germanic tribes, whom he praised for having morals unweakened by civilization: river-bathing, ponytails (“wisted tufts resembling horns or plumes”), and pants.

It is not as though every person walking around ancient Rome was wearing a toga—they were more like formal wear. Tunics where the most common garment, sleeveless or short-sleeved for men, and long-sleeved, ankle-length for women. Squeezing one’s legs into stitched fabric was simply not tradition, and not generally demanded by the Mediterranean climate.

However, as the empire expanded, this began to change. Romans and tribes from newly annexed northern lands fought side-by-side to protect their borders from still other barbarians, such as the Visigoths. So military trousers used by Germans or Gauls became the outfit of choice for Roman troops—presumably because they’re more practical on a northern battlefield than flappy tunics.

Evidence of this early trouserization of Roman troops can be seen in the spiral bas-relief of Trajan’s Column, the 98-foot-tall, 12-foot-thick marble monument erected in 113 to honor the emperor’s triumph over the Dacians, pants-wearers from what is now Romania and the region around it. In that depiction, generals and other high-rank figures wear tunics or togas, while common soldiers wear leggings.

Like with GPS and the internet, innovations from the military sector slowly spread to civil society. By 397, trousers, in all their odiousness, were becoming so common that brother-emperors Honorius and Arcadius (of the Western and Eastern empires, respectively) issued an official trouser ban. The ban is cited in a code named for their father, Theodosianus, which read:

‘Within the venerable City no person should be allowed to appropriate to himself the use of boots or trousers. But if any man should attempt to contravene this sanction, We command that in accordance with the sentence of the Illustrious Prefect, the offender shall be stripped of all his resources and delivered into perpetual exile.’

“What the ban basically does is that it bans civilians from wearing a military outfit in the capital,” says Elm, “so one could see it as an indirect way to make it easy to distinguish civilians from military men at a time where tension was high.” Four years prior, Emperor Valens had been killed in battle within Roman borders, and a third of the army had been wiped out. So banning trousers could have been a way to make sure that the capital was easier to police, and that fighters were kept out.

The ban could also be read as the desperate attempt of late-period emperors to cling to a sense of Roman identity at a time where the empire had become a melting pot of traditions, after hundreds of years of expansion and cultural appropriation. Long hair and flashy jewels soon joined boots and pants as forbidden fashion.

“Barbarian influence on fashion was something that emperors wanted to control, but then their own bodyguards, which presumably they trusted, were barbarians,” says Elm. “So rather than anti-barbarian, they were mostly anti-barbarian-identity.” Restoring concepts such as “purity” and “identity” is not uncommon in fading empires—authoritarian ways to make rulers feel in control at home in the face of external weakness.

It’s not clear whether the trouser ban had any impact on Roman identity, or was even actually enforced. There is no legal evidence or angry letters. But 13 years after the ban, Visigoth fighters led by King Alaric violently marched into and sacked Rome, an event that most historians consider a critical shove in the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476. The ban was more or less rendered moot.

An 1890 painting by French artist Joseph-Noel Sylvestre depicts the sacking of Rome by the Visigoths. (Public Domain)

Of course, pants won in the end. By a century later, the barbarians had claimed the battle for the sartorial soul of the court of Constantinople, the only Roman court left.

“By the fifth and sixth centuries, suddenly the so-called barbarian custom, sleeved top and trousers, had become the official uniform of the Roman court. If you were close to the emperor, that’s what you would wear.” says Olson. “Scholars have not yet been able to explain how that happened, trousers going from being banned to be legally required clothes for the Roman court.”

    1. The correct response would have been “we accept the Court’s ruling.” In fact, that’s the only legitimate thing the executive branch can say here. Instead the Biden regime is straight up undermining separation of powers. If it had been Trump, he’d have been impeached already. https://t.co/oj2Y0hlFhV

  2. Top of the morning to all! Wow! Talk about a blast from the past! I kept getting this call yesterday afternoon and last night – since I don’t answer unknown numbers, I just clicked end and ignored it. But they kept calling and calling and calling. So this morning at about 6 am I decided to take the bull by the horns and I called it back. Lo’ and behold, it was one of my last remaining cousins from my adopted Aunt’s family! He still lives in Norfolk and will head up to visit when he gets some work done on his truck. I’ll give him a call as well the next time I’m planning on heading to Norfolk. Imagine that! Truly a small world here in NE!!!! He got my phone # from another adopted Aunt who lives in MN.

BTW, the reason for this post about pants? Pat made a comment about men wearing robes back in Roman times, that pants were too uncomfortable for their “junk!” That got me curious…and…voila! Pants in Roman times!!! LOL

  3. i forgot to tell y’all about the awesome experience i had late yesterday afternoon!
my hummers tend to come to the feeders en masse in the early morning and later in the afternoon and i am refilling the feeders a lot!
so I took one of the feeders back out after cleaning it, and decided to stand there holding it and see if any would land on it. I stood close to the railing instead of close to the house where the other feeder hangs…didn’t get any takers.
so i moved to the spot under the eave where the feeder normally hangs…OMG within seconds, there were about 20 hummers buzzing around me!
one male was hovering inches from my nose…2 others flying around my head. then a female landed on the feeder and another landed on my hand! (I had them cupping the feeder) i was laughing as i tried to stand still but they were going crazy…
    such fun!
I was out there for about 10 minutes, the hummers flying all around me…defintiely cool!

But the movie did nothing to overturn the 2020 election….

Maricopa County Republican Committee Executive Board To Reject 2020 Presidential Election After Election Audit and “2000 Mules” Documentary Prove Irrefutable Evidence of Fraud

The Gateway Pundit recently reported that the same was done in Texas, where the Texas GOP declared the Joe Biden Regime illegitimate.

“The 2000 Mules Documentary irrefutably proves election fraud occurred in Maricopa County during the 2020 Election in the form of ballot trafficking through drop boxes,” states the resolution in Maricopa County.

“2000 Mules” was the latest blow to the stolen 2020 Presidential Election. Massive evidence of illegal ballot trafficking and a coordinated nationwide election fraud ring was presented by True the Vote and Dinesh D’Souza. The film revealed that over 200,000 illegal ballots were trafficked in Arizona.

This is the third. It’s starting to happen.

  5. Entire Article @ BB: “One of the top donors for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) has invested big money in stopping former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens from winning the Republican Senate primary in the Show-Me State. According to Politico, establishment Republicans have joined forces to stop Greitens and will be spending millions of dollars on advertising. The outlet reported:

The group, called Show Me Values, is set to start running TV advertisements targeting Greitens, beginning Friday. The outfit is set to air more than $1-million worth of commercials through the end of June, and a person involved with the organization said it planned to remain involved in the race up until the Aug. 2 primary. Show Me Values is currently being funded by top Missouri Republican donors, including Rex Sinquefield and his wife, Jeanne. As Greitens pointed out on Thursday, Sinquefield has consistently supported Mitch McConnell as well as the super PAC Senate Leadership Fund.”

Greitens campaign manager Dylan Johnson knocked the super PAC for being “scared” of an America First champion. “These swamp creatures and grifters know their time at the trough is finished,” Johnson said. “That’s why they’re scared of America First champion Governor Greitens.”

Speaking with Breitbart News this past May, Greitens said that establishment Republicans fear that the base has drifted toward the “America First” movement. What is happening is that the whole movement, the whole Republican Party is moving towards the America First movement,” Greitens said. “That’s where the people of Missouri are at. That’s where I’m at.” Greitens further described himself as an “America first candidate running against RINOs who are supporting Mitch McConnell.”

A recent Real Clear Politics poll for the Missouri Republican primary Senate race showed that Greitens, who resigned from the governorship in 2018 over sexual assault allegations, has 24.8 percent of support from likely voters while Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt trails with 21.3 percent.”

  7. EXCERPT (video @ link): “Are BlackRock and a Mysterious Figure Named “Kimberly Lang” Running the U.S. Government? When someone is meeting with leaders in and out of our nation almost every day at the White House and nobody knows who she is, there’s a reason to be concerned. Who is Kimberly Lang?

It’s no secret that BlackRock is deeply embedded with the New World Order. Okay, so maybe it’s a secret to “normies” but my audience is very well aware that the largest investment management firm in America is in bed with those trying to bring about The Great Reset. Recent revelations make me question whether or not they’re just the bankers of the globalist elites. Could they be the ones who are actually pulling all the strings?

On the latest episode of The JD Rucker Show, I dove into this question based on an article from The Epoch Times below. Not only does it reveal the various secret meetings that have taken place at the White House, meetings that are only known because of public White House visitor logs, but it also brings to light a mysterious figure that up until now I nor most others have ever heard about.

“Kimberly Lang” is a high-level person in the White House and apparently nobody in the outside world has any idea who she is. We know she’s employed by our government as a GS-13, but she apparently doesn’t have a public title or list of responsibilities. Nevertheless, she’s meeting with BlackRock executives, the Director of the CIA, and high-ranking officials from across the globe. She has had 308 known meetings since the beginning of the Biden regime, yet somehow she has remained a ghost.

Watch or listen to today’s episode. Here’s the article that I referenced by Justin Haskins and Jack McPherrin from our premium content partners at The Epoch Times:”

  8. Sounds like a brilliant idea to me!!!! Let’s go!!!

EXCERPT: “The need for a bipartisan solution to the senility crisis in the Senate is obvious. It is high time we came together, reached across the aisle, and passed common sense senile senator control. The senility crisis in the Senate will only get worse with time. In the 117th Congress, the average age of new incoming senators was already 58 years old. At present there are seven members of the Senate in their 80s and just one, Jon Ossoff of Georgia, in his 30s.

The Senate is currently considering a bill that would encourage states to pass laws that would allow judges to seize firearms from allegedly “dangerous individuals” without a trial. A red flag law for senile senators would work on the same principle.

New York’s red flag law is a useful model. Under that legislation, a family member, school principal, district attorney, or police officer can petition a county judge to seize the firearms of an individual after just one hearing.

A senility control law for senators would work the same way, but with the allowance that any constituent of that senator’s state would be able to file a petition with any county judge of their state to suspend the right of that senator to vote on legislation. Like New York’s red flag law, this proposed legislation wouldn’t require a jury trial—but simply an administrative hearing to put an Extreme Senility Protection Order in place.”

  11. Entire Article (Tweets came from this): “Roe v Wade has been overturned, sending the decision on laws regarding abortion back to the states where it belongs. According to RSBN:

‘On Friday morning, the Supreme Court issued its long-awaited ruling on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, effectively overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. In a 6-3 ruling, the court ruled in favor of returning the issue of abortion to the states to decide.

The majority opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, held “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.”

Justices Kagan, Sotomayor, and Breyer dissented.’

Chief Justice John Roberts, who did not sign off on the original draft leaked to the press, joined the five conservatives on the bench. But his concurrence reads more like a dissent, admonishing the court for a lack of judicial restraint in not rendering a more narrow opinion that wouldn’t have overruled Roe and Casey.

Riots will now start. Keep a close eye on local churches and pregnancy centers. We’re in for a bumpy weekend from domestic terrorists that will almost certainly rival the George Floyd riots of 2020.”

  12. Entire Article @ The Blaze: “A school in San Francisco will return to merit-based admissions after angry parents recalled left-wing school board members. One of the contentious issues that led to the recall was the implementation of an admissions lottery at Lowell High School in order to rectify historical inequities and increase diversity in the school’s student body.

On Wednesday, the San Francisco Unified School District’s Board of Education voted 4 to 3 to end the lottery system and return to a merit-based admissions policy for the fall of 2023. All three of the new board members voted for the return of the merit system.

The recall of three left-wing school board members in February by an overwhelming vote made national headlines as yet another example of Democrats losing support across the country. One recalled school board member blamed “white supremacy” for her dismissal despite the racially diverse makeup of the San Francisco electorate. Board of Supervisors president Shamann Walton similarly blamed former President Donald Trump and the racism he allegedly inspired among San Franciscans.

Activists protested in front of the San Francisco Unified School District office ahead of the vote in support of the merit based system. “The real issue is that the SFUSD has been failing to prepare an ethnically diverse range of students for academic success for decades,” said Kit Lam, a district parent and activist. “Targeting Lowell is not the solution and only covers up other education failures.”

The decision to return to merit-based admissions might be challenged by opponents in court based on a California law that prohibits admissions that are based on school performance.

Later in June, voters in San Francisco also chose to recall the city’s district attorney after he instituted left-wing policies that focused less on law enforcement and crime skyrocketed in the left-leaning city.

    Here’s more about the recall:”

  15. Yet another sleight of hand….damn, they’re good at this crap!!!!

Entire Article: “WASHINGTON, D.C. – Some critics are claiming that the recently-reintroduced in Congress “Civics Secures Democracy Act” (CSDA) – which would distribute $6 billion in grant money to states over a six year period to support educational programs in civics and history – would, if passed, allow the Biden Administration to strong-arm applicants to incorporate the controversial Critical Race Theory (CRT) teachings into school curriculums.

CRT essentially teaches that institutions in the United States are laced with racism embedded in laws, regulations, rules, and procedures that are designed to keep white people in power at the expense of minorities. Supporters argue that CRT promotes culturally-relevant teaching practices changes how the history of slavery is taught, whereas critics claim the subject breeds unneeded social division and racial tension.

Most likely the Biden Admin will designate certain qualifications into CSDA – if it is passed – that would require applicants to adhere to certain parameters in order to receive grant money; it is that aspect of the bill that some anticipating it being used as a “back door” to allow CRT into schools, although there is no direct language in it saying as such.

Compared to a previous version of CSDA, any language referencing CRT – such as “action civics” – has been scrubbed, but the bill does refer to establishing civics programs directed toward “traditionally underserved students.”
However, while the U.S. Department of Education under the Biden Administration has displayed a need to incorporate CRT teachings into public schools, both federal law and the language within the CSDA bill itself bar the Biden Admin from formally imposing a curriculum on states. But some conservatives are nonetheless claiming that the use of clandestine channels – including “strings” being attached to grants and purported left-leaning staff of state education departments – could lead the way for CRT to be introduced to education on a national level.

The CSDA bill currently enjoys support from both sides of the political aisle, with Republican Senators Bill Cassidy (LA) and James Inhofe (OK) as co-sponsors. With members of the GOP – who have typically opposed CRT curriculum – this deeply involved in the legislation, it seems the ultimate impact of CSDA, provided it passed both Congress and the Senate, remains to be seen.

A vote for CSDA is expected to take place this summer, just before the August recess.”

Entire Article: “With Democratic strongholds like Chicago having witnessed a massive surge in crime and violence over the last year, not only have the Democrats seen their approval numbers drop, but apparently, they don’t even want to discuss the issue. That is exactly what happened when Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was asked about the influx in criminal activity.

Taking questions from the press, Lightfoot, as can be seen in the video below, appeared to completely shut down when William Kelly confronted her with the truth. And to make it worse, Kelly, who is known for getting under Lightfoot’s skin, didn’t offer his opinion on the Mayor but people who call Chicago home. He asked, “I’ve been asked by real Chicagoans to ask you, are you lying or are you incompetent?”

After claiming the statement was nothing more than a lie and Kelly supposedly being hit with the microphone, he rephrased his question to, “Mayor Lightfoot, every time I asked you about crime in Chicago, you say crime is down. Real Chicagoans know that that’s not true. The crime is up. Violence, sexual assault. It’s on the news every day. Violent carjackings every day. Hit and Run. 100 Day hit and run of Chicagoans. The obvious question that I’ve been asked by real Chicagoans to ask you is – are you lying, or are you incompetent?

Again, Lightfoot refused to acknowledge that many residents weren’t happy with her leadership, but she did answer that the information being presented was wrong. “Okay, because you want to give a speech and pontificate. But you don’t actually want to listen to the facts. And the facts are, while nobody’s taking a victory lap, while we have a lot more work to do – the fact of the matter is carjackings are down, shootings are down, and homicides are down.”

“Word reached my ears in the last few weeks that a group of people who are technically still alive but long dead in the world of conservative media can be heard moaning about me again. It’s the Attack of the Zombie Never Trumpers! Many of them crawled out of their graves recently to claim that my piece on the suspicious Georgia primary elections was crazy! A half-baked conspiracy theory — they said! Pure insanity — they whined!

Of course, obvious election fraud in Georgia was uncovered the very next day. And then more election fraud took place openly in Fulton County a few days later. In fact, DeKalb County and Fulton County have both had their elections results overturned long after the primaries were over!

Timing is just not a thing for the zombie Never Trumpers. The triple-chinned Erick Erickson was the first to set aside his failed theology studies — along with his personal war against carbs — to attack me in his Substack blog:

‘Emerald Robinson is the Albert Einstein of political analysts and reporters, if Albert Einstein had been an insane mentally disabled mute with one eye and a lobotomy. Donald Trump is citing her as proof Georgia’s election was stolen. Brian Kemp, you see, got over 74% of the vote.’

The problem for Erickson is that he can read website traffic numbers like everybody else — and nobody cares about his opinions anymore. He got tossed from Red State after he got too big for his britches and tried to exile Donald Trump from the GOP for insulting Megyn Kelly of all things. (Apparently, President Trump forgave Ericksen in 2019 but Ericksen’s audience never did.) While Ericksen is technically still alive, he’s actually dead in media. So, yes, I am the Albert Einstein of political analysts and reporters compared to Erick Ericksen.

I was surprised to see that Rich Lowry also dismissed my piece on election fraud in Georgia in one of his bloodless articles for Politico — but that’s because not even Rich Lowry still thinks he’s alive and relevant. Have you seen his publicity photos?
    ————————-
In case you’re not familiar with his entire career, Lowry is also the hapless man-boy who almost single-handedly destroyed the prestige of a well known conservative magazine — while losing more than half of its subscribers during the Trump years — before turning over the smoking ruins of that magazine recently to a helium-voiced pipsqueak who voted for Biden. That’s what they’ll etch on his tombstone. Only Bill Buckley knows why he turned over the National Review to an albino teenager in 1997 but that was an incredibly dumb move.

Speaking of walking corpses, Jonah Goldberg took a shot at me too — and he just joined CNN! That’s some kind of world record for the Dunning-Kruger effect, and I do hope that Goldberg donates his brain to science so that researchers can discover the holes eventually. In the meantime, I am sending a copy of “Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments” to Jonah’s house for some light reading in-between those televised Zoom calls with Jeffrey Toobin.

How bad is it for Jonah? Well, even Brian Stelter knows that Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes are totally irrelevant in conservative media now. (Ouch — that’s gotta hurt when Brian Stelter says you’re dead!) If you’re worried about what the COVID pandemic did to your lifestyle in the last two years, relax. It could have been much worse. Just look at what it did to Jonah!
    ————————
Erick Erickson and Rich Lowry and Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes will be jabbering away about the dangers of Donald Trump long after you, and your kids, and your grandkids have gone to meet their Maker. So warn your friends. Warn your neighbors. These foul creatures will haunt the podcasts and op-ed pages and green rooms of America with rotting flesh and glazed eyeballs forever.

At night, you can hear their deathless moaning. Trump. Trump. Truuuuuuuump.”

  19. EXCERPTS: “There’s been a lot of discussion and debate over election fraud in Pennsylvania. But there is an undeniable form of election fraud nobody discusses, and that is the existence of the Republican Party, which runs conservative in the primaries but then governs like Democrats – just like a potential fraudulent voting machine that swaps out a Republican vote for a Democrat one. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Pennsylvania race for U.S. Senate, where on the issues of our time, Mehmet Oz is indistinguishable from Democrat John Fetterman. Moreover, he is unelectable anyway and will lose to Fetterman. Isn’t it time we break the uniparty oligarchy and start recruiting impressive independent candidates in general elections?
    ———————–
It’s nearly impossible to start a third party and consistently get on the ballot in each state, but in most states it’s fairly easy to get on the ballot as an independent. Independent candidates never win because they are usually throwaway campaigns; after all, the most viable contenders will run as Republicans or Democrats. But what if we changed that game? What if we found individuals somewhat well known, with a fresh message and agenda, no pre-existing labels as a partisan, but someone who is currently in the trenches on the issues that matter and would fight the oligarchs of both parties and appeal to the fastest-growing base of voters – the unaffiliated?
    ———————–
This is different from simply “allowing the Democrats to win.” Yes, we won’t always succeed in winning or even recruiting such candidates, but can we at least try. Do we have to throw ourselves at the GOP oligarchs who hate us immediately in every general election, no matter how much they betray us? Can we at least make them sweat and work for our vote?

Again, I know those conservatives who watch Fox News all day will have a hard time seeing the light in cases where the RINO is a shoo-in to defeat the Democrat in a two-person race. But we should at least try a test run to break away from the duopoly in a race like the PA Senate contest, where the fake Republican is almost assured to lose anyway.”
