The REAL Tom Sawyer!

The real Tom Sawyer has been revealed, with new research detailing his life as a hard-drinking and heroic firefighter who once saved 90 people from a steamship fire.

Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain

Known to generations as one of the most beloved characters in American literature, an extensive feature in Smithsonian Magazine details the life of the man who inspired the fictional child and title character of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

Twain and Sawyer first met in San Francisco in 1863, quickly becoming firm friends who seemingly drank in every saloon the city had to offer, according to the article.

Firefighter Tom Sawyer

On a rainy afternoon in June 1863, Mark Twain was nursing a bad hangover inside Ed Stahle’s fashionable Montgomery Street steam rooms, halfway through a two-month visit to San Francisco that would ultimately stretch to three years. At the baths he played penny ante with Stahle, the proprietor, and Tom Sawyer, the recently appointed customs inspector, volunteer fireman, special policeman and bona fide local hero.

Montgomery Street in the 1860’s

In contrast to the lanky Twain, Sawyer, three years older, was stocky and round-faced. Just returned from firefighting duties, he was covered in soot. Twain slumped as he played poker, studying his cards, hefting a bottle of dark beer and chain-smoking cigars, to which he had become addicted during his stint as a pilot for steamboats on the Mississippi River from 1859 until the Civil War disrupted river traffic in April 1861. It was his career on the Mississippi, of course, that led Samuel Clemens to his pen name, “mark twain” being the minimum river depth of two fathoms, or roughly 12 feet, that a steamboat needed under its keel.

Mid-1800’s Steamboat

After Twain’s first usage of the “character” in a book three years later, Sawyer is said to have told a reporter at the time, “He (Twain) walks up to me and puts both hands on my shoulders. ‘Tom,’ he says, ‘I’m going to write a book about a boy and the kind I have in mind was just about the toughest boy in the world. Tom, he was just such a boy as you must have been.'”

Smithsonian magazine details how Sawyer was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he was a torch boy for Columbia Hook and Ladder Company Number 14. In San Francisco, he worked for Broderick 1, the city’s first volunteer fire company.

1850’s Hook & Ladder Company

Sawyer had proved his heroism February 16, 1853, while serving as the fire engineer aboard the steamer Independence. Heading to San Francisco via San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and Acapulco, with 359 passengers aboard, the ship struck a reef off Baja, shuddered like a leaf and caught against jagged rocks.

Sawyer raced below deck and dropped into two feet of water. Through a huge rent, the sea was filling up overheated boilers below the waterline, cooling them rapidly. Chief Engineer Jason Collins and his men were fighting to keep steam up to reach shore. After the coal bunkers flooded, the men began tossing slats from stateroom berths into the furnaces. Sawyer heard Collins cry, “The blowers are useless!”

From Smithsonian Magazine

Loss of the blowers drove the flames out the furnace doors and ignited woodwork in the fire room and around the smokestack. Steam and flames blasted up from the hatch and ventilators. “The scene was perfectly horrible,” Sampson recalled later. “Men, women and children, screeching, crying and drowning.”

Collins and James L. Freeborn, the purser, jumped overboard, lost consciousness and sank. Sawyer, a powerful swimmer, dove into the water, caught both men by their hair and pulled them to the surface. As they clung to his back, he swam for the shore a hundred yards away, a feat of amazing strength and stamina.

Depositing Collins and Freeborn on the beach, Sawyer swam back to the burning steamer. He made a number of round trips, swimming to shore with a passenger or two on his back each time. Finally, a lifeboat was lowered, and women, children and many men, including the ship’s surgeon, who would be needed on land, packed in and were rowed to shore. Two broken lifeboats were repaired and launched. Sawyer returned to the flaming vessel in a long boat, rowing hard despite burned forearms to reach more passengers. He got a group into life preservers, then towed them ashore and went back for more. An hour later, the ship was a perfect sheet of flame.

The Smithsonian article quotes a 1898 newspaper article in which Sawyer told a reporter about the influence he had had on Twain’s most famous novel. “You want to know how I came to figure in his books, do you?” Sawyer asked in the interview, cited by the article. “Well, as I said, we both was fond of telling stories and spinning yarns.”

“Sam (Clemens, Twain’s real name), he was mighty fond of children’s doings and whenever he’d see any little fellers a-fighting on the street, he’d always stop and watch ’em and then he’d come up to the Blue Wing [saloon] and describe the whole doings and then I’d try and beat his yarn by telling him of the antics I used to play when I was a kid and say, ‘I don’t believe there ever was such another little devil ever lived as I was.’

“Sam, he would listen to these pranks of mine with great interest and he’d occasionally take ’em down in his notebook. One day he says to me: ‘I am going to put you between the covers of a book some of these days, Tom.’

‘Go ahead, Sam,’ I said, ‘but don’t disgrace my name.'”

“But [Twain’s] coming out here some day,” Sawyer added, “and I am saving up for him. When he does come there’ll be some fun, for if he gives a lecture I intend coming right in on the platform and have a few old time sallies with him.”

The nonfictional character died in the autumn of 1906, three and a half years before Twain. “Tom Sawyer, Whose Name Inspired Twain, Dies at Great Age,” the newspaper headline announced. The obituary said, “A man whose name is to be found in every worthy library in America died in this city on Friday….So highly did the author appreciate Sawyer that he gave the man’s name to his famous boy character. In that way the man who died Friday is godfather, so to speak, of one of the most enjoyable books ever written.”

  3. EXCERPTS: “Saturday, a “bizarre sexual practices” group held their annual recruiting and grooming look-at-me celebration event in the city part in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. A competing event by “Guns d’Alene” was dedicated to protecting children and the Second Amendment. That combo gave the heebie-jeebies, or perhaps the collywobbles, to some in the gay pride celebration.

Police were present in force and, as I posted in Coeur d’Alene Police Threaten Preachers With Arrest to Protect Gay Pride Event in City Park, fairly indiscriminate about violating the First Amendment without the benefit of the famous COVID Exception to the Constitution.

The reason for some of the apprehension became clear. Several sources have reported that Antifa was on the scene, and some of their goons were detained.

More interesting was the arrival of those khaki-clad and bemasked defenders of America, the Patriot Front.

We’ve encountered this group of yahoos in the past. They show up at events where violence seems possible and try to be a catalyst for events without doing anything. For instance, in this video, notice the protection the police provide to this group.

They tried to muscle their way into the annual March for Life and were told to butt out. The interesting thing about them is the way they move in close coordination with the police, that they load people into U-Haul vans in plain sight of the cops (you can’t carry passengers in the back of a van), and that the police keep media far enough away that the registration numbers on the vans can’t be seen. In Chicago, the police let them load into private vehicles with their license plates taped over.”

  5. EXCERPT: “A unanimous panel from the District of Columbia Court of Appeals has dismissed a school’s attack on the speech rights of a pro-life sidewalk counselor, Larry Cirignano. According to a report from Liberty Counsel, the ruling from the appeals court in Washington dismissed the claims that has been launched by Two Rivers Public Charter School.

The organization sued Cirignano “after he peacefully stood on a sidewalk one time near a Planned Parenthood abortion facility situated in between an elementary and middle school in the District of Columbia,” Liberty Counsel explained. He responded with an anti-SLAPP suit against the school.

“Today, the court ruled in favor of Cirignano and dismissed the case brought against him. Liberty Counsel will now return to court to assess attorney’s fees and costs against Two Rivers Public Charter School for its unlawful lawsuit intended solely to thwart the First Amendment right to free speech,” the organization reported.

The Planned Parenthood abortion business shares an alley with the school, and actually is located between two buildings of Two Rivers, Liberty Counsel explained. The lawsuit claimed in one allegation that on November 23, 2015, Cirignano appeared on a public sidewalk holding a sign about abortion. The school filed the lawsuit “even though he never trespassed on school property or otherwise broke any laws,” Liberty Counsel said.”

The 3-0 ruling said Two Rivers “has no standing” to sue. “Two Rivers Public Charter School lacked third-party standing to assert a claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress (‘IIED’), and its other claims cannot succeed on their own,” the court said.

It added, “We therefore hold that the trial court erred in holding that Two Rivers had demonstrated it was likely to succeed on the merits of its private nuisance and conspiracy to create a private nuisance claims in order to overcome the Anti-SLAPP special motion to dismiss.”

“This victory for free speech has taken several years to accomplish but its importance will affect generations,” explained Liberty Counsel chief Mat Staver. “A victory for free speech is a victory for everyone. And a victory to bring awareness about an abortion facility situated near a public school is clearly in the public interest. It was a costly decision for Two Rivers Public Charter School to avoid the First Amendment. Free speech cannot be brushed aside by intimidation or litigation tactics.”

    FTA

What possible reason could there be for doing this [targeting Justice Barrett’s family] except to hope that radical mobs descend on this school and this church? And what possible reason could there be for that other than to coerce, terrorize, and intimidate a justice of the highest court in the land regarding her expected decision on a case before that court?

Where is Merrick Parents Are Domestic Terrorists Garland on this? Right. Nowhere. Parents waiting their turn and then speaking out against public school policy at public-are-welcome school board meetings are the real threat, not these actual lawbreakers whose violations are actually under his jurisdiction.

Here’s the thing, you can bet your last dollar that if the pro-life right were doing the same thing to leftist and left-leaning SCOTUS justices over their opposition to overturning Roe, the full power and fury of the law and federal government would drop on them like Thor’s hammer.

They’d rot in jail, every Republican politician from their town dog-catcher to their House rep and senator would be blamed. There would be shrieks of threats to democracy, insurrection, and racism/sexism/insert whatever ism. There would be bills voted on and passed with lightning speed to abridge the Constitutional rights of anti-infanticide proponents, the FBI would be sent out to look for still-boxed Lego sets, and the entire sprawling DHS would fan out sniffing under every rock looking for anyone who doesn’t support abortion until the moment of birth.

But it’s the radical left breaking federal law and endangering the lives of SCOTUS justices, their children, and their church members, so it’s just some people doing some things because they are “passionate” about a just cause.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Police stopped a U-haul in downtown Coeur d’Alene on Saturday afternoon and arrested 31 people who were found inside. Police said they believe the people arrested have ties to a white nationalist hate group.

“They came to riot downtown,” Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White said at a news conference.

Police were alerted to the group when a concerned person called police around 1:38 p.m. That person reported seeing the group loading into a U-haul that was parked at the Springhill Suites. The group had masks and shields and police said the caller told them it “looked like a little army.”

Police spotted the U-haul about 10 minutes later and stopped it on Northwest Boulevard near the skate park and Paul Bunyan, not far from the area where a Coeur d’Alene Pride event was taking place. Police had stepped up their presence in the area during the event.

Police and deputies surrounded the truck and when they opened it up they found dozens of men in the back, all wearing the same clothes, including khakis, with navy blue shirts, beige hats, and a white cloth covering their faces.

Based on evidence collected at the scene and documents police found in the U-haul, Chief White said that they believe the group was planning to riot in several areas of downtown Coeur d’Alene, not just the park.

“It appears they did not come here to engage in peaceful events,” Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris told our partner the Coeur d’Alene Press.

Chief White said all 31 people were arrested on charges of conspiracy to riot. Those arrested came from at least 11 states, including Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Illinois, Wyoming, Virginia, and Arkansas.

The men are being booked into the Kootenai County Jail. They are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Before it was towed away, the back of the U-haul was filled with evidence bags from police. Still visible were what appeared to be a homemade riot shield and some protective equipment. Police said they also found at least one smoke grenade.

Police said it will take several days for them to book all the evidence.

  11. EXCERPT: “Studies suggest a link between an incurable and fatal prion disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) and COVID-19 vaccines.

Researchers believe the prion region from the original Wuhan COVID-19 variant’s spike protein was incorporated into mRNA vaccines and adenovirus vector vaccines — given to hundreds of millions of humans — and that it can cause a new type of rapidly progressing sporadic CJD.

According to Mayo Clinic, CJD is a degenerative brain disorder that leads to dementia and, ultimately, death. Although the Omicron variant does not have a prion region on its spike protein, current COVID-19 vaccines still use the genetic material — including the prion region — of the parent Wuhan strain.

A French pre-print paper published in May on CJD and COVID-19 vaccination identified a new form of sporadic CJD that occurred within days of receiving a first or second dose of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. Researchers analyzed 26 cases of CJD and found the first symptoms appeared on average 11.38 days after injection with a COVID-19 vaccine. Of the 26 cases, 20 had died by the time the study was published and six were still alive.

“The 20 deaths occurred only 4.76 months after the injection. Among them, 8 of them lead to a sudden death (2.5 months),” researchers wrote.”

  12. EXCERPT: “The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, Galveston Division, also names the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and Robert Califf, acting FDA commissioner.

    According to the complaint:

“The FDA generally cannot ban particular uses of human drugs once they are otherwise approved and admitted to the market, even if such use differs from the labeling — commonly referred to as ‘off-label’ use.

“The FDA also can not advise whether a patient should take an approved drug for a particular purpose. Those decisions fall within the scope of the doctor-patient relationship.

“Attempts by the FDA to influence or intervene in the doctor-patient relationship amount to interference with the practice of medicine, the regulation of which is — and always has been — reserved to states.”

The plaintiffs said their lawsuit isn’t about whether ivermectin is an effective treatment for COVID-19. It’s about who determines the appropriate treatment for each unique patient and whether the FDA can interfere with that process. In their complaint, they site an FDA publication, “Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19,” and tweets from the FDA — including one implying that ivermectin is intended only for animals — among examples of the FDA discouraging the use of ivermectin.”

The plaintiffs also argued if the FDA is allowed to interfere with the practice of medicine now, using the pandemic as a cover, “this interference will metastasize to other circumstances, destroying the carefully constructed statutory wall between federal and state regulatory powers, and between the FDA and the professional judgment of health professionals.”

“This lawsuit, brought by three eminently qualified physicians, is a welcome development,” said Mary Holland, Children’s Health Defense president and general counsel.”

EXCERPT: “(Natural News) In 2016, U.S. diplomats stationed in Havana, Cuba complained about headaches, nausea, hearing loss and balance issues. Following an investigation, it was determined that they had been on the receiving end of an attack using directed-energy weapons that could cause traumatic brain injuries and possible damages to the central nervous system.

About three dozen people were affected by the attack, and their illness had since been called the Havana Syndrome. In 2021, the Havana Act became a law. It authorizes the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of State and other agencies to provide payments to agency personnel who incur brain injuries from hostilities while on assignment. But human rights activist Mariana Maritato believes the directed-energy weapons are also being used against civilians.

“It’s not a conspiracy theory or anything like that. It’s actually been acknowledged by the U.S. government. But Havana Syndrome is only acknowledged so far in government employees and not in civilians,” Maritato told host Dr. John Diamond during the June 7 episode of “America Unhinged” on Brighteon.TV. “Civilians are also being assaulted with directed-energy weapons.”

A directed-energy weapon is a ranged weapon that damages its target with highly focused energy such as laser, microwaves and particle beams. The technology’s potential applications include weapons that target personnel, missiles, vehicles and optical devices.

“The National Academy of Sciences says that it’s most likely caused by radiofrequency pulse weapons. And also the Director of National Intelligence report also says it’s most likely caused by pulsed radiofrequency weapons. And so it’s been highly acknowledged so far that the cause of Havana Syndrome is radiofrequency pulse weapons. There can be a variety of these kinds of weapons. They can be laser, ultrasound or microwaves,” Maritato said.”

He felt comfortable from day one but, then, he worked in the parts department of a Ford manufacturing plant some years back and everything is menu-driven on the computer. At least he is familiar with all the various parts and pieces. He is off next Wednesday (Tuesday he takes his ex for her chemo treatment) and we are planning for him to bring his chain saw to take out the rest of the trumpet vine roots. And he said he would cut up those tree limbs so I can throw the pieces in the back of my truck! Yeah!!!

  17. EXCERPT: “Public health initiatives in the United States are suffering from a crisis of trust. Recent polls show that only a third of the public trusts insurance and pharmaceutical companies, while just 56 percent trust the government health agencies that are meant to regulate these industries. Another survey during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that only around half of Americans have a “great deal” of trust in the CDC, while a mere third have such trust in the Department of Health and Human Services.

This lack of trust is not merely temporary. Yes, our health agencies and companies have made mistakes and propagated falsehoods in the past two years. But their deep unpopularity is not merely the result of circumstance. Without alternatives, these institutions will always lack accountability, and therefore, trust. America is nothing without our unique history of popular sovereignty. We can no longer give public officials unilateral decision-making power over our public health response without competing voices, checks and balances.

Think back to late 2020. When the mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 were made available to the public free of charge, a national conversation began about “vaccine hesitancy”—the phenomenon of Americans choosing not to be vaccinated even when incentivized and, in some cases, coerced. Most of this conversation focused on the historic abuses against the black community, such as the Tuskegee experiment, that ostensibly engendered hostility to the vaccine program among African Americans.

This anecdote demonstrates how clueless public health authorities are about why they are distrusted. Vaccine hesitancy was not only an issue in the black community. Many who chose to forgo the vaccine made their choice based on the authorities’ very recent dishonesty, not a tragedy from decades ago. It wasn’t complicated. Americans had watched public health experts lie, misdirect, ignore evidence and yield to professional pressure since the beginning of the pandemic. Few wanted to be their guinea pigs.”

Because of the vice grip that bureaucrats like Fauci held over the industry’s research funding and reputation control, these courageous men and women risked—and in some cases, wrecked—their careers by doing so.

Since the Great Barrington Declaration was signed, every single concern and recommendation it listed has been abundantly vindicated. It warned of the mental health crisis and increased deaths from injury and preventable disease that would result from lockdowns. Its claim that COVID-19 was a thousandfold more dangerous to the old and infirm is now common knowledge. Its focused protection approach to nursing homes could have saved countless lives from the callous actions of governors who subsequently came under investigation, like Pennsylvania’s Tom Wolf and New York’s Andrew Cuomo.”

  20. EXCERPT: “Beach Pics Tell a Very Different Story From the One the Globalists Are Selling

After sinking $40 billion from U.S. taxpayers into saving Ukraine from Russia, one would expect to see freedom fighters hunkering down, citizens of Kiev hiding in bomb shelters, and Ukraine’s leaders in their command center contemplating their strategies. But that hasn’t been the case, not for a while, and images emerging from Ukraine’s capital have many on Twitter asking questions.

According to The Daily Mail: ‘Residents of Kyiv were out in their droves on Saturday to make the most of 34 degree temperatures, with hundreds enjoying the sunshine on the city’s central beach – just weeks after Ukraine’s capital came under siege from Russia’s invading armies and rocket strikes levelled buildings and killed civilians. Pictures from the banks of the Dnieper river that courses through Kyiv showed people lounging in the sun, swimming in the water and playing games of volleyball, with the city’s skyline seen across the river.

Earlier this year, the same view of the city would have featured smoke rising above the skyline as Russian shells bombarded Kyiv and Ukrainian defenders fought to keep their would-be conquerors from reaching its centre. Back then, snow covered much of the city. Now, the summer weather has coincided with relative peace after Vladimir Putin’s armies were pushed back from the capital and redeployed in eastern Ukraine.’

It certainly seems very different from the story we’re being told. By no means am I suggesting there isn’t death and destruction brought on by Russia’s invasion, but I’ve long argued that this is a regional conflict between neighbors that does not need our attention, let alone billions of our dollars during an economic crisis.

‘Three men have been arrested in connection to the killing of a teenager outside LeBron James-founded Ohio high school in early June, federal authorities announced Saturday. Ethan Liming, 17, was found beaten to death on June 2 in the parking lot of I Promise School in Akron.

In a press release, the US Marshals Service revealed that the federal entity’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and Akron Police on Saturday morning arrested Deshawn Stafford Jr., 20, Tyler Stafford, 19 and Donovon Jones, 21, at two different residential buildings in Akron.

Liming was brutally beaten to death at around 10:46 p.m. on June 2. Authorities have said the teen died from blunt force trauma to the head after he drove around with his friends and shot a water gun at people. Liming was lying on the ground in the parking lot when police arrived, officials have said. They were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.’

The racial divide in America is driven almost entirely by the race-baiters, corporate media, and the Cultural Marxists among us. They amplify stories when a person of color is hurt or killed and they suppress stories in which the victims are White or Asian-American.”

  22. this is a great article imo detailing the capitol police timeline in regards to requests for national guard troops and the denials of such requests and other details purposely left out of 1/6 circus…
    FTA
Bowser claimed in her Jan. 5 letter that the 2020 incident “caused confusion” and could have escalated into “a national security threat with no way for MPD and federal law enforcement to decipher armed groups.”

“To be clear, the District of Columbia is not requesting other federal law enforcement personnel and discourages any additional deployment without immediate notification to and consultation with MPD, if such plans are underway,” she wrote.

She added that the Metro PD was “well trained and prepared to lead the way,” to handle anything that came the city’s way on Jan. 6.

Unfortunately, Bowser, Stenger, and Irving all got it wrong, and USCP and DC Metro police were overrun at the Capitol, with the National Guard being held in abeyance until well after the violence had gotten out of control, which resulted in a “mad scramble” to get the troops which had previously been offered.

  23. china and india amp up their coal production…while we hamstring our own energy production here…
    FTA
Together, India and China make up one-third of the world’s population, and each is industrializing at a rapid pace. Both nations have previously made lofty commitments to transition to renewable energy in the future. In 2020, China’s President Xi Jinping announced that “China will scale up its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions by adopting more vigorous policies and measures. We aim to have [CO2] emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.”

That statement was made before the full effect of the economic lockdowns, supply chain trouble, and energy shortage were apparent. In April, Premier Li Keqiang confirmed that China’s goal for 2022 was to increase annual coal production by 300 million tons, up 36% from the previous year’s added capacity of 220 million tons.

Hot on China’s heels, India ordered the reopening of 100 coal mines that had been closed to meet climate change commitments. The number is expected to rise to 200 coal mines shortly. The government has removed environmental regulations and asked the industry to aggressively increase its coal production by 40% over the next two years.

The two Asian giants are imminently set to increase production capacity by 700 million tons of coal annually, which is more than the total coal production of the United States. By the end of next year, China and India will mine 5.6 billion tons per year, nine times America’s production.
