  1. Happy Mother’s Day and good morning y’all! Have been away the last couple days due to being sick. Wife and I have both been suffering through a nasty cold with body aches, muscle cramps, and on and off fevers. We are okay now, just a little weak. Vitamims for the win! Hope you guys have a good weekend! I will be seeing my Mom later on today, at a distance so not to get her sick. We postponed our planned meal until next weekend. I will make bbq to celbrate Mom’s day, and my wife and I’s b-days all in one. I was actually born on Mother’s day once upon a time back in the day, ( not the 8th).

Entire article: “Not only did Rich Strike capture the first jewel in the Triple Crown, but he also became the second longest shot to win the Kentucky Derby in its 148-year history.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With favorite Epicenter and Zandon dueling in front, Rich Strike came charging up the rail in the closing strides for a stunning 80-1 upset in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Jockey Sonny Leon guided Rich Strike from far back in the 20-horse field to beat 4-1 favorite Epicenter by three-quarters of a length. Zandon was another three-quarters of a length back in third at Churchill Downs in front of a crowd that included former President Donald Trump.

Rich Strike had the second-biggest upset in the race’s 148-year history. He paid $163.60 to win. Only Donerail in 1913 had a higher payout of $184.90.

Rich Strike wasn’t even in the Derby field until Friday when Ethereal Road was scratched, making room for the chestnut colt trained by Eric Reed. Both Leon, from Venezuela, and Reed were in their first Derby. Leon regularly rides on small circuits, including Ohio.

Leon’s rail ride was reminiscent of jockey Calvin Borel aboard Mine That Bird in 2009. Mine That Bird paid $103.20 to win.

Rich Strike was purchased by owner RED TR-Racing LLC for $30,000 last fall when he was entered in a low-level claiming race by former owner Calumet Farm.

Rich Strike earned $1.86 million for just his second career victory.”

  4. I must comment about the absolutely appalling, abhorrent behavior of the Outrider who “picked up” Rich Strike after the race was over. He was horribly abusive to Rich Strike, beating him in the head and trying to ear him down, when the bad behavior was on the part of HIS horse, NOT Rich Strike! The man deserves to be shot!!!!! Absolutely disgusting! And the announcer was way wrong when he said it was Rich Strike trying to “savage” the pony horse. BULL SHIT!!!! It was the other way around!!! The horse just ran the race of his life and you abuse him like THAT!!??!! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!!

I was talking to Sis about that and she has noticed that the horses are being treated more harshly than we ever did when we were working with racehorses. Even young horses, when it is critical that they be treated properly – it will affect them for the rest of their lives. Constantly jerking, yanking on lead shank and reins. I will guarantee you that horse won because of the treatment and understanding this new trainer gave him. You must EARN their trust!!! Calumet obviously didn’t want to go to the trouble of caring about the HORSE first!!!!

      1. I just got off the phone with Mom – first thing she said was he is a terrible rider and can’t even control his own horse. No way I could work in that world any more. I saw enough of it way back in the ’70’s but it is far worse now. Most of the trainers I was around did NOT abuse their horses like that. And I dearly love Calumet getting their comeuppance!!!!

  5. Speaking about caring about the horse first…..I watched Seabiscuit again yesterday. Now, THAT trainer knew how to treat a horse’s mind, not just his body. That is the crucial element missing these days.

  6. ROFL – this is from the AP so of course they parrot the lie that Rich Strike was “chomping on the pony.” Pure bull shit!!!!

EXCERPT: “A few days ago, Reed sent Dawson a photo of the colt sprawled in his straw-covered stall with his handlers laying on him, all of them napping. Reed typed, “I think our horse is cool and ready to run.”

Dawson responded, “If we can wake him up.”

    Did they ever.

“I feel like the luckiest man alive,” Dawson said, grinning.”

  7. Yeah, he’s a scumbag but he does hit the nail on the head sometimes!

Entire Article: “On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher stated that until the news broke this week of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, he didn’t know that many countries in Europe have abortion laws that are more restrictive than the current laws in the United States or laws that are being proposed in America.

Maher said, “I learned things this week, because this put it on the front page, that are pretty basic things that I did not know about abortion. Like in Europe, the modern countries of Europe, way more restrictive than we are or what they’re even proposing. If you are pro-choice, you would like it a lot less in Germany and Italy and France and Spain and Switzerland. … I learned most people who are pro-life are women, did not know that. Most abortions are from…mothers — people who have a kid. … I thought this was interesting, most abortions now, even when you go to a clinic, are done with the pill. And pills are easy to get in America, we know that. So, for the people who say we’re going back to 1973 — we’re not. That’s just factually inaccurate.”

  8. EXCERPT: “A group of radical pro-abortion activists blocked the entrance to Manhattan’s Basilica of Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral days after a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion leaked that signaled the Court will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Pro-Life Catholics in the community have gathered for Mass and a rosary procession to a Planned Parenthood one block away from the church nearly every month for the past 14 years to protest this nation’s abortion laws. However, the group of Catholics were met by pro-abortion activists who blocked the church doors on Saturday.

The pro-abortion radicals were reportedly singing and chanting, “Thank God for abortion,” as they blocked the church’s entrance.”

  9. EXCERPT: “Former President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, said it is unprecedented and would be “problematic” if celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz were elected to the U.S. Senate and received security clearances.

O’Brien’s comments came during a teletown hall hosted by Carla Sands, one of Oz’s opponents in the Pennsylvania Republican Senate Primary. O’Brien, who served in the Trump administration from 2019 to 2021, called out Oz for his Turkish citizenship, service in the Turkish military, and an endorsement deal with Turkish Airlines, which have increasingly become focal points of Oz’s Senate campaign.

    O’Brien said:

‘And look, one thing I want to make clear, and I know you’ve made this clear as well, Carla this isn’t about Mehmet’s heritage, his Muslim faith, or the fact that his family’s from Turkey. We’re all from somewhere, I guess, except for Elizabeth Warren. We’re all from somewhere else, and Mehmet’s a good man. But we’ve never had a situation like this, at least in modern times that I’m aware of, where we have someone who’s a citizen of another country.’

“It will be problematic, I think, if Mehmet was elected to be on the Intel Committee or the Senate Armed Services Committee, and to have the type of security clearance that you had as the ambassador,” O’Brien added.

O’Brien again said the issue is not with his heritage or faith, just that Oz is a citizen of Turkey, a foreign nation ruled by a hostile leader.

‘But look, I assume he’ll drop his Turkish citizenship if he’s elected and will stop voting in elections if he’s a U.S. senator. And look, I’m sure that you know, we all do things in our lives that we wish we had a do-over, and I’m sure if Mehmet had the opportunity, he wouldn’t have done his Turkish army service or vote recently in the Turkish presidential election, or been a representative for Turkish Airlines if he knew he was going to run for the U.S. Senate one day, so you know, my guess is he probably embarrassed by some of those things. And if he wishes he had to do over, and he could do it over, but you know, like, I think we all know he’s a good man. And, and again, this is not about his heritage or his faith, but it is. It is about the issue of him being a citizen of another country.’

  10. Entire article @ DC: “A Texas woman who purchased a sculpture at Goodwill in 2018 for $34.99 learned that the art piece is actually an ancient Roman bust, San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday.

Laura Young, an antiques dealer, purchased the sculpture at a Goodwill in northwest Austin, the San Antonio Express-News reported. She said that the find looked “special” and that she thought the sculpture “looked Roman,” according to the outlet. Jörg Deterling, a consultant with Sotheby’s fine arts company, examined the piece and determined it was a marble Julio-Claudian-era Roman bust.

The bust is believed to possibly depict Sextus Pompey and dates back to somewhere between the late first century BC to the early first century AD, the outlet reported.

The bust allegedly disappeared from Germany following World War II, with the earliest record of its existence showing it as belonging to King Ludwig I of Bavaria’s art collection via an 1883 inventory, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The king supposedly displayed his art collection, including the Roman bust, in Aschaffenburg in a full-scale model of a house from Pompeii, which he called the “Pompejanum.”

The “Pompejanum” sustained damage during World War II when Allied bombers targeted Aschaffenburg, the outlet reported. It was unclear how the ancient Roman bust wound up in Texas.

Young spent years verifying the bust’s authenticity and notified the German government of the find, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The bust reportedly will remain in Texas until May 2023, when it will be returned to the Bavarian Administration of State-owned Palaces.

The bust went on display at the San Antonio Museum of Art on Wednesday, according to NBC News.”

  13. As far as I’m concerned, US racing should not allow foreign-owned horses to run in US races.

EXCERPT: “As Justify and Audible prepare to go to the post for the Kentucky Derby, the New York Times wrote Friday that questions remain about the identity and operations of China Horse Club, co-owner in both horses.

The organization, which claims about 200 members, has been secretive about the identity of its members and the investment involved out of concern it could generate unwelcome interest from the Chinese government. St. Lucia prime minister Allen Chastanet said he has never met any of its members besides leader Teo Ah Khing.

China Horse Club has climbed the ranks to become one of the top ten owners in the world in just five years. Part of the company’s long-term plan includes a racing facility in China and a resort racino in St. Lucia. Wagering is illegal in China and infrastructure in both countries to support a horse population is seriously lacking.

One thing St. Lucia does boast is a citizenship-by-investment program allowing wealthy investors to acquire passports in exchange for investment in St. Lucia’s economy.”
