One of the fun activities in which I used to participate when I lived in No. Virginia was the Bull Run Country Jamboree. It began in 1982 at Bull Run Park in Manassas, VA and was held for 2 days the first year – in the following years, it became a 1 day show. It was much like an old fashioned carnival, craft show and concert – hairiest legs contests, smoothest legs contests, greased pig contests, with all of the attendant food and beverage trucks – yes, beer was included Yummmm…..funnel cake!!!!  This was HB giving my Mom a talking to that first year.

What was so wonderful about Bull Run was the attitude of the people who attended. The gates to the park usually opened at 6 am – people would line up in their vehicles the night before, and party while they waited. It was open-air lawn seating, except for the campground area, and it was important to get there early to get a good spot. What was so unusual was that you could stake out your spot, spread out your blankets and chairs, and then simply walk away to peruse all the other entertainment. Come back an hour later and NOTHING would be touched!!! Everyone looked out for everyone else!

We attended Bull Run every year until 1988, when we moved to NE for 2 years. Of course, it was during that period that Garth Brooks played there and I missed it!!! If you listen to his song, “The Old Stuff,” you will hear him talk about Bull Run……there was a thunderstorm that knocked out the power!

In 1986, I gathered up a bunch of family – brother, sister, Mom, ex-hubby – and friends and off we all went to Bull Run, setting up our lawn chairs next to our vehicles to sleep until the gates opened – or partied – depending on one’s choice.

Towards the end of the concert, park staff would bring around trash bags and everyone cleaned up their own trash, with not a speck left once everyone was gone.

Most years, we had young children with us and those using intoxicants besides beer or wine generally congregated at the campsites. One of the few times I attended without HB, I went with a group of the young project officers from DHR, most of whom consumed MJ. 3 women, 2 guys. Since we weren’t camping, we would team up to visit the Port-O-Johns. One would go in first, do their thing, hit the bowl and set it on the side of the seat. The next person came in and repeated it, then everyone headed back to our spot.

It was my turn in the John…..I was unaware that outside, the police were trying to evict a drunk who insisted he just HAD to pee first! They bumped my friend from the line and placed the drunk there instead.

I did my thing, put the bowl on the side, against the wall, and opened the door! There stood 2 policemen on either side of the line, thankfully about 10 feet away…..I said, “Oh, excuse me, I left my wallet!” Grabbed that sucker and stuffed it in my pocket, and we walked away. That ended THAT activity for the day!!!!

The festival was moved to a new concert venue outside Haymarket, VA around 2007 or 2008. I attended one time and, frankly, it sucked!!!! No more open seating, no more food and beverage trucks, no more crafts. Never went again!!!! But, ah, the memories!!

  1. I miss the early eighties. I was about 7 in’ 82. My dad used to take us to Nascar races all over the east coast, before it was commercialized. We also took trips to FL for vacation, or went camping in the Blue Ridge Mts. Remember Lurray Ca erns several times! My dad played softball in the beer leagues back then, so I grew up on ball fields with all the other kids. Dad and his buddies would always drink and cookout after games. It was a time in my life when my parents were still together, siblings were still little and life was good. Thanks for sharing the photos. I have tons from back then in a shoe box I got from my dad. Your pics brought it all back for me.

      1. Good morning Pat! It was good at times for sure. My parents fought a lot back then like so many others did in those times. That part wasn’t so good. It was just dad hitting mom, sometimes it was the other way around. I think that was a big reason I never married until 41. Didn’t want to be in a marriage like that. I got lucky though and have a fantastic wife! Parents finally divorced for good in ’87 and I went with dad. Mom took the younger 2. It’s funny ’cause they live in MD now, where I was, and now I am just down the road from my mom…walking distance.

        1. My parents were never physical like that when my mom was mad at my dad, she turned the hose on him…and as we got older, we realized that was her weapon of choice. She had squirt guns for use on us kids…LOL…but as we got big enough, sure enough, the hose it was!
          I have my own now safely ensconced in the gadget drawer…LOL

    2. Morning, CM! I’m glad you enjoyed it – ah, yes – fun memories! Tons and tons of memories! I didn’t get into NASCAR until 1990, when a close friend clued me into it and, of course, we were ALL fans of Dale – there weren’t many people who weren’t in those days. That wreck…..oh, man, that was a real downer!!!! I did get to go to a night race in Richmond – I did an open about that (maybe I’ll repost it here) – and we traveled to TX and camped at the track campground for the fall race. Very disappointing! I never, ever liked the speedway races – give me a good ole’ one-mile track any day! Got to drive my Ranger on the Bristol track once, too and have pics….somewhere. Ah, memories!!!!

      1. I liked Harry Gant when I was young, but Dale was the man when I was a little older. That wreck was a bummer. Jr. just wasn’t cut from the same cloth. I remember Cale Yarbrough, Petty, Pearson, Bobby Alison, and all the old timers. Dad used to travel around to races like it was the Grateful Dead! Bristol is about 1.5-2 hrs from me. I liked Darlington and Telladega(sp) the best. We went to Do er and Richmond a lot back then ’cause they were close to us, just outside of Annapolis.

        1. Those were the REAL drivers – by the seat of their paints, not all the fancy high-tech crap. Yeah, Jr. was a real wimp! Nowhere near his Dad’s class and talent. I chose Dale Jarrett as “my” driver because he was driving a Ford for UPS and we had a contract with UPS. I always favored Ford drivers, of course; then I switched to Casey Kane. It also always irked me that Toyota was allowed in a race for American cars! The commercialization and them constantly “tweeking” the rules finally turned me off for good. The only race I watched was the Daytona 500 and I quit doing that some years ago, too. Now they’ve totally screwed the pooch, going all Jussie!

      1. at the end of that little video…under 2 minutes or less…there’s a woman speaking about being in the pentagon when it happened. she said they had bomb sniffing dogs there that morning…and she heard 2 explosions, one large one smaller…and then states some mechanical engineer says there’s no way that the hole they claim was made by a plane was made BY A PLANE.

    QUESTION: What is your view on the new demands for an investigation that there is “overwhelming evidence” that the buildings were brought down by explosives?

    ANSWER: I do not know about the Twin Towers, but I can say that the first World Trade Center bombers drew the World Trade Center on the wall of their cell in MCC with planes flying into it. There is no question that there was a terrorist attack. HOWEVER !!!!!!!! There is evidence, I know PERSONALLY, that the government knew what they were going to do. Do not confuse the fact that there were planted explosives to try to pretend there was not a terrorist attack. They just used the attack as cover.

    I focus on building 7, which was never hit by any plane, yet it fell like a pancake and that was indicative of explosives. Curiously, the SEC was there and this is where they kept the evidence for court cases. Gun possession cases should have been dismissed but the prosecutors then showed photos of guns. The joke was that they used the same photo for everyone. Judges just accepted it and pronounced, “Take him away.” That is not the way the law is supposed to work.

    I had tapes that would have put the whole New York banker crew in prison if we had a real government. There were tapes covering every manipulation they pulled off from rhodium to platinum and silver. It was the platinum manipulation that I had a tape of where they admitted to bribing to a Russian minister to “recall” their platinum to take an inventory. They forced platinum to rally, then the Russian minister announced they found “more” platinum to ensure the price would crash after they flipped their positions. Even Ford Motor Company was looking into suing over that manipulation.

    All the evidence I had documenting each player and what they did was seized and vanished. My requests for documents were never honored. One is supposed to be entitled to discovery. There is no rule of law. You cannot win against the bankers. When I asked a New York lawyer why the bankers are never prosecuted, he smiles and laughed. His response: “You don’t shit where you eat!”

    We will never have a secure financial market until someone is ready to clean up the corruption in New York City.

    There is no question that 9/11 was the event that destroyed the constitution. We lost all of our privacy and rights ever since.”

I remember the video i saw of a stewardess–not one on any of the flights–but a seasoned stewardess nonetheless who wrote a book about the whole thing. she detailed things that were off about the “evidence” and debunked some of the theories. Before she wrote her book, she was vocal in her disbelief and many of the family members who had telephone conversations “on the planes” took their recordings and notes to her. She verified travel documents etc and then formulated her theory based on her personal knowledge of aviation regulations and procedures.
      the video I recommended at Marica’s is what caused amwick to leave because she knew someone who had passed away on the plane. she thought i was saying they weren’t dead–but I just disagreed with the manner in which they were killed.

      1. Ah, I do recall it was her belief that some were claiming the people didn’t die. I don’t think her departure can be attributed to just your post, tho – many of us said much the same thing. Everyone agrees, I think (ok, maybe not Kal – remember???) that they all DID die…..personally, that is where I put the blame for her departure. Yet another example of some people being allowed to say anything w/o anyone challenging them and then blaming others for the fall-out, eh?

        1. yup…I presented my notes on several things the stewardess said–because her theory was very compelling.
          but amwick mistook it as saying those people were alive somewhere.
          but the stewardess thought they were instead flown to a military base within the time radius and they were gassed.
          in the released conversations, someone on one of the planes, says the man is standing on the steps–i can see him–there are no steps in any of those planes…so she believes it was in a hanger.
          i don’t remember much more but i know i have my notes–a LOT of inconsistencies she pointed out…

    According to the Heritage Foundation, the national average premiums paid in the individual health insurance market effectively doubled between 2013 and 2019. Health insurance deductibles also significantly increased for ACA-compliant coverage plans too, rising from an average of $5,100 in 2014 to $6,894 in 2021, while the average deductible for family coverage increased from $10,333 in 2014 to $13,949 in 2021.

    These increased costs were accompanied by reduced access to medical providers, as health insurance companies have offered plans with narrower networks. Health insurers save money by dropping the most popular doctors or hospitals from their network because they know the people who are most sick are likely to use those health care providers and won’t sign up for a plan that doesn’t include them in their network.

    Republicans and other opponents of Obamacare have leveled these criticisms against the law, calling for repeal and replacement, though the GOP has not unified under a plan that would fix these problems.

    Democrats have defended the law against these criticisms, claiming success because millions of people who were previously uninsured have been able to sign up for health insurance. Were Obamacare repealed, it’s likely that at least in the short term, millions would lose their health insurance coverage.

    But Democrats have not been oblivious to the rising costs of health insurance premiums. Included in Biden’s American Rescue Plan were increased tax credits for health insurance, which allowed individuals or families with incomes 400% above the federal poverty line to qualify for subsidies to reduce the cost of purchasing health insurance.

    Helen Rhodes grew up in Tampa, Kansas before moving to Wichita for nursing school. She was always interested in helping others and that workload was increased during World War II. She did basic training in Colorado and then headed to Fort Riley. She served for 18 months in the states.

    While in high school, she met someone very special. “Then one night, I get this call from J Frank, wanted a date and I kept him.” They were married for 65 years until he passed.

    J was a paratrooper in the US Army during WWII and received multiple accolades, including the purple heart.

    The world’s richest man became even wealthier on Monday after he disclosed that he had acquired 9.2 percent of Twitter.

    Elon Musk’s investment was already doing very well before the announcement. He purchased 73,486,938 shares of Twitter’s common stock on March 14, probably paying around $33 a share or $2.4 billion. As of Friday, the shares were up to $39 or so, a return of around 18 percent. Following the disclosure in a regulatory filing, shares jumped another 27 percent to $49.97. Musk’s shares are now up 50 percent from when he acquired them.

    Not that Musk would even notice. According to Bloomberg, Musk is worth around $288 billion. So, an extra billion or so here or there is not going to make a difference.

    Musk may have also broken the rules by delaying his disclosure until today. The Securities and Exchange Commission typically requires an investor who acquires five percent or more of a public company to file the appropriate paperwork within 10 days. Musk tweeted about Twitter’s policies on March 25—asking if Twitter adhered to the principles of free speech—but did not file anything until today. That might earn him a fine, but it’s likely to be so small in comparison to Musk’s wealth that it might as well just be a harsh glance.

    There is some talk that Musk might try to acquire Twitter altogether. After its gains Monday, the company has a market cap of $40 billion—putting it theoretically in reach for Musk. Most of his wealth, however, is shares of Tesla, and selling those to buy Twitter might rattle investors in those companies.

    Or maybe not. Those investors certainly seemed to like Musk’s acquisition of part of Twitter. Tesla shares rose 5.6 percent on Monday, which means Elon made even more on Monday in Tesla gains than he spent to acquire those Twitter shares. In other words, the market reaction to the Twitter investment has more than paid for the investment itself.”

    EXCERPT: “A biological male cyclist who now hopes to compete as a female was blocked from a British Championship race after several female competitors threatened a boycott. Emily Bridges, who originally competed under his birth name of Zach Bridges, was denied entry to the women’s British National Omnium Championship last weekend, the BBC reported.

    It would have been Bridges’ first significant race after reportedly transitioning. But the cyclist was deemed “ineligible” to compete by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and British Cycling. Bridges, 21, told the media that he still doesn’t understand being excluded and added, “I still have little clarity around their finding of my ineligibility under their regulations,” according to Cycling News.

    “For the last six months, I have been in contact with British Cycling and the Union Cycliste Internationale over the eligibility criteria I would need to meet as a transgender woman in order to race in the female category at the British National Omnium Championships this Saturday, 2 April 2022,” Bridges said. “In that time, I have provided both British Cycling and UCI with medical evidence that I meet the eligibility criteria for transgender female cyclists, including that my testosterone level has been far below the limit prescribed by the Regulations for the last 12 months.”

    UCI regulations require transgender cyclists to have testosterone levels below five nanomoles per liter for an entire year before competing in the women’s category. However, the rules also state that the organization must “protect health and safety” and “guarantee fair and meaningful competition that displays and rewards the fundamental values and meaning of the sport.”

    It is, perhaps, those provisions that the organization relied upon to exclude Bridges from the event after several female cyclists openly discussed boycotting the event if Bridges were allowed to compete. Though no one wanted to go public because “they feared voicing their opinions would be interpreted as transphobic,” the BBC wrote.”

    n reversing the trial court decision, the appellate court did not declare the Zuckbuck funding of elections illegal but left that to the court below to decide. However, the appellate court’s decision highlighted that “the Louisiana Constitution provides that the secretary of state is the ‘chief election officer of the state,’” and that “he shall prepare and certify the ballots for all elections, promulgate all election returns, and administer the election laws, except those relating to voter registration and custody of voting machines.” The appellate court further stressed that “the secretary of state is also responsible for paying all election costs and expenses.”

    This analysis supports Landry’s argument in the underlying lawsuit that because Louisiana’s election laws are “comprehensive and exclusive” and provide for the state “funding of elections and election costs” “the use of private money to fund elections in the State of Louisiana” is illegal. But that will be a question for the lower court to determine on remand.

    First, though, there will be the discovery process, including depositions of the relevant players. Landry told The Federalist in a Monday interview that with the case reinstated he “looks forward now to proceeding with the normal process of discovery.”

    Landry added that the situation today is much different than the one the state confronted when the lawsuit was originally filed. Since the election, there have been extremely troubling revelations about the approximately $350 million pumped into the election system by Zuckerberg’s organization, Landry noted.

    While the attorney general spoke only generally about the problems, he noted two fundamental problems underlying the private funding of elections. First, money is flowing into the system “in the darkness of night,” Landry stressed. Second, the Zuckbucks were used to achieve a targeted disenfranchisement, with rural Louisianans treated less favorably than their fellow citizens living in populated areas.

    Details from other states confirm Landry’s concerns. In Wisconsin, a retired election clerk in a large Wisconsin county explained how, behind closed doors, “political activists working for a group funded by Mark Zuckerberg money seized control of the November elections in Green Bay and other cities, sidelining career experts and making last-minute changes that may have violated state law.”

    Similarly, in other states, Zuckbucks created “a ‘shadow’ election system with a built-in structural bias,” according to analyses conducted after the election. Post-election analyses of the data likewise reveal the $350 million in funding disproportionately favored Democrat-heavy areas — so much so that it could have changed the outcome of the election.
