West Virginia State Flower: Rhododendron

Rhododendron is a genus of more than 1,000 deciduous or evergreen flowering shrub species, with more than 25,000 cultivars and hybrids. They come in a wide range of sizes, flower colors and shapes, and many are North American natives. The bloom time is usually spring into summer, but some cultivars bloom in late winter or late summer. The growth rate and preferred conditions of rhododendron species vary widely. However, most prefer moist, well-draining soils, partial shade, and conservative fertilization. All rhododendrons are toxic to people and pets.

Rhododendron Plant Care

While rhododendron species vary in their care preferences, and many grow in a wide range of conditions, the typical main rhododendron requirements are:

Plant in fertile, well-draining, acidic soil.

Position in partial or dappled shaded.

Water to maintain even moisture, but avoid soggy soils.

Fertilize with a rhododendron formula annually only when soils are poor.

Light

In their native habitats, rhododendron grows in dappled woodland shade and under trees. Choose a location in partial shade where the plant isn’t exposed to the hot afternoon sun, which is especially important in a warmer climate.

Soil

Rhododendrons need moist, well-draining soils rich in organic matter. They’re sensitive to soggy, heavy clay, or compacted soil with poor drainage, which can lead to root rot. These shrubs prefer acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0.

Water

Rhododendrons have shallow roots and require even moisture to thrive, especially during the first year after planting. Water the plant slowly and deeply around twice a week during the first growing season, not leaving the roots in standing water.

Even if the plant doesn’t show signs of drought stress, water established rhododendron every two to three weeks during dry spells. Adding a layer of mulch helps with water retention.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature ranges vary depending on the rhododendron variety. Some tolerate heat and humidity, and others are cold-hardy. Most varieties don’t like strong winds and are sensitive to temperature extremes.

Fertilizer

If you plant your rhododendron in rich soil with plenty of organic matter, there’s usually no need to fertilize. In less fertile soil, use a formula for acid-loving rhododendron in late winter or early spring, following the label instructions.

    1. Good morning, Pat! I figured it would be in the single digits this morning, going by the local weather report last night, but it was 32 when I got up. It has dropped to 31, tho, and predicted to get to single digits tonight. Then back up to a high of 32 tomorrow, 39 Friday, 35 Saturday, 24 Sunday, 39 Monday, 47 Tuesday – talk about see-sawing temps!!! Crazy!

    Sean Hannity:

They have similar questions. Do you think, especially with the drought issue Iran is dealing with and Maduro basically being told by the president to get out, are we possibly on the verge of regime change in both countries?

Marco Rubio: Well, look, at the end of the day, with Maduro the problem is this: if you wanted to make a deal with him, I don’t know how you do it.
He’s broken every deal he’s ever made. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. If there were a way to bring stability to the hemisphere, to make Venezuela a country that isn’t a base for Iranian influence and activities against the United States, that would be ideal.

You could have a Venezuela that isn’t trafficking drugs or sending people to our country like Trinidad Agua gang members. The problem is Maduro has made five deals with different parties over the last decade and broken every one of them.

The Biden administration also made a deal with him, no one talks about this. Maduro asked for his nephews, convicted drug traffickers, to be released from U.S. prisons, and for his chief money launderer, his “bag man,” to be released before trial.

In exchange, he promised free and fair elections. He got his nephews back, he got the bag man back, and he never delivered the elections.
    They stole the elections.
    They suckered Joe Biden.

They’re not going to sucker Donald Trump. The president is unique in modern American history. He’s prepared to sit down and talk with anyone.

He just met with the president of Syria, who has an interesting past, to say the least.

He’s willing to meet with Putin, with Xi, with Kim Jong Un, like he did in his first year.

He’ll meet with anybody. But at the end of the day, you need someone who can actually keep a deal.

We’ve made deals with the Chinese, but Maduro has never kept one.
That doesn’t mean the president won’t try. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

    War Crimes and the law:

A reader at the New Neo’s site posted better details about what the laws are on striking boats without flags in international waters, which applies to this case:

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2025/12/venezuela_boat_strike_baloney.html

“But of course this was no warship, and the drug-runners are not signatories to the Geneva Convention. What law does apply?”
    The laws of stateless vessels.

The laws of a country extend 12 miles out from its shores. All vessels within that limit are subject to that country’s jurisdiction. Beyond that limit all vessels must fly the flag under whose jurisdiction they are sailing. Someone committing a crime in international waters is subject to the laws of the country under whose flag he is sailing. In addition, that country is responsible for the actions of a vessel flying its flag.

These boats are not flying Venezuela’s flag, and thus Venezuela is not legally responsible for them. They’re not flying any flag — so no country is responsible for their actions, but they don’t receive the protections of any country either. They are stateless vessels and, under the law, essentially pirates.

Vessels in international waters are required to monitor specific radio frequencies and to respond to the hailing of any coast guard or navy. A stateless vessel which fails to do so can be considered a pirate vessel and dealt with accordingly. Much like a soldier out of uniform picking up a gun on a battlefield and fighting, pirates are not subject to the Geneva Conventions. The laws of piracy, not warfare, apply.

This is useful, too, from a maritime expert:
It’s a pirate ship. The U.S. Marine Corps has a storied history of getting rid of pirate ships. They’re a threat no matter how you look at them. And this one contained 11 Tren de Aragua gang members, the world’s worst of the worst.
Darn right they needed to get rid of it. The Trump team was right in calling it self-defense.

With 99% of the vote counted, Van Epps has 53.9% of the vote, and Behn has 45%.

The special election to replace retired Republican Rep. Mark Green in Tennessee’s 7th congressional district was another test along the way to next year’s midterm elections in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs.

Following last month’s off-year elections, in which Democrats did well in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and Georgia, this was the next big race. It is a district that Donald Trump won in 2024 by over 20 points.

Behn, a progressive Tennessee state representative, has been referred to as the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of Nashville. Van Epps was a combat veteran and former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services.”

  5. “The Case for Pardoning Former President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernandez — I took a particular interest in Hernandez’s case because of how his situation mirrored mine.”

    Roger Stone, Dec 03, 2025

EXCERPT: “Last week, President Donald Trump made an announcement that rocked the foundation of Honduran politics when he said he was issuing a pardon for the country’s former President Juan Orlando Hernandez (JOH). True to his word, Hernandez was released from custody on Tuesday and is now a free man after serving little over one year in prison.

Contrary to some in the mainstream media as well as various internet trolls, I was compensated nothing for my advocacy of a pardon for the former Honduran president and simply forwarded a compelling letter from Hernandez to President Trump because a review of the case led me to the clear conclusion that the charges against Hernandez were both politically motivated and false. Hernandez was charged and prosecuted utilizing the same tactics of lawfare in which President Trump himself was charged by Special Counsel Jack Smith. In short, Juan Orlando Hernandez was framed. President Trump’s clemency for the former Honduran president is an act of both justice and mercy.

In fact, President Hernandez’s letter was sent to me by investigative journalist Shane Trejo, as I disclosed on my syndicated radio show at 77WABC Radio, where I hosted former Honduran First Lady Ana Garcia de Hernandez and their two daughters, Ana Daniela and Isabela Hernandez, after the pardon was announced.

The pardon came days before the national election where the ruling LIBRE Party hoped to remain in control. Immediately after Hernandez was termed out of office in 2022, the LIBRE Party President Xiomara Castro, wife of former President Mel Zelaya, worked with the Biden/Harris DOJ to extradite Hernandez over allegations of drug trafficking. Examining the facts of the case show that it was nothing more than a politically motivated hit by the Biden/Harris administration in their witch hunt against President Trump and his allies, both foreign and domestic.

‘WE’RE STOPPING DRUGS ON A LEVEL THAT’S NEVER HAPPENED’

Throughout Hernandez’s tenure as Honduran President, he worked with the United States on drug interdictions and received President Trump’s praise for his work in doing so. Hernandez even signed the extradition treaty that allowed for criminals to be sent to the U.S. and prosecuted, a landmark agreement in cracking down against the scourge of illegal drugs.

“President Hernandez is working with the United States very closely. You know what’s going on on our southern border. And we’re winning after years and years of losing. We’re stopping drugs at a level that has never happened,” President Trump said in Dec. 2019…..”

“…..Like with the U.S. and with the resurrection of Donald Trump and his re-ascension to the Presidency, things did not go according to plan in Honduras. The Xiomara Castro regime failed miserably, and her hand-picked successor Rixi Moncada was decimated in the recent presidential elections. The Trump-backed National Party candidate, Tito Asfura, is now expected to win a nail-biter election against his closest competitor, Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party, to be the next President of Honduras.

This is a nation that has pulled itself back from the brink of communism and has shown that they yearn for freedom and increased cooperation with the United States. The pardon for Hernandez is part of this Honduran national renaissance that is underway, as President Trump has demonstrated emphatically that the unprecedented meddling into Honduran political affairs was unjust. Now, the country can heal, and Hernandez can rejoin his family after their years-long nightmare. The actual Narco regime, the Zelaya family, is being run out of power, and Honduras has a chance to become great again.”

MASON COUNTY, W. Va. – “A truck driver was heroically rescued from certain death after a commercial cargo truck veered off a snow-covered highway in West Virginia, leaving the semi-truck cab dangling off a bridge nearly 100-feet above the ground.

At roughly 6:25 a.m., first responders from Hurricane Fire Department were dispatched to a snow-covered U.S. Route 35 in Mason County for a motor vehicle collision – and it wasn’t an average crash. At the scene, the cab of a large tractor trailer was dangling off a bridge, with the driver inside starting a deadly drop to the ground.

A coalition of local first responders assembled on U.S. Route 35, where bystanders gathered and captured video and photographs of the truck that hung off the interstate bridge by the weight of its cargo.

On scene, a team of local and county first responders closed the highway and began a rescue operation using a number of fire engines and emergency management vehicles to prepare to rescue the driver from the doomed truck.

According to local first responders, technicians from several responding departments implemented three rope systems using two heavy “wrecker” trucks, operating one as an anchor to the bridge and the other to secure the dangling truck to prevent it from plummeting to the ground below.

First responders strategically positioned emergency vehicles to allow for a challenging rope rescue, and heroically lowered down a first responder to rescue the at-risk truck driver.

Hurricane Fire Department volunteer firefighter Westley Quinn was propelled off of the bridge and into the truck cab, where he secured the driver using a harness. After roughly five hours dangling from the highway bridge, the driver was hoisted back up to safety unharmed.

According to Mason County Commission President Rick Handley, responding local fire departments that heroically assisted in saving the life of the truck driver included Hurricane, Point Pleasant, Winfield, Buffalo, St. Albans, Nitro and Teays Valley.”

I still have to use a pillow to prop up my head. But the heat and massage are REALLY nice!!! It is what it is: the cheapest one I found on Amazon. 10. EXCERPT: “FBI Director Kash Patel on Wednesday told Just the News his team has implemented a dozen major reforms that have made the bureau “faster, stronger, more accountable” than the one he inherited earlier this year and that agents are getting new tools that will allow them to better counter terror threats from drones and use artificial intelligence to more quickly detect crimes.

“The results are already clear: historic crime reductions, major disruptions to criminal networks and record arrests across violent crime, espionage, terrorism, and child exploitation. This is the FBI doing exactly what it’s supposed to do,” Patel said in a statement.

Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino went on the offensive this week to counter anonymous complaints published by news media – including New York Post columnist Miranda Devine – from former employees alleging the bureau is suffering from systemic problems and is “rudderless.” Bongino directly criticized Devine’s report in a post on X, calling her “deep-state Devine.”

“You can always count on Miranda for a timed hit piece when the director and I make big changes,” he wrote. “Miranda prefers the old-guard. I don’t. Full steam ahead.”

Devine, a favorite columnist of President Donald Trump whose work on Hunter Biden’s laptop led to a best-selling book, fired right back.

“Anonymous sources do not ‘always lie,'” she wrote on X. “They are often the only way to expose corruption and abuse and bring accountability to the powerful. Multiple brave whistleblowers came forward to Sen. Grassley under Biden to expose wrongdoing at the FBI, for instance.”

    Dr. Robert W. Malone, Dec 03, 2025

EXCERPT: “AI voice cloning technology is incredibly accessible and works well with a small amount of voice data. Many programs can even clone a voice in as little as 10 to 30 seconds or less! This means that a simple Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook video on your own profile page can be voice cloned by anyone.

This opens the door to a whole new generation of scams. A recent scam involved an AI-generated voice cloned from a Florida woman named Sharon Brightwell’s daughter. The call featured the victim’s “daughter,” sobbing and claiming she’d caused a car crash that injured a pregnant woman, and that the police were confiscating her phone. A fake “attorney” then demanded $15,000 in bail, instructed her to withdraw cash, put it in a box, and hand it to a driver. A follow-up call tried to push for an additional $30,000…..”

  18. “America Welcomes a New G20”

    State Dept, Dec 03, 2025

Author: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio

EXCERPT: “Next year, the United States will host the world’s 20 largest economies for the first time since 2009. Coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary, the 2026 G20 will be a chance to recognize the values of innovation, entrepreneurship, and perseverance that made America great, and which provide a roadmap to prosperity for the entire world. We’ll showcase these values and more when we host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in December 2026 in one of America’s greatest cities, Miami, Florida.

Under President Trump’s leadership, the G20 will use four working groups to achieve progress on three key themes: removing regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and pioneering new technologies and innovation. The first Sherpa and Finance Track meetings will be held in Washington, DC, on December 15-16, followed by a series of meetings throughout 2026. As the global economy confronts the changes driven by technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, and shakes off ideological preoccupations around green energy, the President is prepared to lead the way.

We will be inviting friends, neighbors, and partners to the American G20. We will welcome the world’s largest economies, as well as burgeoning partners and allies, to America’s table. In particular, Poland, a nation that was once trapped behind the Iron Curtain but now ranks among the world’s 20 largest economies, will be joining us to assume its rightful place in the G20. Poland’s success is proof that a focus on the future is a better path than one on grievances. It shows how partnership with the United States and American companies can promote mutual prosperity and growth.

The contrast with South Africa, host of this year’s G20, is stark.

South Africa entered the post-Cold War era with strong institutions, excellent infrastructure, and global goodwill. It possessed many of the world’s most valuable resources, some of the best agricultural land on the planet, and was located around one of the world’s key trading routes. And in Nelson Mandela, South Africa had a leader who understood that reconciliation and private sector driven economic growth were the only path to a nation where every citizen could prosper…..”
