Nuzzling, playing, chirping, feeding together; the Olympic marmot is quite possibly one of the most social and gregarious mammals on the peninsula. Marmots are rodents; they belong to the squirrel family and evolved during the Pleistocene Epoch. Some folks call them “rock chucks” or “whistle pigs”. There are 15 recognized species of marmot worldwide, all in the northern hemisphere, with six species in North America. The Olympic marmot however, is only found in the Olympic mountains and nowhere else (it’s endemic).

Identification:

Marmots are a housecat-sized rodent with a long, bushy tail. Adults can weigh 15 pounds or more before they enter hibernation in September or early October. Olympic marmots have widely varying coat colors, unlike their other American counterparts. The young are usually dark gray but the adults are often brownish in color, but may be yellow or tan colored with a variety of patch colors when they emerge from hibernation in the spring, and almost black in the fall.

Family groups of one adult male, one or more adult females, and several cohorts of young share a home range of 1/2-acre to five acres. In any given year, about 30 percent of adult females produce litters of 1-6 pups. Pups initially stay close to their burrows when they emerge in late July, but by mid-August, they can be seen wrestling and chasing each other in enthusiastic play. Marmots have a sharp, piercing whistle that warns others of intruders or potential predators, and notifies hikers that they are in marmot territory.

Habitat:

Marmots occupy mountain meadows above 4,000 feet. Although they are found throughout the Olympic Mountains, they are rare in the wetter southwest areas of the park. About 90 percent of Olympic marmot habitat is protected within Olympic National Park.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Olympic marmot numbers declined, at least partly due to predation by non-native coyotes. Marmots and their habitat are also expected to be sensitive to climate change. In recent years, marmots have also disappeared from some of the driest meadows in the northeast Olympic Mountains. In response to these concerns, in 2010 the park initiated a volunteer monitoring program to record the presence or absence of marmots in many meadows throughout the park.

Diet:

Olympic marmots prefer fresh, tender, flowering plants such as lupine and glacier lilies. In May and June, they will eat roots and may even gnaw on trees. They can double their body weight in the summer and use stored fat during a seven to eight month hibernation.

Marmots are supremely adapted to living on cold, windswept grasslands and exposed mountain slopes where snow covers the ground for all but a few short months. They forage on grasses, sedges, and herbacsous plants. They dig burrows in which they shelter from predators and weather, bear and nurse their young, and hibernate for up to 8 months a year. The body temperature of a hibernating marmot drops to <40F and the heart rate may drop to 3 beats per minute. Marmots do warm themselves up briefly every 10 days or so but do not eat or drink during hibernation.

Marmots have an unusually “slow” life history for rodents. Olympic marmots can live into their teens and do not reach reproductive maturity until age 3 or older. The average age of first reproduction for females is 4.5 years. Among reproductive-age Olympic marmots, about 35% of females wean young in an average year. Litters of 1-6 pups first come above ground in late July or early August, and about half of these young die before the following spring. The long maturation period, low rate of reproduction, and relatively high rate of juvenile mortality combine to make adult females particularly valuable to a marmot population – it can take years to replace one that is killed. The death of several breeding-age females can have serious long-term effects on the population.

    1. Good morning, Pat! I was truly grateful NOT to see any snow on the ground this morning but I can’t see any stars either…..so it’s still possible. Temp just dropped a degree to 25…..brrrrrr! I’ve got to figure out how to take the battery out of my mower so I can bring it inside for the winter. Wheezer was able to eat part of the tuna before it froze.

    DHS moves to cut off South Texas Catholic Charities over migrant grant ‘misconduct,’ documents say

    Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley – the South Texas nonprofit long known for its migrant shelter run by Sister Norma Pimentel – has been suspended from receiving federal funds and now faces a rare six-year debarment after a Department of Homeland Security investigation found major grant violations, according to internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents shared exclusively with Fox News Digital.

    The action, taken by FEMA on behalf of DHS on Nov. 19-20, follows months of warnings and data reviews that auditors say uncovered sweeping inaccuracies, large gaps in migrant records and significant billing outside federally allowed timeframes.

    The suspension applies only to this South Texas affiliate, not to Catholic Charities USA or any other Catholic Charities chapters nationwide.

    In a formal Notice of Suspension and Proposed Debarment, DHS officials accused the organization of submitting migrant data so inconsistent the agency could not verify whether many of the people it reported serving had ever appeared in DHS databases.

    If finalized, the designation would cut the organization off from most federal funding streams and flag it in the government-wide System for Award Management, warning agencies and pass-through partners not to issue new grants.

    Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (CCRGV) now has 30 days to respond, submit documentation or request a meeting to argue it remains “presently responsible.” If it does not, the six-year ban would likely go into effect…

    The suspension now places the Rio Grande Valley operation under simultaneous federal and state scrutiny. It is not yet clear whether other local shelters or municipal partners can absorb the South Texas caseload if the nonprofit ultimately loses federal funds. CCRGV currently serves far fewer migrants than in prior years, but remains one of the region’s key intake points.

    DHS has not said when a final decision on debarment will be made. The organization continues to operate during the suspension period but cannot receive new federal awards until the matter is resolved.

Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of West Virginia, died with her family by her side, one day after being shot Wednesday by an Afghan national who once worked with the CIA.

    The other wounded Guardsman, Andrew Wolfe, also remains in critical condition. They were shot near the White House at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The suspected shooter has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national.”

    Anwar Adow and Asad Ahmed Adow, both in their 30s and residents of the Minneapolis area, admitted to defrauding the Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program by inventing clients and fabricating housing deals. According to court documents, the brothers operated Leo Human Services and Liberty Plus LLC, claiming to assist individuals with relocation costs.

    In reality, they pocketed reimbursements for nonexistent services, using the cash for personal gain. “The defendants exploited a program designed to help vulnerable people secure housing by submitting fraudulent claims for services that were never provided,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said in a statement.

    Jacksonville, FL – “Jacksonville police say 23-year-old server Leah Sanderson was arrested Sunday night after a confrontation with a customer turned into what witnesses described as “a slow-motion crime of passion involving marinara.”

The spokesman also said Tkachuk has not been informed about to what the searches are related, the wire service also reports.”

    The barbaric terrorist attack in Washington D.C. by an Afghan terrorist has spurred righteous outrage over the Biden admin’s policy of importing people hostile to our nation.

    It is true that the terrorist who conducted the attack in D.C. was “vetted” by the intelligence community, however he was only vetted to serve as a soldier to fight against the Taliban, AQ, & ISIS IN Afghanistan, he was NOT vetted for his suitability to come to America and live among us as a neighbor, integrate into our communities, or eventually become an American citizen.

    During Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, his administration negligently used the vetting standard described above as the standard for being brought directly into the U.S., foregoing previous vetting standards applied to Special Immigrant Visas and any common sense vetting or concern for Americans. As a result, over 85k Afghans—including individuals with backgrounds similar to this shooter— were rapidly admitted into our country without the rigorous vetting that has protected us in the past. And that’s just Afghans; broader immigration from Muslim majority nations & regions surged, with over 2 million individuals entering during Biden’s term, often with minimal scrutiny amid record border crossings. This is a deadly combination.

    Incidents like this aren’t isolated—they’re the predictable outcome of prioritizing speed and volume over security. As we move forward, we must commit to a strengthened and comprehensive vetting and removal process to safeguard our homeland and ensure only those who truly align with American values are admitted, to prevent future tragedies.

    President Trump’s directive to re-vet and expel those illegally admitted under Biden, who flooded into our country to overwhelm our communities and drain our resources, represents the bold, decisive leadership our nation desperately needed. Thank you, @POTUS

  44. we got about 5 inches of snow. hubby normally puts the chains on the tractor the day after Thanksgiving so he was already going to do that today. But now he has to put the plow and do the driveway. My idiot relative was already in the little town that has the PO. he brings his trailer and stays at the bottom of the driveway but drives his truck up here to the house every morning to hunt.

    hubby called him 3 times since it started snowing heavily to warn him that nothing is plowed (our road is always last) and the driveway is NOT plowed yet.

    the one other time it snowed so bad this early, his truck slid off the driveway and AAA does not come to your driveway. We were fortunate then that the neighbor with the bulldozer was up ad he pulled him out and onto the road.

    I dread this time of year.
