Virginia’s history dates back to 1492 when Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to America. The name Virginia was given to the original Colony of Virginia and was derived from the Latin word “virga” meaning “rod”, or “staff”. Virginia’s historical background is rich in architecture, music, dance and cuisine. Virginia is also known for its beautiful wildflowers. In spring and summer, the fields and woodland hillsides are filled with beautiful wild azalea, dogwood, and bluebells. Out of all the flowers of Virginia, dogwood is the most important.
Virginia State Flower – Dogwood Flower
The dogwood flower tree has been the symbol of Virginia since 1903. The flowering dogwood is a native shrub that grows in all the states, but it is most commonly found in the South. The state flower of Virginia is the dogwood and can be seen growing along highways and in yards across the state.
Dogwoods are native to North America, with an estimated 15 species growing throughout the U.S and Canada. The flowering dogwood of Virginia is a small deciduous tree that typically grows 15 to 20 feet tall. The dogwood blooms in early to mid-spring, and again in late spring or early summer when the leaves are fully expanded.
The dogwood is also known as Cornus Florida or C. alba. Its name comes from its resemblance to a small dachshund because of the long white bracts surrounding each petal which resemble legs. The colorful bracts may be white, red, pink, or yellow. The tiny flowers are a prominent part of the display and have a “clustered cross” shape that is especially notable in the red variety. The four petals commemorate the cross of the crucifixion, and the inner ring of large white and smaller yellow petals represents a crown of thorns. Each flower has up to five petals, which are each 1 to 2 inches long. Its leaves are a glossy green and grow to 5 inches long.
Dogwood Flower Meaning and Symbolism
The flowering dogwood symbolizes spring in the state of Virginia when the trees begin to blossom. As the blooms fall away and leaves emerge, white berries turn red and then fall to the ground. They are also a symbol of patriotism, courage, and victory.
Dogwood flowers come in a wide range of colors, but the three most common are white, pink, and red. These beautiful trees can be planted anywhere, even in a dark corner where they can make an impact with their vibrant colors.
According to tradition, the meaning of various colors of dogwood differs depending on what they represent.
1.Red dogwoods represent love.

2.Pink dogwood flowers mean friendship.

3.White dogwood blossoms symbolize heaven.

4.Yellow dogwood flowers mean purity.

times like these I wish my mom had taught me to can…and offered me her canning equipment.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh, heavens! It’s not that difficult these days! No particular canning “equipment” is needed any more. My Mom cans thru-out the year (especially tomatoes) and I don’t think she even has a pressure canner….found this on Reddit:
“There are two kinds of canning: pressure canning and boiling water bath canning.
Pressure canning (which I have not personally done yet, but I’ve read up on it) is for just about any kind of food: meat, beans, soups, whatever. It involves a pressure canner (not cooker, pressure canners can be used as cookers but not the other way around), a specified amount of pressure, and a set time.
Boiling water bath canning is easy: put hot food into hot jars, lower into boiling water (or hot water that you quickly bring back to a boil), allow to boil for the amount of time specified in the recipe, remove from water, let rest for 24 hours, make sure the lids are firmly in place and sealed, and you’re done! Only high acid foods can be canned via the boiling water bath method. Especially with this method, you do not want to stray from approved recipes until you are very, very confident with your canning and acidity-checking abilities.
The reason these two forms of canning exist: botulism. It’s a nasty bug, capable of paralyzing your whole body and even killing you. It is not to be trifled with. Botulism spores are found in dirt and pretty much touch everything that grows, so it’s not an isolated problem. Botulism thrives in a low-acid, low-oxygen environment. Since the canning process creates a bit of a vacuum in the jar, it creates that low-oxygen environment that botulism likes so much.
There are two ways to prevent botulism poisoning by canning: pressure canning raises the temperature enough to kill the botulism spores. The spores aren’t killed at the boiling point, so the pressure canner is needed to create the pressure to bring the temperature up high enough for long enough.
Boiling water bath canning takes a different stance: since it can’t kill spores, you instead create an acidic environment so that the spores just can’t procreate. This is why only high acid foods are canned this way: jellies and jams, pickles, and tomatoes, and why so many of the recipes for this kind of canning require bottled lemon juice, which is a constant and reliable acid.
Boiling water bath canning is easy and awesome! Still, you need to follow approved recipes from the USDA/National Center for Home Food Preservation or a very, very reliable source like Ball’s Blue Book or Complete Book of Home Preserving. The acid level is very important to make sure botulism can’t grow, and while recipes from Pinterest or blogs (at least ones that don’t disclose the recipe’s source) can look really fun, you’re really better off playing it safe!”

yeah–that whole botulism thing scares me. she had a presser canner and canning recipe books, but gave it all to my aunt. I am the kind of person who likes to watch someone do something first, so i can ask my questions and get answers before i try it on my own.

All I know is that my Mom is constantly canning something and she uses the hot water method. No-one has ever gotten botulism to my knowledge.

I’m guessing the missing word is bill/law…
FTA
Far-left Democrat Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced on Thursday which prevents sitting presidents from seeking taxpayer-funded payouts.
Schiff called his bill the No Torts for Trump Act. Pencil-neck’s bill will amend the Federal Torts Claim Act.
According to AXIOS several Democratic Senators signed on to the bill, including: Chris Van Hollen (Md.), Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Ed Markey (Mass.), Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), Dick Durbin (Ill.), Jack Reed (R.I.) and Jacky Rosen (Nev.).
News broke in late October that President Trump was seeking $230 million payout for compensation for the federal investigations into him, according to people familiar with the matter.
No new indictments have been filed against President Trump since 2023.
Democrats tried to destroy President Trump who even survived two assassination attempts.
Now President Trump wants to be reimbursed for the millions of dollars spent and stress he endured during their attempts to use the US Courts to destroy him, his family, and his supporters.

I think he’s referring to the Korean battery factory. I get what he’s saying though. To entice and keep foreign investors building things in the US, he might have had to make a deal that we allow so many foreigners to be employed there initially—because we do not posses the skills/technology yet to do it ourselves. that might be a thing that gets phased out, but he can’t openly tell that to the Koreans or they might not build the plant here. And not all the jobs there are H1b. But i don’t know. I can’t think of anything that’s making him say it. Seriously IF we possess the skills and technology, why AREN’T we already doing it???

Just The News: “War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday afternoon announced the creation of a new anti-drug trafficking mission, dubbed “Operation Southern Spear,” which will be focused on removing “narco-terrorists” from the Western Hemisphere.
The operation comes the same day the Trump administration confirmed its 20th military strike on alleged drug boats it believes were attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the United States. At least 80 people have died in the strikes so far.
Hegseth said the new mission is being led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and the U.S. Southern Command to defend the United States, remove narco-terrorists from the “hemisphere,” and protect Americans from the flow of illicit drugs. “The Western Hemisphere is America’s neighborhood – and we will protect it,” he added in a post on X.
The new operation also comes after American allies criticized U.S. missile strikes on alleged drug boats, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot telling reporters Tuesday that he believes the attacks against them are in violation of international law.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the operations on Wednesday, stating Europe does not get to dictate how America defends its national security.”

Just The News: “Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday announced that thousands of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents will receive $10,000 bonuses for working during the government shutdown.
TSA workers were among the over one million federal employees who continued to work during the 42-day shutdown without pay. Government workers receive back pay after shutdowns end, but are not paid during them because of the lapse in federal funding.
Noem said in a news conference that the TSA workers showed “exemplary service” by stepping up during the shutdown by covering additional shifts and will be receiving the bonus on top of their promised paychecks.
“We are not only going to continue their paychecks like they should’ve received all along, but also they’re going to receive a bonus check for stepping up, taking on extra shifts, for showing up each and every day, for serving the American people,” she vowed. “[We] will be looking at every single TSA official that helped serve during this government shutdown and do what we can to recognize that and help them financially with a bonus to get them and their family back on their feet.”
The comments come after President Donald Trump promised on Monday to give all air traffic controllers who did not call in sick during the shutdown an extra $10,000 bonus check.”

Just The News: “Interior Secretary Doug Burgum on Thursday announced his department is rescinding a ban on drilling at the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, which was made last year during the Biden administration. The previous presidential administration last April banned oil and gas drilling on 13 million acres of the reserve and limited future oil and gas leasing on the public lands.
The Alaskan reserve was established in 1923 and has operated as a petroleum reserve to support the nation’s energy security, the Department of the Interior said.
“By rescinding the 2024 rule, we are following the direction set by President Trump to unlock Alaska’s energy potential, create jobs for North Slope communities and strengthen American energy security,” Burgum said. “This action restores common-sense management and ensures responsible development benefits both Alaska and the nation.”
The department also noted that reversing the rule “reduces regulatory burdens and positions the reserve to deliver full economic benefits for the nation and communities on the North Slope.”
The order, which will be posted on the Federal Register on Nov. 17, is the latest action the Trump administration has taken to curb the energy impacts of the Biden administration.
President Donald Trump most recently reopened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s (ANWR) 1.56 million acres for oil and gas development last month, which was banned under the Biden administration.”

“The body of a coal miner has been found in a flooded West Virginia mine, the governor says. Crews found the body inside Alpha Metallurgical Resources Inc.’s Rolling Thunder Mine near Belva, about 50 miles east of the state capital of Charleston.”
The Rolling Thunder coal mine near Swiss, in Nicholas County, West Virginia, on Wednesday. Sean McCallister / AP
EXCERPT: “CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The body of a coal miner was found early Thursday in a mine that flooded in southern West Virginia, Gov. Patrick Morrisey said.
Machines had been pumping water out of Alpha Metallurgical Resources Inc.’s Rolling Thunder Mine near Belva, about 50 miles east of the state capital of Charleston. The water receded enough for rescue crews to safely enter Thursday morning, and they found foreman Steve Lipscomb dead less than two hours later, Morrisey said in a statement on social media.
Morrisey praised the crews who worked around the clock for days in hopes of a rescue. “Our state knows this kind of pain all too well,” Morrisey said. “Mining is more than an industry here — it’s a brotherhood, a way of life, and a source of pride. When tragedy strikes, we grieve together, we stand together, and we support one another as one West Virginia family.”
A mining crew hit an unknown pocket of water on Saturday about three-quarters of a mile into the mine, which flooded after an old mine wall “was compromised,” Morrisey said. More than a dozen other miners were accounted for after the accident was reported. Lipscomb was last seen trying to make sure his crew got out of the mine safely, Alpha said in a statement.
“Our hearts are broken,” Alpha CEO Andy Eidson said.
Lipscomb, 42, of Elkview, joined Alpha in 2006 and “was a dedicated employee, respected leader and friend to many,” Eidson said. “His actions to ensure the safety of his crew members were heroic. On behalf of the entire organization, we extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to his wife, two children and all who knew and cared for him.”
The death is the third at an Alpha facility in West Virginia this year. The others occurred in nearby Raleigh County: An elevator being tested struck a miner on a first-floor platform in August at Alpha subsidiary Marfork Coal’s processing facility; and a coal seam fell on a contractor in February at Alpha’s Black Eagle underground operation, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Holes were drilled in the mine in an attempt to speed up the search process and dive teams explored potential areas in the water where air pockets might exist. The National Cave Rescue Commission provided surplus Army phones attached to wires that can travel great distances for better underground communication…..”

I finally decided to try the portable oxygen concentrator. It is awesome!!! The only negative is that there is no unlimited time setting. The longest time available is 3 hours so if I wanted to use it all night, I’d have to get up to restart it….which is not a big deal for me since I’m usually up a couple of times to pee anyway. But it is called “portable” for a reason! The air hose that comes with it is short, of course, but I bought a 14′ air hose so I can make it all the way across to the west wall of the kitchen.
I’m going to take it with me when I go to Mom’s for Thanksgiving to show her. When I decided to order it, I also had her in mind. She should be able to get the oxygen from Medicare but they will probably only provide at-home oxygen and she loves to get out & about. As long as I don’t need it, I’ll loan it to her.

“The Swamp Got Bigger, Better Paid & More Secretive Since 2020”
OpenTheBooks, Nov 14, 2025
EXCERPT: “If you were told a business increased their staff headcount by 5% over four years but its payroll rose 24% over that time, all the while withholding the names of 39% of their staff, would you invest in that company?
Unlikely. But that’s just what the United State government does, funded by taxpayer dollars and operating as if accountable to no one.
Open the Books analyzed the FY 2024 payroll records of executive agencies and found that 2.9 million federal employees were paid $270 billion, compared to 2.8 million employees paid $217 billion in FY 2020. While the civilian employee ranks grew 5%, pay grew nearly 5 times as much, 24%.
The Office of Personnel Management provided the pay for over 1.5 million executive agency bureaucrats; Department of Defense provided pay for its 761,624 civilian employees; and United States Postal Service gave its 638,007 employees’ payroll, via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Not included are pay for judicial branch employees; the 535 members of Congress and their staff; the 1.3 million active-duty military members; the Office of the Vice President (which claims itself entirely exempt from FOIA); nor the staff of several intelligence agencies.
While payroll records don’t include benefits, adding an estimated 30% to the $270 billion payroll brings total costs to $351 billion.
That means the disclosed federal workforce costs the American taxpayer $673,000 per minute, $40.4 million per hour, and just under $1 billion per day.
Meanwhile, more than a million civilian names were redacted from payroll productions produced by Office of Personnel Management and Department of Defense.
The Trump administration has a historic opportunity to bring much-needed transparency to the administrative state. While federal employees don’t add as much to the debt as safety net programs, defense, and overall agency spending, they are an indicator of government growth…..”

EXCERPT: “Fake news was working overtime on Monday by declaring, without authority, that the “full, complete” presidential pardons related to the 2020 presidential election cannot protect against bogus state charges arising from that election. Corporate media wrongly insisted that the pardon clause in the U.S. Constitution applies only to charges brought by federal prosecutors.
Not so. The pardon clause states that the president “shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” Every attempt in court to narrow the scope of the pardon clause has failed.
Our system of dual sovereigns, federal and state, is subject to the supremacy clause, which means that state sovereignty cannot limit the scope of the pardon clause. It was modeled on the vast, nearly unlimited pardon power of the King of England.
The newly pardoned 77 alternate electors, federal officials, attorneys, and activists who objected to voter fraud in 2020 were acting in defense of the integrity of a presidential election, and thus in defense of the United States. Their conduct is fully pardonable by the president, which Trump has appropriately done.
Yet naysayers argue that the term “United States” in the pardon clause means only crimes prosecuted by the federal government. If that were true, then the Supreme Court would not have upheld in Ex parte Wells (1856) the last-minute commutation of a death penalty by President Millard Fillmore of a man convicted of murder in a District of Columbia court, as there were no federal common law crimes.
Federal law never denied women the right to vote, but New York prosecuted Susan B. Anthony for voting illegally in the 1872 presidential election, and prosecuted local officials for allowing her to vote. After his reelection as our 18th President, U.S. Grant pardoned the state officials for their violation of state law, and in 2020, President Trump pardoned Susan B. Anthony for casting an illegal vote…..”

United States Attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli
Just found some of the $24 billion @CAgovernor
Gavin Newsom extorted and lost fighting homelessness.
@USAttyEssayli
“Gavin Newsom has made little progress on homelessness and provided ‘little meaningful oversight’ of those receiving public funds. We’re looking at everyone. If you steal money or allow it to be stolen, we will find you, and we will prosecute you.”
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced charges against two Los Angeles-based property developers in separate cases involving misuse of government funds meant to address the homelessness crisis.
Federal officials accuse that Cody Holmes, a Beverly Hills housing developer, submitted fake financial information to secure funds for a Thousand Oaks homeless housing project. The project was never completed, and Holmes used the grant money to pay credit card bills.
In a separate case, Steven Taylor, a Brentwood property flipper, is accused of defrauding a lender by claiming he would renovate a Cheviot Hills senior housing complex for himself, when he had already agreed to sell it to a homeless housing developer. Taylor purchased the property for $11.2 million, while the developer bought it for $27.3 million using public funds.
In other words: Gavin Newsom extorted $24 billion from the taxpayer, including myself, so that Democrats could funnel that money into the racket-empire they’ve created — all in the name of homelessness.

Just The News: “Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday announced she has selected a top federal prosecutor in New York to handle the Justice Department’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged ties to former President Bill Clinton and other Democrats.
President Donald Trump directed Bondi to investigate the alleged ties earlier Friday, along with alleged ties to major banks like JP Morgan and Chase. The probe comes after House Oversight Democrats released emails between Epstein and others regarding the president.
Bondi said she has selected acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton to lead the investigation.
“Clayton is one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country, and I’ve asked him to take the lead,” Bondi said on X. “As with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people.”
Clayton will also investigate Clinton’s former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. The acting attorney previously served as the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first administration. “

Just The News: “Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee on Friday ordered prosecutors to drop three charges from the overarching Georgia 2020 election interference case, which targets President Donald Trump and some of his biggest allies.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants in 2023 over their efforts to challenge the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Willis and her office were dropped from the case last month over a “significant appearance of impropriety” stemming from her romantic relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who worked on the case, but another prosecutor was selected Friday to replace her.
McAfee directed Georgia’s Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council Executive Director Peter Skandalakis, who is taking over the case, to drop charges 14, 15 and 27 from the case, which consist of conspiracy and criminal attempt to file false documents and filing false documents, CBS News reported.
Trump himself has been charged with counts 15 and 27, but there are still a total of 32 charges remaining against the defendants, including racketeering.
McAfee said the challenges to the other charges, which were part of a challenge to the indictment through the U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, were denied.”
